Why Is Azula's Fire Blue In Avatar: The Last Airbender?
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

"Avatar: The Last Airbender" rose to a whole other level of greatness in its second, and some would say best, season. ("Book 2: Earth.") A lot of that comes down to two new characters the show introduced to its ensemble.

The heroes got a new teammate: Toph (Michaela Jill Murphy), the blind earthbending prodigy. But they also had a new threat to contend with: Fire Nation Princess Azula (Grey DeLisle), who was hunting both Avatar Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen) and her exiled brother Prince Zuko (Dante Basco). Smart, powerful, and ruthless, Azula is seemingly the "perfect princess." She's a firebending prodigy and success comes naturally to her.

Another detail that sets Azula apart is her firebending. In "Avatar," where people can bend one of the four classical elements, Firebenders transmute fire out of their own breath and chi and then control the flames.

One Episode Of Avatar: The Last Airbender Remade A Classic Western
Image
It's hard to find a TV series more beloved than "Avatar: The Last Airbender." Unlike some fandoms out there, the "Avatar" audience lives in shared adoration of the show — as harmonious as the four nations of water, earth, fire, and air once were. There are 61 "Avatar" episodes split across three seasons (or "Books"). Of those, season 2 "Zuko Alone" is often singled out as one of the best, if not the best, of the whole show. "Avatar" sequel "The Legend of Korra" even did a spiritual follow-up: "Korra Alone." The exiled prince of the Fire Nation, Zuko (Dante Basco) is introduced in season 1 hunting Avatar Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen). In season 2, Zuko falls even lower, losing even the meager resources he previously had. He has to put his Avatar hunt on pause because the Fire Nation is hunting him too.

"Zuko Alone" is both a standalone episode and one that cannot be skipped.

Avatar: The Last Airbender Casting Director Reveals Why Original Cast Isn't Returning for New Movie
Image
The casting director for The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbenderdiscusses not bringing back the original series' voice cast for the next Avatar animated feature.

In a Reddit Ama session, official casting director Jenny Jue answered fans' questions about Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action adaptation, Snowpiercer and other productions, including the upcoming animated feature The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender. When asked why the original voice cast didn't return for the upcoming film, Jue explained, "Since the original show was released, there’s been more emphasis in Vo to match actors’ ethnic/racial background to the characters they’re portraying. Atla is a fictional world, but there are cultural influences for each nation/kingdom, and we wanted to explore the talent from those groups."

Netflix's Avatar Season 2 Star Confirms 1 Big Change for Live-Action Toph (& Fans Might Not Be Happy)

The next star of Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbenderoffers fans a controversial update regarding her take on Toph.

Speaking to The Direct, Miya Cech, who will portray fan-favorite character Toph Beifong in Season 2 of Netflix's live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, explained the slightly different direction she is taking the role. "My version of Toph is going to be a little older and slightly more feminine. I feel like I wanted to work into a very humanizing space for her because, you know, she was a cartoon," Cech explained. She also noted that she has met with original Toph voice actress, Michaela Jill Murphy, with whom she shares a "similar take in terms of process" with regard to the character.

What Happened To Azula After Avatar: The Last Airbender?
Image
If there's a television canon, then "Avatar: The Last Airbender" is definitely in it. Since its debut on Nickelodeon in 2005, the animated fantasy show has remained beloved by its oldest fans and won the hearts of countless new ones. Personally, "Avatar: The Last Airbender" has one of my favorite character ensembles in all of TV. Its leads were young enough for the target audience to relate to, yet complex enough for adults to be just as rewarded watching them.

Take Zuko (Dante Basco), the scarred prince of the Fire Nation who goes from villain to hero. Best redemption arc ever? It's up there. But standing next to Zuko as one of the show's most complex characters is his sister, Princess Azula. While her brother was always torn between good and evil, Azula relishes the latter. She seems like the "perfect" Princess: powerful, ruthless, and favored by her father Fire Lord...

I’m Already 99% Sure Which Role Invincible Star Steven Yeun Is Playing in the Upcoming Avatar Movie

A new movie following the exploits of Aang, the last airbender, has been in development at Paramount Pictures. The film will serve as a continuation of the popular animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, which aired for three seasons and concluded in 2008.

While the project has been long gestating, new updates have dropped from time to time. The latest update regarding the project confirmed the addition of Invincible star Steven Yeun, who recently wrapped up the third season of the animated superhero show.

Yeun’s addition might raise some questions over the actor’s exact role in the upcoming movie. However, diehard fans might’ve already guessed the character he will voice, given his history with the franchise. Here is the role I’m almost convinced Yeun will voice in the new Avatar movie.

Original Aang actor opens up about Netflix's live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender
Image
Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender is regarded as one of the very best animated series of all-time. Created by Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, the show was more than just another series aimed at young audiences: it was full of deeply emotional storytelling, covering themes of war, oppression, grief, and moral ambiguity.

Because of its incredible world-building and multi-faceted story, Avatar was always a top contender for a live-action adaptation. And that's exactly what it got...but the results were mixed. For instance, legendary director M. Night Shyamalan attempted to adapt the series to the big screen with The Last Airbender in 2010, but the results were disastrous. The movie was awful; look no further than its 5% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

This brings us to Netflix's live-action remake, which aired its first season in 2024. Despite Dimartino and Konietzko dropping out of the project early on due to creative differences,...

The New ‘Avatar’ Series Is About the Wrong Earthbender
Image
Created by Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, Nickelodeon'sAvatar: The Last Airbender still astounds viewers more than two decades after its premiere; fans instantly resonated with this world of elemental benders and dangerous spirits, with the unbearable burdens of its protagonist, Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen), teaching them the value of community in the face of hatred. It was a beautiful narrative many were gutted to see end after three seasons, but luckily, this world's intricate story continued in the sequel seriesThe Legend of Korra. And now we know that it will be fleshed out even further in the recently announced follow-up, Avatar: Seven Havens.

'You're Going to Inevitably Not Satisfy Everybody': Original Avatar: The Last Airbender's Aang Opens Up About Netflix's Live-Action Series
Image
Avatar: The Last Airbender’s Zach Tyler Eisen -- the voice actor for Aang for the original Nickelodeon animated series -- has discussed the show's impact two decades later, as well as its somewhat divisive Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action remake on Netflix. According to Eisen, the producers had "a very hard job in trying to remake this beloved cartoon from a lot of people's childhoods."

Per a Cbr interview with Eisen at MegaCon Orlando 2025, the 2024 live-action remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender was "great," but "wasn't exactly what the cartoon was, because you can't just do that." Eisen also stated, "They have a very hard job in trying to remake this beloved cartoon from a lot of people's childhoods, and you're going to inevitably not satisfy everybody. But they were bold enough to take some risks with it, and I think it paid off."

The New Avatar Series Needs To Address ‘The Legend of Korra’s Greatest Tragedy
Image
The world of Avatar: The Last Airbenderis rich and constantly expanding. After Aang's (Zach Tyler Eisen) story concluded, the beloved series got a sequel, The Legend of Korra, which explored the next incarnation of the Avatar, Korra (Janet Varney). And the universe is set to expand once again with the announcement of a new series focusing on the Earthbender following Korra. Though little is known about the upcoming series, Avatar: Seven Havens, it promises a very different world for the next Avatar. Set in a "world shattered by a devastating cataclysm" where the Avatar is not regarded as the hero it once was, the new series will be unique, much like The Legend of Korra's 1920s-inspired city set it apart from its predecessor.

Who Does Korra End Up With In The Avatar Universe?
Image
The 2010s and 2020s saw a surge of American children's media that put queerness front and center. Take the work of N.D. Stevenson, such as the Netflix series "She-Ra and the Princesses of Power" and the animated film "Nimona," based on his graphic novel. From "Steven Universe" to "The Owl House," cartoons have gotten a lot gayer in the last decade.

And it is almost precisely a decade because Nickelodeon's "The Legend of Korra" is the show that broke down the dam in 2014. In the show's fourth and final season, Avatar Korra (Janet Varney) falls in love with her best friend, Asami Sato (Seychelle Gabriel). A sequel to "Avatar: The Last Airbender," "The Legend of Korra" is set in a fantasy world where people can bend one of the four elements. Korra, as the reincarnation of world defender the Avatar, can bend all four. If kids can accept a world that fantastical,...

Every Season Of Avatar: The Last Airbender Ranked
Image
Water. Earth. Fire. Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when "Avatar: The Last Airbender" premiered in 2005. Since then, animation hasn't been the same. The Nickelodeon cartoon, as created by Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, takes place in a fantasy world inspired by Asian culture and mythology. At the center of its story is Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen), the latest incarnation of the Avatar and, as such, the only living being capable of wielding all four elements and stopping the evil Fire Lord Ozai before he can conquer the world.

It didn't take long for "Avatar: The Last Airbender" to set itself apart from other action-heavy animated shows in its day on its way to becoming one of the best and most unique American cartoons of all time. Alongside "Teen Titans," "Avatar" helped popularize anime-inspired cartoons in the West and started discussions among...

10 Most Heroic Characters in 'Avatar: The Last Airbender,' Ranked
Image
One of the most celebrated fantasy cartoons in television history, Avatar: The Last Airbender largely revolves around its three heroes: Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen), Katara (Mae Whitman), and Sokka (Jack DeSena). Though they get the most attention as the protagonists of the story, they're far from the only characters one might call heroic. There are many others, even people in the more antagonistic Fire Nation, who also have noble qualities that befit such a characterization. You don't have to be perfect to be selfless and courageous, after all. It's also not necessary to be a major player in the narrative or even be a person to qualify as heroic.

Aang's Role as a Father Still Disappoints Atla Fans
Image
Aang was always known for being a lovable, thoughtful character in Avatar: The Last Airbender. However, the way his adult children talk about him in The Legend of Korra disappointed fans of the original series. Bumi, Kya, and Tenzin are Aang and Kataras children, and their negative opinion dampens what Aang always represented in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Aangs children remember him as a neglectful and imposing figurehead that they could never live up to. This portrait of adult Aang takes away everything fans loved about his character in the original, from his fun-loving spontaneity to his dedication to his beliefs. Aang changed too much as an adult in The Legend of Korra simply to make a point about familial perspectives.

“This is why I dislike Aang a little bit”: Aang’s Claims About Never Killing Anyone is Still a Heated Debate Among Avatar Fans
Image
Avatar: The Last Airbender’s Aang remains a controversial character as many fans question if he really has not killed anybody despite the amount of fights and battles he has gone through. Surely, he has the skills and wits to control every element, but what about those who are not gifted like him?

Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender

The question still lingers: has Aang killed anyone? The general answer would be no, not explicitly. But certainly, fans cannot say he is completely innocent. Even though he is the Avatar and he follows certain tenets, he has still hurt a lot of people.

Avatar: The Last Airbender's Wildest Crack Pairings
Image
Animated series like Avatar: The Last Airbender will always encourage fans to exercise their imagination and picture all-new fights or scenarios. What-if is always fun with series like Avatar, and that includes romance, too. There are a few canon romantic pairings, and some solid what-ifs such as Sokka and Princess Yue. Meanwhile, some fans like to think up truly bizarre pairings that the rest of the fandom rejects.

Every fan is free to imagine whatever romantic pairing they like, but their pet pairings/ships probably won't impress the other Avatar viewers, and such pairings can lead to strange or even uncomfortable fan art or fanfiction. Even when "what if?" is the rule, some romantic ships just don't add up, such as if the two characters have zero compatability or if their imagined romance is downright unhealthy or problematic in some way.

Ranking Avatar: The Last Airbender's Strongest Firebenders
Image
Avatar: The Last Airbender's combat system is based on the manipulation of fire, water, earth, and air, and some elemental benders are truly gifted. Each element has its own superstars, with Toph Beifong being the best earthbender and Pakku ranking among the most proficient waterbenders. As for firebending, Avatar's cartoon depicts plenty of skilled benders, many of whom have years of training and natural talent to push them to the next level.

Firebending is all about aggression and direct attacks, which made it the optimal element to launch the Hundred-Year War. Skilled firebenders have come and gone, with Roku and Sozin being the top firebenders of their time. During the main events of Avatar: The Last Airbender, several other firebenders rose to the top as the story's strongest fighters of all. ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Actor Says Changing Sokka Was “Necessary”
Image
Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender has been the subject of its fair share of discourse, but Ian Ousley has an interesting perspective. The actor who plays Sokka recently explained how he feels about changing the character from animation to live-action. Nickelodeon’s fantasy series about the master of all four elements has been a beloved source of entertainment since its premiere in 2005. Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen), along with brother-sister duo Katara (Mae Whitman) and Sokka (Jack De Sena), travel the world in a coming-of-age story that is as humorous as it is emotionally resonant. Themes such as redemption, love triangles, and grief are prevalent throughout the show.

Aang, Katara, and Sokka start as young teens and quickly mature due to the pressures of the Hundred Year War. “People do not know that”: Life Imitated Art for Avatar: The Last Airbender After Series Almost Got Canceled After Season 2

In a twist of fate that can only be described as ‘life imitated art,’ Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko’s Avatar: The Last Airbender nearly met its demise after Season 2. The makers of the show battled against all odds to keep their creation alive, just as Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph faced seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

Not Aang, the Actual Strongest Airbender Never Even Had a Teacher to Begin With
Image
After getting acquainted with Avatar: The Last Airbender, most fans must have been utterly convinced that indeed Aang is the strongest Air Nomad Avatar. However, the storyline of that universe is vast, and although Twinkle Toes (as Toph calls him) may be an Air Nomad way more powerful than the very first Avatar, he isn’t the strongest one out there.

Aang in the Avatar universe

Instead, the title of the strongest Air Nomad goes to one other person who struggled even more than Twinkle Toes throughout her life: Malu. Although she never appeared in the animated series of the Avatar universe, there was no other Air Nomad more powerful than her. What’s more, she didn’t even have a teacher, to begin with, and reached these levels of strength by herself!

“She found the secret to immortality”: Aang is Not the Most Powerful Avatar But He is Way Stronger Than the Very First Avatar
Image
Avatar: The Last Airbender has taken the entertainment world by storm. The series has become one of the most successful live-action anime adaptations in the world. Also, it has reignited the love fans had for the original series created by Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko and fans are now eagerly waiting for season 2.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

The series focuses on Aang, the last Airbender who is also an Avatar and has the burden of saving the entire world from the fire kingdom. The Avatar is the human personification of light and peace who has a relationship with the Avatar Spirit. They are the strongest beings in the entire world.

Since the Avatar is the only physical being capable of bending the four elements, it is expected of them to become proficient in the four bending arts and use their powers to maintain harmony and balance among the world’s four nations.

Avatar: The Last Airbender Wild Theory Explains Why Aang and the Other Airbenders Cannot Fly
Image
The Avatar: The Last Airbender universe is arguably one of the most exciting fantasy worlds that fans have ever dived into. Introducing its audiences to stunning characters who can telekinetically manipulate one out of the 4 major elements—air, water, earth, or fire—through ‘bending’, a practice inspired by the Chinese martial arts, the series garnered a massive fanbase.

Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005)

But in this adventurously fantastic universe, fans are also stuck with some yet-to-be-officially-answered questions about the abilities of the character. One of the most asked of these was why Aang and the other Airbenders could not take flight. And while these questions weren’t answered by the creators, fans have found the answer to it by themselves via a wild theory.

We Need To Talk About This 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Romance
Image
Avatar: The Last Airbender takes place in a fantastical world with spirits, bending, and cute animal hybrids, but some things are universal. And that's where romance comes into play. As they journey around the world, more than a few relationships develop between the young characters. Yet no romance is as central to the series as Aang's (Zach Tyler Eisen) and Katara's (Mae Whitman). This isn't particularly surprising. As the main character and the first girl to join the group, it seems natural. Over the course of the series, the characters go from friends to more, as the finale ends with a kiss between them. The sequel series, The Legend of Korra, even introduced their children and grandchildren, proving that their relationship lasted despite their youth.
