Some of the unsung heroes of Apple TV+’s hit series Severance — casting director Rachel Tenner, production designer Jeremy Hindle and composer Theodore Shapiro — dug into the behind-the-scenes work that goes into building out the world of Lumon Industries during a panel at Deadline’s Contenders Television.
Telling the story of a team of office workers whose memories have been surgically divided between their work and personal lives, these creatives drew inspiration from some interesting places, including John Deere’s 1950s office buildings.
“A tractor company has the most typical office, probably in America,” Hindle said during the conversation, explaining there’d been little guidance in the script as far as what the office should look like. Since the show was only budgeted for one location in the first season, Hindle says he knew it needed to be “interesting.”

The trailer for A Minecraft Movie showcases the video game adaptation to be a family-friendly adventure, but with Jack Black and Jason Momoa in the cast, it is surely set to lean the film into some light irreverent humor. The ratings bulletin from the MPA has recently announced that A Minecraft Movie will be an edgier family film with a PG rating for violence/action, language, suggestive/rude humor and some scary images.
From Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures and starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black, A Minecraft Movie, directed by Jared Hess, is the first-ever big-screen, live-action adaptation of Minecraft, the best-selling video game of all time. The film also stars Emma Myers (Wednesday), Oscar nominee Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Sebastian Eugene Hansen, with Jennifer Coolidge.

“Griselda” star Juliana Aidén Martinez played Miami Detective June Hawkins in the Netflix series, but she joins “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” Thursday night as a very different kind of law enforcement officer — her new character Detective Kate Silva’s father just so happens to be deputy commissioner with the NYPD.
Ahead of the Season 26 premiere on NBC, the actress told TheWrap that she was blown away by the warm welcome she got from “Svu” mainstay Mariska Hargitay, who gave her a “huge bear hug” when they first met, even though Martinez was merely still auditioning for the role at the time.
Martinez also detailed the “indescribable feeling” of filming on the streets of New York as part of such a well-known franchise and how the Miami native considers the city her “second home.”

Though many core crafts in Hollywood have been members of organized labor organizations for decades and decades — some around a century — casting directors unionized for the first time just 19 years ago. Their vote to join two Teamsters Locals in 2005 was a watershed moment for the group responsible for scouting the next class of bankable movie and television stars and matchmaking actors and projects. In their first union contract, reached the next year, casting directors secured protections like union health and pension benefits, paid vacation days, and grievance and arbitration procedures.
But one typical component for a Hollywood union contract was missing from that first deal that is now having ramifications for the group, according to some members: minimum wage rates. Just like they had before they were union-represented, these freelancers negotiated their own rates in the years that followed. And now, at a moment of intense anxiety and strict cost-cutting regimens in Hollywood,...

Video game movies with a prominent storyline don’t often transfer to the big screen in a way that can live up to its source material. The movie Borderlands is a recent example. However, with a game like Minecraft, in which the whole thing is a sandbox of which the player can make anything they want, the possibilities can be endless for how a movie adapts the property. Hollywood is full of inspiring sports-themed movies, especially those focused on underdogs who rise to the occasion. But films about rowing teams are few and far between — until now. Director George Clooney’s The Boys in the Boat is a gorgeous adaptation of the Depression-era story of a group of poor but scrappy young men who find a slice of glory when they become the USA’s choice to compete in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. It is, to use a well worn cliché, a stand-up-and-cheer tale if ever there was one.
But the primary reason to cheer is the kind of unspoken underlying message within, that this is a sport where it is imperative that everyone in the boat rows as one, in unison and together physically and psychologically. This makes The Boys in the Boat not just enormously entertaining, but also important and relevant to our current world that is more divided,...

The show, which follows a team of office workers whose memories have been surgically divided between their work and personal lives, has quickly become known for the quirky underground world and reward system it has created, as executive producers Ben Stiller and Dan Erickson point to the “Waffle Party” and “Music Dance Experience” as two aspects that they’ve gotten a particular reaction to from fans.

“I wrote the very first version of the pilot while I was working at a door factory,” revealed “Severance” creator Dan Erickson at a special Emmys FYC event on Sunday night. “It was the first job I could find when I first moved to L.A. It was off of a Craigslist post. I started to hate my life so intensely that the idea of the show just came out.”
Feelings of discontent or hating anything seemed to be completely severed at the gathering inside Nobu Malibu, cheekily referred to as a “Lumon Corporate Retreat.” Waves crashed onto the sandy beach below as guests including PGA members, industry insiders, entertainers and select media enjoyed caviar, champagne and Japanese cuisine. The darkly sinister, yet whimsical soundtrack composed by Emmy nominee Theodore Shapiro set the tone.

“At my first meeting with everybody. I asked, ‘Do I read the book? Or should it just stay away and let the scripts be the information I need to do the job?'” remembers casting director Rachel Tenner about the early discussions for the Netflix limited series “Maid,” which is a fictionalized adaptation of Stephanie Land‘s memoir “Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive.” Ultimately it was decided not to refer to the book for casting inspiration and “let the scripts stand alone.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Tenner above.

When casting a series in which real-life events or a best-selling novel provides parameters for what characters should look like, a casting director’s goal is to find that ensemble’s “essence.” “You’re not going to match people, and I don’t think that’s the important part,” says Rachel Tenner, casting director of Showtime’s limited series “Escape at Dannemora.” “The important part is the story that these actors are going to tell honestly and beautifully.” Whether it’s finding an actor with the ability to channel a famous Broadway star or getting the accents of an international cast to appear uniform, this year’s nominees for limited series/TV movie/special casting were all about achieving authenticity.

During Hulu’s “Art of Casting” panel at Variety’s TV Summit Wednesday, casting directors Sharon Bialy (“The Act”) and Rachel Tenner (“Catch-22”) both admitted that casting the leading roles in their respective limited series was more streamlined than usual.
Tenner, who was responsible for finding the right man to portray the iconic fictional character of Yossarian, noted that Clooney and Grant Heslov are both extremely decisive and knew that Abbott was the right man for the role immediately.
“We wanted someone grounded, funny but also a leading man – all these great qualities,” she said. “And I was like ‘Oh,...

Because the Casting Society of America shifted the date of its Artios Awards, this year’s nominees include films released theatrically from July 1, 2013 to Dec. 31, 2014, paving the way for last year’s Best Picture winner to nuzzle its way into contention along with 2014 hopefuls like "Birdman," "Boyhood," and "Selma." With categories ranging from Big Budget Drama to Low Budget Comedy, nearly every film that one expects to make the cut made the cut. And then some. The Csa’s nominees put "Guardians of the Galaxy" side by side with "Wolf of Wall Street," "Whiplash" with "Inside Llewyn Davis," and Disney’s "Planes" with "Frozen." If you were dreaming of a re-evaluation of "We’re the Millers," your time is now. 2015’s bicoastal Artios Awards will be hosted by Patton Oswalt (Los Angeles) and Michael Urie (New York City). The evening will also honor two-time Academy Award®-nominee Richard Linklater ("Boyhood...
