"NCIS: Origins" is a change of pace for CBS' long-running procedural franchise. As demonstrated by shows like the canceled "NCIS: New Orleans" and the short-lived "NCIS: Hawaii," the saga previously set its spin-offs in the present day but changed up the locations, leaving the door open to some exciting crossovers. "Origins," on the other hand, travels back to the 1990s and focuses on the Naval Investigative Service (which was later restructured as the Naval Criminal Investigative Service) during a time when some familiar characters were still rising through the ranks -- and dealing with some serious personal drama outside of work.
The prequel aspect of the show allows "NCIS: Origins" to answer some long-lingering questions fans of the property have been asking for years, such as what actually happened to Leroy Jethro Gibbs' wife and daughter prior to "NCIS" and why he came up with some of his famous rules.

If you’re hooked on the wild ride of ‘Yellowstone,’ you’re not alone. We all crave that mix of rugged landscapes, family loyalty tested to the breaking point, and a raw sense of justice that doesn’t always play by the rules. The Dutton family’s saga has set a high bar, blending the beauty of Montana with the messy drama of power struggles. Lucky for us, there are other shows like ‘Yellowstone’ out there that capture that same gritty vibe, keeping you glued to the screen just as much.
I get it—sometimes you need more than a single series to fill that void. Shows like that don’t come around every day, but there’s a solid lineup of options that bring the same heat. Whether it’s the clash of kin, the law of the land, or folks taking matters into their own hands, these picks deliver.

More than 60 years after shows like The Rifleman and Gunsmoke aired on television, westerns and neo-westerns are once again popular amongst audiences. But, with so many options now available on TV and online, it may be difficult to choose which series to watch.
Today’s best westerns (not to be confused with the hotel chain) capture the feel of early entries in the genre while staying relevant by incorporating modern dialogue and sociopolitical topics. This has allowed the genre to reach a wider variety of viewers than it might have otherwise done in the 1950s and ‘60s.
Wynonna Earp Brings Supernatural Elements to the Western Genre 2016-2021, Streaming on Netflix
Far from taking a traditional western approach, Wynonna Earp focuses on a descendant of lawman Wyatt Earp as she faces supernatural foes in her hometown of Purgatory. Another key character is the notorious Doc Holliday, who is played by Schitt’s Creek alum Tim Rozon.

Action movie icon Jason Stathamis used to being able to punch his enemies into submission. But what if his enemy is a giant prehistoric monster? It's going to be one season and done for the Australian neo-Western series Territory on Netflix. While the show may have been envisioned as a new Yellowstone, it will not be reaching the same levels of success.
C21 Media has reported that Territory has been canceled at Netflix after one season. Reportedly, the plan was to continue with a second season, which makes sense, given how the freshman season concluded with a cliffhanger ending. The cast and crew were informed weeks ago that Territory wouldn't be getting a second season, and Netflix has now confirmed the news after the news started hitting the press.

The merciless axe of Netflix falls again, this time on the Yellowstone-esque series, Territory. The Australian neo-western has been cancelled after just one season (adding itself to the streamer’s ever-growing list), with the outlet C21 Media confirming the news. Unfortunately, the series will now not return for its planned second season, despite Territory Season 1 earning an impressive score of 86% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Created by Ben Davies and Timothy Lee, and starring an ensemble cast that includes Anna Torv, Michael Dorman, Robert Taylor, and Sam Corlett (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Territory was one of the many current attempts to match the success of Paramount’s Yellowstone, with Territory telling the tale of the world’s largest cattle station, Marianne Station, which, when left without an owner, sees the most powerful factions in the Australian outback, including miners, landowners, cowboys and gangsters, start preparing their weapons.

Netflix just canceled its best answer yet to Yellowstone and it may be a mistake!
There's an old rule in television that when a show is a hit, you're going to see a lot of copycats trying to capture the same success. Thus, when Yellowstone became a sensation, it's no shock that other streamers would try their own shows of a family of ranchers fighting for control.
Among them was Territory, an Australian series that was released globally in October 2024. The six-episode series was pushed well with hopes of a second year.
Sadly, that won't happen as C21 Media confirms the series won't be returning for a second year. In a rarity, Netflix issued a statement on the cancellation from Que Min Luu, Netflix's director of content for Australia and New Zealand.

Netflix’s recent shot at taking the Yellowstone crown with its Australian neo-western series Territory has come to an end after only one season. Australian outlets and C21 Media report today that the show has been canceled and will not be returning for a second season.
Released on Netflix globally in late October 2024, the big Australian epic set in the outback sees rival factions all vying for control of the Lawson cattle station, which is now leaderless and without an heir to inherit it. It scored positive reviews from audiences and critics, although it didn’t hit it big in the Netflix top 10s, as we’ll come onto in a second.
Anna Torv led the cast, playing Emily Lawson alongside Robert Taylor, Michael Dorman, Sam Corlett, and Philippa Northeast. The series was created by Timothy Lee and Ben Davies with Easy Tiger Productions and Ronde Media producing.

“Cobra Kai” isn’t the only canceled TV show Netflix has resurrected. The “Karate Kid” sequel series began as an original production of the short-lived YouTube Red (now known as YouTube Premium), and it ran for two seasons on that streaming service. When YouTube decided to move away from original scripted content, though, Netflix swooped in and picked up “Cobra Kai.” Now, five years later, Netflix has released the last episodes of the series’ sixth and final season.
“Cobra Kai” is arguably the most successful and well-known example of Netflix saving a dead TV series, but the streaming service has been pulling that move for well over a decade (see: the anticlimactic return of “Arrested Development” first in 2013 and then again in 2019). Here are five other shows that were lucky enough to get a second life on Netflix.

Created by Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace, Landman arrived on Paramount+ in November 2024 and immediately became one of the platform’s most-watched shows. The series takes place in the oilfields of West Texas, where an oil boom is growing, and every fortune-seeking roughneck and billionaire wants a piece of the pie. The series follows Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton), a crisis executive at a fictional oil company called M-Tex Oil. Despite being a divorced alcoholic who’s drowning in debt, no one knows the business like he does. On par with many of Sheridan’s other shows, Landman offers a rugged narrative about salt-of-the-earth type men and their families.

After real estate developer Barlow Connally (Gerald McRaney) is shot and killed by Walt (an incident purposely orchestrated by Barlow), Barlow’s estate files a wrongful death civil suit against him.

If you've loved Taylor Sheridan's latest neo-Western drama, Landman, which follows the oil boom in the Permian Basin of West Texas, then there's an episode of Longmire that you just have to see. We know what you're thinking. How is Longmire anything like Landman? The truth is, the shows couldn't be more different. Landman is a distinct premiere drama that is uncompromising in its approach to just about every aspect of boomtown life, while Longmire thrives as a neo-Western mystery drama where Sheriff Walt Longmire (Robert Taylor) uses his keen intellect and wit to solve Wyoming-based crimes. But there's one episode of Longmire that Landman fans may appreciate, Season 4's "The Calling Back." Here's why.

NCIS: Origins sometimes feels and looks more like an NCIS spin-off series than a prequel. While NCIS: Origins has effectively presented young Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ early development as a rookie special agent at the Nis Camp Pendleton branch, NCIS: Origins has offered few surprises to longtime NCIS viewers.
However, the ninth episode of NCIS: Origins, “Vivo o Muerto,” unleashed a major surprise with the revelation that Pedro Hernandez, the Mexican drug dealer who murdered Gibbs’ daughter and wife, was killed by Gibbs before Gibbs joined the Camp Pendleton branch, as viewers, along with the show’s supporting characters, had been led to believe that Gibbs’ pursuit of Hernandez would serve as the show’s primary conflict throughout the show's first season.
The surprises continued with the mid-season finale, “Blue Bayou,” which opens in the aftermath of the events of “Vivo o Muerto” before jumping back in time six months to...

This article contains Spoilers for NCIS: Origins Episode 10, "Blue Bayou."
The midseason finale of NCIS: Origins explored an untold story in Jethro Gibb's early years in the service. Focusing on Gibb's redemption, "Blue Bayou" became the first non-procedural episode in NCIS history.
The midseason finale of NCIS: Origins finally addressed one mystery in Jethro Gibbs' backstory. Speaking to The Wrap, series co-creator David North said they set out to explain what Gibbs was doing months after he killed Pedro Hernandez; the mainline series ignored this time gap entirely. "As someone that wrote for NCIS for years, and was there on the ground floor when the original creator, Don Bellisario, came up with a lot of this stuff with Gibbs and [his family] Shannon and Kelly, I always felt there was a huge part of this that was missing, which was what happened after Gibbs killed Pedro," he said. "Well, what happened in those months?...

In January of this year something extraordinary happened. For the first time, United Artists’ Black Tuesday was shown on British television, having been originally banned for its violence. The film noir classic of 1954 stars Edward G. Robinson, one of the four giants of Hollywood’s gangster genre, alongside James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart and George Raft. At the time that Edward G. starred in Black Tuesday, he was in something of a career slump, but, in spite of his modest physical stature, he still manages to bring to bear his characteristically brutal persona. Perhaps even more surprising is how good the film is, a sort of forgotten masterpiece from the Argentinean helmer Hugo Fregonese who, in his time, had directed such stars as Gary Cooper, James Mason, Joel McCrea, Barbara Stanwyck, Robert Taylor, Lee Marvin and Stewart Granger, but who is largely forgotten today,...

Netflix's latest neo-Western program, Territory, has taken horse opera fans by storm. The series follows the Lawson family of cattle ranchers at the world's largest station in the contemporary Australian wilderness. At Marianne Station, things are done by way of family patriarch, Colin, played by former Longmire star Robert Taylor. But after the death of his son, Daniel (Jake Ryan), the Lawsons are in shambles, and Colin's eldest son, Graham, played by Joe Pickett leading man Michael Dorman, struggles to earn the trust of his father and control of the station for himself. While both Taylor and Dorman were known previously as Western-styled lawmen who protected their respective Wyoming counties with honor and a strict moral compass, Territory takes these stars to different lows, relishing the darker side of these neo-Western icons.

The recent news that the hit neo-Western drama Longmire is moving on from Netflix has come as a shock to some. Since then, Netflix has been the main way most have revisited Longmire, which is based on the series of novels penned by Craig Johnson. But with series lead Robert Taylor moving on to a new Netflix neo-Western drama with Territory, his original hit is leaving the streamer for good. But maybe that's for the best. Netflix is the biggest streaming service in the world by the numbers, holding a considerable lead in total subscribers over its second-place competitor, Prime Video. However, the streamer has been under fire on multiple occasions this year for removing its Original series from the platform, but that hasn’t stopped it from doing it once again. Netflix has officially announced that the last day to watch Longmire, the contemporary western series that has drawn comparisons to Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone, will be December 31. The show stars Robert Taylor in the lead role of Sheriff Walt Longmire, with The Mandalorian star Katee Sackhoff playing Victoria Moretti. The show earned an 88% score from critics and a 92% rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and is also streaming on Paramount+ and will continue to stream there after leaving Netflix.

The Western genre used to be one of the most popular movie genres in the mid-20th century, but the craze eventually died out. Not nearly as many Western films have been made in the last few decades. However, the genre has seen a resurgence on TV in recent years. Shows like Yellowstone, Justified, and Deadwood have made cowboys and outlaws cool again, and proven that there's an audience for intriguing stories told within the Western genre.
Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone and the shows connected to it, such as 1883 and 1923, are largely to thank for the Western genre's resurgence on TV. However, not every streaming service has the rights to stream those hit shows. Therefore, streaming services like Netflix have sought out other Western shows to attract fans of the genre. With several episodes of NCIS: Origins currently airing, the mysteries that many fans wanted to learn about are taking shape. The series dives into the checkered past of Mark Harmon's Leroy Jethro Gibbs and how he became the seasoned detective we met in the original show. Narrated by Harmon himself, the prequel premiered on October 14, 2024, featuring Austin Stowell as a younger Gibbs working in the agency at the Camp Pendleton branch. Throughout the episodes, we meet younger versions of cast members from the original, such as Vera Strickland and Mike Franks, and most recently, Tobias Fornell.
Fornell, originally played by Joe Spano, was introduced in "Yankee White" as an FBI agent who challenges Gibbs over jurisdiction. This was seemingly the first time the two characters met. On November 22, 2024, Jason Statham's irresistibly amusing killer shark B-movie The Meg was added to Prime Video in time for the holidays. A so-bad-its-good cinematic gift that keeps on giving, The Meg took a large bite out of its box office competition in 2018, spawning the 2023 sequel, Meg 2: The Trench. In 2025, Statham may reprise his role as Jonas Taylor in The Meg 3: Black Water, which will surely increase the absurd acrobatics and death-defying action scenes.
Marked by a playfully morbid humor, The Meg is a must-see for Statham action movie fans. The crowd-pleasing commercial hit may be best known for Statham getting into a ludicrous fistfight with a shark underwater, but there are still plenty of laugh-out-loud moments to balance the exhilarating shark-hunting action. With The Meg now swimming in Prime Video's streaming waters, breaking down the best and worst moments will help preview the franchise's future.

In 2015, Will Smith and Margot Robbie joined forces for a crime comedy-drama called Focus. Although the film wasn't a hit with the critics, it has found new success on streaming.
Almost a decade after its release, Focus topped the charts on Netflix U.S. in its first week since its release for the week between Nov. 11 to Nov. 17. That is even more impressive considering the film was against several new Christmas titles that are just in time for the season. Focus beat the newly released Christmas film Hot Frosty, which has an 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and Christina Milian's Meet Me Next Christmas, which dropped to number four in its second week after topping the charts last week.

At first glance, it might be easy to compare the Paramount hit show Yellowstone with Netflixs new Top-10 Australian series Territory. Both shows center on a complex family filled with interpersonal drama, fighting to hold onto land and power. Yellowstones John Dutton (Kevin Costner) and Territorys Colin Lawson (Robert Taylor) serve as the patriarchs for their families, desperately trying to hold on to their legacy and keep their cattle ranches afloat in Montana and Australia's Northern Territory, respectively. There is one glaring difference, however, between the two shows when it comes to the representation of the Indigenous characters on screen.

Will Smith and Margot Robbie's 2015 comedy-drama Focus has a lot of star power in its main leads, but it also boasts a surprisingly notable cast of characters. Focus was rather divisive when it came out; it holds a Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 56% and an audience score of 53%. It seemed that no one could agree whether Focus was an entertaining heist film filled with betrayals and twists or if it was an incoherent and overly convoluted movie. Now, however, Focus has gained popularity on Netflix, and it's likely due - at least in part - to the movie's stellar cast.
Margot Robbie and Will Smith's collaboration on Focus was one of the film's main selling points, but it wasn't the only time the actors have worked together. 2016's Suicide Squad reunited Robbie and Smith after Focus, and it gave viewers another taste of their great on-screen chemistry.
