Fact-checking on social media gave rise to a new flavor of libel suit in which a person alleges defamation when a post is labeled as false but, just as fast as it is filed, it’s getting tossed out of court. The most recent dismissal came Tuesday when a federal judge ruled that Facebook doesn’t have to face a lawsuit from TV journalist John Stossel, who sued over labels attached to his videos about the 2020 California wildfires and climate change.
U.S. District Judge Virginia DeMarchi found that Facebook couldn’t have defamed Stossel because its fact-check program “reflects a subjective judgment about the accuracy and reliability of assertions” made in the content that’s been checked. “Simply because the process by which content is assessed and a label applied is called a ‘fact-check’ does not mean that the assessment itself is...

This era of social media is bringing about a new genre of libel litigation — one where an individual says something, then is corrected, and then goes to court with bruised reputation. The latest complaint comes from John Stossel, the veteran TV journalist who on Wednesday sued Facebook in California federal court over what was affixed to his post about 2020 California forest fires and their cause.
“This case presents a simple question: do Facebook and its vendors defame a user who posts factually accurate content, when they publicly announce that the content failed a ‘fact-check’ and is ‘partly ...

What do singer Carly Simon, comedian Wayne Brady, journalist John Stossel, many top lawyers, President Joe Biden, and King George VI have in common? All speak or spoke with a pronounced stutter from their early childhood days.
Despite this, each achieved a meaningful and highly visible career in music, comedy, law, and leadership, where speech and communication are imperative to success.
Simon, Brady, Stossel, and attorney Eric R. Dinallo were among the public figures who discussed their personal experiences with stuttering at the American Institute for Stuttering’s 15th annual “Freeing Voices, Changing Lives” celebration. The King’s Speech screenwriter David Seidler also shared his insight into how King George VI worked with early speech therapists to manage his stutter.
The Gala raised funds to provide free or reduced cost speech therapy to qualifying children and adults throughout the country.

While many fans are still reeling from the Friday official announcement that Regé-Jean Page will not be returning to Netflix and Shondaland’s Bridgerton, John Oliver is taking the news in stride and finds it fitting for Page’s character, Simon, the Duke of Hastings.
Oliver referenced Page’s departure in the main segment of his HBO show Last Week Tonight Sunday focused on the U.S.’s rising national debt. After a clip from a John Stossel story on the debt issue that used footage from the riots in Greece during that country’s debt crisis, Oliver contended that “cutting to a footage of a riot can make anything seem more dire than it might actually be” before using the same unrest video after bringing up Page’s departure from Bridgerton to illustrate how the manipulative editing makes the news feel “pretty scary.”

Vice TV has renewed hit professional-wrestling docuseries “Dark Side of the Ring” for a 14-episode third season, which will premiere in 2021.
We do not yet know which subjects will be covered in the supersized (Season 2 had 10 episodes) Season 3.
Last season, “Dark Side of the Ring” covered the Chris Benoit murder(s)-suicide, The Road Warriors, the murder of wrestler Dino Bravo, WWF’s “Brawl for All,” the career of hardcore wrestler New Jack, David Schultz assaulting “20/20” reporter John Stossel, the death of Jimmy Snuka’s girlfriend Nancy Argentino, Owen Hart’s tragic death at a WWF pay-per-view event and Herb Adams’ attempt to build a wrestling empire.
The Season 3 renewal news should probably come to those in the know as a formality: “Dark Side of the Ring” is Vice TV’s highest-rated show.

The Boys are back and better than ever.
The opening scenes of The Boys Season 2 Episode 1 were off the wall
Incredibly gory and funny as hell, those scenes wasted no time dunking you right back into the deep end of these crazy mofos.
Citizens may still have their heads in the sand, but as the suits discussed admitting The Seven as another branch of the Department of Defense, the reality of their brand of terrorism was washing over those who were left holding the proverbial bag of poo with the new addition.
Just so you know, a 34% casualty rate is astronomical. It is clearly not worth the time or effort to promote The Seven, but thanks to a top-notch marketing team at Vought, they're all in nonetheless.
That the discussion played out over Black Noir's actions was just precious, even with the icing on top that he left a poor...

Welcome to this week’s All Elite Wrestling: Dark review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and both Shad Gaspard and Larry Csonka have GoFundMe campaigns available here and here. Me and my old lady, Countess McScrew, are gonna haul ass to Las Vegas and bet it all on broke. Hiya!
Match #1: Hikaru Shida def. Dani Jordyn
My Opinion: 3.1 out of 5 – I liked the way this cookie crumbled. The chocolate chips melted in many of the right spots and the batter never broke down to sugar soup like when Boo Berry was offed by Monsanto for pissing off the Corn-Holes. Shida and Dani meshed really well and knocked the snot out of each other.
Match #2: Qt Marshall def. Clutch Adams
My Opinion: 2.5 out of 5 – This was alright, but there was no tepee for my bung-hole, so it made me sad.
Match #3: Marko Stunt def. Jason Cade...

Match #1: Bobby Lashley def. Humberto Carrillo – No Disqualification Match The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
In a wild battle that saw steel chairs come into play, The All Mighty picked Humberto Carrillo out of the sky and forced him to tap out to a fearsome Full Nelson.
My Opinion: 3 out of 5 – This was a fun way to watch people hurt each other for money. I wonder if John Stossel thinks that this part of the job is fake? Bl and Hc didn’t get too intense with this plunder-fight, but at least they didn’t make out at all…...

Outspoken Libertarian John Stossel is moderating Friday’s Green Party town hall, but the Fox Business host told TheWrap he is eager to take part in the event for a rival party because “other opinions should be heard.” The Green Party is “very far left, both on their views of the economy and the environment,” Stossel said, before explaining that he feels Green Party supporters “think the government is the solution to most every problem.” The Green Party did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment. John Stossel will host a Libertarian town hall with third party presidential candidate Gary Johnson and his vice presidential running mate William Weld on Fox Business Network Friday, and the TV veteran wants Americans to understand what the party represents. Stossel, a Libertarian himself, describes his party as people who believe Americans “should be allowed to do anything that is peaceful.” “The founders had similar beliefs and that’s what helped America go from poverty to the most prosperous nation on earth,” Stossel told TheWrap. “Limited government, they talked about. We’ve gone way beyond limited government.” Also Read: Here's How Donald Trump Could Create.

Fox Business Network's John Stossel is back at work after undergoing treatment for lung cancer.

Now recovering, Stossel tells People he is already back to playing beach volleyball in Central Park (though he admits he huffs and puffs a bit because of the surgery).

Oxford Dictionaries has released their annual list of pop culture words added to their dictionary and ‘Kayfabe’ has made it this year.
Here’s how the word is officially described;
“Probably not familiar to those outside the world of pro wrestling, the term kayfabe refers to ‘the fact or convention of presenting staged performances as genuine or authentic’. The origin of the word is uncertain, although it is often said to have arisen in American travelling carnivals. The word has been interpreted by some as being an alteration of ‘be fake’ backwards, while the -ay- element is typical of the way words are formed in Pig Latin.”
And they try to tell us kayfabe is dead…
To qualify for this list, words quite frankly just need to be words. Nothing more. They’re taken quite literally from anywhere as the site describes as being ‘from television shows to 1980s films to Shakespeare.

Even if you completely adore it, nobody can deny that the professional wrestling business is pretty darn wacky. The industry itself is almost set-up to be bonkers, which only heightens the appeal for many people! Attracting life’s more colourful characters has long been a hallmark of wrestling – where else would one experience people with stage names like Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, The Ultimate Warrior, or even more modern examples like Dolph Ziggler?
There’s something seriously endearing about the fact that the grappling world lures such figures into its clutches, and that resonates over to the fans. Wrestling fans are looked upon by the rest of the world as a curious breed – whilst highly critical of the thing we love, we’re also fiercely loyal should anybody from the ‘outside’ attack it. It’s a strange brew indeed, but a wonderful one.

Suki Hawley, David Beilinson and Michael Galinsky of Rumur Films are an amazing trio of filmmakers who have made many important must-see documentaries, such as Battle for Brooklyn and Who Took Johnny?.
But with their latest project, All the Rage, they are attempting to actually change viewer’s lives.
All the Rage is a profile of Dr. John Sarno, the American doctor who has been a nearly lone — but absolutely essential — voice in the wilderness of modern day medicine. Dr. Sarno has long championed a holistic mind-body approach to solving numerous common ailments, including — most famously — back pain. His contention that most back pain is the result of psychological trauma over physical trauma has earned him the devotion and respect of the thousands of people he has cured.

It seems as if the WWE may be facing some backlash from their contracted talent after the shocking release of Alberto Del Rio last week.
Del Rio was cut from the WWE last week for what WWE referred to as “unprofessional conduct.” Shortly after the news broke, details emerged noting that Del Rio had slapped a WWE.com social media worker after allegedly making a racist comment.
Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio stated that Del Rio tracked down the employee, Cody Barbierri, and asked him to apologize to no avail. After Barbierri laughed off the situation Del Rio delivered what Meltzer described as a “John Stossel-David Schultz” slap.
As of now Barbierri is still with the company but many expect him to be cut loose as the company doesn’t want to advocate racism any more than violence. Many wrestlers are also said to be...

WWE’s roster is an ever-changing entity full of superstars, aging veterans, up-and-comers and the inexplicably still-employed. It seems every year there is a rash of performers released for various reasons, which is announced via WWE.com’s patented tagline “We wish them the best in all their future endeavors.”
Wrestlers are fired for various reasons, oftentimes justifiable. Yet there are those cases where we’re left scratching our heads trying to figure out what the company was thinking letting a talent get away. We’re going to be taking a look at some examples of WWE releasing a performer who had much more to give WWE and its audience. For the most part I will not be including anyone who was released for personal issues such as legal problems or drug usage, and evaluating talent I feel could have made a much bigger impact during their time in WWE.

Lisa Kennedy Montgomery is best known to a generation as, simply, Kennedy — the hip MTV VJ who helped introduce America to Nirvana and Soundgarden on Alternative Nation, mimed oral sex on a mic during the 1994 VMAs — while standing next to Rudy Giuliani, no less — and eventually came out as a die-hard Republican. (In a ’94 Vanity Fair profile, she even declared her ardent love for former vice president Dan Quayle.)
Nearly 20 years later, the 41-year-old mother of two has left her wild-child past behind for a career as a writer, radio host, and Fox Business contributor. But while her political views haven’t really changed,...

On Fox & Friends Thursday morning, Fox Business Network host John Stossel undertook his annual ritual of promoting the idea that most homeless panhandlers are not "for real" by recycling footage of John Stossel fake-panhandling in 2011. while liberal blogs like ThinkProgress whined about the factual and logical accuracy of Stossel's segment, and pinkos all over the liberal blogosphere cruelly mocked Stossel as though he were some kind of horrible person, they all conveniently forget that there's a very good reason Stossel accuses the homeless of being fake.

Fox Business Network host John Stossel recently dressed up as a homeless man to prove that people will give money to anyone on the street who appears needy. Sitting down with the hosts of Fox & Friends, he said that both he and many needy advocacy groups recommend not giving money to homeless people on the street because most are only seeking to fund their drug and alcohol habits.

As a libertarian, I have the utmost respect for my former boss John Stossel. Along with Judge Napolitano and Red Eye's Andy Levy, he is one of the very few libertarian voices in cable news. But every once in awhile he takes stance I just can’t support: Most recently, he declared his ambivalence about the Nsa’s expansive surveillance operations.

We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, we’re lobbing queries left and right about shows including Orphan Black, Game of Thrones, The Killing and Burn Notice!
1 | Why is no one talking about why Orphan Black‘s Sarah left in the first place? And who is Kira’s father?! Oh, and is it Spring 2014 yet?!
2 | What was bloodier: Game of Thrones‘ Red Wedding massacre or the subsequent heated discussion between viewers who have read the books (and were prone to spoil what’s coming) and those who hadn’t?
Related | Spoilers for Castle,...

Emily Blunt was one popular woman last night at the American Institute for Stuttering's seventh annual Freeing Voices, Changing Lives benefit gala in NYC. She stunned in a midnight-blue Zac Posen gown while walking the red carpet with her husband, John Krasinski, but also stopped to cuddle up to the likes of Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, and John Stossel before heading into the Tribeca Rooftop. Although Emily worked the carpet, Samuel was the guest of honor, commended by the organization for his success in the film industry despite a childhood struggle with stuttering. Serving as emcee for the event, Emily has also opened up about overcoming her stutter in the past, crediting her acting career for her fearless ability to speak today. The actress serves on the Ais's board of directors and has been a speech advocate for five years. Emily may be putting her voice on further display...

On Thursday, in an appearance on Fox & Friends, Fox Business Network host John Stossel illustrated a point about the unnecessarily expansive state America’s welfare complex by saying that the nation fared relatively well when those programs were not in place during the Great Depression. He claimed that “no one” starved during that period of persistently recessed economic growth. Stossel later called that comment “dumb” and issued a correction.

Neil Cavuto is our favorite watch on Fox Business Network (Fbn). The anchor combines the right amount of self-effacing humor and thorough knowledge of current events to offer a more balanced look at the news than many of his sister network Fox peers. The news channel will provide live coverage of President Obama.s State of the Union address beginning at 9:00 Pm/Et on Tuesday, February 12th. Neil Cavuto will anchor the coverage with Fbn.s Peter Barnes and Rich Edson reporting live from Washington, DC. Following the address, Fbn.s John Stossel will host a special edition of Stossel at 11:00 Pm/Et with a live studio audience to react and discuss the event, coming this Tuesday, February 12, 2013; 9:00...

Bill O'Reilly came out in favor of affirmative action tonight. Not affirmative action based on race of social status, but on political ideology. O'Reilly looked at the rising trend of college faculties being majority-liberal, and said that while at private universities this is not a bit deal, it is a serious problem for state universities, which are paid for with taxpayer dollars. John Stossel differed with O'Reilly, sticking to his limited-government guns and not wanting any more intervention in the school system.

John Stossel And Donald Rumsfeld Trade Barbs Over Military Spending At Washington Times Dinner Party
It's no secret that libertarians want to cut defense spending and are largely skeptical of the foreign policy of the Republican Party. During the George W. Bush administration, some of its most vocal foreign policy critics came from the libertarian corner. That deep-seated division played out for everyone Tuesday night at The Washington Times' 30th anniversary dinner party when Fox Business host John Stossel took a slight jab at former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld while introducing the former Bush official's keynote address.

In a segment with Bill O’Reilly on Tuesday night, libertarian Fox News Channel host John Stossel defended President Barack Obama’s recent decision to allow the states more flexibility to define work requirements for welfare beneficiaries. Stossel broke with Republicans who have criticized the measure as the possible watering down of the 1996 welfare reform compromise. Stossel said that, if states think they can make those work requirements more strict, they should be allowed to try.

Gather 'round for Friday story time, kids. Today's edition featuring Fox Business Channel's John Stossel — who, at the after-party for last night's premiere of The Imposter, shared an anecdote that's equal parts funny and...bizarre. Back in the day, when Stossel was at ABC, he learned he had an imposter. Who was using Stossel's mustache dashing good looks to pick up women in bars.

Fox Business Network host John Stossel appeared on Fox News Channel’s Fox & Friends on Thursday to dispel the myth that there are almost no low or no experience jobs available. On Thursday night's edition of Current TV's The Young Turks, host Cenk Uygur lit into Fox News contributor John Stossel over a Fox and Friends segment in which he bragged about suckering people into giving him money by pretending to be a panhandler. While Cenk's righteous anger is perfectly justified, Stossel's sick display is just a scratch on the surface of how the Fox News (opinion programming!)-led conservative media hurt the most desperate Americans.

Like Joe Muto, the ex-o'Reilly Factor producer now known as Gawker's "Fox Mole," I too ceased working at Fox News last week. I had qualms about working at Fox initially and, throughout my three years there, had concerns about some of the network's editorial decisions. But unlike Muto, my departure was on entirely good terms. I found the network to be a pleasant place to work, and producing for John Stossel there was always a great source of pride for me.

Fox News' John Stossel paid a visit to the Occupy Wall Street crowd on Tuesday and received whatever the opposite of a warm embrace was from the protesters. The short clip of him being confronted by some protesters as he strolled by and asked questions played out more like a police officer walking past a rowdy group of prisoners than a man who looks like Geraldo Rivera paying a visit to a protest. Stossel then showed his short collection of clips to Bill O'Reilly, who wondered what this Occupy Wall Street thing was all about:...

With Rep. Ron Paul remaining throughout the year a steady presence in 2012 Republican polls, Bill O'Reilly took some time to explore his impact on the field tonight. But O'Reilly wasn't concerned with the Republican Party-- he asked John Stossel whether he was concerned that Rep. Paul was doing damage to the libertarian movement with his claims President Obama could likely be impeached. Stossel didn't seem to see the problem-- "he's not hurting the libertarian movement; he is the libertarian movement!"...
