The Annecy Animation Festival is a special place where the majority of attendees are animation students and young folks just getting their start in the industry. There is a palpable excitement and genuine desire to know how these projects are made that is simply not present at any other festival or convention. But, much like Comic-Con, the studio presence is increasing with every year and trying to overwhelm attendees' attention with flashy titles, known IP, and big name talent. Sometimes it works great, though, like in 2022 when Netflix gave a bunch of auteurs the space to realize their passion projects and showcased movies such as "Wendell & Wild" and Guillermo del Toro's "Pinocchio."
This year, Netflix returned to Annecy with another big presentation showcasing some of its upcoming titles, including Zack Snyder's animated show "Twilight of the Gods" and the many other titles it has coming out in the next year or so.

Netflix Animation revealed a string of sneak peeks and new clips of its upcoming projects, including the return of villainous penguin Feathers McGraw in “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl,” Wednesday at the Annecy Animation Festival.
“Wallace & Gromit” creator Nick Park was on hand with fellow Aardman director Merlin Crossingham to present a new clip from their upcoming feature “Vengeance Most Fowl.” Four-time Academy Award-winner Park also wrote the story, in which Gromit’s concern that Wallace is becoming too dependent on his inventions proves justified when Wallace invents a “smart” gnome that seems to develop a mind of its own. The movie also marks the return of Feathers McGraw, the sinister antagonist who first appeared in Park’s Oscar-winning 1993 short “The Wrong Trousers,” who is back on the loose.

Guillaume Canet’s ambitious 64M euros (70M) production Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom was on track to be the top opener at the French box office on Wednesday, but it remains to be seen whether the film can match the success of its predecessors.
Pathé released the title on 950 screens across France in the biggest theatrical launch of early 2023 for local productions. The mini-major bankrolled the film and is also a producer alongside Alain Attal’s Tresor Films and Yohan Baiada at Les Enfants Terribles.
In first figures for the Paris region, which can be a bellwether for box office performance across the rest of the country, especially for mainstream local productions like Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom, the film scored the strongest opening.
By 2 pm local time, the film had drawn 9,091 spectators in 84 theaters, split between 3,274 admissions on 29 screens in the city and 5,817 admissions in outer Paris.

“The Little Nicholas: Happy as Can Be” by Benjamin Massoubre and Amandine Fredon is having its world premiere at a Special Screening at the Cannes Film Festival on May 20.
Several years in the making, the film brings together the world-famous French schoolboy and his creators, author René Goscinny and cartoonist Jean-Jacques Sempé, as it goes back and forth between their world and his imaginary world.
Translated into more than 30 languages, the Little Nicholas short stories have been adapted to fiction but never to animation until now. For the creative team, it was essential to stay true both to Goscinny’s short stories and to Sempé’s drawings.
“The main challenge was to create the Little Nicholas’ world in animation and, at the same time, remain faithful to Sempé’s style – his drawings are very small, they’re made in ink, which gives them a sort of awkward but very lively energy,...

The adventures of René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo’s potion-supping Gaul creation Asterix and his friends are well loved, since their debut on the pages of Pilote magazine in 1959, all the way up until this new animated feature based on the enduring madcap French creation. In the 60 year history of the series, there have been a plethora of internationally made motion pictures based on the stories and characters, including 4 live-action outings starring Gérard Depardieu and 10 animated films. This latest one, The Secret of the Magic Potion, being released both in cinemas and on Sky Cinema, is hardly the standard barer for all Asterix films but is a fun family flick all the same.
The film centres more on druid Getafix (John Innes), who is faced with finding a replacement after age may be catching up with him. Accompanying him on this important quest are Asterix (Ken Kramer) and Obelix (C. Ernst Harth...

René Goscinny and illustrator Albert Uderzo gave the world a charming gift when they debuted The Adventures of Asterix in 1959. 60 years on, through excursions off the page and across the big and small screens, our affection for the diminutive Gaul and his giant sidekick remains. The rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia are a powerful accessory.
This time – despite the ever-present threat of the Romans – the challenge faced by the feisty villagers comes from within. Getafix the Druid (brewer of the magic potion which sustains the village and gives Asterix his mighty powers) has taken a tumble and broken his leg. With his mortality mortifyingly evident and his present handicap, Getafix realises he needs an apprentice.
Armed with a shortlist from his fellow druid elders, protected by Asterix (Christian Clavier) and Obelix (Guillaume Briat) and accompanied by inquisitive young Impedimenta (Florence Foresti), Getafix (Bernard Alane) crisscrosses Gaul in search of a worthy...

When a film announces itself with such a deliberately and unapologetically brash title, it’s clear the filmmakers have probably tried their very best to entertain the intended audience of trash cinema connoisseurs. Thankfully, this knockabout horror/comedy – which is something akin to the characters of Bring It On taking a Wrong Turn – more or less delivers on that promise, but there’s also a fun take on female empowerment and resourcefulness amongst the lashings of gloopy splatter. And any film of this kind which begins with a country singer setting the scene through a ditty – who then periodically crops throughout to comment on the action – is undeniably worth a watch.
After a fun, whizzy Edgar Wright-like montage introducing us to the highly-competitive, merciless netball team The Falcons, we’re soon whipped away to the French countryside as the team make their way to another match. Rattling along in an Rv,...

If you’re a fan of the Asterix books – and the latest, Asterix And The Chariot Race is available now - and somebody asks you why, you might find yourself talking about the gleeful, tongue-in-cheek sense of humour, or the iconic colourful illustrations. A big part of its ongoing success must belong to the main characters who live in that nameless indomitable Gaulish village - for me, it’s Obelix in particular. I’ve always loved Obelix, who can eat an entire roast boar in a second and carry a menhir on one finger, yet has a deeply sensitive side and falls in love far too easily. I also really look forward to those adventures where the pirates appear, led by Redbeard, and inevitably get shipwrecked after a...

With a voice cast made up of some of the finest English comedian of today, including Jack Whitehall, Nick Frost, Matt Berry, and Harry Enfield, everyone’s favourite magic potion swigging, Roman bothering Gaul, Asterix, is on his way back to the big screen with Asterix: Mansions of the Gods. Based on the seventeenth book in Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo’s long running series of French comic books, the story sees Asterix’s village threatened with being absorbed into Roman culture when a massive estate is built beside it. The first Asterix movie in CG animation, it skews very close to the art style of the original books, while keeping much of the humour intact. For anybody who grew up with Asterix books, myself included, this seems to promise an entertaining hit of nostalgia. Asterix: The Mansions of the Gods hits our shores on August 19th.

Asterix films are traditionally big winners at the French box office, although the most recent ones have been live-action and seen some decrease in traction. The latest, Asterix: The Mansions Of The Gods, is a 3D animated adaptation of the comic books created by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo. Snd released the picture on November 26 on 696 screens with first-week grosses today coming in at a huge 6.2M euros ($7.64M) from nearly 780K admissions. The opening bests previous local performances of such animated hits as Frozen, Tangled, Monsters, Inc, and Cars. It was No. 1 at the weekend, topping the second frame of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and the fourth session for Interstellar. The first week puts it just behind Guardians Of The Galaxy and above Captain America: The Winter Soldier on the 2014 chart and makes it the 3rd biggest opening for a French animated film ever. The last Asterix movie,...

As this summer’s blockbuster season reminds us comic book adaptations are big business with the latest incarnations of heroes old and new filling the local picturehouse and running merry riot over box office records.
Given the twin benefits of a wealth of material on which to draw and a ready audience primed to see their favourites fleshed out and thrown onto a movie screen it seems that we’ll be seeing many more familiar, and some less familiar, cartoon characters in movies of their own.

The French authorities are demanding that the surviving Asterix co-creator pay hundreds of thousands of euros in back tax. It has been ruled that Albert Uderzo, who provided the art for the 24 books produced between 1959 and 1979, is a "simple illustrator" who should not have received France's authorial tax break, reports The Telegraph. It was decided that the tax break only applies to "people who have participated in writing the texts of the comic strip". Uderzo has been commanded to pay 203,000 (£171,000) to the government. "This is an injustice and a scandal," said Uderzo. "The brutality and lack of respect with which, (more)...
