John Carpenter's 1981 sci-fi film "Escape from New York" is set in the far-flung future of 1997 when crime in across America has suddenly increased 400%. In response, the government has walled off the island of Manhattan, transforming the entire city into a massive prison. Food is airdropped in every so often. All escape bridges are lousy with landmines. There are no guards apart from those walking the parapets. It's a lawless land with no escape. Any criminals and ne'er-do-wells are forced inside and left to their own devices.
The protagonist of "Escape from New York" (I hesitate to call him a hero) is Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell), a freelance badass and thief who was recently apprehended by the government (represented by Lee Van Cleef). Snake is told that Air Force One has exploded over New York, and an escape pod containing the president (Donald Pleasence) has landed inside the New York prison.

Now we’re moving on to an examination of the 1994 sequel Pumpkinhead 2: Blood Wings (watch it Here) – and since this isn’t exactly one of the most popular sequels around, we’re covering it in an episode of our The Black Sheep video series. To find out why we think Pumpkinhead II deserves more appreciation, check out the video embedded above!
Directed by Jeff Burr from a screenplay written by Constantine Chachornia and Ivan Chachornia, Pumpkinhead 2: Blood Wings has the following synopsis: In a small Kansas town in 1958, a group of teenagers torture and kill a disfigured orphan named Tommy. After revisiting John Carpenter's Escape From New York, I am pleased to say that this thrilling dystopian masterpiece still holds up great and maintains its tough cynical bite at authority, appropriately reflecting the mistrust society still has with political authority today. What truly makes Snake Plissken remain an iconic character is not just his nihilistic manner and rebellious attitude, it's mostly the mystery that surrounds him. With Hollywood's urgent need today to over-explain every character and world in popular entertainment properties till every sense of awe and wonder that made these movies great die with one last desperate gasp, it's refreshing to revisit a time that respected the power of mystery and mythology.
Snake is a lone gunslinger with combat skills, an Eastwood growl, and an eyepatch who's seen some crazy shit and is thrown into a dangerous situation with his life on the line—that's all this movie needs to explain,...

On a scale of one to ten, how scary has your Monday been so far? Whatever your score, never fear: we're about to make it scarier for you. And when you're killed in these dreams, you wake up dead! Cue caffeine overdoses and some of the scariest moments of the '80s. Look out for the scene where a young up-and-comer called Johnny Depp faces off with the monstrous Krueger.A Nightmare On Elm Street was directed by Wes Craven, and also starred Heather Langenkamp, Nick Corri, Ronee Blakley, Amanda Wyss, Joe Unger and Charles Fleischer. It will hit UK cinemas on October 31, for maximum spookiness.

Of all the ’80s slasher films, a group crowded with all sorts of efforts, Wes Craven’s A Nightmare On Elm Street still reigns supreme as one of the more imaginative of the entire bunch. Nightmares have been fodder for many horror films over the decade, but here they’re particularly insidious and memorable. The film basically turned its producing studio, New Line Cinema, into a major player, gave a fresh breath of life into a genre that had grown stale, boosted the career of Craven, turned its scarred bogeyman Freddy Krueger into a pop culture icon (hat, red & green striped sweater, designer glove and all), made Robert Englund (as Krueger) a bona fide genre star, and provided a key early role for Johnny Depp. The impact A Nightmare On Elm Street has made in about 29 years is undeniable. The story, for those out there who have lived under a rock all this time,...

*full disclosure: a screener of this film was provided by Mti Home Video
**here be some very minor spoilers.
Director/writer: Jay Woelfel.
Tagline: "Welcome to the Carnival of Fear."
Set in the actual Chippewa Lake Park, Closed for the Season is more thriller than horror. To be released August 23rd, 2011, this is a film that, while small, offers an interesting message of nostalgia and the supernatural. The cover art for this film would suggests something much more horrific, but Closed for the Season is simply a small story of two childhood friends trapped within a lonely amusement park. Carnivals have feelings; did you know that? From here, the characters must find a way to escape the carny, or to satisfy the park's desire for attention.

Tammi Sutton is one of the busiest people working in horror today. Having covered what seems like every aspect of the filmmaking process from being a director, producer, production designer, art designer, costume designer, actress, heck she is even editing one of her upcoming films! Is there anything that this bright up and comer can't tackle?!? Judging by her resume, no! I recently had the chance to ask her a few questions about her latest genre film, Sutures. It is refreshing to have another female voice directing in the horror genre. What made you want to start making horror films?
