When "Stargate Sg-1" started back in 1997, it did so without the cast that fronted Roland Emmerich's original 1994 movie. "Stargate" starred Kurt Russell as Colonel Jack O'Neil, a U.S. Air Force Special Operations officer who agrees to pass through the titular portal in order to explore the strange worlds that lay beyond. Russell was flanked by James Spader, who played Dr. Daniel Jackson, an archaeologist who joins O'Neill on his perilous mission.
Originally planned as a trilogy, "Stargate" did not spawn a cinematic franchise despite doing reasonably well at the box office. Instead, Showtime debuted the TV spinoff "Stargate Sg-1" in 1997. However, Russell declined to return as Jack O'Neill, and Spader did the same for his character, leaving showrunners Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner to find some new stars. They did so in the form of "MacGyver" actor Richard Dean Anderson, who played Colonel O'Neill on the series, and Michael Shanks,...

When Roland Emmerich's "Stargate" made just short of $200 million on a $55 million budget, naturally there was talk of a sequel. In fact, Emmerich's modest 1994 sci-fi hit was supposed to kick off an entire "Stargate" film trilogy. But when the decision was made to move the franchise to the small screen, Emmerich turned down the offer to direct, citing episode budgets that weren't quite capacious enough for his ambitious vision.
Plans for a TV show went ahead anyway and in 1997, "Stargate Sg-1" debuted on Showtime. Co-created by Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner, the series used the same premise as Emmerich's film and followed the eponymous crew's exploits as they explored alien worlds by passing through the Stargate portal. While the film had been a solid hit, the show went on to garner a cult following and spawned multiple spin-off series in the forms of "Stargate: Atlantis," "Stargate: Universe," "Stargate: Infinity,...

When Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner were tasked with creating a TV spin-off based on Roland Emmerich's 1994 "Stargate" movie, they turned to MacGuyver himself, Richard Dean Anderson, to play Special Operations Colonel Jack O'Neil — the role played by Kurt Russell in the film. "Stargate Sg-1" therefore benefitted from a casting boost before it even hit the airwaves in 1997. But it wasn't just MacGuyver that helped the show become the long-running cult hit it was.
Alongside Anderson's Jack O'Neill, Amanda Tapping's United States Air Force captain Dr. Samantha Carter helped flesh out the central cast. But rather than simply providing a romantic interest for the male lead, Carter was an integral member of the "Sg-1" team, every bit Jack's equal. That said, there was always the implication of some sort of romantic entanglement between the two, even if the writers never really followed through on it.

What do you do when the last spinoff of your favorite Canadian sci-fi show ended ages ago and you've worn out your DVD box set rewatching it? If you're as obsessive as I am about my favorite franchises, you might just want to catch up with all the show's stars in their most recent projects. Luckily, when it comes to the cast of "Stargate Sg-1," there are plenty of great post-series movies and shows to choose from.
The long-running "Stargate" saga, based on Roland Emmerich's 1994 movie, has fizzled out a bit in recent years, due in part to apparently complicated rights issues. At its height, the franchise included several TV shows and movies, plus novels, comic books, games, and a web series. None of them were quite as beloved as "Stargate Sg-1," which was nominated for nine Emmys and kick-started the careers of several of its stars. Others involved...

Lots of TV series struggle to find their footing during their first season. As charming as the first season of "The Simpsons" is, for example, the show really didn't hit its stride until the second season, and depending on who you ask, only really got going around season four. So, if a show as universally celebrated as "The Simpsons" needed a little time to really come into its own, you better believe the same can be said for "Stargate Sg-1."
Fans of the series will surely agree that season 1 has its fair share of bad episodes, but none are so universally reviled as episode four, "Emancipation." This infamous installment in the series has been ridiculed since its August 1997 air date, and not just by fans. In a 2009 interview, "Sg-1" co-creator Brad Wright even said in response to a fan question, "Sometimes things get made that shouldn't. Emancipation."
What's so bad about this particular episode?...

Eric Kripke has had a knack for making some of the best television in his long decade. With over 300 episodes, Supernatural was one of the mainstays of prime-time television before its end after 15 long years on air. The show shared something with The Office and Star Trek that yielded great results for it, delivering some of its best episodes as a result.

A tradition that was first seen in Star Trek, which then The Office aped during its own production as well, Supernatural would see a slew of actors take up the role of director for several episodes, which ended up being some of the best that the show had to offer, with stars like Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins sitting in the director’s chair.

The "Stargate" franchise is a bit of a complicated one, starting with Roland Emmerich's 1994 film about ancient portals (the titular "stargates") that allow for travel between distant worlds. Just three years later, premium cable network Showtime launched a television series based on the movie, though star Kurt Russell did not reprise his role as commander Jack O'Neill, who was instead portrayed by Richard Dean Anderson. Despite moving from Showtime to the Sci-Fi channel (which became SyFy), "Stargate Sg-1" was rather successful and had a devoted fanbase that helped support not only the series but additional spin-offs like "Stargate Atlantis," "Stargate Universe," and "Stargate Origins." In fact, "Stargate Sg-1" broke a Guinness world record for the longest consecutive running science fiction series, taking over the spot from the hit Fox show "The X-Files." That record-breaking almost didn't happen, however, as the team behind "Stargate Sg-1" nearly cancelled the show after...

It's been 27 years since Stargate Sg-1 began, and the talented cast has continued entertaining audiences in the years since the series concluded. The hit sci-fi TV show started with its first season in 1997 and featured stars Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, and Christopher Judge as the titular team Sg-1. This cast continued playing their respective characters for the following years until Stargate Sg-1 ended with season 10 in 2006 (though some of the stars took breaks here and there). Of course, this wasn't the end of their careers.
2024 marks 18 years since Stargate Sg-1 season 10 came to a close, but the age of streaming means that more audiences than ever have found and fallen in love with the show. Stargate checks all the boxes for a great sci-fi, full of campy action, heroic sacrifices, leagues of aliens (both good and evil), and a team of lovable characters. So much has changed since "Stargate Sg-1" went off the air in 2007. Its ten season run, which consisted of more than 200 episodes in total, feels unthinkable in the streaming era. Perhaps that's why the show still maintains a loyal following nearly 20 years later. Audiences got to know the cast very well, with Richard Dean Anderson leading the way as Jack O'Neil, replacing Kurt Russell, who had played the character in 1994's "Stargate" film. But it was truly an ensemble piece, and Michael Shanks' Dr. Daniel Jackson was a key part of that ensemble. So, why did such a core piece of the puzzle depart the series briefly right in the middle of its run?
Shanks was one of the show's main stars alongside the aforementioned Anderson, as well as Samantha Carter's Amanda Tapping and Christopher Judge's Teal'c. However,...

"Stargate" was a tweener of a box office hit. Directed by Roland Emmerich from a screenplay he wrote with Dean Devlin, the film made $197 million globally on a budget of $55 million in 1994, which is very good but not the kind of runaway smash that automatically gets a sequel. Though Emmerich and Devlin had loose plans for a trilogy, several things got in the way, namely "Independence Day" and the opportunity to spend three times the budget of "Stargate" on a "Godzilla" remake and star-studded disaster movies. Did they choose wisely?
Fans of "Stargate Sg-1," the television spin-off that aired for five seasons on Showtime before moving over the SyFy for another five seasons, would emphatically state "No." Emmerich and Devlin might've had nothing to do with the series, but its dedicated fanbase didn't care. They got caught up in the galaxy-traversing exploits of Richard Dean Anderson and his Sg-1 crew,...

When "Stargate" debuted in 1994, it was a modest hit. Roland Emmerich's film made $196 million on a $55 million budget, turning a decent enough profit and establishing what would become a surprisingly long-running franchise. That franchise would not play out on the big screen, however. Instead "Stargate" spawned a slew of TV shows, which focused on Stargate command sending out various crews to explore forgotten and mysterious corners of the universe using the titular portals.
The first, best-known, and longest-running of these series was "Stargate Sg-1," which tapped MacGuyver himself, Richard Dean Anderson, to play Special Operations Colonel Jack O'Neil — the role played by Kurt Russell in Emmerich's movie. Show creators Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner also brought in Amanda Tapping to play the United States Air Force captain Samantha Carter — a member of O'Neil's crew tasked with exploring the universe and fending off assorted alien threats.

Kurt Russell delivered an unforgettable performance as Colonel Jack ONeill in the 1994 sci-fi blockbuster movie, Stargate, but he chose not to make an appearance in its follow-up TV series. Directed by Roland Emmerich, the movie was an adventure of sorts that featured a unique premise about an ancient portal connecting Earth to distant worlds. Russells character, crucial to the movie, was a hardened military man with a skeptical attitude; he led the expedition and braved a desert landscape filled with unknown dangers. The first entry in the Stargate universe, it was a box office success, grossing nearly $200 million worldwide.
The popularity of Stargate led to the creation of the TV series Stargate Sg-1, which premiered in 1997. The show expanded on the movies concept and saw the central team of military personnel and scientists as they continued voyaging through the Stargate to explore various planets and fight alien threats. Stargate director and co-writer Roland Emmerich opens up about why his reboot of the series is unlikely to ever come together.
Per JoBlo, the acclaimed director discussed the long-awaited project during San Diego Comic-Con. "The problem there is, it's a very, very difficult IP. Many popular sci-fi series from the 2000s focused on character-driven narratives rather than relying on special effects. The success of these series can be attributed to relatable characters and realistic storylines rooted in humanity. The genre saw a shift towards more relatable storytelling, creating beloved characters and memorable stories that resonated with audiences.
The 2000s produced gems within the sci-fi genre and the best TV series of this era focused heavily on character's stories. For many TV shows today, advanced technology and massive budgets allow creators to rely on special effects to carry the series along. However, the minimal use of special effects in the 2000s meant prioritizing a character-driven narrative instead. Many TV series creators were also aware of the risk that comes with the sci-fi genre. Delving too deep into a series' lore can become complicated and hard to follow, ultimately turning audiences away.

Don S. Davis, known for his role as General George Hammond, left Stargate Sg-1 after the seventh season due to health reasons, including diabetes and heart disease. Despite its popularity, attempts to revive the Stargate franchise have always fallen apart, making it difficult to replicate the chemistry of the original cast. Davis continued to make guest appearances as Hammond in seasons 8, 9, and 10 of Sg-1 and also appeared in Stargate: Atlantis. His final onscreen appearance was in the 2008 TV movie Continuum.
Don S. Davis' General Hammond was a key supporting player on Stargate Sg-1 for the first seven seasons, but why did the actor decide to leave? Most TV shows based on hit movies are doomed to failure, and in recasting the main roles or chopping up the story to fit the demands of an episodic approach, they often fall short. Stargate Sg-1 is the rare instance where the franchise soared because it moved to TV.

The actors of Supernatural, including Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, and Richard Speight Jr., have showcased their directing skills throughout various seasons. Jensen Ackles has directed several episodes, such as "Weekend at Bobby's" and "Soul Survivor," allowing for a unique exploration of other characters and storylines. Richard Speight Jr.'s directorial debut, "Just My Imagination," was a memorable filler episode that earned a Hugo Awards nomination and highlighted character development.
With 327 episodes and 15 seasons under its belt, Supernatural has had many directors guide the actors over the years, and sometimes the actors have taken on this role too. Long-running directors, Bobby Singer, John F. Showalter, and Kim Manners, to name a few, led legendary episodes like "Bad Day At Black Rock," "Lazarus Rising," and "Slash Fiction." However, some of the show's leading stars have displayed their skills behind the camera too, some instances being for particularly vital episodes, such as "Soul Survivor" and "Despair.

The early 2000s were an exciting time when it came to science fiction television. Several shows carried over the weird and eclectic undertones of similar series from the '90s. However, the era upped the ante by including elements that rose from the digital revolution thanks to the internet and cell phones.
As a result, despite the ever-present thematic focus on space exploration, supernatural or extraterrestrial aspects and time travel, 2000s sci-fi also began concentrating on technology and cyberspace. Nevertheless, the additional inclusion of humor with darker nuances separates shows like Invader Zim and Doctor Who from their '90s counterparts.

Jonas Quinn was a big part of Stargate Sg-1 for exactly one season, so why was his stint so brief? 1994 sci-fi movie Stargate seemed primed to spawn sequels, but instead, its spinoff Sg-1 became one of the most popular sci-fi shows of the late '90s and early '00s. This switch worked for the best, considering the titular gateway opened up a wealth of storytelling possibilities for a series to explore. The show couldn't afford the VFX and scope of its big-screen predecessor, but thanks to the chemistry of the main cast - Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge and Michael Shanks - it built a devoted following.
Even when Stargate Sg-1 received spinoffs like Atlantis or Universe, it was hard to beat the original team. Like any long-running series, Sg-1 saw some big casting shakeups, including Anderson reducing the size of his role for the final two seasons.

An unproduced TV movie would have been a stronger ending for Stargate Sg-1's team. Stargate Sg-1 is by now arguably even more popular than the 1994 blockbuster that inspired it. Not only did it run for ten seasons, it also spawned several other shows, including Stargate: Atlantis - which introduced Jason Momoa's Ronon Dex - and the short-lived Universe. Considering how robust the Stargate TV saga once was, this makes the fact it has been trapped in limbo for over a decade all the stranger. While there are occasional reports of a possible revival of the brand, Stargate is currently no nearer to returning to the big or small screen.
In addition to Stargate Sg-1's ten seasons, it also received two straight-to-dvd movies: 2008's The Ark Of Truth and that same year's Continuum. While it wasn't planned that way, the latter ended up being something of a finale...

HBO's upcoming Dead Boy Detectives series has announced the directors who will be participating in the show. The Dead Boy Detectives originally appeared on-screen in Doom Patrol, where the detectives are two boys trying to solve supernatural mysteries. First created by Neil Gaiman, the comic version of the characters are ghosts returning from Hell in the wake of a cataclysmic event, only to remain on Earth to solve crimes together as private detectives due to watching too many detective movies. Though the boys only appear for a short time in Doom Patrol, they captured the attention of HBO executives and earned a show of their own.

Torri Higginson played Stargate: Atlantis' Elizabeth Weir, and she left under something of a cloud. The character of Elizabeth Weir was originally a crucial one for Stargate: Atlantis. She was positioned as the most direct connection between Stargate: Sg-1 and the new spinoff, which saw Weir take charge of an expedition that became stranded in the Pegasus Galaxy. Surprisingly, though, Weir became a secondary character after season 3 and was then written out - with Amanda Tapping's Samantha Carter making the leap from the freshly-canceled Stargate: Sg-1 to take charge of the Atlantis mission.
Higginson herself long seems to have been dissatisfied with the way her character was treated, feeling Weir deserved to be more than a recurring character. Speaking to GateWorld, she admitted she felt she was written out in part because the writers and producers had loyalty to the cast of Stargate: Atlantis' canceled sister show. Stargate's television show co-creator gives a disappointing update on a possible new series. The science fiction show, based on the original 1994 Stargate film, ran for 10 years between 1997 and 2007. Co-created by Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner, Stargate-sg 1 serves as a continuation of the movie. Released by Metro Goldwyn Mayer, the Stargate film grossed 197 million worldwide, spawning a multimedia franchise. Starring Kurt Russell, the military space film centers around the discovery of the "stargate," an ancient ring-shaped device that allows communication across space and time throughout the universe.
Taking place about 1 year after the events of Stargate, the series, Stargate Sg-1, debuted on Showtime before switching platforms to the Sci-Fi Channel in 2002. Freeform has renewed supernatural drama series Motherland: Fort Salem for a third and final season.
Created and written by Eliot Laurence, Motherland: Fort Salem stars Taylor Hickson, Jessica Sutton, Ashley Nicole Williams, Amalia Holm, Demetria McKinney, and Lyne Renée. The drama is set in an alternate America where witches ended their persecution nearly 300 years ago by cutting a deal with the U.S. government to fight for their country. In this world, the traditional roles of gender and power are flipped, with the more dominant women on the front lines fighting looming terrorist threats that are familiar to our world — but with supernatural tactics and weapons.
News of the series’ third and final season comes just a day before its Season 2 finale, which will air at 10 p.m. Tuesday on Freeform. A battle looms for Fort Salem against witch-hunting group the Camarilla.

The "Batwoman" Season Finale episode "O, Mouse!", directed by Amanda Tapping, stars Ruby Rose, Rachel Skarsten, Dougray Scott, Camrus Johnson, Sam Littlefield, Nicole Kang, Christina Wolfe, Gabriel Mann and Meagan Tandy, airing May 17, 2020 on The CW:
"...when a former hero of 'Gotham', returns to his old stomping grounds to settle a score, both 'Batwoman' (Rose) and 'Commander Kane' (Scott) find themselves on the defensive. Meanwhile, 'Alice' (Skarsten) has uncovered what could finally take down Batwoman, but she is losing hold on her henchman 'Mouse' (Littlefield) and 'Hush' (Mann), sending her spiraling into her most wicked self. 'Luke' (Johnson) immediately focuses on finding a way to protect Batwoman from Alice, and 'Mary' (Kang) has a chance to be the sister Kate has needed all along.

Another day, another reboot.
The latest of which is a series many thought was canceled too soon. We're talking about Sanctuary!
Deadline broke the news that the series poised to return almost eight years after Syfy canceled it -- complete with original star Amanda Tapping.
The outlet reports that executive producer Martin Wood and All Canadian Entertainment have signed a deal with original rights holders Beedie to buy the rights and start development on new episodes of the series.
The original series starred Tapping as Dr. Helen Magnus as a 157-year-old teratologist, and her team of experts who run the Sanctuary, an organization that seeks out extraordinarily powerful creatures and people, known as Abnormals, and tries to help and to learn from them while also having to contain the more dangerous ones.
The series initially debuted as an eight-part web series in 2007, with Syfy later ordering a full-fledged series after...

Exclusive: Almost eight years after Syfy pulled the plug on more Sanctuary, the monstrous fantasy series is pivoting for a return, with lead Amanda Tapping potentially poised to return as the intrepid Dr. Helen Magnus.
Executive producer Martin Wood and All Canadian Entertainment have inked a deal with original rights holders Beedie to start development on new installments of the series that ran on the NBCUniversal-owned channel for four seasons from 2007-2011. Now that the When Calls the Heart producers have secured the rights, Supernatural alum Tapping is deep in talks with All Canadian to pick up the mantle of her Gemini-nominated role on a new version of the show.
“Sanctuary was truly a show that wasn’t afraid to push beyond the edges, both in terms of storytelling and visual innovation,” Wood tells Deadline of the Emmy-nominated series created by current Krypton Ep Damian Kindler. “With the technology that’s available today,...
