Calista Flockhart has reflected on her time in the title role of hit legal drama Ally McBeal, saying she “felt on trial” herself in the media.
Flockhart played the part of McBeal in the series that ran for five seasons between 1997 and 2002, and increasingly focused on the romantic lives of the lead characters.
Despite, or because of, its popularity with viewers, the show became a litmus paper for commentary in the media, with Time magazine suggesting that it signified the “death of feminism” with the female cast members’ short skirts and slim figures.
Flockhart told The Times of London that what had started out as “creating something really special” then “went to s**t” with all the scrutiny of her character’s appearance and obsession with her biological clock, symbolised by the vision of a dancing baby. She recalled:

Naomi Watts, a proud mom of a trans daughter, attended the Dior Pre-Fall show in New York City on Monday with her youngest child, Kai, as her plus one.
The stylish mother-child duo, dressed in white outfits, graced the front row among a star-studded list of attendees, joining the likes of Karlie Kloss, Rachel Zegler, Michelle Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Alexandra Shipp, and Charlize Theron, who brought along her 7-year-old daughter August.
I was amazed at how strikingly similar Naomi and Kai appeared as they arrived on the red carpet for the photocall before the runway show. Naomi Watts held hands with her youngest child, who turned 15 in December, as they posed for photos, demonstrating their close relationship.

Demi Moore, 61, Dares to Bare in Crystal Mesh Gown at Dal Cuore alle Mani Dolce & Gabbana Exhibition
I’ve always admired Demi Moore. Her incredible figure and daring yet classy red carpet style never disappoint. One of her most notable red-carpet moments to date came at the Dolce & Gabbana 40th anniversary gala, where she wore a glittering sheer gown from the Italian luxury fashion house, no less.
Demi Moore was among the celebrities invited to the inauguration of the Dal Cuore alle Mani (From the Heart to the Hands) exhibition at Palazzo Reale. In addition to honoring Dolce & Gabbana’s legacy, the exhibition celebrates Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana’s creative process, including the Italian artisans and cultural heritage that influenced their work.
Other guests include Lupita Nyong’o, Lily James, Naomi Campbell, Olivia Culpo, Helen Mirren, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Cher. All wore breathtaking outfits, but I think the evening’s most eye-catching dress belonged to Demi Moore.

“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” pits the incendiary author Truman Capote against a “gaggle” of New York socialites, but there is one “swan” that is truly at the heart of the roost, namely, Babe Paley, played by Naomi Watts. Since Babe is the closest of all the women to the writer, his betrayal of the group in 1975 in his scathing “Esquire” excerpt from his unfinished novel “Answered Prayers” hits her the hardest, and the other swans rally to her defense to ice the “In Cold Blood” scribe out of the upper echelons of society.
What makes the relationship between Babe and Truman so compelling—in addition to the performances of Watts and Tom Hollander—is how much we see of their friendship blossoming. The entire opening sequence of the season shows Capote comforting and strategizing with Babe over how to handle the latest and most disgraceful of her husband Bill’s (Treat Williams) infidelities.

Feud: Capote vs. the Swans is a reunion for Calista Flockhart and showrunner Jon Robin Baitz, who created Brothers & Sisters on which the actress starred during its five-season run. It was an instant yes, says Flockhart, when “Robbie” (as she calls him) and producer Ryan Murphy came to her with the role of Lee Radziwill in season two of the FX anthology — one of the coterie of New York City socialites with whom Truman Capote palled around (and later publicly fought) in the 1960s and ’70s.
Radziwell was perhaps America’s best-known little sister; she was four years younger than Jackie Kennedy Onassis, who always overshadowed Lee despite her own efforts to achieve fame as an actress. Warning: contains spoilers for Wicked Little Letters.
Wicked Little Letters is remarkable for two things: being stuffed with the kind of language to make a sailor blush, and generosity to the real-life figures who inspired its story. If the film had told the complete tale of the poison pen campaign that scandalised 1920s Littlehampton, audiences may not feel as ready to empathise with Edith Swan or Rose Gooding.
As played by Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley – two actors who never stop reminding you that no matter what despicable things their characters say or do, they’re flesh and blood people – Edith and Rose are easy to get behind. By the time Colman’s Edith is in the back of the police wagon taking her to serve a 12-month stretch for writing and sending a series of vulgar letters, the film invites us to judge everybody but her.
Film-Edith is the culprit but also a victim.

When Babe Paley meets Truman Capote for the first time in 1955 in the FX anthology series “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans,” it is the story of Ann Woodward that the famous writer tells in order to captivate her and her luminous friends. As Tom Hollander relishes one of Capote’s many rich monologues, we see Demi Moore as Woodward playing out two versions of the gruesome tale of the death of her husband – one in which she mistakenly shoots him, thinking he’s a burglar, the other in which she commits an act of intention homicide.
When, by the end of the premiere episode, Capote publishes his infamous excerpt from the unfinished novel “Answered Prayers” in “Esquire” in 1975, it is Woodward who takes her own life. While not one of the most prominent characters in the show, Woodward and her demise demonstrate the stakes of the feud at the heart of the series’ title.

After the disappointing “Masquerade 1966,” Feud needs to get back on track. With another time jump, this time to the aftermath of the Esquire article, Capote finds himself at odds with his Swans again. Throughout “It’s Impossible,” director Gus Van Sant tries to elevate the periphery characters. However, as the various women push back on their ringleader – Slim (Diane Lane) – it appears the Swans are ready to invite Truman back into their circle. Unfortunately, “It’s Impossible” sucks the oxygen out of the room and makes us question why the infighting continues. Van Sant directs “It’s Impossible” from the teleplay by Jon Robin Baitz.

[This story contains spoilers from the fourth episode of Feud: Capote vs. the Swans, “It’s Impossible.”]
For Diane Lane, the entire premise of Feud: Capote vs. the Swans is full of complexity and layers.
As the FX series depicts the fallout from Truman Capote’s “La Côte Basque” — a chapter from his unfinished novel, Answered Prayers, that was excerpted in Esquire‘s November 1975 issue that caused a giant rift between the acclaimed writer and his “Swans” — the actress can’t help but notice the irony that she’s playing socialite Slim Keith, one of the Swans that was outraged by Capote’s thinly veiled portrait of the elite milieu in which she was a part. “I imagine them sitting on a sofa, enjoying champagne and popcorn, and having the last laugh on all of us,” says Lane, who laughs at the meta nature of the show’s depictions of the secrets, lies and gossip shared between Keith’s wealthy cohort.

[This story contains spoilers from the third episode of Feud: Capote vs. the Swans, “Masquerade 1966.”]
The catalyst for Feud: Capote vs. the Swans‘ third episode is absolutely true.
On Nov. 28, 1966, Truman Capote held the Black and White Ball at New York City’s Plaza Hotel — an event so lavish, boasting a guest list so carefully edited, that The New York Times dubbed it “the best party ever” on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. As for the rest of what was seen during Wednesday night’s “Masquerade 1966,” well… liberties were taken.
A stylistic departure from the rest of the series, the Gus Van Sant-helmed hour is largely presented as a black-and-white documentary of the party and Capote’s (Tom Hollander) weeks of preparations for his big night. At its heart, it’s a flashback episode, with the Swans seen in various states of anxious planning — most of them under the impression that they would be the event’s “guest of honor.

Being one of Truman Capote’s Swans may have looked glamorous from the outside, but underneath the shiny exterior of high society life, all was not what it seemed.
Perhaps none were more troubled than Ann Woodward, a former showgirl who shot and killed her husband in 1955. She told the police that she presumed her husband was a burglar, and the shooting was ruled accidental by a grand jury. That wasn’t enough to stop rumors from swirling about the circumstances of her husband’s death, including gossip that came from Capote himself.
“In truth, I didn’t really know anything about Ann going into this outside of just this very kind of externalized idea of Truman having written about this woman,” Demi Moore, who plays Woodward in FX’s Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, told Deadline. “Until I really started to dive in, I didn’t know anything about her.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans, Episode 1, “Pilot.”] Feud is back and taking a deep dive into the lives of New York City’s ’60s and ’70s high society through the lens of Truman Capote (Tom Hollander) and his friendship with the “Swans,” among which are Babe Paley (Naomi Watts). As viewers see in FX‘s anthology, Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans sees the famed writer embed himself into the fabric of Manhattan’s most prominent women of the time, only to turn their deepest secrets into reading material. While there are other figures — Slim Keith (Diane Lane), C.Z. Guest (Chloë Sevigny), Lee Radziwill (Calista Flockhart), Joanne Carson (Molly Ringwald), and Ann Woodward (Demi Moore) — who cross Capote’s path, none are as close to him as Babe, the wife of CBS founder Bill Paley (played by the late Treat Williams). Plot: Acclaimed writer Truman Capote surrounded himself with a coterie of society’s most elite women – rich, glamorous socialites who defined a bygone era of high society New York – whom he nicknamed “the swans.” Enchanted and captivated by these doyennes, Capote ingratiated himself into their lives, befriending them and becoming their confidante, only to ultimately betray them by writing a thinly veiled fictionalization of their lives, exposing their most intimate secrets. When an excerpt from the book, Answered Prayers, Capote’s planned magnum opus, was published in Esquire, it effectively destroyed his relationship with his swans, banished him from the high society he so loved and sent him into a spiral of self-destruction from which he would ultimately never recover.

Calista Flockhart says the anorexia rumors that swirled around her during the heyday of Ally McBeal cast a pall over her experience on the show.

Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans — Pictured: Naomi Watts as Babe Paley. Cr: Pari Dukovic/FX Acclaimed writer Truman Capote (Tom Hollander) surrounded himself with a coterie of society’s most elite women – rich, glamorous socialites who defined a bygone era of high society New York – whom he nicknamed “the swans.” Beautiful and distinguished, the group included grande dame Barbara “Babe” Paley (Naomi Watts), Slim Keith (Diane Lane), C.Z. Guest (Chloë Sevigny) and Lee Radziwill (Calista Flockhart). Enchanted and captivated by these doyennes, Capote ingratiated himself into their lives, befriending them and becoming their confidante, only to ultimately betray them by writing a thinly veiled fictionalization of their lives, exposing their most intimate secrets. When an excerpt from the book, Answered Prayers, Capote’s planned magnum opus, was published in Esquire, it effectively destroyed his relationship with his swans, banished him from the high society he so loved and sent him...

The letters trickled in at first, and then they flooded the community. Nearly every resident of Littlehampton, a small coastal town in England, received an offensive note in 1920. Most of the libelous messages haven’t survived, but the ones that did display a dexterity with foul-mouthed language. They are a window into a different time — a rare look, in the words of historian Christopher Hilliard, at the “tangles of devotion and resentment, desire and manipulation” concealed under a working-class neighborhood’s genteel demeanor.
Mystery, tension, gossip and humor defined the Littlehampton scandal, but you wouldn’t be able to tell from Thea Sharrock’s odd screen translation. Wicked Little Letters, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, takes a one-note farcical approach to this slice of history, a peculiar move that deserts its formidable cast and squanders its thrilling premise.

By 2017’s Thin Black Duke, Oxbow’s brand of sludge rock had blossomed into a grandiose blend of art rock, noise, neoclassical, and jazz. Like their uncompromisingly experimental brethren Swans, the San Francisco noise rockers experienced a resurgence in the autumn of their career, one made all the more remarkable by the pace of their output (the band had only released two other albums since 1996’s Serenade in Red).
Oxbow’s latest, Love’s Holiday, was inspired in part by the births of guitarist Niko Wenner’s two children and the death of his father, but that sentimental connection translates into something far removed from mawkish balladeering. Singer Eugene Robinson imbues the very concept of love with an element of foreboding on the album’s opening track, “Dead Ahead.” “Believe it, heed it/This god of love destroys and creates,” he yelps on the second verse.

Spitting in the face of the “lone genius” myth that continues to plague art discourse, Swans is a far more collaborative entity than they’re usually credited for. The ever-shifting band can be compared to a brotherly pact of sorts, one forged between whoever happens to exist within frontman Michael Gira’s orbit at the time—or, more accurately, the musicians tasked with interpreting and executing his uncompromising vision.
This communal approach has allowed for much musical flexibility, but since its reformation in 2010, Swans has largely stuck to baroque, 10-plus-minute compositions that start off in D minor, get increasingly louder, then peter off with a few minutes left to spare. Which, to be clear, has produced some of the most bracing rock music of the past few decades, specifically the awe-inspiring one-two punch of 2012’s The Seer and 2014’s To Be Kind. But after those seismic releases—along with 2016’s...
