Deaf President Now! review – passion and energy in stirring record of student protest
Margaret Thatcher
Documentary follows the 1988 anti-audism revolt in the US after the world’s first deaf university appointed a hearing person to head it

‘It’s awfully difficult to talk above this loud noise,” says the chair of the board of trustees at a liberal arts university. It’s the late 1980s, protesting students have shut down the campus and now, midway through a tense meeting, someone has set off the fire alarm. But here’s the thing, Gallaudet University in Washington DC is the world’s first deaf university. The students can have a conversation just fine with the alarms blaring – in sign language. But trustee chair Jane Bassett Spilman does not sign. In fact, she appears to be completely ignorant about deaf culture – and, dressed like a Margaret Thatcher lookalike, all handbags and helmet hair, she is the easy-to-loathe villain of this fascinating documentary.

Co-directed by actor and deaf activist Nyle Dimarco with Davis Guggenheim,...

Review: Bruce Robinson’s ‘How to Get Ahead in Advertising’ on Criterion Blu-ray
Image
In Bruce Robinson’s debut feature, Withnail and I, the permanent scowl of Richard E. Grant’s character speaks to his anger at a world that fails to acknowledge his genius, his features made more gaunt and lifeless by alcoholism. The actor channels much of the same body language and aura as Withnail in Robinson’s 1987 sophomore feature, How to Get Ahead in Advertising, to play advertising executive Denis Bagley, though here the shambolic sense of grievance is replaced by mercenary superiority.

In the film’s opening scene, Bagley presides over a meeting where he exalts a closed ecosystem of advertising, bragging through a dagger smile that they can sell junk food to the masses and advance body-image standards to guilt those same consumers into buying fad-diet products. Bagley sees everyone as lemmings whose hypocrisies are made to be exploited, and to the point that he even ruins dinner parties with friends,...

How May the 4th Became Known as Star Wars Day and How It’s Being Celebrated
Image
It didn’t begin a long time ago or in a galaxy far far away, but every May 4 it feels like images, memes and promotional deals involving Star Wars have an inescapable gravity.

May 4 — or May the 4th, as fans say — has evolved over the years into Star Wars Day, an informal holiday celebrating the space epic and its surrounding franchise.

What is Star Wars Day?

Star Wars Day was created by fans as a sly nod to one of the films’ most popular catchphrases, “May the force be with you.” Get it? Good, now May the 4th be with you, too.

It’s not an official holiday but has become so well-known that even former President Joe Biden marked it last year when Star Wars actor Mark Hamill dropped by the White House a day beforehand. This year, the Trump administration marked the occasion with a Star Wars-themed meme.

The White House Posts AI-Generated Image of Trump as a Buff Jedi: ‘Happy May the 4th to You All’

The official White House X and Instagram accounts on Sunday posted an AI-generated image of Donald Trump as a beefed-up Jedi in celebration of “Star Wars” day.

The post read, “Happy May the 4th to all, including the Radical Left Lunatics who are fighting so hard to bring Sith Lords, Murderers, Drug Lords, Dangerous Prisoners, & well known Ms-13 Gang Members, back into our Galaxy. You’re not the Rebellion—you’re the Empire. May the 4th be with you.”

The White House Inadvertently Calls Donald Trump A Sith
Image
Yes, the White House has just inadvertently called Donald Trump a Sith in its own surreal celebration of Star Wars Day. Star Wars has always been political; what's more, there's always been a political dimension to Star Wars Day, the franchise's annual celebration. "May the Fourth be with you" was first invoked by British newspapers when Conservative leader Margaret Thatcher won a General Election on that day in 1979.

The White House has just taken this one step further, though, issuing a tweet in honor of Star Wars Day that seems to have been trying to present Donald Trump as a Jedi hero. There's just one problem; the AI-generated image features a red lightsaber blade, the color of Sith and dark Jedi. Far from calling Trump a Jedi, the White House has just called him a Sith.

Happy May the 4th to all, including the Radical Left Lunatics who are fighting...

Kneecap Concerts Canceled in Germany Following Pro-Palestine Messaging at Coachella
Image
Northern Irish rap trio Kneecap continue to face backlash for their pro-Palestine, anti-Israel statements made at Coachella 2025, resulting in a total of five concerts in Germany being canceled as of April 30th. At the same time, they’ve garnered support from several UK acts, including Massive Attack and artists signed to Kneecap’s label, Heavenly Recordings.

Last week, the group’s June appearances at Hurricane Festival and Southside Festival were pulled, reportedly without explanation. While Kneecap initially directed fans to scheduled headlining shows in Hamburg, Berlin, and Cologne after confirming the festival cancellations, those concerts have now also been canceled.

The cancellations may be linked to Germany’s strict hate speech laws. As The Hollywood Reporter points out, the pro-Palestinian slogan “From the river to the sea” has been interpreted by some German courts as anti-Israel hate speech and thus deemed a criminal offense in some states,...

David Tennant Criticizes Jk Rowling for 'Demonizing' the Trans Community: 'Just Let People Be'

David Tennant is urging J.K. Rowling to curb her anti-trans comments.

The 55-year-old actor, who played Barty Crouch Jr. in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, voiced his opinion about J.K. openly celebrating the U.K.’s Supreme Court ruling that trans women should not be recognized as women under the Equality Act.

“When I was a teenager, there was this thing that Margaret Thatcher’s government introduced called section 28, which was about stopping the promotion of homosexuality in school, which was a weird umbrella term, which was basically saying it was illegal to talk about being gay in school, or to suggest that that might be a normal way of behaving,” he said while on a recent episode of The Assembly, per The Guardian.

Kneecap Say They’ve Faced “Coordinated Smear Campaign” Since Coachella
Image
Irish rap trio Kneecap have faced backlash from parts of the Jewish community and celebrities like Sharon Osbourne following their strong pro-Palestine, anti-Israel messaging during both weekends of Coachella. Now, the group has released a statement alleging that they’ve faced a “smear campaign” for their efforts.

“Since our statements at Coachella — exposing the ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people — we have faced a coordinated smear campaign,” their statement reads. “For over a year, we have used our shows to call out the British and Irish governments’ complicity in war crimes.”

Kneecap added that they are already taking action against these “malicious efforts,” which they state are “largely emanating from the US” and based on “deliberate distortions and falsehoods.”

The statement continues:

“The reason Kneecap is being targeted is simple — we are telling the truth, and our audience is growing. Those attacking us want to silence criticism of a mass slaughter.

Coachella “Blindsided” by Kneecap’s Anti-Israel Message: Report
Image
During the first weekend of Coachella 2025, Irish rap trio Kneecap led “Free Palestine” and anti-Margaret Thatcher chants that were cut from the official livestream. On Friday, April 18th, the group returned for weekend two and doubled down by displaying, “Fuck Israel, free Palestine” on the screens behind them.

Following criticism from Jewish groups directed at festival organizer Goldenvoice for the band’s actions, The Hollywood Reporter has published a report claiming CEO Paul Tollett was “blindsided” by the incident.

It’s worth noting that sets at the Sonora tent were not livestreamed via Coachella’s official channels during weekend two, but Kneecap brought out streamer Hasan Piker to broadcast their protest on Twitch. “Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people,” another message read on their stage screens. “It is being enabled by the US government who arm and fund Israel despite their war crimes.

Kneecap Call for a Free Palestine During Uncensored Coachella Set

At the time, the band assured “it’ll be sorted” in time for their next set. Kneecap Sparks Backlash With Israel Protest During Coachella Set: “F— Israel, Free Palestine”
Image
Irish hip-hop trio Kneecap made quite the impression with their Coachella debut, using their set to protest the Israel-Hamas War‘s devastating impact on Palestine.

The group has sparked backlash after their Weekend 2 performance on Friday at the Sonora stage, during which they projected “fuck Israel,” “free Palestine” and other messages of protest against US support of the Israel-Hamas war.

“Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people. It is being enabled by the US government who arm and fund Israel despite their war crimes,” the text read in photos shared on X by the group. “Fuck Israel. Free Palestine.”

After Coachella’s YouTube Live stream of their set was reportedly cut when they started an anti-Margaret Thatcher chant, the band wrote on X, “Not the only thing that was cut – our messaging on the US-backed genocide in Gaza somehow never appeared on screens either. Back next Friday Coachella and it’ll be sorted.

Irish Band Kneecap Displays Anti-Israel Messages During Coachella Weekend 2 Set ‘Blindsiding’ Festival Organizers
Image
Irish hip-hop group Kneecap drew headlines during their weekend two performance at Coachella 2025, but not for the reasons a buzzing band typically claims. The group performed in the Sonora tent in front of large screens that projected references to genocide, denouncements of Israel and calls to “free Palestine.” Their set on April 18 also condemned the U.S. for its military support of Israel.

While the Coachella music festival is no stranger to political statements made onstage, this call to “Fuck Israel” has incensed Jewish groups who are calling out the fest’s promoter Goldenvoice (a subsidiary of Aeg) for its part in booking the band, which has been known to espouse the ideology of terrorist groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah. Kneecap followed up its Coachella set on social media with numerous video posts about their “uncensored messaging” and a request for young Americans to send the clips to President Trump,...

Doctor Who Star Ncuti Gatwa Explains Why New Episode Tackles Racism
Image
Doctor Who stars Ncuti Gatwa and Varada Sethu have addressed the show tackling themes of racism in its latest episode, "Lux." The second episode of season 2 featured The Doctor (Gatwa) and companion Belinda Chandra ( Sethu) traveling to 1950s Miami.

While "Lux" is a largely light-hearted episode pitting The Doctor and his companion against evil cartoon character Mr. Ring-a-Ding, there are moments that address the genuine history of the era that The Doctor and Gatwa found themselves in. In one scene, The Doctor revealed to Belinda that they were breaking the law simply by sitting in a segregated diner because both are people of color.

Doctor Who Tackles Racism in Latest Episode "Lux"

Speaking on Doctor Who Unleashed, Sethu said it was important for the show to acknowledge the harsh realities of the time period The Doctor and Belinda were visiting.

"I said, 'Oh we're in the 1950s. It's really fun!

The Best Cannibalism Film of All Time Is Hard to Find
Image
Cannibalism is one of the most taboo plot devices that a movie (or any work of fiction) can possibly feature. It's no surprise, then, that many films which feature cannibalism in some capacity fall into the horror genre, such as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Cannibal Holocaust (1980), and The Silence of the Lambs (1991). Nevertheless, many filmmakers have used cannibalism for more than just shock value, with recent films like Raw (2016), Bones and All (2022), and Society of the Snow (2023) even humanizing people who engage in cannibalism.

And then there's Peter Greenaway'sThe Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989). While the film doesn't feature any cannibalism until its disturbing ending, it is unique in that it features cannibalism in a rather heroic manner. This ending, combined with the film's expressionistic visual style and gruesome violence, has led to a multitude of interpretations regarding the film's themes, including as a political allegory and as a coming-of-age story.

‘Documentary Now!’ at 10: Bill Hader, Fred Armisen and Seth Meyers Pick Their Favorite Episodes of the Delightfully Niche Comedy
Image
Ten years ago, Dame Helen Mirren appeared on the IFC channel to introduce the landmark 50th season of “Documentary Now!” With nary a wink, she threw to a “classic” documentary film called “Sandy Passage,” which begins with the shaky title cards you’d expect from a 1970s documentary touting tiny production shingles that made the film possible. For all intents and purposes, an unaware viewer may have thought they had stumbled upon an esteemed, long-running TV show that highlights old documentaries.

Then Bill Hader and Fred Armisen showed up.

“What a glorious time Peak TV was,” co-creator and writer Seth Meyers told TheWrap ahead of the show’s 10th anniversary this August and on the eve of a new Blu-ray release that packages all four seasons in a complete collection.

The brainchild of creators Hader, Armisen, Meyers and Rhys Thomas, the central conceit of “Documentary Now!” was that each episode...

Keanu Reeves’ Most Racist Role in a Movie Starring Chris Evans Was Almost Directed by David Fincher but Brad Pitt Stopped That
Image
There is a lot that goes into making a movie and sometimes things do not work out the way you want them to. Take Street Kings as an example. The 2008 action thriller starring Keanu Reeves and Chris Evans was in the making since the late 1990s and was even set for a 2005 release once. However, fate had different plans for the film. And while David Ayer turned out to be a good choice for Street Kings, the Suicide Squad filmmaker was not the studio’s first choice by a long shot.

In fact, his name was fourth on the list with none other than David Fincher sitting on the top. Fortunately for David Ayer, the top choice decided to go with another project leaving the door open for an array of possibilities.

Razzie Awards: ‘Madame Web’ Wins Worst Picture, Francis Ford Coppola Accepts for Directing and Speaks Out Against an ‘Industry So Terrified of Risk’
Image
The Oscars will honor the best movie of the year this Sunday, but the infamous Razzie Awards have crowned the “worst” of 2024’s films.

Sony’s much-derided superhero film “Madame Web” has the (dis)honor of winning three Razzies, including worst picture, actress for Dakota Johnson and screenplay. “Joker: Folie à Deux,” another divisive superhero entry,” led with seven nominations and took home screen combo for Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga and prequel, remake, rip-off or sequel.

Francis Ford Coppola won for directing his big-budget epic “Megalopolis,” and star Jon Voight won supporting actor for the film — shared with his turns in “Reagan,” “Shadow Land” and “Strangers.” Coppola’s “Megalopolis” received six nominations, which was tied for second-most nods with “Madame Web,” “Borderlands” and “Reagan.”

The famed filmmaker responded to his Razzies on Instagram, saying “box office is only about money, and like war, stupidity and politics has no true place in our future.

Razzie Awards: Madame Web snags Worst Picture while Francis Ford Coppola basks in the “honor” of his many nominations
Image
The 45th Razzie Awards results are in. Sony’s Madame Web is the clear winner/loser of this year’s dragging of cinematic mediocrity with three wins, including Worst Picture, Worst Actress for Dakota Johnson, and Worst Screenplay. The Razzie results arrive two days before Oscar Sunday when films that some consider the best of the best have their chance to shine.

Madame Web taking the top prize is unsurprising given the movie’s abysmal quality. It was my worst film of 2024 and a Golden Schmoe nominee for worst movie of 2024, only to be beaten by Todd Phillips’s Joker: Folie a Deux. Dakota Johnson hardly tried to defend the film during its PR tour, saying she “probably will never make anything like it again.” To be fair, she enjoyed working with her castmates, who, despite circumstances, gave Madame Web the old college try, but the film turned into something...

Razzie Award Winners 2025: Madame Web And Joker: Folie À Deux Walk Away With The Top "Prizes"
Image
The Academy Awards take place on Sunday evening and, as has become the tradition, the full list of "winners" from the 2025 Razzie Awards has just been unveiled.

Madame Web took three wins for "Worst Picture," "Worst Screenplay," and an arguably well-deserved "Worst Actress" for lead star Dakota Johnson. It wasn't the only comic book adaptation to walk away with a prize, though, as Joker: Folie à Deux nabbed "Worst Sequel" and "Worst Screen Combo" for Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga.

The vast majority of celebrities and filmmakers ignore the Razzies, while few interviewers have the nerve - and understandably so - to ask celebrities about their "wins."

However, Francis Ford Coppola, who earned "Worst Director" for his critically panned Megalopolis, issued a scathing retort on social media today.

"I am thrilled to accept the Razzie award in so many important categories for Megalopolis, and for the distinctive honor of being nominated as the worst director,...

2025's Razzie Award Winners Revealed, Francis Ford Coppola Celebrates 'Winning' Worst Director
Image
The winners have just been announced for this year's Golden Raspberry Awards, also known as the "Razzies." They include a big "win" garnered for Francis Ford Coppola, but the famed director had a good sense of humor about the acknowledgment.

Per THR, the full list of Razzie winners was unveiled on Friday, just ahead of this year's Academy Awards ceremony. The annual nominations acknowledge the "worst" movies, filmmakers, and performances from the prior year, and there was no shortage of comic book adaptations up for big honors this year. However, when it came to Worst Director, Francis Ford Coppola got the win for his polarizing, big-budget feature Megalopolis. Taking to Instagram, Coppola commented on the revelation, noting how he nevertheless remains proud of the film, along with himself for taking some risks outside the standard Hollywood movie formula.

‘The X-Files’ stars David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson nearly ruin their SAG Awards reunion: ‘Let’s get out of here as soon as we can’

This reunion was ... out there.

On Sunday, The X-Files stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reunited at the 2025 Screen Actors Guild Awards. And they nearly ruined their moment in the spotlight when they opened up the winner's envelope for the Best Drama Ensemble category before ever announcing the nominees.

"Ensemble," Duchovny began after stepping out on stage. "I think that's a French word that means, 'Thank God I only have to work three days a week.' It's great to see you, Gillian. You look ..."

Anderson finished his sentence: "Younger than you last saw me when we shot 218 episodes?"

Duchovny and Anderson talked about "what makes great drama," and then answered at different times, "Timing" and "Chemistry," respectively.

When the audience only gave them a mild chuckle, Anderson shouted, "We still got it! Hilarious! We did that so well."

And Duchovny added, "Let's get out of here as soon as we can.

Bryan Fuller is the co-creator of Star Trek: Discovery and originally in charge of the casting. As I've previously written, he wanted Laurence Fishburne to play a Klingon on ther series and had some other differences in mind, too, like Paul Stamets [Anthony Rapp] being an Andorian.

Another actor he was reportedly in talks with to play a Starfleet captain was Gillian Anderson, better known as Dana Scully from The X-Files. [via Screenrant] An Emmy-Award winner, Anderson also portrayed Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier, Hannibal's psychotherapist on Hannibal, a series that was developed by Fuller. It seems he had an idea to bring most of the cast of Hannibal aboard Discovery.

Honestly, though, having Anderson as a captain isn't a bad idea at all. She plays the perfect authoritative figure [see her role on The Crown as Margaret Thatcher] and, after having spent time on The X-Files which ran for eleven seasons,...

Dalgliesh Season 3 Review: Atmospheric But Slow-Paced Drama
Image
Adam Dalgliesh, a British detective, demonstrates a distinctive approach to solving crimes through his empathetic, reflective methods. His investigative style diverges from traditional detective narratives, emphasizing a more compassionate and introspective technique of uncovering truth.

Bertie Carvel presents Dalgliesh with remarkable subtlety and precision. His performance reveals a reserved character who maintains emotional composure following personal loss. Carvel depicts a controlled professional, skillfully balancing observational acuity with measured emotional responses. His interactions with Dr. Lavenham, though concise, reveal nuanced interpersonal dynamics.

The series struggles to expand Dalgliesh’s character development. The detective’s emotional journey remains relatively unchanged, with minimal character progression. Brief moments, such as his interaction with Dr. Lavenham, hint at potential depth but fail to fully explore his internal landscape. This portrayal reflects broader storytelling patterns in crime drama, where male protagonists often remain emotionally constrained.

Channel 4 Confirms ‘A Woman Of Substance’ Remake On Splashy TV Drama Slate Featuring ‘The Rachel Incident’, ‘Undeclared War’ Season 2 & Daisy Haggard’s Latest
Image
Channel 4 has given the greenlight to a remake of what remains its most-watched drama of all time, A Woman Of Substance.

The network has confirmed reports a new version of the show was in the works several weeks after the death of Barbara Taylor Bradford, who wrote the original novel. The Buccaneers scribes Katherine Jakeways and Roanne Bardsley are penning A Woman of Substance, which follows the rags-to-riches tale of Emma Harte, an impoverished, ambitious maid in Yorkshire who takes a dizzying climb to become the world’s richest woman, gazing down on her sprawling empire from a luxury New York penthouse. Banijay-backed The Forge is producing the new version and ex-Channel 4 drama boss Beth Willis is EP.

Starring Jenny Seagrove, A Woman of Substance aired 40 years ago and remains Channel 4’s most-watched drama of all time with a whopping 14M viewers, figures that rarely get topped today. Taylor Bradford...

Disgraced BBC Presenter Jimmy Savile’s Home Damaged By Fire
Image
The Scottish home of notorious British TV and radio personality has been damaged by fire.

BBC News reports that emergency services attended a blaze Saturday evening at the cottage in the picturesque area of Glen Coe, north of Glasgow in the west of Scotland.

Police Scotland said: “Emergency services attended and the fire was extinguished by Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

“Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”

Savile, who died in 2011, owned the cottage for over a decade – it has been repeatedly vandalised since his crimes of rape, sexual assault and paedophilia came to light following his death.

The disgraced presenter was one of the UK’s most familiar public figures. Besides his long career in radio and TV, he raised millions for charity and befriended both members of the royal family and senior politicians. At one point in the 1980s, he served as a friendly liaison between...

Ben Affleck to Replace Matt Damon in Netflix Thriller ‘Animals,’ Gillian Anderson Joins Cast
Image
Ben Affleck is set to star in his upcoming Netflix thriller “Animals,” which he’s also directing. His longtime friend Matt Damon was originally slated to lead the film but had to depart due to scheduling conflicts with Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic “The Odyssey.”

“Animals” is aiming to begin production in Los Angeles this April, according to Deadline, who first reported the casting shakeup. Meanwhile, “The Odyssey” is expected to commence shooting in various global locations later in February.

Billy Ray, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of “Captain Phillips,” “The Hunger Games” and AMC Theatres’ iconic Nicole Kidman ad, is penning the screenplay with Connor McIntyre. The crime thriller reportedly follows a mayoral candidate whose child is kidnapped.

Though Damon won’t appear in “Animals,” he’s remaining on the project as a producer with Affleck through their company Artists Equity, along with executive Dani Bernfeld. Additional producers are Brad Weston and Collin Creighton of MakeReady,...

Ben Affleck, Gillian Anderson to Star in Crime Thriller ‘Animals’ for Netflix
Image
Ben Affleck’s crime thriller Animals is coming back together, this time with a new star very familiar to the filmmaker. Himself.

Matt Damon was originally on board to star in Animals, with Affleck in the director’s chair, when Netflix and Artists Equity were producing the movie a year ago. The project fell apart due to script issues, but those have since been resolved. In the meantime, however, Damon went on to sign on to star in a small movie titled The Odyssey that is being directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Christopher Nolan. Odyssey is due to begin principal photography later this month and shoot in locales around the world.

The project has been revived with Affleck still in the director’s chair. But he will now star in it as well. Gillian Anderson, the X-Files star who in recent years appeared as Margaret Thatcher in Netflix’s The Crown,...

45th Razzies Nominations Are In, 2024 Was a Bad Year For Superhero Movies
Image
The 45th Golden Raspberry Awards (Razzies) will be held on March 1, 2025, to recognize the worst films of 2024. The nominees were originally set to be announced on January 16, but due to wildfires in Southern California, the announcement was delayed several times, eventually being revealed on January 21.

The nominees were chosen by 1,202 members of the Golden Raspberry Foundation, including movie fans, critics, and journalists. This year, many comic book adaptations received nominations, such as ‘The Crow,’ ‘Madame Web,’ ‘Joker: Folie à Deux,’ and ‘Kraven the Hunter.’

Several well-known actors, including Ariana DeBose, Cate Blanchett, and Joaquin Phoenix, were also mentioned, with Jon Voight getting a nod for his roles in four films. 2024 was really bad for superhero adaptations considering that the movies received eighteen nominations overall.

The Razzies Nominate Joker, Madame Web, Megalopolis as Worst Movies of 2024
Image
There are few awards shows more mean-spirited than the Razzie Awards, which each year join the awards season circus to ridicule the previous year’s most notable flops. 2024 gave the Razzies plenty of punching bags, as Joker: Folie a Deux, Megalopolis, and Madame Web were among the nominees for Worst Picture.

The other films rounding out the five Worst Picture nominees were video game adaptation Borderlands and Dennis Quaid vanity project/biopic Reagan. All five movies were also well-represented in additional categories including Worst Actor, Worst Actress and Worst Screen Combo.

Thanks to the brave heroes who vote for the Razzies, Jack Black received two separate nominations — one for Worst Actor after playing Satan in the Paramount+ original film Dear Santa, and one for Worst Supporting Actor as the voice of Claptrap in Borderlands. While the Netflix comedy Unfrosted didn’t make the cut for Worst Film, Jerry Seinfeld...

Joker: Folie À Deux And Madame Web Sweep This Year's Razzie Award Nominations
Image
As this year's awards season gets underway, Hollywood prepares to celebrate the very best - and worst - that 2024 had to offer.

The Academy Award nominations were recently delayed due to the California wildfires, but we do have the nominations for the Golden Raspberry Awards, and several superhero/comic book-based movies were "honored" in a number of categories.

Not too surprisingly, Warner Bros.' Joker sequel picked up the most nominations, with stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga up for Worst Actor, Todd Phillips for Worst Director, and more. Sony Pictures' Madame Web was a close second with noms in six categories, tied with Megalopolis and Reagan.

Lionsgate's ill-fated The Crow reboot picked up two.

Nominees were chosen were via emailed ballots to 1,202 Razzie members from 49 States and about two dozen foreign countries who chose five top contenders in each of nine categories.

The Razzies began back in 1981, and...

Razzies 2025: ‘Joker 2’ Leads With Seven Noms, Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga Up for Worst Actors; ‘Madame Web,’ ‘Megalopolis,’ ‘Reagan’ at Six Nods
Image
This year’s Academy Award nominations are set to be announced Thursday, after being delayed due to the devastating Los Angeles fires. As such, the annual Golden Raspberry Awards got to get ahead of the Oscars on Tuesday with their own crop of nominees, highlighting what its members believe to be the worst in film for 2024. “Joker: Folie à Deux” leads the field with seven nominations, while “Madame Web,” “Megalopolis,” “Borderlands” and “Reagan” are close behind with six nods apiece.

For “Joker: Folie à Deux,” the musical sequel to Todd Phillips’ Oscar-nominated DC Comics crime film “Joker,” landed nods in worst picture, director, screenplay and prequel, remake, rip-off or sequel. Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix are both up for worst actress and worst actor, respectively, as well as worst screen combo. The “Joker” sequel was poorly reviewed out of its premiere at the Venice Film Festival and wound up a box office bomb,...

Golden Razzie Awards: Joker 2, Borderlands, Madame Web, Megalopolis, and Reagan all tie for the most nominations at this year’s event
Image
All the stars are here! It’s that magical time of year when the biggest bombs in Hollywood gather to celebrate mediocrity at the Razzie Awards! This year’s presentation of The Golden Razzies finds multiple flops joining hands in the battle to escape accolades as the worst movies and performances of the year, including Joker: Folie a Deux, Madame Web, Megalopolis, Borderlands, and Reagan.

Borderlands, Megalopolis, Madame Web, Joker: Folie a Deux, and Reagan earned six nominations apiece, forming a Megazord of misguided executions on the silver screen. Not far behind are Jerry Seinfeld’s Unfrosted and The Crow swooping in with four nominations and two nominations, respectively. Aw, c’mon! The Crow wasn’t that bad! It was a tad uninspired, but at least they didn’t try to remake the original full-stop. Who’s with me? Bueller? Bueller? Oh, well.

Among the actors who could add a...

Razzie Nominations: ‘Joker’ Sequel, ‘Megalopolis’ & ‘Madame Web’ Among Biggest Losers
Image
It’s that time of year again, when Hollywood celebrates the year’s best motion pictures and performances and such. It’s also when the Razzie Awards turns all that on its ear.

In the running for Worst Picture at the 45th Golden Raspberry Awards — watch a video about them above — are vidgame adaptation Borderlands, musical sequel Joker: Folie à Deux, Marvel’s Madame Web, Freancis Ford Coppola’s passion project Megalopolis and presidential biopic Reagan.

Not coincidentally, all five are tied with six Razzie noms apiece. Those films’ helmers also are up for the Director “prize,” except for Reagan‘s Sean McNamara; Jerry Seinfeld took that fifth slot for his Pop Tarts comedy Unfrosted. The erstwhile sitcom king also is up for Worst Actor.

From the “How the Mighty Have Fallen” Department, among the men and women nominated for acting Razzies are Academy winners Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga...

Joker: Folie à Deux leads the Razzie Awards noms, which recognize the worst movies and performances of the year, with a total of seven mentions.

Borderlands, Madame Web, Megalopolis and Reagan followed with six noms apiece, it was announced Tuesday. Unfrosted landed with four noms, while The Crow nabbed two noms.

Among the actors receiving mentions were Joaquin Phoenix, Cate Blanchett, Lady Gaga and Jon Voight, one of President Donald Trump’s newly appointed “Ambassadors to Hollywood,” who was nominated for his performances in a “near record” four films in one year.

Organizers joked that the worst picture nominees will compete for a “$4.97 gold spray-painted” statuette and shared their thoughts on each of the films in contention (see below).

Nominees were chosen via emailed ballots to 1,202 Razzie members (movie buffs, film critics and journalists) from 49 states and about two dozen foreign countries who chose five top contenders in each of nine categories.

Kathy Bates Recalls Slamming Shots of Vodka With Meryl Streep After Losing an Oscar to Catherine Zeta-Jones
Image
Kathy Bates recently told a relatable story to Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family) on his Dinner's On Me podcast (via TheWrap) when both she and fellow Oscar winner Meryl Streep lost the Best Supporting Actress Oscar to Catherine Zeta-Jones in 2003: They drowned their sorrows with vodka at the bar.

“It was a very Joan Crawford-Bette Davis moment. She slammed her evening bag down on the bar and said, ‘I’m having a vodka, straight, neat,’ and I slammed my evening bag down, I said, ‘I’m having what she’s having,’ and we tossed it. It was a moment.”

Zeta-Jones won the Oscar for Chicago, playing Velma Kelly. The film also won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Sound, Best Art Direction, and Best Film Editing. Meanwhile, Bates was nominated for her role as Roberta Hertzel in About Schmidt, a film that features Jack Nicholson playing completely against type. Streep...

The Bibi Files Review: A Critical Look at Israeli Governance
Image
The Bibi Files, directed by Alexis Bloom, is an engrossing documentary that goes beyond just a political report. It turns Benjamin Netanyahu’s story into a compelling narrative that questions conventional narrative. The film starts with a close interrogation scene, drawing viewers into the serious issue of political corruption. This decision conveys a sense of urgency and reflects today’s political chaos.

Bloom’s clear editing style matches quick news updates, using old footage and current interviews to create a feeling of being right in the moment. A generation tired of political theater resonates with this nonlinear approach, encouraging viewers to create a complicated narrative.

The documentary focuses on Netanyahu as a divided character, showing traits of both strength and corruption. It serves as a cultural artifact that reflects societal concerns and the moral implications of leadership. The Bibi Files, which stands as a testament to the power of film...

Image
Lockerbie: A Search for Truth centers on grieving father Dr. Jim Swire’s quest to find justice for his daughter Flora, who died in the infamous Lockerbie bombing on 21st December, 1988. While the initial episodes of the show show a determined Jim who would go any distance to uncover the truth about the incident, the later episodes raise the big question: Was Abdelbaset al-Megrahi (Baset in short), the only person who was convicted for the bombing, actually guilty or not? Jim Swire certainly believes he was not, and the show seems to say the same thing too. In this article, we’re going to discuss Peacock’s Lockerbie and its ending. It is, of course, based on a true story, but we’re only going to talk about what we see on screen.

Spoilers Ahead
