Kudos to the Criterion Collection for releasing Whit Stillman’s charming trio of young adult angst: Metropolitan (1990), Barcelona (1994), and The Last Days of Disco (1998). The bookend films have both been previously released by Criterion on DVD and Blu-ray, but now the company bows Barcelona to complete the trilogy. Available as both a stand-alone disc as well as part of a set of the three films, Barcelona features the luminous Mira Sorvino in an early role.
The trilogy of films that Mr. Stillman made as the beginning of his career and for which he is most well-known are interesting in that they depict groups of people who fall out of the scope of most of the general population and probably appeal to even less. That is actually a welcome relief. Metropolitan was shot in January and February in 1989 and released in August 1990 (a curious choice for a film...

Acclaimed as one of the great American indies of the 1990s, writer/director Stillman’s Metropolitan is a comedic chronicle of a middle-class young man’s (Edward Clements) romantic misadventures in New York City’s debutante society, where a chatty group of young upper-class Manhattanites are blithely passing through the gala debutante season. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, the movie co-stars Chris Eigman, Carolyn Farina and Taylor Nichols.

Well, I watched a lot more this week as I had a couple of nights where I just decided I was going to push work aside for a second and watch a few films I wanted to watch rather than had to watch. Below is the result of that decision as I saw four films I had never seen before.
Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983) Upon hearing the news Christopher Nolan, Michael Bay and Alfonso Cuaron were on Warner's shortlist to direct a new Twilight Zone movie I decided to watch the original 1983 movie, which I rented from [amazon asin="B000SZS3VU" text="Amazon's Instant Video service"]. I think I may have seen a couple of episodes of the television show a long, long time ago, but this was the first time I can remember ever watching anything "Twilight Zone" related and I can't say I was blown away, though the fourth segment, Nightmare at 20,000 feet, is excellent. Correct me if I'm wrong,...

If the title alone isn't enough to sell you on this film, then the poster and the cast of "A Good Old Fashioned Orgy" should do the trick.
Featuring the acting talents of Jason Sudeikis, Leslie Bibb, Lake Bell, Nick Kroll, Will Forte, and many more, the story revolves around a group of friends who decide to throw an end-of-summer bash to end all end-of-summer bashes. Yep, you guessed it, they decide to have a good old fashioned orgy.
MTV News recently caught up with the writing and directing team behind the film, Alex Gregory and Pete Huyck, to find out what separates "Orgy" from everything else and how to write and direct group sex scenes.
"What sets ours apart from those other R-rated movies, you have 'The Hangover,' which is a guy R-rated comedy and 'Bridesmaids' is a girl R-rated comedy, and we all liked the idea of a co-ed comedy,...

Everybody is coming back for Sex in the City 2 which will open Memorial Day weekend 2010. As of right now … Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda are in the Big Apple as filming is about to get underway.
Before we get to the details, where do you think the story can go from here? Will there be baby talk for Mr. Big and Carrie? Why is Smith coming back? And do any of these characters actually have to break up in the beginning of the film only to get back together again in the end?
Here’s the news release …

Director/Writer: Whit Stillman
Cinematographer: John Thomas
Starring: Chloë Sevigny, Kate Beckinsale
Studio/Run Time: Castle Rock Entertainment, 113 mins.
Whitewashed disco comedy as tasteful as a polyester suit
Near the end of this woefully ahistorical 1998 comedy about yuppies hooking up at an opulent disco, one guy rants: “Disco was too great, and too much fun to be gone forever! It’s got to come back someday. I just hope it will be in our own lifetimes.” Out of print for a decade, and recently restored by Criterion, the film follows two shallow roommates, Alice and Charlotte (Sevigny and Beckinsale), as they listlessly shake their groove things with other uptight professionals in the early ’80s. In Stillman’s envisioning of this seedy decade, New York was already like an episode of Friends: squeaky clean subways and back alleys; whitewashed, unfunny characters; totally bereft of the gay Latinos and African-Americans that made...

Best-selling author Dominick Dunne died in New York at age 83 Wednesday. People book reviewer Judith Newman remembers the highly admired writer.A great writer can take personal tragedy and make it into something meaningful and even beautiful to the rest of us. Nobody proved this point better than Dominick Dunne, who died of bladder cancer on Wednesday. A successful film producer in the '70s who flamed out in a haze of booze and coke, Dunne had pulled himself together and was casting about for another career when, in 1982, his life was again shattered: His daughter Dominique, an actress, was...

According to ShockTillYouDrop, MGM's forthcoming remake of 1982's Poltergeist has been scheduled to appear in theaters on November 24, 2010, the U.S. Thanksgiving weekend.
The new movie is directed by Vadim Perelman (House of Sand and Fog) and written by Juliet Snowden and Stiles White.
Casting has yet to be announced.
The original film was co-written by Steven Spielberg and directed by Tobe Hooper. It revolved around a young family being visited by ghosts in their home. At first the ghosts appear friendly, moving objects around the house to the amusement of everyone, but then they turn nasty and start to terrorize the family before finally kidnapping the youngest daughter.
Poltergeist was a box office success worldwide. The film grossed $76,606,280 in the United States, making it the 8th biggest release (regardless of genre) and highest grossing horror film of 1982.

Last week, when I interviewed Whit Stillman on the occasion of Metropolitan's premiere on Hulu, I asked him what movies he'd recently seen and enjoyed, and though he said that "seeing the trailers puts me off many more films than makes me want to see," he noted that he did enjoy Sex and the City, which was lensed by his own frequent cinematographer John Thomas. Then, this weekend, Stillman sent me an email: I spaced badly ...
