Distinguished theatrical actress, on stage from August 1888. Her father was the Dean of Exeter. A star of the West End, Vanbrugh came to be regarded as one of Britain's foremost dramatic performers in plays by Ibsen and playwrights Arthur Wing Pinero and J.M. Barrie, both of whom she was able to count among her friends.
