We’re talking about the British TV series that originally aired for six seasons back in the ’60s, running for a total of 161 episodes. Deadline reports that the new take on The Avengers TV series is coming our way from StudioCanal, which owns the rights to The Avengers catalog. Mickey Down and Konrad Kay, the writing team behind the HBO/BBC series Industry, have written the script for the pilot episode and Sex Education director Ben Taylor is on board to direct and executive produce. The Warner Bros. Discovery production company Wall to Wall is co-producing the project with StudioCanal.

Despite rumors that the Avengers reboot could end up on HBO, it’s not clear which network or streamer the new show will end up calling home. The HBO rumors have been denied.

Reboot The Avengers All You Like, But That Title Means Marvel Now
Image
The UK’s second most famous 1960s British spy fantasy after James Bond is finally getting its long-rumoured reboot, reports Deadline. But what are they going to call it?

Two years before Iron Man, Hulk, Thor and co. made their comic book debut as ‘The Avengers’ in 1963, a UK TV series of the same name arrived that would continue all the way through the decade, and beyond in the form of 1970s sequel The New Avengers.

The Avengers was a one-hour weekly spy adventure series created by Doctor Who co-creator Sydney Newman, and starring Patrick Macnee as secret agent John Steed, with Bond actor Honor Blackman, Dame Diana Rigg, and Linda Thorson. As one of the UK’s most fondly remembered spy series featuring two of our most recognisable-in-silhouette TV characters, there’s been talk of a revival for years.

And now, says Deadline, it’s happening. StudioCanal is reportedly...

The Avengers | The 1960s TV series is getting a remake
Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Downey Jr., Lou Ferrigno, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, and Chris Hemsworth in The Avengers: Os Vingadores (2012)
A new remake of the classic British TV series The Avengers is in the works, with Sex Education’s Ben Taylor said to be directing.

One of the most fondly-remembered TV shows of the 1960s is getting a 21st century remake, as Deadline reports that a reboot of The Avengers is bubbling away at rights holder StudioCanal.

A pilot has reportedly already been written for the spy series revival – Mickey Down and Konrad Kay are the wordsmiths responsible – and there’s also a director attached: Ben Taylor, best known for his work on Sex Education.

The Avengers originally aired from 1961 onwards, and starred Patrick Macnee as the dapper British secret agent and wearer of bowler hats, John Steed. Actor Ian Hendry originally starred alongside Macnee when the series began, but he soon left. A succession of glamorous female side-kicks followed, played by the likes of Honor Blackman, Diana Rigg and Linda Thorson.

'The Hardy Boys' Season 3 Review: Mystery Series Comes to a Trippy Close
Image
This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn't exist. When Hulu's The Hardy Boys premiered back in 2020, the serialized young-adult mystery series had a very distinct tone. While updating the landmark book series' 1920s setting for the more recently-nostalgic 1980s, the show followed Frank (Rohan Campbell) and Joe Hardy (Alexander Elliot) as they moved to the small town of Bridgeport following their mother's (Janet Porter) death. There they found a new group of friends, started to rebuild their lives with their aunt Trudy (Bea Santos), and became embroiled in the mysteries surrounding their maternal grandmother Gloria Estabrook (Linda Thorson). Now as the series comes to a close with the third and final season, it stands to reason that the stakes would be higher than ever, especially given the events of the Season 2 finale.

Paul O’Grady remembered as a ‘force for good’ by famous friends in ITV special
Image
Paul O’Grady has been remembered as a “force for good” by his famous friends including Carol Vorderman, Julian Clary and Michael Cashman.

Celebrities paid tribute to the drag queen turned TV and radio star during For The Love of Paul O’Grady on ITV on Sunday (9 April) evening, following his death last month at the age of 67.

O’Grady, who started out as a social worker while performing on the London nightclub circuit as the acerbic, platinum wig-wearing Lily Savage, died “unexpectedly but peacefully” on 28 March, his partner Andre Portasio said in a statement.

Remembering O’Grady for his activism, Vorderman, 62, said: “He was not only brilliant as an entertainer, he was a force for good.”

Former Labour Party leader Ed Miliband added: “He wasn’t just a fighter for the underdog, somebody who was willing to use his platform to speak up for people who didn’t have a platform,...

Paul O’Grady mural painted over days after presenter’s death
Image
A mural dedicated to the late Paul O’Grady has been covered up days after it was painted in Manchester.

The drag performer and presenter died “unexpectedly but peacefully” on 28 March aged 67.

Following the news, artist Chris Moore – who goes by the name Manchester Murals – created a tribute to O’Grady on the Fallowfield Loop in south Manchester.

Moore painted a large black-and-white mural showing the dog-loving presenter alongside a spaniel with a tennis ball in its mouth.

However, just a few days later, the mural was covered up by another artist’s piece.

Speaking to BBC News, Moore said that, while it was a “shame” his painting had been covered, this was just “part of the street art scene”.

“There were lots of people who went to visit it who were really disappointed on the day and people who planned to visit it over the coming days to remember Paul,...

Paul O’Grady’s husband Andre Portasio has spoken out for the first time since disclosing the news of the broadcaster’s death.

O’Grady died “unexpectedly but peacefully” aged 67 on Tuesday (28 March).

On Thursday (30 March), Portasio, 41, shared a photo of himself and O’Grady on Instagram.

In the picture, the couple can be seen smiling on a boat during what was their “last ever holiday together”.

Alongside the photo, Portasio wrote: “Browsing for a picture I found the last picture we ever took together. Unbeknownst to us back in January this would be our last ever holiday together.”

The former English National Ballet dancer added: “In time I hope to write to everyone individually and thank you for all posts, messages, phone calls, emails, cards and flowers of support.

“I much appreciate you all taking the time to reach out. I’m so very touched and I’m sure Paul would be too!

Paul O’Grady: Linda Thorson recalls ‘upbeat’ final call with presenter hours before his death
Image
The Avengers star Linda Thorson has recalled her last conversation with Paul O’Grady just hours before his death.

The TV presenter and comedian died “unexpectedly but peacefully” on Tuesday (28 March) night aged 67, with the news prompting an outpouring of tributes from his fans and famous friends.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain on Thursday (30 March), actor Thorson spoke about her friendship with O’Grady. The pair met due to the presenter’s love of the Sixties TV show The Avengers, in which Thorson starred.

“Paul rang me on Tuesday at 3 o’clock,” she told hosts Adil Ray and Susanna Reid. “We spoke for an hour – one of the best conversations I’ve ever had.”

Image
After news of the death of Paul O’Grady, fans have been looking back at some of the presenter’s most memorable moments.

‘Curtains’ – An Unsung Movie from the Golden Age of Slashers
Image
Horror fans have Canada to thank for a lot of their favorite movies from the ‘70s and ‘80s. Black Christmas, Prom Night, Happy Birthday to Me, My Bloody Valentine — all these fright flicks and more were in fact made in Canada. And for a lot of these vintage movies, they were produced in the Great White North because of an enticing tax incentive. It was all part of a desire to fire up the country’s movie industry. And so long as these potential productions were chiefly shot and edited in Canada, as well as starred mostly Canadian actors, the movies’ costs were up to 100 tax deductible. Like those before him, producer Peter R. Simpson (Prom Night III: The Last Kiss) acted on this attractive business offer, though his timing could have been better. By the time Curtains came out in 1983, Canada’s most significant era of “B” movies was...

Diana Rigg, Star of ‘The Avengers’ and ‘Game of Thrones,’ Dies at 82
Image
Diana Rigg, the Tony and Emmy winner who splashed into the world of television with her commanding turn as intelligence agent Emma Peel on “The Avengers” in the 1960s and played Lady Olenna Tyrell on “Game of Thrones” decades later, died Thursday at her home in England. She was 82.

Rigg was a venerable figure in Britain’s entertainment industry who worked incessantly on stage, TV and film. She famously thumbed her nose at convention in her private life and in later years seemed to enjoy her status as a grande dame.

“She was a beautiful kind and generous human being that enhanced the lives of all that knew her as well as a great actress. She leaves a great void in my heart,” said Lionel Larner, Rigg’s longtime friend and talent agent.

Having a key role in the biggest TV series of the past decade was a fitting career capper for Rigg.

Book Review: "The Avengers And New Avengers Collectibles" By John Buss
Amberley Books

2019

Review by Adrian Smith

One of the greatest and most commercially successful fantasy series of the 1960s, The Avengers actually started out in 1961 as a gritty crime drama focused on Doctor Keel, played by Ian Hendry, one of British television’s biggest stars at that time. In the first episode his wife is killed by drug dealers, and a mysterious undercover agent named John Steed, played of course by Patrick Macnee, helps him to avenge her death. The two end up working together on a number of other crime cases, thus forming the basis for a series that would ultimately outgrow its noir origins and become an outrageous Technicolor riot of science fiction, martial arts, sexy fashion and comedy. Once Doctor Keel was out of the picture, the playful ‘will they? – won’t they?’ (or even ‘have they? – haven’t they?’) nature of John Steed...

Drive-In Dust Offs: Curtains
When one looks back at mid ‘70s to early ‘80s horror, it’s quite surprising to see how many Canadian made films are nestled among fan favorites. Titles such as Black Christmas, Shivers, Prom Night, Happy Birthday to Me, and My Bloody Valentine continue to delight and shock veteran horror lovers or those just starting their jagged journey down the terror path. There is one, however, that due to a troubled production and poor distribution, seems relegated to the discount bins of time. Today, we’re pulling back the curtain on, uh, Curtains (1983), an unsung slasher weirder than a sack full of rabid beavers.

Released by Jensen Farley Pictures in March of ’83 in the Us, and September of ’84 by Norstar Releasing in (my home and) native land, Curtains received a very limited release in both countries, but coming as it did at a time when the Canadian film industry had...

‘The Avengers: The Complete Series 6′ Blu-ray Review
There are certain British shows that are remembered so fondly that the fear of nostalgia kicks in and you think they can’t possibly be as good as you remember them. I’ll admit when I started watching The Avengers: The Complete Series 6 on Blu-ray I had that fear… Gladly I had nothing to worry about.

In Series 6 we see the final episode of Diana Rigg as Emma Peel, and the introduction of Tara King (Linda Thorson). In some of the craziest episodes we see Vaudeville assassins (with a guest role by John Cleese), a Prisoner parody, invisible men and all other kinds of strange assassins all gunning for Steed (Patrick Macnee) and his partner in crime.

While there is no doubt that Diana Rigg’s Emma Peel was an excellent sidekick for Steed, I have to admit that Tara King has always been my favourite. There was a...

Patrick MacNee, Star Of "The Avengers", Dead At 93
Macnee with Honor Blackman in an early episode of The Avengers.

The distinguished British actor Patrick Macnee has passed away at age 93. Macnee personified the "typical" English gentleman in scores of films and TV appearances. He rose to fame as John Steed, the star of "The Avengers", the iconic TV series from the 1960s. He initially co-starred with Honor Blackman, then later Diana Rigg and Linda Thorson. He starred in "The New Avengers" in 1976. Macnee's also had a thriving career as a character actor in feature films. He appeared as young Jacob Marley in the classic 1951 version of "A Christmas Carol", as well as such diverse fare as "The Sea Wolves" , director Joe Dante's "The Howling" and spoofs such as "Young Doctors in Love" and "This is Spinal Tap". Macnee co-starred with his old friend Roger Moore in the 1985 James Bond film "A View to a Kill". He also...

Patrick Macnee, Star of 'The Avengers' TV Series, Dies at 93
Patrick Macnee, star of popular 1960s British TV series "The Avengers," died Thursday of natural causes at his home in California, surrounded by his family. He was 93.

Macnee starred on hit spy show "The Avengers," which ran on British television -- and was eventually rebroadcast around the globe -- from 1961 to 1969. The series also staged a short revival in the '70s.

Macnee was cast as assistant John Steed, second billing to Ian Hendry's Dr. David Keel character, but as the show continued, Macnee's quirky, bowler-wearing Steed became more popular, and he took over as the series lead after Hendry departed in 1961. Macnee played across from actresses such as Honor Blackman, Diana Rigg, Linda Thorson, and Joanna Lumley on the progressively feminist series, which was also notable for Macnee's insistence that his character never use a gun.

In addition to his work on that seminal show, Macnee was also a World War II veteran,...

Looking back at The Avengers
Alex pays a fond return revisit to 1960s classic TV series, The Avengers...

Stylish crime fighting, despicable evil masterminds, a bowler-hatted old Etonian gentleman spy and a series of beautiful leather cat-suited, kinky-booted, no-nonsense heroines. The Avengers had all this and more. What began as a monochrome tape series in January 1961 ran the whole of the Sixties, becoming a colourful slice of period hokum, full of flair, wit and sophistication, yet with its tongue firmly in its cheek.

Always the perfect gentleman, John Steed was played by Patrick Macnee. Originally billed second to the late Ian Hendry, Macnee was still playing Steed over 15 years later when he was teamed with the youthful duo of Joanna Lumley and Gareth Hunt for The New Avengers in 1976. In the 1998 film, the role of Steed was given to Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman played Emma Peel. I will say no more about the film.

"Curtains" Screened As Part Of Film Society Of Lincoln Center’S Horror Film Retrospective
Lesleh Donaldson with Cinema Retro columnist Todd Garbarini.

By Todd Garbarini

Richard Ciupka’s unfairly maligned 1983 horror film Curtains was screened recently as part of the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Scary Movies 7 exhibition that also included screenings of Lucky McKee’s new film All Cheerleaders Die, Michele Soavi’s highly regarded Cemetery Man (1994), Eli Roth’s new film The Green Inferno, John D. Hancock’s ultra creepy Let’s Scare Jessica to Death (1971), the New York premiere of Clive Barker’s 1990 film Nightbreed - the Cabal Cut, and Peter Carter’s brilliant Rituals (1977), better known as The Creeper, which stars Hal Holbrook and Lawrence Dane in a film that is clearly influenced by John Boorman’s Deliverance (1971) but easily stands on its own as a strong piece of independent filmmaking.

Appearing in person at the Curtains screening was actress Lesleh Donaldson who played Christie Burns, the ice skater in the film.

'Rookie Blue' Season 4, Episode 8: Noelle and Frank's wedding plans go 'For Better, For Worse'
Rarely do things run smoothly for the "Rookie Blue" cops -- even their own nuptials.

Noelle (Melanie Nicholls-King) and Frank's (Lyriq Bent) wedding wasn't exactly like clockwork in Thursday's (Aug. 8) episode of the ABC drama, "For Better, For Worse." Even with the ceremony taking place that evening, much remained in flux, prompting Andy (Missy Peregrym) to try to take the organizational lead.

Meanwhile, claiming she was getting "lying hives," Chloe (Priscilla Faia) begged Dov (Gregory Smith) to tell Frank -- her godfather and their boss -- about their off-duty relationship. It wouldn't be an easy day for Chloe in another way; she was partnered with angry-as-usual Gail (Charlotte Sullivan), whom Chloe had informed about the crush that Gail's now-ex-boyfriend Nick (Peter Mooney) had on Andy.

Andy and Nick also were partners for the day, with Andy starting it by crooning along to Extreme's "More Than Words" -- the tune she...

Robert Fuest obituary
Director who blended sophistication and sickness in the horror film The Abominable Dr Phibes

With its mix of pop art, sophisticated humour, pulp science fiction and English eccentricity, the television series The Avengers was among the most influential and significant products of "swinging London" in the 1960s. Robert Fuest, who has died aged 84, cut his teeth on the series under the aegis of the writer-producer Brian Clemens, initially as a production designer when the show was produced "as live" in the studio in black and white and co-starred Honor Blackman with Patrick MacNee, then as director when the series had moved on to colour, film and Linda Thorson.

As designer and director, Fuest learned how to achieve style on a budget – making a great deal of the show's famously minimalist aesthetic – and he carried this over into his best-known works as a film director, the two Dr Phibes horror movies of the early 1970s,...

Barbican Film: 'The Avengers' 50th Anniversary evening
During an evening of rose-tinted nostalgia, London's Barbican last night celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of that most British of TV series, The Avengers. Whilst some will remember The New Avengers of the late 1970s, this special event was dedicated to the original episodes starring Honor Blackman (Catherine Gale), Diana Rigg (Emma Peel) and Linda Thorson (Tara King) alongside the king of 1960s cool, Patrick Macnee as John Steed.

Jane Royle obituary
TV and film make-up artist with a gift for applying prosthetics

The television and film make-up artist Jane Royle, who has died aged 78, was admired by fellow professionals for her all-round ability to bring a look to the screen that was as important as that contributed by the director of photography or production designer. She could go from ensuring Izabella Scorupco looked stunningly beautiful as a Bond girl in GoldenEye (1995) to making actors appear hideous, old, scarred, bruised, bearded or bald. Royle particularly enjoyed applying prosthetics – to which she referred as "the stickies".

For the 1979 Sherlock Holmes film Murder By Decree, she simulated the wrenched-out innards of prostitutes killed by Jack the Ripper. One of her most memorable transformations was the complete prosthetic makeover – wrinkled face, bulbous nose, pointy ears and flowing hair and whiskers – she gave Billy Barty for his cowardly dwarf character, Screwball, in the fantasy film Legend (1985).

Arianna Huffington's Quiet Partner
Amid all the publicity over the Huffington Post-aol sale last week, few have focused on the PR wizard who played a stealth role in its success. Lloyd Grove on the enigmatic Ken Lerer.

Pay attention to the man behind the curtain-even if he doesn't want you to.

Related story on The Daily Beast: Huffington Post Readers Revolt Against AOL

Branding and media-relations wizard Kenneth Lerer barely has a public profile. This is by design: He likes to operate under the radar. His rather boring Wikipedia entry is only 237 words long. That's an astounding achievement given that he has spent more than three decades at the white-hot center of corporate wheeling and dealing, playing pivotal roles, and making fortunes several times over, in the crisis PR business, the ultimately disastrous AOL-Time Warner merger-and now his latest coup, the jaw-dropping $315 million sale of The Huffington Post to AOL.

For the past six years Lerer,...

Garry Marshall
Film review: 'The Other Sister'
Garry Marshall
At first glance, "The Other Sister" would appear to be a TV movie with loftier ambitions.

Fortunately, looks can occasionally be deceiving. A romantic comedy about love among the intellectually challenged, this potential crowd-pleaser earns its big-screen stripes thanks to its energetic, highly capable cast and some zesty direction by Garry Marshall that undercuts the soapier aspects with liberal jabs of unexpected humor.

Speaking of challenged, Touchstone's marketing staff certainly has their work cut out for themselves given the picture's tricky subject matter. But if they succeed in getting initial audiences through the door, enthusiastic word-of-mouth could translate into some respectable returns.

In a comeback of sorts, Juliette Lewis gives one of the most grounded, accomplished performances of her young career as the spirited Carla Tate, a somewhat mentally challenged 24-year-old determined to emerge from under the overprotective wing of her controlling mother, Elizabeth (Diane Keaton).

Having overcome many of her previous problems during her years away at a Special Ed boarding school, Carla returns home to her family a capable young woman despite a pronounced speech impediment and the occasional emotional outburst.

Eager to assert her newfound confidence, Carla enrolls herself in a regular tech college much to the protests of Elizabeth, who doesn't want to see her get hurt. There, Carla meets Danny (Giovanni Ribisi), a similarly challenged young man.

Living in his own apartment but under the supportive, watchful eye of neighbor Ernie (Hector Elizondo), Danny falls in love with Carla, and her resulting feeling of unconditional acceptance goes even further to fan the flames in a battle of wills between herself and her mother.

Lewis is wonderful in the role, breathing life into a character who is alternately compassionate and humorously endearing. Her quest for and ultimate achievement of her independence is registered in a series of personal awakenings that are reflected across her face like warm rays of sunshine.

Ribisi, recently seen in "Saving Private Ryan" and coming up as a member of the big-screen "Mod Squad", is equally adept at never pandering to what could have been a cloying character. Keaton, meanwhile, does a finely balanced job in portraying a person whose stubborn hardness is betrayed by her own admitted insecurities about her perception as an effective mother.

Also good are Tom Skerritt as Lewis' understanding, former alcoholic father and Poppy Montgomery and Sarah Paulson as her supportive sisters. And Juliet Mills, in a nod toward her "Nanny and the Professor" days, puts in a welcome appearance as the equally sympathetic Winnie, the family nanny.

Marshall, who also co-wrote the script with longtime collaborator Bob Brunner, accomplishes the not-so-easy feat of averting much of the potential pathos by mixing some well-paced comedy into all the confrontation. Occasionally, some of the material's more virtuously squishy aspects poke through, but for the most part, things are disarmingly upbeat.

Among the technical attributes, cinematographer Dante Spinotti, who received an Oscar nomination for his work on "L.A. Confidential", keeps it fairly bright and simple here, as does Stephen J. Lineweaver's production design and Rachel Portman's syrup-lite score.

On the tunes' end, the Pretenders' performance of the Diane Warren-penned "Loving You Is All I Know" sounds like a winner.
