Just two shows into NCIS’ new season and storylines are heating up! During the series’ premiere, fans saw Timothy McGee (Sean Murray) interested in the Deputy Direction role. Even though he had worked as an interim director and experience as an NCIS agent, the role was given to someone else: Gabriel Laroche (Seamus Dever), Department of Justice Inspector General.
Meanwhile, fans saw Lena Paulson (Marem Hassler) return in Episode 2, an agent for Germany’s federal intelligence service, Bundesnachrichtendienst (Bnd).
Lena debuted in Season 20 when fans discovered that she and Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll) were hooking up at international out-of-town conferences. At the end of Episode 2, their romance is made official when Lena gives Leon the key to her apartment.
Could the show be teasing an exit for him?

NCIS: Origins is the first spinoff to potentially bring back Kate Todd, a deceased NCIS character, due to its setting in the past. Kate Todd experienced a shocking death in NCIS season 2, marking the end of her character's presence in the NCIS universe. Kate Todd's appearance in NCIS: Origins could offer a glimpse into her life before her tragic death, potentially interacting with a younger Gibbs.
A new spinoff from NCIS can finally bring back a character who hasn't been able to appear in the NCIS universe in 19 years. Some characters are brought back to the franchise long after they depart, like when Anthony Dinozzo actor Michael Weatherly surprisingly returned in NCIS season 21. Characters can also return to the NCIS universe in other spinoff shows, like when LL Cool J's Sam Hanna joined the cast of NCIS: Hawai'i after his home series, NCIS: Los Angeles, was canceled in 2023.

Warning! Spoilers ahead for NCIS' 1000th episode.
NCIS 1000th episode celebrates the universe's history with an Easter egg-filled case. Director Vance survives the shooting, which is succeeded by a series of attacks on NCIS. NCIS' 1000th episode case is tied to the events of the mothership's pilot, "Yankee White," where Gibbs foiled an attempt at assassinating the President aboard Air Force One.
NCIS' 1000th episode case has the team look back at the show's history, resulting in an Easter egg-filled offering. CBS' premier procedural has been on the air since 2003, after Jag successfully launched a spinoff show, which became the franchise's mothership. Much has changed in the universe and the TV sphere since then, but NCIS remains steadfast in terms of ratings for the network. In fact, it doesn't show any signs of slowing down anytime soon. The 1,000th episode of the NCIS franchise is coming up, and we finally have a full synopsis.
This will be the 1,000th episode across all NCIS shows, including the spin-offs like Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Hawai’i.
It’s a big event for the franchise, and they even celebrated it on the NCIS set with a big cake.
Chris O’Donnell was on hand for that day. He used to play G. Callen on the NCIS: Los Angeles cast and his presence led to rumors about a guest star appearance.
Actor Sean Murray (Agent Timothy McGee) shared a set photo that revealed someone special returning to the NCIS cast. It will be a nice treat, but that’s not the only familiar face we will see on the big night.
Daniela Ruah (Kensi Blye on NCIS: LA) and Vanessa Lachey (Jane Tennant on NCIS: Hawai’i) also appear in Episode 1,000.

No one can say NCIS isn’t a successful TV show. With 20 seasons and counting, it has become downright iconic and spawned multiple spin-offs.
The original series has a proven episodic formula with compelling crimes and intriguing mysteries.
What it doesn’t have much of is happy relationships.
If you are a shipper, be warned. With rare exceptions, long-term romances are doomed on NCIS.
Couples are either teased but never get together, only get together offscreen, or break up far too fast to be satisfying to the fans who root for them.
And if a couple somehow miraculously does end up in a stable, loving relationship, well, the clock is ticking because one of them is likely to die.
So read on as I list the NCIS couples that infuriated, depressed, or simply broke my heart.
Gibbs and Shannon - Death
NCIS started with a tragic love story, albeit mostly offscreen and shown in flashbacks.

We’ve had big losses on NCIS before — like when Kate was shot by Ari , or when Jenny Sheperd died at the end of season 5, or when Ziva’s dad and Jackie Vance were killed in a drive-by shooting. So when we learned that Ziva (Cote de Pablo) was going to make an exit this season, I was terrified for her. But her exit not only — as we were promised — left Ziva in one piece, it left room for a return.
That said, this was a hard episode to watch because it was like an emotional bullet to the heart.

Gibbs is about to kill someone; and the rest of his team has resigned. Perhaps this wasn't as dramatic a cliffhanger as the end of NCIS Season 9, but it still rates as fascinating. And at least Ducky isn't out on a beach somewhere dying, so there's that.
Dod Investigator Parsons isn't through with Gibbs yet either. And we have to wait until the fall to see how it all goes down. Looks like the writers have done a brilliant job at keeping us on the hook.
That said, it's time to take a look back at NCIS Season 10. Read on for more in this TV Fanatic Report Card...
Best episode: "Shiva" set the bar for the rest of the season. In it, we got to see a heartbroken and vengeful Ziva, and a strong and very silent and wise Tony. His serious behavior was such a departure from the norm...

Next week, on the Season 10 finale of NCIS, loyalty will be on trial.
The hunt for Eli David and Jackie Vance's killer turns into a witch hunt against Gibbs and the team, whose unconventional methods may threaten their entire future at the agency they've given so much too.
If Dod investigator Richard Parsons (Colin Hanks) has his way, Leroy Jethro Gibbs' time at NCIS may come to an end. But we all know Gibbs, and know he does not intend to go down without a fight.
His late mentor Mike Franks (Muse Watson) even returns to guide him.
As we discussed in our NCIS review, the writers, through Parsons' complex "Evil McGee" character, played fans like a tune last night, with Ziva, Vance and ultimately Gibbs in the proverbial crosshairs.
Next Tuesday, we'll see how it plays out, as the family aspect of the team and the show will...

NCIS, Season 10, Episode 20: “Chasing Ghosts”
Written by Nicole Mirante-Matthews
Directed by Arvin Brown
Airs Tuesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
Opening with a recap, “Chasing Ghosts” gets back on track by focusing on Ziva’s discreet pursuit of Ilan Bodnar, the man responsible for the deaths of Eli David and Jackie Vance.
The episode deals less with the progress of Ziva’s manhunt and more with Tony’s suspicions of her, flipping the perspective from her grief, to his concern for her. His sleuth mode initiates enjoyable banter between him and McGee, whose deception in the end sets up possible conflict between the two in the future, hopefully further explored as the season reaches its climax. While he’s usually invading his co-worker’s work space with the intent of exposing their secrets, Tony’s loyalty to Ziva on a more personal level suggests that he’s more likely...

Next week on NCIS, we pick up in the aftermath of last night's shocking conclusion.
In retaliation for the deaths of Eli David and Jackie Vance, and the apparent attack on Tony and Ziva, the team feverishly searches for Bodnar despite orders from Homeland Security to give up the case.
Was that Bodnar trying to do away with Ziva, or is there more to it? Was his claim that she's seeing this in the wrong light surprisingly true? And what is the true story of new Mossad Director Elbaz?
Finally, what will happen to Tony and Ziva after that terrifying-looking accident?
Read our NCIS review for TV Fanatic's take on the events of "Berlin," then share with us how you think things will play out next Tuesday, and over the next three weeks as Season 10 comes to an end.

After an NCIS episode that brought us some of their best moments together yet (see our NCIS review), Tony and Ziva were sideswiped by a black vehicle and the agents' status remains unknown.
Also, Ilan Bodnar is still in the wind, and Mossad's new director is as complex as they come.
Will Tony and Ziva survive? Cote de Pablo coyly tells EW, “We are one step closer to the killer who took away Eli David and Jackie Vance, so I think the audience wants some sort of resolution.”
“I don’t know if we’re going to get to the actual unfolding of it completely [by the end of the season].”

Steve: I want in.
2. What was your favorite scene from "Chasing Ghosts?"
Doug: It's a toss-up between two scenes. The first was Palmer's adamant refusal to be pigeon-holed by Ducky, when he said: "No, you know what? I take it back. It is not okay. I appreciate you throwing me a bone once in a while, or in this case a finger but it's not enough.

NCIS, Season 10, Episode 15: “Hereafter”
Written by Nichole Mirante-Matthews
Directed by Tony Wharmby
Airs Tuesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
Despite the strengths for which it is praised, NCIS has its share of recurring issues, occasionally exhibited by withdrawn characters, uninspired subject matter, emotionally weightless subplots, and flat attempts at humor. The greatness of a season or a single episode fluctuates depending on the emphasis given to each element. “Hereafter” manages to spotlight the best and the brightest, resulting in a well-rounded episode in spite of brief moments that recall those issues.
The episode assumes the task of dealing with the emotional aftermath of Jackie Vance’s death, allowing Rocky Carroll a shot at all the heavy lifting. He carries the story from beginning to end, though it takes a few undesirable twists. His confrontation with his wife’s lawyer and scenes with his children display the range of emotions...

CBS’ NCIS blindsided fans with a double-whammy last week, capping an already tense hour with an abrupt machine-gun assault on the Vance home, where Eli and Ziva David were guests for dinner. When the dust settled, two lives were lost – Ziva’s father, and Vance’s wife Jackie. As Gibbs’ team readies to mourn the dead in this Tuesday’s “Shiva” (airing at 8/7c), showrunner Gary Glasberg shared a look at the devastating aftermath for two of NCIS’ finest.

NCIS, Season 10, Episode 11: “Shabbat Shalom”
Written by Christopher J. Waild
Directed by Dennis Smith
Airs Tuesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
NCIS returns from its holiday hiatus with “Shabbat Shalom”, an episode that rises above seasonal standards, delivering memorable emotional performances by Cote de Pablo and Michael Nouri, who guest stars in a final appearance as Mossad Director Eli David.
The cold open is the first in a string of scenes which closely resemble any given episode of NCIS. A father and son discover a body in the stream where they are fishing and trying to endure the outing despite a strained relationship. The body found is that of Tyler Wilkes, a reporter who made his way dishing dirt on government agencies and military operations. Impersonating a petty officer, Wilkes was investigating the presence of illegal substances on Navy bases, presumably murdered for getting too close to the truth.

CBS' promotional photos remind us of the heartbreak she - and Vance - experienced.
After "Shabbat Shalom," how far will they go in order to protect their most vulnerable colleagues, while mourning their unspeakable losses, in "Shiva"? Part II of this arc should be fascinating to watch.

NCIS picks up next week in the shocking aftermath of what we witnessed Tuesday night.
The events of "Shabbat Shalom" (see our NCIS review and Round Table for a full breakdown) clearly hit close to home, leaving the team scrambling for answers - and demanding justice.
How far will they go in order to protect their most vulnerable colleagues? Where will the line be drawn between personal and professional? Between retribution and upholding their duty?
Check out the promo below, for "Shiva," and share your predictions below:

Matt Craven reprises his role as SecNav Clay Jarvis and Paula Newsome will appear again as Jackie Vance; it's unclear if she will appear in flashbacks, or if she somehow survived, as some have theorized.
Greg Germann (Ally McBeal) also guest stars as Deputy Director Jerome Craig.
"Shabbat Shalom," incidentally, was watched by 21.11 million people, the highest-rated episode of NCIS...

Our NCIS review broke down "Shabbat Shalom," this week's episode of TV's #1 show, in detail.
Now, TV Fanatic staff members Steve Marsi, Douglas Wolfe and Eric Hochberger have assembled for our weekly Round Table Q&A discussion of various events and topics from this powerful installment.
Join in as we analyze the return (and demise) of Eli, Vance's loss, and what comes next ...
----------------------------------
1. Describe this episode in one word (or two, or three, or four).
Steve: Powerful and unexpected.
Doug: Brilliant and heartbreaking.
Eric: Still in shock.
2. Best episode of NCIS Season 10 so far?
Steve: With a show like this, "best" can mean so many things. The balance of episodes varies so much in terms of weightiness and symbolism, humor and continuity, although almost all of them are excellent. I will say I haven't been this shaken up by an installment since Season 8's memorable "Swan Song."
Doug: I've...

Wow. We lost two main characters in this show - people who played a major role in the lives of Ziva David and Leon Vance. I did not see that coming.
The variations on the theme of family relationships woven throughout "Shabbat Shalom" were hard to miss. We began with a father who desperately wanted his son to open up to him, only to have the connection made - albeit in a weird way - after they discover a dead body together while fishing.
Dad: Sorry, we shouldn't have stayed.
Son: Are you kidding? Dad this is like the most bad-assed thing we've ever done together. Thanks, dad. | permalink
The body turned out to be a disgraced reporter who was masquerading as a Navy petty officer while in pursuit of a story. In a typical NCIS episode, there are two stories going on: one involving a murder, and another involving...

Our NCIS review broke down the latest installment of television's #1 show in great detail.
Now, TV Fanatic staff members Steve Marsi, Matt Richenthal and Eric Hochberger have assembled for their weekly Round Table Q&A discussion of events from last week's episode, "The Good Son."
Join in below, as we analyze Gibbs, Vance, and much more ...

Describe this episode in one word (or two, or three).
Steve: Enlightening and surprising.
Matt: Very nicely done.
Eric: Complexly crafted.
What was your favorite quote or one-liner from the episode?
Steve: Tony, while trying to stifle his wisecracking in the wake of Gibbs' performance review comment, letting the crabs joke slip out and regretting it two nanoseconds later.
Matt: "It's not your fault." - Gibbs
Eric: I think I'm going to starting substituting "yabba" for "talking" in everyday speech.
Best scene?
Steve: Vance fighting back the tears as Michael was escorted out,...

NCIS is expanding Director Vance's family tree, and in fact had Murder on its mind when casting Leon's missus. Paula Newsome, who last starred on ABC's Women's Murder Club, will guest-star as Jackie Vance on the CBS drama's March 17 episode. Khamani Griffin (All of Us) and China Anne McClain (House of Payne), both age 10, appear in the same episode as Leon's kids. Leon himself, of course, is played by TVGuide.com celebrity blogger Rocky Carroll.
