After its tenth anniversary, there’s no denying that Movement has lived up to its name. The Detroit music festival once again succeeded in drawing the techno elite from every corner of the globe to celebrate the genre in the city of its birthplace, but this year’s edition in particular served as a special homecoming of sorts.
After all, the extra year digit was but one milestone reached by the techno community this past week. Shortly before the event took place, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan declared the week of May 23rd-30th Detroit Techno Week. Following that, a business report presented a couple of days later at the International Music Summit in Ibiza revealed that the genre surpassed all others in Beatport downloads last year. Then, on the first day of the festival, the Movement Main Stage was headlined by none other than Kraftwerk – a group whose music tremendously...

2016 festival lineups are still dropping left and right. The latest in a veritable cavalcade of announcements is Toronto festival Digital Dreams, which has revealed an entertainment roster studded with names sure to capture the attention of music fans far and wide.
Two months ago, the organizers of Digital Dreams announced that Above & Beyond, Armin Van Buuren and Axwell /\ Ingrosso would perform at the fifth annual installment of the festival. The full lineup announcement sees them accompanied by the likes of Borgore, Danny Tenaglia, Knife Party and Bassnectar – in addition to dozens more artists from around the world.
Last year’s edition of the festival was severely hampered by adverse weather conditions. Severe wind and rain led organizers to cancel the first day of the festival entirely and start the second day two hours behind schedule. Hopefully they’ll have more luck this year.

With how rapidly David Guetta was becoming the butt of every joke in the world of Edm, he had to do something to re-establish his credibility. This past weekend, he did just that, by delivering an “Influences” Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1 that’s chock full of the ’80s house and techno that inspired him to become a DJ in the first place.
We’ve briefly mentioned Guetta’s illustrious musical history recently, and it looks like the proper house bug has bit him again as the mix features some amazing classics. DJ Sneak and Laurent Garnier grace the many seminal names on the track list, all of whom contribute to the retro wonkiness of the mix as a whole. If Guetta feels it necessary to go to these kinds of measures to appeal to an increasingly discerning world of music fans, we’re not complaining.

Toronto’s latest dance music destination, Nest, held its grand opening celebration this past long weekend. The three-day event welcomed international DJ Black Coffee on May 15th, and Fehrplay on May 16th. We checked out the finale of the events, which saw dance legend Danny Tenaglia play for a 16-hour marathon set.
A reincarnation of the former Ryze Nightclub, the now two-storey club is the project of Vito Tomasicchio and Phillip Anthony Pulitano in conjunction with Ryze’s team. For those who are unaware, Tomasicchio and Pulitano are two of the founders of The Bpm Festival and have been working in the music industry for decades.
The club is still undergoing some renovations, but was polished enough for the opening weekend. Adorned with a giant Nest sign on the streets of Little Italy, it’s hard to miss. In comparison to its predecessor, Nest’s features double the dance space on the top floor alone.

The “Sunday School” stage at Electric Zoo has been a mainstay for old-school house and techno heads since the festival debuted in 2009. Sunday School is known for its more underground feel, featuring house and techno styles that can sometimes be harder to find at a big festival. The idea is that fans will be “schooled” by some of the most-respected names in the scene, such as Carl Cox and Danny Tenaglia, as well as “unsung underground heroes.” “In a festival atmosphere,...

An American music pioneer died yesterday. Chances are you never heard of him. His name was Frankie Knuckles and he was the Godfather of House Music. Knuckles was at the forefront of what drove dance music from the mid 80's on. He spinned at the legendary Warehouse in Chicago in the late '70s and and the Power Plant in the '80s as dance music was picking up the pieces after the death of Disco. Over the years he produced such influential tracks as "Tears," "Your Love," "The Whistle Song" and "Rain Falls." His remixes ranged from the club classic "Closer than Close" by Rosie Gaines to the amazing "Where Love Lives" by Alison Limerick to Lisa Stansfield's "Change" (she included two of his remixes on her Greatest Hits) to Toni Braxton's "Unbreak My Heart" to giving Whitney Houston one last dance number with "Million Dollar Bill...

A DJ with lots of Twitter followers, a giant stage and some impressive lasers: The American dance music festival circuit has exploded in scale over the past few years, but it's matured in style. Any number of U.S.-based mega-dance events seem bent on adding side stages, VIP packages, dinners and other accouterments, all without challenging or questioning the notion of audiences standing, watching and, at worst, filming a DJ's performance with an iPhone.
One company with decades of experience in dance music culture is looking not to change the existing festival culture, but to offer an additional experience for dance music (or, in the States, "Edm") fans who may be fatigued with existant events. ID&T, the premiere purveyor of European dance music festivals like Tomorrowland, Mystery Dance and Q Dance, is taking Sensation -- a theatrical dance experience at which attendees must dress in all white -- on a U.

Sensation touches down in America on Halloween weekend, bringing some 25,000 all-white wearing revelers to Brooklyn's shiny new cultural touchstone, the Barclays Center.
The crowd will be heading, on Friday and Saturday nights, to take part in a long-running ritual of celebration. Sensation, the global dance event put on by ID&T, is a party which places the emphasis on environments, visuals and performance. That's a departure from many of groups that would, at first glance, be in Sensation's peer group. Though Festivals from Electric Daisy Carnival to Ultra Music Festival are also heavy on Led walls, fireworks and stage production, they essentially focus on the headliners -- culled from a relatively small selection that runs from trance heavyweights like Armin van Buuren to progressive house party rockers like Afrojack.

After the triumphant sneak peek of the second season of "Jersey Shore" at Sunday night's MTV Movie Awards, castmember Pauly D has something else to pump his fist about.
The shiny-coiffed Rhode Island native has been nominated among a list of legendary DJs in the annual America's Best DJ competition. Granted, there are 100 names on the list, but the contest encourages fans of club music to vote for their favorite plate spinner, and 2010 marks the first time D has made the list.
While there are plenty of lesser-known DJs on the list, Pauly will be going up against some of the hottest and most-respected names in the game, including Armand Van Helden, Bad Boy Bill, Bassnectar, A-Trak, Carl Craig, BT, Crystal Method, Cut Chemist, Danny Tenaglia,...
