Tomorrow, "The Art of Star Wars: The High Republic (Volume One)" by Kristin Baver (with a foreword by Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy) hits newsstands. "The High Republic" was unique among Disney's "Star Wars" publishing goals in that they brought in artists like Ian McCaig to do a blue sky development phase with a whole writing team. It's not something that's been done before, and this book documents a lot of the iteration and thought behind the visuals we've been seeing across the program. It was a useful tool to unite the writers and comic book artists into a single vision as they told their stories. It's also served to create a cohesion in design for readers, allowing us to have a unified view of what we were supposed to imagine in a universe as concerned with canon and accuracy as the entirety of "Star Wars."

‘The Gulf.’
The Nine Network and New Zealand broadcaster MediaWorks Three have acquired The Gulf, a six-part thriller which follows the moral disintegration of a female detective as she investigates crimes on her home patch of Waiheke Island.
Kate Elliot, Ido Drent, Jeffrey Thomas, Pana Hema-Taylor, Mark Mitchinson and newcomer Timmie Cameron star in the German-New Zealand co-production which explores the notion that even good people are capable of committing a terrible crime.
Created and scripted by Lippy Pictures’ Donna Malane and Paula Boock, the plot follows Detective Jess Savage after she loses her memory in the car crash that killed her husband and vows to bring the killer to justice. Convinced that someone is trying to kill her because of something she uncovered in a recent case, she begins investigating herself, retracing her steps over the previous weeks.
As her colleagues become increasingly uncooperative her paranoia sets in while...

James Gunn found himself the target of an online firestorm when his homophobic posts were unearthed and passed around on social media. One of the key directors in Marvel’s stable, Gunn was quickly forced to apologize for his “poorly worded and offensive” remarks.
The year was 2012, and Gunn was not fired as the director of “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Last week, however, Gunn’s offensive old posts were again unearthed. Again he apologized. Gunn is far more established and powerful this time around, and yet, this time he was fired from “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.”
Times have changed. In the wake of the Weinstein scandal, dozens of men have been ousted for allegations of sexual misconduct. It was a long time coming, but when it came, it was sudden. Now the same urgency and zero-tolerance mentality are being applied to offensive statements as well as deeds.

It seems like every other year, Shailene Woodley gets a feature piece here on the site. Some of that may just be due to when her films opt to come out, but I think there’s more to it than that. Frankly, she’s just such an interesting and talented actress, one goes back to her works a lot. This week, she has a new movie opening in Adrift, which I saw last night and really puts her front and center, but in general, it feels like she’s the sort of talent that bears fruitful discussions. So, that’s what we’ll be doing once again. One of these days she’ll be an Oscar nominee. I still firmly believe in that. This time around, she stars in Adrift, as previously mentioned. It’s a survival drama mixed with a tale of true love. Stx Films describes it as...

Hollywood has had a fairly predictable approach to the combination of boat, sun, sea and starlet, and that is to emphasize skin over substance, and leave the derring-do to the men. But that equation has been getting reworked of late, and the endurance grit of women has edged to the forefront. There are, of course, the shark ordeals both real (“Soul Surfer”) and popcorn-flavored, the gender-equal action ethos of James Cameron, and Disney’s sumptuously empowering Polynesian girl adventure “Moana.”
But the one genre that’s eluded showcasing a strong woman is the lost-at-sea yarn, which has given us memorable adventures in this young century for Tom Hanks (“Castaway”), Robert Redford (“All Is Lost”), and an Indian boy paired with a digital tiger (“Life of Pi”), while largely avoiding stranding a female in open waters for an existentially punishing length.
Until “Adrift,” that is. The poster, which features Shailene Woodley...

"Come sail with me." Stx Entertainment has debuted the second (and labeled as "final") trailer for survival drama Adrift, based on the true story of a sailing couple who barely survive riding through a Category 5 hurricane. We posted the first trailer a few months back, and it looks like a worthwhile survival thriller. Shailene Woodley & Sam Claflin star as Tami Oldham & Richard Sharp, two free-spirits who fall in love and embark on a lengthy journey. The cast includes Jeffrey Thomas, Elizabeth Hawthorne, and Grace Palmer. The film tells of "a young couple's chance encounter" which "leads them first to love, and then on the adventure of a lifetime." With a damaged boat and Richard injured, Tami works to keep them both alive as they wait to be rescued, adrift in the Pacific Ocean. This really does look a bit better than you're likely expecting, more than just about surviving, as...

Given how easy it is to dramatize ghost encounters, the paranormal subgenre has become horror’s deepest mixed-bag of results. A good zombie movie requires flesh-rotting makeup, and slasher flicks demand artistically grotesque gore, but any average Joe or Jane can string together a few spiritual scares.
Slam some doors, shut some windows, make objects fly around a room – you know, that Paranormal Activity knock-off garbage – and finito! Just look at Jason Stutter’s The Dead Room. Costs are low because one rickety shack acts as the film’s single setting, and only three actors have to pretend something nasty is chasing them. Paranormal Activity made a cool profit doing the same, so why not The Dead Room?
Well, because it’s weightless, derivative, recycled genre boredom that makes even 75 minutes feel like a horror fan’s personal Hell.

‘The Hobbit 2′ weekend box office: Third 2013 movie to top domestic box office chart three consecutive weekends (photo: Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins in ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’) Two weekends ago, Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opened way below expectations in the United States and Canada; yet, The Hobbit 2 is hanging in there. Chiefly because Will Ferrell’s Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues underperformed on its domestic debut, The Hobbit 2 topped the North American box office last weekend. Chiefly because Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio’s collaboration The Wolf of Wall Street debuted with less than $10 million, The Hobbit 2 topped the North American Christmas box office two days ago. And chiefly because there’s no strong competition out there, The Hobbit 2 is expected to top the North American box office once again this weekend, December 27-29, 2013 — the last weekend of the year. Budgeted at approximately...

‘The Hobbit 2′ weekend box office: Far behind ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ in North America? (Photo: Orlando Bloom as Legolas in ‘The Hobbit 2′) First the (domestic) good news for distributor Warner Bros. and producing companies Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, New Line Cinema, and WingNut Films: The Hobbit 2 aka The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, the second movie in Peter Jackson’s $567 million-budgeted* The Hobbit trilogy, opened Friday, December 13, 2013, with an estimated $31.14 million from 3,903 North American venues, including $8.8 million from Thursday midnight shows. That likely means that the sequel to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will have earned more than $70 million in the U.S. and Canada by Sunday evening. Early Friday estimates indicated that The Hobbit 2 would debut below the $70 million mark at the domestic box office. Now, The Hobbit 2 bad news: A year ago, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opened with a — relatively speaking — disappointing $84.61 million at 4,045 theaters. Even if it reaches $75 million,...

‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ box office: Domestic midnight grosses far behind ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ opening last year The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, the second movie in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy, opened with a (relatively speaking) disappointing $8.8 million from Thursday midnight, December 12-13, 2013, shows in North America. For comparison’s sake: At about this time last year, and in a similar number of theaters, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey debuted with a considerably more impressive $13 million. (See also: “‘The Hobbit 2′ weekend box office” [early estimates]. Image: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.) As it stands, Peter Jackson’s two Hobbit movies have had the biggest domestic December midnight openings ever. That sounds good, but how high will The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug go this weekend? Well, at this stage it seems that the Hobbit sequel will trail its predecessor in North America. Some have been...

The Goblin King is being played by Barry Humphries in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and this toy gives us a good look at what the character is going to look like. When it was first announced that Humphries would be playing the Goblin King, Jackson said,
Barry Humphries will be portraying the Goblin King, in much the way Andy Serkis created Gollum... We're looking forward to seeing him invest the Goblin King with the delicate sensitivity and emotional depth this character deserves.
This is a great design for the character, and there's no doubt he will look even better up on the big screen in all his CG animated glory! What do you think of the of the design of the Goblin King?

With The Hobbit officially becoming a trilogy, it’s going to be even longer before we see Peter Jackson wrap up J.R.R. Tolkien‘s story, so get ready an even expanded marketing campaign. Today we’ve got more of that in the form of a slightly altered trailer for this December’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. In order to play before the PG-rated Brave earlier this summer, WB had to cut a new trailer removing the few scenes of Gandalf lighting up his pipe, one that ended up getting classified as G-rated.
It’s now made its way online and as expected takes almost identical form to the first trailer, except for three differences, as pointed out by The One Ring, here are the three new scenes present in this edit: Bilbo’s reaction to Gandalf’s arrival (0:23), Bilbo hiding behind a tree in Mirkwood (1:57) and Gandalf,...

Oh, happy day! Ever since word emerged from Comic-Con 2012 in San Diego earlier this month that Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit may become a trilogy of films, we’ve been holding our breath in hope. With the wealth of material in The Hobbit and Tolkien’s appendices in The Lord of the Rings, it’s definitely easy to see how The Hobbit could become three films.
Peter Jackson has posted on Facebook confirmation that The Hobbit will indeed become a trilogy of films. Check out his statement to fans below along with the official press release from the studio:

Last week we reported that Peter Jackson was in discussions with New Line Cinema to turn his two part Hobbit series into a trilogy. Well, without further ado, I’ll leave it to Peter Jackson, via his Facebook, for the announcement:
It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look at the film you have made. Recently Fran, Phil and I did just this when we watched for the first time an early cut of the first movie – and a large chunk of the second. We were really pleased with the way the story was coming together, in particular, the strength of the characters and the cast who have brought them to life. All of which gave rise to a simple question: do we take this chance to tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as the filmmakers,...

With production on both Hobbit films having come to an end — or did it?! — Peter Jackson has, wisely, made his latest video blog a chronicle of the final days behind those big 3D Red cameras. This piece was shown to members of the Comic-Con audience last Saturday, but don’t think this is all regurgitation (great regurgitation though it would already be); there’s also a bit of the director and his main cast in San Diego, with some “from the panel” footage being provided as his talk was being given.
Fans of Tolkien‘s book and The Lord of the Rings will undoubtedly get some real pleasure from all the little bits — be it sets, the surprise appearance of a few actors, about two seconds of complete footage, and the hints of some other big things. It’s all the better that this, like every prior video blog, doesn...
