10 Hilarious Period Comedy Movies That Bring Historical Eras To Life
Image
There aren't many comedy movies which use historical settings, but ones that do can have a timeless appeal. Comedy often works best when it feels timely and relevant, so the large majority of comedy movies focus on contemporary stories. Historical comedies offer something different, however, such as the opportunity to laugh at the past, and the chance to deconstruct the lofty pretensions of historical dramas.

While most period movies are judged on their historical accuracy, comedies usually have different motives. Since they don't profess to present an accurate depiction of the past, historical comedies have license to go off the rails, and inaccuracy and anachronism can often be part of the joke. While historical comedies are rarely accurate, they can still shine a light on some surprising truths about how people relate to the past, and how other movies give historical periods a quasi-mythological sheen.

All 5 Seasons Of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Ranked Worst To Best
Image
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has established itself as a top comedy, although not all seasons maintain the same quality. The show offers a fast-paced, entertaining romp with energetic dialogue and a vibrant portrayal of 1960s New York City. While some seasons may be weaker, the show still delivers laughs and heartfelt moments, with excellent performances from the entire cast.

Over the course of five seasons, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel established itself as one of the best comedies on TV, but not all of its seasons are consistent in quality. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel follows a homemaker who starts an unlikely career as a stand-up comedian after her marriage breaks down. Midge and her manager struggle to get to grips with the industry, and Midge also has trouble balancing her new life with her eccentric family. Midge and Susie are the show's true focus, but Mrs. Maisel features a brilliant ensemble cast of family members,...

Michael Imperioli at an event for The Lovely Bones (2009)
Summer of Sam: Michael Imperioli visited a witch and used otherworldly means to get Spike Lee movie made
Michael Imperioli at an event for The Lovely Bones (2009)
Michael Imperioli may be best known for playing Christopher Moltisanti on the TV series The Sopranos, but he has over 100 other screen acting credits and several writing credits (including multiple episodes of The Sopranos). His first writing credit came on 1999 crime drama Summer of Sam (watch it Here), which was directed by Spike Lee… and during an interview for the documentary Ghosts of the Chelsea Hotel (and Other Rock & Roll Stories), Imperioli revealed that he visited a witch and used otherworldly means in an effort to get Summer of Sam into production!

Scripted by Imperioli, Lee, and Victor Colicchio, Summer of Sam has the following synopsis: During the summer of 1977, a killer known as the Son of Sam keeps all of New York City on edge with a series of brutal murders. The philandering Vinny unwittingly almost becomes a victim of the psychopath, and soon he and numerous people in his orbit — including his wife,...

Mrs. Maisel Perfectly Resolves Jackie's Story After Brian Tarantina's Death
Image
The Brian Tarantina death was perfectly handled by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 4 in how Tarantina's character, Jackie, was written off the show. Season 4 picked up right after the ending of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 3 when Midge Maisel and Susie Myerson were fired by Shy Baldwin and kicked off his tour. Miriam and Susie returned to the Gaslight to lick their wounds but Jackie, who runs the nightclub in the Village where Midge was discovered, was nowhere to be found. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 4, episode 3, "Everything Is Bellmore," touchingly addressed both Jackie's fate and the loss of Brian Tarantina.

As Jackie, Brian Tarantina was part of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel's ensemble since season 1. Jackie managed the Gaslight and was Susie's boss. He always told it like it is and was straight with Midge if she was great or when Mrs. Maisel bombed on stage and got arrested.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5 Episode 6 Review: The Testi-Roastial
Rachel Brosnahan in La maravillosa Sra. Maisel (2017)
Give it up for the marvelous Ms. Myerson!

On The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5 Episode 6, Susie finally gets her due for being the best damn manager in show business.

The show is careening towards its finale with (even more!) new characters and enough time jumps to make your head spin.

This episode will likely be polarizing for viewers. Some may love it, applauding its ambitious narrative style, while others may hate it, finding it too convoluted to enjoy.

Like many of the Susie stories told by the comedians after the ceremony, the truth likely lies somewhere in between.

Seeing Susie acknowledged and praised was satisfying, but seeing how bitter and jaded she'd become was hard.

This definitely played like a "Best Of" Susie reel. With all the time-jumping, though, we're getting less grounded and more detached from the story set in the present.

Everything Midge has been going through with...

Marvelous Mrs Maisel Season 5: Cast, Plot, & Everything We Know
Image
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5 updates revealed it will be the final season of Amazon Prime's hit comedy, and it will arrive in April 2023. Miriam "Midge" Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) takes her final bow in the final season, following up the eight-episode Mrs. Maisel season 4. That season set the stage for Midge's final act as she moves forward with her controversial stand-up comedy career. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 4 marked huge changes for Midge, who rebounded after getting fired by Shy Baldwin (Leroy McClain) by becoming the in-house comic at the Wolford, a Manhattan strip club.

Midge's manager, Susie Myerson (Alex Borstein), expanded her agency and even got a new magician client while severing her ties to Sophie Lennon (Jane Lynch). Midge's ex-husband, Joel (Michael Zegen) was shocked that his girlfriend Mei Lin (Stephanie Hsu) was pregnant. As Midge's father, Abe Weissman (Tony Shalhoub) began working as the Village Voice's theatre critic,...

Emmy nominee profile: Alex Borstein says goodbye to an old friend in ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’
Image
Alex Borstein has played the no-nonsense Susie Myerson on Amazon Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” to much acclaim and to two Emmy victories. Season 4 allowed the actress to play with higher stakes than ever, as the character reached for new career highs while dealing with emotional lows. This juggling act, plus a killer monologue, could help the celebrated performer take home another Emmy.

Borstein has won three Emmy Awards from eight total nominations. She scored her first nomination as a co-producer of “Family Guy” when the series was up for Outstanding Animated Program in 2008. She then earned three bids for voicing “Family Guy” matriarch Lois Griffin, winning in 2018. That year also marked the actress’ first Best Comedy Supporting Actress nomination and win for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” She would win a consecutive trophy for “Maisel” in 2019, with additional nominations in 2020 and 2022.

Alex Borstein and Tony Shalhoub Face the End (and Brave the Twists) of ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’
Alex Borstein
A version of this story about Alex Borstein and Tony Shalhoub of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.

Of the nine actors nominated for Emmys during the first four seasons of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” two have joined series star Rachel Brosnahan in being nominated every year: Tony Shalhoub, who plays Midge’s father, Abe Weissman, and has four nominations and a win to show for it; and Alex Borstein, who plays Midge’s fiery manager, Susie Myerson, and has four noms and two wins.

They’re both back again in 2022, and it’s a bittersweet moment because it comes in the middle of filming the fifth and final season of “Mrs. Maisel,” Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino’s Amazon Prime Video show about a divorced young mother who becomes an aspiring comedian in late 1950s and early ’60s New York City.

‘Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Music Supervisor Robin Urdang on Finding the Right Music Hook
Image
Emmy-winning music supervisor Robin Urdang doesn’t like saying no to “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino. With the show’s music steeped in American standards, 1950s and ’60s tunes to reflect the era, Urdang found herself going down rabbit holes to find masters and license songs. “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” starring Rachel Brosnahan, features a mixture of well-known and obscure songs. In turn, the show’s Season 4 soundtrack is filled with both known and rare gems. For “I’m Nobody’s Baby,” by nightclub legend Miss Beverly Shaw, Urdang searched for an heir — a quest that led her to Shaw’s relative. “We needed to master [the song], but there was no recording,” she says. “So, [her family] sent us the vinyl and we got it mastered.”

Here, Urdang shares the stories behind some of her favorite needle drops from the show.

It Starts On The Page: Read A Season 4 Script For ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’
Image
Amy Sherman-Palladino was inspired to create The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel by childhood memories of her stand-up comedian father and admiration for early female comics. Her pilot script ended up becoming one of Amazon Prime Video’s most successful series to date: Over the past three seasons, the series has scored 54 Emmy nominations and 20 wins including one for Outstanding Comedy Series for its debut season.

The third episode of Season 4, “Everything is Bellmore,” is the latest installment of It Starts on the Page, Deadline’s annual series that highlights the scripts that serve as the creative backbones of the buzzy shows that will define the TV awards season. The scripts in our series are all being submitted for Emmy Awards consideration this year and have been selected by Deadline using criteria that includes critical acclaim, selecting from a wide range of networks and platforms and a mix of established and lesser-known shows.

‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’: Which ‘Gilmore Girls’ Star Had the Best Season 4 Cameo? (Poll)
Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Season 4 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.] The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel continues to dazzle audiences with its latest chapter, but for Gilmore Girls fans it was an absolute delight as several former stars appeared in guest roles for Maisel‘s fourth season. For those who don’t know by now, Prime Video‘s acclaimed comedy is created by Gilmore Girls mastermind Amy Sherman-Palladino, and so there’s quite a bit of crossover in the casting department. Previous Gilmore Girls stars who have graced the Maisel screen in past seasons range from Liza Weil, who played Rory’s (Alexis Bledel) part-time-adversary-part-time-bestie, Paris, to Emily Bergl and the late Brian Tarantina. (Credit: Prime Video) And for any viewers who tuned into Season 4, it was a chapter filled with familiar faces. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Round Table: Is The Show Handling Political Correctness In Good Fashion?
Brian Tarantina
Rip Brian Tarantina. Two years ago, the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel frequent guest-star died. He finally got a proper tribute in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 4 Episode 3.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 4 Episode 4 finally addressed Susie's sexuality, sort of, which is something many fans have been waiting seasons for. There were plots featuring all our favorites, from the Weissman's to Lenny Bruce to the increasingly tiresome Sophie Lenon.

Meanwhile, Midge continues to be a trailblazer as the Mc at a burlesque club.

These developments and more are addressed as TV Fanatics Becca Newton, Mary Littlejohn, Mike Stack, and myself discuss the latest episodes.

Do you think there is a connection between Midge's attempt to be an ally to Susie and what she did to Shy? Did she cross a line once again, or is she improving?

Mary Littlejohn: I think on a subconscious level, for sure. Maybe by making this grand gesture for Susie,...

‘The Marvelous Ms. Maisel’ Addresses Real Life Death Of Actor Brian Tarantina
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story includes details about this week’s Episode 3 Of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Brian Tarantina, the veteran actor who played Jacopo “Jackie” Dellapietra in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and died in late 2019 before filming started on recently launched Season 4, has been gracefully written out of the series. Tarantina had worked with Maisel creator Amy Sherman. Palladino since Gilmore Girls. His character, nightclub manager Jackie, was Susie’s (Alex Borstein) straight-talking boss who ran the Gaslight, the Greenwich Village club where ‘Midge’ Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) was discovered. He moved into Susie’s small apartment in Season 3 while she and Midge were on tour and his absence in the busy first two episodes of their tumultuous return this month may not have been missed. But in Episode 3, called Everything Is Bellmore, which dropped Thursday, Jackie has died suddenly of a stroke, leaving Susie bereft. When only four people turn up to the funeral,...

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Review: Death and Love
Rachel Brosnahan in La maravillosa Sra. Maisel (2017)
Warning, this review contains spoilers for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 4 Episodes 3 and 4.

Grief, burlesque, musical theatre, an awkward bar mitzvah -- this show has it all!

And that was only on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 4 Episode 3. There was a whole other hour after that, with just as much humor and shenanigans!

Tits up, Ladies, we are going through hell.

It’s always difficult when a cast member passes away.

Brian Tarantina, who played the Gaslight emcee, Jackie, passed away in November 2019. Much of Episode 3 dealt with the aftermath of Jackie’s sudden passing, with Susie losing her horrible apartment and moving in with Midge as she mourned her friend.

There is much dark humor played for laughs here. Connor Ratliff is suitably creepy as Chester, listing off the many deaths that occurred in Susie’s apartment. Despite the gravitas of Tarantina’s memory, there are still tasteful jokes...

Many TV legends and contributors were included for the “In Memoriam” segment on Sunday’s Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony for ABC. But producers are always forced to omit some of the 100+ insiders who died since the last ceremony. Who was left out of the group that was honored?

Rachel Brosnahan’s Parents Once Called Acting Her ‘Hobby’
Rachel Brosnahan in La maravillosa Sra. Maisel (2017)
The cast of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” nabbed two Screen Actors Guild Awards at Sunday’s ceremony, for outstanding male actor (Tony Shalhoub) and outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy series, the latter adding one more statue to star Rachel Brosnahan’s collection.

Brosnahan won a SAG Award last year for outstanding female actor in a comedy series. She’s also nabbed two Golden Globe Awards and a Primetime Emmy for her turn as the titular Mrs. Maisel, a housewife-turned-stand-up-comic in 1960s New York City.

But it wasn’t until Brosnahan won her first Globe in 2018 that her parents stopped referring to acting as her “hobby.”

“I had a ‘thing,’ and I could be like, [pretends to put a statue on the table] ‘It’s not a hobby anymore,’” she tells Variety. “They get it now, now that I’m not waitressing at the same time anymore, not a nanny and also trying to be an actor.

SAG Awards 2020 Review: Ranking All the Speeches from Another Solid Show
Eugene Levy at an event for Nominados (2006)
While it may have felt like the 2020 SAG Awards were hosted by Dan and Eugene Levy — even the “Schitt’s Creek” father/son duo had to tell the audience they weren’t hosting (twice) — the Screen Actors Guild knows how to put on a show without a central showman. They’ve gone without a host for 24 of their 26 ceremonies, with the two exceptions being Kristen Bell in 2018 and Megan Mullally in 2019. Both of those fine thespians did exactly that — fine! — but the SAGs wisely returned to what works and put on another streamlined, talent-focused broadcast that ran 12 minutes long, but still felt quick and should prove memorable.

Why? All the speeches!

Ok, so the show wasn’t entirely speeches. There were two tribute montages to, um, superheroes and all the great shows that ended in 2019 (plus “Game of Thrones”). The Levys got an extended intro where Eugene droned on about acting with comedic persistence (it worked!

Neon’s “Parasite” won best motion picture cast at the 26th Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, becoming the first foreign language film to pick up the top prize. Netflix’s “The Crown” was named best TV drama and Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” earned the prize for best TV comedy in a strong showing for streaming services.

“The Crown’s” victory came in a season of major changes for the insider look at the House of Windsor, one that ushered in an entirely new cast of performers, as Queen Elizabeth II entered middle age on screen.

“Mrs. Maisel,” the story of a barrier-breaking female stand-up in the 1960s, faced headwinds of its own on the path to victory. It triumphed over the heavily favored “Fleabag.” “I voted for ‘Fleabag,'” Alex Borstein, one of the cast members, said during her speech. “This is really weird. This makes no sense…...

‘The Marvelous Mrs Maisel’ Cast Dedicates SAG Award Wins To The Late Brian Tarantina
Brian Tarantina
In accepting the SAG award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series, Tony Shaloub, who plays Abe Weissman in The Marvelous Mrs Maisel dedicated his award to Brian Tarantina, who died unexpectedly in November at age 60.

“With your blessings,” Shaloub said onstage, “I will dedicate this to one of our family, who we lost this year and who we miss terribly, the most marvelous Brian Tarantina. Our brother, here’s to you.”

Tarantina played Jackie, the emcee at the Gaslight comedy club where Mrs. Masiel performs on the hit series. Last year he was part of the show’s ensemble cast who collected a SAG award.

And Shaloub wasn’t the only one feeling Tarantina’s absence tonight as the cast faces their first SAG awards without him. When the cast picked up Best Comedy Ensemble, the show’s lead Rachel Brosnahan added to Shaloub’s sentiments.

2020 SAG Awards TV report: ‘Maisel,’ ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Fosse/Verdon’ lead with 2 victories each
Sean Hayes
The 26th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards aired Sunday, Jan. 19, honoring acting and stunt achievements in film and television in 2019. And after two straight years with a host, the two-hour show, produced by four-time SAG Award winner Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner, went back to a hostless ceremony this year.

Nominations were determined by the nominating committee — about 2,500 randomly selected members of SAG-aftra every year — and all 121,000 members of the union, which now includes radio and TV personalities, and other media professionals in addition to actors after the 2012 AFTRA merger, are eligible to vote for the winners.

While the SAG Awards are a major precursor to the Oscars on the film side, it was the last stop for most TV folks, whose awards season began at the Emmys in September. “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” which swept the SAG Awards last year, had a field-leading four nominations. “Fleabag” had three bids...
