Reportedly, the plan was to continue with a second season, which makes sense, given how the freshman season concluded with a cliffhanger ending. Netflix just canceled its best answer yet to Yellowstone and it may be a mistake!

There's an old rule in television that when a show is a hit, you're going to see a lot of copycats trying to capture the same success. Thus, when Yellowstone became a sensation, it's no shock that other streamers would try their own shows of a family of ranchers fighting for control.

Among them was Territory, an Australian series that was released globally in October 2024. The six-episode series was pushed well with hopes of a second year.

Sadly, that won't happen as C21 Media confirms the series won't be returning for a second year. In a rarity, Netflix issued a statement on the cancellation from Que Min Luu, Netflix's director of content for Australia and New Zealand.

Netflix’s recent shot at taking the Yellowstone crown with its Australian neo-western series Territory has come to an end after only one season. Australian outlets and C21 Media report today that the show has been canceled and will not be returning for a second season.

Released on Netflix globally in late October 2024, the big Australian epic set in the outback sees rival factions all vying for control of the Lawson cattle station, which is now leaderless and without an heir to inherit it. It scored positive reviews from audiences and critics, although it didn’t hit it big in the Netflix top 10s, as we’ll come onto in a second.

Anna Torv led the cast, playing Emily Lawson alongside Robert Taylor, Michael Dorman, Sam Corlett, and Philippa Northeast. The series was created by Timothy Lee and Ben Davies with Easy Tiger Productions and Ronde Media producing.

But after the death of his son, Daniel (Jake Ryan), the Lawsons are in shambles, and Colin's eldest son, Graham, played by Joe Pickett leading man Michael Dorman, struggles to earn the trust of his father and control of the station for himself. While both Taylor and Dorman were known previously as Western-styled lawmen who protected their respective Wyoming counties with honor and a strict moral compass, Territory takes these stars to different lows, relishing the darker side of these neo-Western icons.

The recent news that the hit neo-Western drama Longmire is moving on from Netflix has come as a shock to some. After its first three seasons on A&e, the series first moved to the streamer in 2015, which produced three more seasons of the program. Since then, Netflix has been the main way most have revisited Longmire, which is based on the series of novels penned by Craig Johnson. But with series lead Robert Taylor moving on to a new Netflix neo-Western drama with Territory, his original hit is leaving the streamer for good. But maybe that's for the best. After all, without Netflix, a Longmire revival feels like a greater possibility.

Longmire creator Craig Johnson wants to revive the six-season Western as it prepares to leave Netflix. Developed for television by John Coveny and Hunt Baldwin and based on Johnson's Walt Longmire Mysteries, the series debuted on A&e in June 2012 and moved to Netflix for its final three seasons. The story centered on stars Robert Taylor as the unassailable Walt Longmire, the charismatic sheriff of Wyoming's Absaroka County, with a cast that included Katee Sackhoff, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Bailey Chase.

However, the genre has seen a resurgence on TV in recent years. Shows like Yellowstone, Justified, and Deadwood have made cowboys and outlaws cool again, and proven that there's an audience for intriguing stories told within the Western genre.

Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone and the shows connected to it, such as 1883 and 1923, are largely to thank for the Western genre's resurgence on TV. However, not every streaming service has the rights to stream those hit shows. Therefore, streaming services like Netflix have sought out other Western shows to attract fans of the genre. Viewers are getting their first look at season three of the Australian drama The Newsreader. Season one of the series aired on The Roku Channel in March 2022. Sundance Now has picked up the show and will release the first season starting on December 19th and season two will follow in 2025. It is unknown if the Australian series will also air its third season on the streaming service.

The beloved Western series Longmire will hit a major streaming platform next month. Developed by John Coveny and Hunt Baldwin, the series premiered on the A&e network in June 2012 before moving to Netflix in 2014.

Longmire will arrive on Paramount+ on December 1. Based on Craig Johnson's Walt Longmire Mysteries novel series, the show follows the titular Wyoming sheriff Walt Longmire, played by Robert Taylor, who, with the aid of his staff, friends, and daughter, investigates major crimes within his jurisdiction. In 2015, Will Smith and Margot Robbie joined forces for a crime comedy-drama called Focus. Although the film wasn't a hit with the critics, it has found new success on streaming.

Almost a decade after its release, Focus topped the charts on Netflix U.S. in its first week since its release for the week between Nov. 11 to Nov. 17. That is even more impressive considering the film was against several new Christmas titles that are just in time for the season. Focus beat the newly released Christmas film Hot Frosty, which has an 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and Christina Milian's Meet Me Next Christmas, which dropped to number four in its second week after topping the charts last week.

At first glance, it might be easy to compare the Paramount hit show Yellowstone with Netflixs new Top-10 Australian series Territory. Both shows center on a complex family filled with interpersonal drama, fighting to hold onto land and power. Yellowstones John Dutton (Kevin Costner) and Territorys Colin Lawson (Robert Taylor) serve as the patriarchs for their families, desperately trying to hold on to their legacy and keep their cattle ranches afloat in Montana and Australia's Northern Territory, respectively. There is one glaring difference, however, between the two shows when it comes to the representation of the Indigenous characters on screen.

The CBS series is the newest show in the NCIS shared universe, Origins is a crime procedural prequel series set in the 1991 that follows a younger version of Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (played onscreen by Austin Stowell and via voiceover narration by original Gibbs star Mark Harmon) as he works to establish himself at the Camp Pendleton office after the deaths of his wife and child. The ensemble cast of the show also includes Kyle Schmid, Mariel Molino, Tyla Abercrumbie, and Diany Rodriguez.

Per Deadline, CBS has now officially given NCIS: Origins a full season order after airing just five episodes beginning with a two-episode premiere on October 14. This means that, on top of the 13 episodes that were originally ordered for season 1 of the prequel series, it will have an additional five episodes, bringing it to a total of 18 and extending its run further into 2025.
