The Candidate Film Has Ties to a Real Presidential Candidate

Quick Links Robert Redford's Dazzling Political Dramedy The Candidate's Surprising Ties to the Real World The Candidate Becomes a Cinema Success

Silver screen legend Robert Redford is no stranger to starring in beloved classics and delivering unforgettable performances, and he knocked it out of the park when he appeared as an unconventional U.S. Senate hopeful in the satiric 1972 political dramedy The Candidate. The sharp and witty film chronicles Redford's lawyer-turned-politician as he wades into foreign waters while on his quest to "defeat" the Republican nominee, with the charismatic character initially being chosen only because he had zero chances of winning.

The Candidate went on to achieve widespread acclaim, and Jeremy Larner took home the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, with the brilliant writer having had quite a bit of personal experience in the world of politics in preparation for penning the celebrated '70s hit. Let's explore...

"Power Book II"'s Shane Johnson Says He Knew Cooper Saxe "Wasn't Going to Survive Forever"
Image
If there's one thing "Power Book II: Ghost" has proven in season three, it's that nobody's safe - not even original characters who survived the spinoff's parent series. In a rather shocking and completely unexpected turn of events, the Starz series has done away with a character that viewers have been waiting almost a decade to see meet his downfall: Cooper Saxe (Shane Johnson).

For years, Saxe has miraculously figured out ways to escape a lot of close calls - including almost getting strangled to death by Ghost (Omari Hardwick) and Tommy (Joseph Sikora) in "Power" - but his conniving ways have finally caught up to him in a fatal conclusion, as with most "Power" antagonists.

After six seasons of "Power" and three installments of "Power Book II," it's nearly impossible to list all the dirt Saxe has done through the years. In the original series, his relentless hunt to...

"Power Book II"'s Showrunner Reveals Why Season 3’s Fifth Episode Is a "True Turning Point"
Image
Dark secrets have been controlling all the action so far in "Power Book II: Ghost" season three, but episode five marks what showrunner Brett Mahoney calls the "true turning point" that's put everyone on notice.

The episode, titled "No More Second Chances," picks up after the shooting death of Detective Kevin Whitman (Jeff Hephner) in Monet's (Mary J. Blige) house, with the feds snooping around on suspicion that her self-defense excuse is really a murder cover-up. There's also the fact that Monet has finally figured out who killed her son Zeke: her husband, Lorenzo (Berto Colón). Then, on the other side of "Power Book II," Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr.), his girlfriend, Effie (Alix Lapri), and partner-in-crime, Brayden (Gianni Paolo), get roped into a mess overseas during their business trip to Italy, as the latter gets kidnapped while on a mission for their new drug connect, Noma (Caroline Chikezie).

"Episode five...

How Detective Whitman's Fate in "Power Book II" Season 3 Connects Back to the Original Series
Image
Another week, another major player on "Power Book II: Ghost" meets a tragic fate - though many viewers probably saw this one coming. This time, the hit "Power" spinoff bid farewell to the nuisance that is Detective Kevin Whitman (Jeff Hephner) after he overstepped his boundaries one too many times with Monet (Mary J. Blige).

Ever since the death of Monet's nephew son Zeke (Daniel Bellomy), Whitman has been hot on her tracks trying to pin a murder on her that he thinks she committed, aka Carrie Milgram's (which she committed for sleeping around with Zeke). Note: Carrie and Whitman have history together, too. Whitman, a too-dedicated-to-his-job detective, has also been working with federal prosecutor Jenny Sullivan (Paton Ashbrook) and Detective Blanca Rodriguez (Monique Gabriela Curnen) to aid their Rico case that could get Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr.), Brayden (Gianni Paolo), and the Tejadas - Cane (Woody McClain), Dru (Lovell Adams-Gray...

Power Book II: Ghost Post-Mortem: Paton Ashbrook Talks Jenny's Secrets & Her Desire To Win
Jenny Sullivan in Starsky y Hutch (1975)
Power Book II: Ghost Season 3 has been on an absolute tear.

This season has been a thrilling ride thus far, delivering non-stop action and raising the stakes higher than ever before.

Part of that exhilarating journey has revolved around those on the other side of the drugs and murder, namely Jenny Sullivan, who has made it her personal mission to rid the streets of the murderous group of criminals that have evaded the law for so long.

We got to jump on a video chat with Jenny's portrayer, Paton Ashbrook, who was gracious and extremely candid in her responses to all our pressing questions. It's always great to speak with actors who are so passionate about the characters they portray.

This was a wonderful conversation, with some great insight into what we'll continue to see from Jenny and her storyline as the season progresses.

Coming off of Power Book II:...

Power Book II: Ghost Season 3 Episode 2 Review: Need vs. Greed
Jenny Sullivan in Starsky y Hutch (1975)
It's not Power without a copious amount of lies, betrayal, and blackmailing!

And right now, it's all working, which means as the season unfolds, we should be in for a lot of fireworks when someone inevitably gets in over their heads.

Power Book II: Ghost Season 3 Episode 2 was a fantastic comedown from the premiere, setting a lot of moving parts into motion, injecting some new storylines into the mix, and putting us on the right path for a hell of a season.

When Lauren appeared alive at the end of Power Book II: Ghost Season 3 Episode 1, it was totally unclear what happened to her and how she ended up with Jenny Sullivan.

But we got the explanation here, and it wasn't exactly what some people were guessing.

I wondered whether or not Effie went through with killing Lauren because we never saw anything beyond her knocking her out. But the...

Lauren Baldwin is very much among the living, but where has she been?

Fans were in for a shock when Lauren showed up at the conclusion of Power Book II: Ghost Season 3 Episode 1, and we're all waiting on pins and needles to see where things will go next. There are a ton of questions, starting with what happened?

As we await those answers, TV Fanatic checked in with Lauren's portrayer, Paige Audrey-Marie Hurd, to talk about what it was like keeping That secret, where we'll find Lauren when we meet back up with her, and what its been like being a part of the Power family.

And the questions didn't stop at just Power, as we talked about her time on The Oval and some of her favorite series.

It was a very well-rounded chat with the warm and affable Hurd. Enjoy, Power fans!

‘Power Book II: Ghost’: Mary J. Blige Talks Monet’s Grief In Season 3; Collabing Musically Again With Method Man
Image
Spoiler Alert: The following story reveals major plot points from the Season 3 premiere of Starz’s Power Book II: Ghost.

Power Book II: Ghost dropped its third season premiere on Friday titled “Your Perception, Your Reality” and as expected, it’s filled with sadness and frustration following the tragic events of last season.

Monet (Mary J. Blige) is really going through it following the murder of her son Zeke (Daniel Bellomy). She’s lost her way and healing can only begin by her avenging his death—an eye for an eye. Being that her husband Lorenzo (Berto Colon) shot down Zeke accidentally in a case of mistaken identity, things are plenty complicated.

In the meantime, Monet is so enveloped in grief that she neither notices the internal struggle going on in the family nor that there’s a new baddie in town named Noma (Caroline Chikezie) who is searching for...

"Power" Showrunner Confirms Lauren's "Exit" Is Still a "Huge Issue" in Season 3
Image
Surprise, "Power Book II: Ghost" fans - Lauren is back! Well, technically, according to season three's March 17 premiere, she never actually left. As viewers may remember, Lauren (played by Paige Hurd) was thought to have been killed off by Effie (Alix Lapri) and Brayden (Gianni Paolo) in season two's penultimate episode. After it's discovered that she's working with Ada Jenny Sullivan (Paton Ashbrook) and catches Brayden, her boyfriend, Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr.), and Cane (Woody McClain) talking about their drug dealings on a wire, Effie and Brayden, unbeknownst to Tariq, take Lauren out to the woods to kill her - all in an effort to avoid criminal charges.

Though viewers didn't see Hurd's character actually die, many believed that scene marked the end of the road for her, with Jenny later revealing that Lauren's body was found by locals after a "car accident." That turns out to be a complete lie,...

Power Book II: Ghost: The Stakes Are Higher Than Ever in Season 3 Trailer
Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze in Ghost (Más allá del amor) (1990)
Power Book II: Ghost Season 3 is poised to be the most dramatic season in franchise history.

Starz dropped the full-length trailer for the new season Thursday, and it looks like things are more intense than ever.

According to Starz, the new season kicks off with Tariq St. Patrick determined to get his trust, get back to his family, and get out of the game for good.

The emergence of a ruthless new connect interrupts Tariq’s plans to reunite with Tasha and Yaz and puts him, Brayden, and Effie back into business with the Tejadas as they’re challenged to move more weight than ever before.

When Brayden brings Tariq in as an intern at his family’s hedge fund Weston Holdings, the drug business expands beyond Stansfield and the streets onto Wall Street, while Tariq is also shown an alternate, legitimate path to success.

Per Starz: “Ealy joins the cast as Detective Don Carter, a rising NYPD officer who was on track to become Police Commissioner until his wife was killed in a crossfire between rival drug gangs. Vowing to make the streets safer, Carter traded in his tie for a kevlar vest and now leads an elite NYPD drug task force that elicits concrete results against drug-related violence. Secrets, Lies, and Murder Shake Things Up in the "Power Book II: Ghost" Season 3 Trailer
Image
Good news, "Power Book II: Ghost" fans. After what feels like forever, the hit spinoff's third season finally has a premiere date - which means we're one step closer to finding out what happens after season two's dramatic cliffhanger finale. Additionally, on Dec. 15, Starz unveiled all-new details about season three, including a short teaser that shows Michael Rainey Jr.'s Tariq getting blood on his hands (literally) as secrets, lies, and more trouble threaten to shake his world up yet again.

"Power Book II: Ghost" got the green light for season three around this time last year, not even halfway through season two. It's obvious the second installment of the Power franchise has become a major hit, almost as big as its predecessor, and much of that has to do with Michael Rainey Jr.'s Tariq St. Patrick anchoring the series.

"It's going to be a lot going on."

"Power Book II: Ghost"'s Season 2 Finale Confirms Lauren's Ending
Image
"Power Book II: Ghost"'s season two finale finally addressed our lingering questions surrounding Lauren's whereabouts. The previous episode picks up on the action that follows Professor Milgram's (Melanie Liburd) death and the Tejada family drama, but in the following one, Lauren's (Paige Hurd) body finally turns up from a "car accident," bringing her character arc to a tragic end.

As seen in episode nine, "A Fair Fight?," Tariq learns that there's more to the story of his ex-girlfriend catching him on a wire - Lauren also caught Brayden (Gianni Paolo) and Cane (Woody McClain) on it as well. In episode five, Lauren wears her wire when she stops by Brayden and Tariq's dorm room looking for the latter. There, she gets introduced to Cane as "Lorenzo." She gets intel on the wire that Ada Jenny Sullivan (Paton Ashbrook) tries to use in court, but Brayden foils her plans and gets the entire case dismissed.

Play Jackie O in a One-Woman Equity Drama in L.A.
One talented actor is sought for what could be considered a role of a lifetime. “Jackie Unveiled,” a one-woman drama about the life of Jackie Kennedy Onassis that intends to “peek behind the façade of America's most private public figure,” will hold Equity Principal Auditions in Los Angeles for the title role. Naturally, for a role like this, the bar for prospective talent is set incredibly high. The female actor, aged 18 or older, must be able to portray the first lady at the ages of both 38 and 64; at the former age, “a sophisticated, sexually manipulative, fiercely protective mother,” and at the latter attempting to “put her life in perspective as she faces her own mortality.” The team, which includes the drama’s writer Tom Dugan and director Jenny Sullivan, will see talent Sept. 26 in Beverly Hills, California. There will be an initial workshop Dec. 4–9, with rehearsals slated to begin Jan.

Stephanie Zimbalist Takes on Katharine Hepburn

When we first learned that Stephanie Zimbalist was playing Katharine Hepburn in a one woman show, we were nervous. Not that we don't think that the former Remington Steele star is a talented actress in her own right. But, Hepburn is an icon... and one with the kind of very distinct, easily overdone speech affectation that can go terribly wrong when put in the wrong mouth. But we were pleasantly surprised by the show Tea at Five at the Falcon Theatre in Burbank-adjacent Toluca Lake, California.

As is always the case at the Garry Marshall owned playhouse, the production values were excellent. The set transported the audience to the Hepburn family beach house in 1937. A film flop addled Hepburn was waiting for the big call—would she get the career reviving part of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind?

We all know how that worked out.

'V' pilot invades ABC
ABC has greenlit a pilot for a reworked version of the '80s sci-fi classic "V."
