Pee-wee’s Playhouse was the culmination of a character created back in the 70s by the multi-talented Paul Reubens. Reubens had joined the comedy group the Groundlings in the 70s. The Groundlings was the jumping-off point for several famous comedians and icons. This would include Phil Hartman, Lisa Kudrow, Cassandra Peterson, Craig T. Nelson, a who’s who list of SNL Alumni, Conan O’Brien, JJ Abrams, and well…just a lot of people.
A number of the troupe who were there when Reubens was a part of the Groundlings would wind up as part of not only Pee-wee’s Playhouse but also other Pee-wee projects. I mean…who can forget Cassandra Peterson, Aka Elvira, as the biker gang badass chick who wanted a go at Pee Wee first?
From his time creating the character at The Groundlings, Reubens had a go for Saturday Night Live which didn’t happen. After this, he...

An official YouTube channel dedicated to the classic sitcom The Munsters and the franchise it spawned was launched three years ago, and as the years have gone by a whole lot of clips from the 1964 – 1966 show have been added to that channel. But now Universal has decided to go ahead and share a couple full movies on there as well: The Munsters’ Revenge from 1981 and Here Come the Munsters from 1995. Not only can both of those movies be viewed on the The Munsters channel, but they’re both embedded at the bottom of this article as well!
Directed by Don Weis from a script by Arthur Alsberg and Don Nelson, The Munsters’ Revenge reunites original sitcom stars Fred Gwynne, Yvonne De Carlo, and Al Lewis. The movie shows us what happens when Mad Dr. Diablo sends robot doubles of Herman and Grandpa Munster to steal art.

Paul Reubens is being remembered by many in Hollywood, including some of his nearest and dearest, following his death on Sunday from cancer at the age of 70.
S. Epatha Merkerson worked alongside Reubens in the hit children’s series Pee-Wee’s Playhouse which ran from 1986 to 1990. Merkerson, who currently stars in the hit Dick Wolf series for NBC Chicago Med, portrayed Reba the Mail Lady in 16 episodes.

“I always called him Pablo. I will truly miss my friend,” Merkerson told Deadline via email about Reubens on Monday. “We met at my audition for Pee-wee’s Playhouse. I did not know of the character…my nephew Sean told me who he was. However, when I walked into the audition I was introduced to a man named Paul Reubens in cut-off jeans, with long hair and a goatee. He looked like a 60s reject!

"Pee-wee's Playhouse" was a staple of television from 1986-1990, both for kids who loved the silly talking chair, puppets, and silly scenarios, and for adults who loved the tongue-in-cheek humor. Sadly, Paul Reubens, who hosted the show as Pee-wee Herman, has died at the age of 70. The beloved comedian had a huge career, including roles in "The Blacklist," "Portlandia," "The Smurfs," "Pushing Daisies," "Blow," and the movie "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," as well as a very meta appearance in "What We Do in the Shadows." Still, his Pee-wee Herman persona is what Reubens is best known for, returning to the role in 2016 in "Pee-wee's Big Holiday," which he also wrote and produced.
"Pee-wee's Playhouse" is remembered as being incredibly smart and innovative for a children's show and boasted some big acting names like S. Epatha Merkerson, Phil Hartman, and Laurence Fishburne. There were a lot of rather mature jokes in there,...

Paul Reubens, who disappeared behind a tight gray suit and bright red bow tie to create and star as the awkward man-child Pee-wee Herman onstage, on a groundbreaking kids TV show and on the big screen, has died. He was 70.

Cindy Williams, the energetic actress who appeared in a pair of Oscar best picture nominees before starring as the idealistic Shirley Feeney on the beloved ABC sitcom Laverne & Shirley, has died. She was 75.
Williams died in Los Angeles on Wednesday after a brief illness, her children, Zak and Emily Hudson, said in a statement released Monday.
“The passing of our kind, hilarious mother, Cindy Williams, has brought us insurmountable sadness that could never truly be expressed,” the statement said. “Knowing and loving her has been our joy and privilege. If you’ve sat down and watched the delightful absurdity that is “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” then you enjoy the screenwriting team of Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo. The two stars and writers of that film sat down with the New York Times to discuss the film, and the inspiration their first outing, 2011’s “Bridesmaids” had on it.
“Bridesmaids” itself was originally written to be far more absurdist, according to the pair. “When we were running around to find Lillian [the bride, played by Maya Rudolph], we were going to find a woman lying on the ground. We’re like, “It’s Lillian — she’s dead!” And then we were like, “Oh wait — it’s not Lillian.” And then we just keep running,” said Wiig.
In fact, much of how they saw the character of Lillian’s mother, played by Lynne Marie Stewart, was similar to how the characters of Barb and Star were written.

A peculiar thing happened after “Bridesmaids” premiered a decade ago and became an undeniable box office smash. Hot takes popped up around every corner of the internet and across the pages of newspapers and magazines, offering up one astute observation: Women can be funny!
It was especially confusing for Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, who wrote the Oscar-nominated screenplay and had long admired the likes of Gilda Radner, Goldie Hawn, Carol Burnett and Lily Tomlin — comedians who knew their way around a joke while also, you know, happening to be female.
And yet, the reaction to “Bridesmaids” — a “chick flick” starring Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Melissa McCarthy that’s equal parts raunchy, smart and touching — presented that staggering conclusion with a reverence usually reserved for scientific breakthroughs.
“As a genre, there’s comedy and then there’s female comedy,” Mumolo recalls. “We didn’t know that until ‘Bridesmaids’ came out.

“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”‘s 13th season is getting topical with episodes that take on the Time’s Up movement against sexual harassment, as well as the broader Women’s March for female rights and gay pride.

When “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia” returns Wednesday, September 5, we’ll see the show do something it’s only rarely done in the past: be sincere. In an episode from Season 13, previewed for critics at the Television Critics Association press tour Friday, Frank (Danny Devito) learns to be more accepting of Mac’s (Rob McElhenney) sexuality, which Mac explores with a jaw-dropping modern dance performance.
The episode, entitled “Mac Finds His Pride” is all part of the strategy for the new batch of episodes, which will feature less of Dennis (Glenn Howerton) following Howerton’s decision at the end of Season 12 to step back a bit from the long-running FX comedy.
Dennis is not completely absent from the season — “he’s in the majority of [episodes],” executive producer/star Charlie Day said — but more episodes will focus on other characters, including what’s billed as an “all-female reboot” of the...

Don’t look to today’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia tweets — with new key art and a teaser promo — for answers on whether Glenn Howerton’s Dennis will be on the show when it returns September 5 for Season 13 on Fxx.
But there are clues on this Friday the 13th. Sorta.
In the new key art, Sunny‘s Charlie Day, Rob McElhenney, Danny DeVito and Kaitlin Olson are pictured, in slasher-flick style, running terrified from a secluded cabin. In the background, on the cabin porch, is an ax-wielding, hockeymask-wearing maniac. Could the Jason Voorhees wannabe be the gang’s Dennis?
Very possibly, given Dennis’ well-established sociopathic tendencies and serial killer fantasies. But more to the point, does his background placement signal a reduction in Howerton’s presence on the comedy? The actor’s NBC sitcom A.P. Bio was renewed in May for a second season.

The cast of The CW’s Black Lightning series has grown by one today, as Deadline brings word that Edwina Findley has secured a recurring role opposite Cress Williams.
Best known for her involvement in AMC’s companion series, Fear The Walking Dead, Findley will play the part of Tori, the “beautiful and cunning younger sister to Tobias Whale (Marvin ‘Krondon’ Jones III). Tori’s charming nature is just a facade as she can be just as deadly as Tobias, an exciting threat to the people of Freeland.”
Salim Akil, showrunner and executive producer on Black Lightning, is clearly a big fan of Findley’s casting, telling Deadline that “Edwina is a fantastic talent, and I am so excited she is joining us.”
Anchored by Jefferson Pierce (Williams), Black Lightning tells the tale of a retired crime-fighter who is unknowingly thrust back into the spotlight as a wanted vigilante.

Last year, Warner Bros. treated us with the awesome Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders, which saw the likes of Adam West, Burt Ward and Julie Newmar reprise their roles of Batman, Robin and Catwoman, respectively. Being essentially the beginning to a fourth season we never received, it surpassed expectations by retaining the feel of the classic 1960’s television series, while also featuring grandiose action scenes that could’ve never been accomplished on the budget of the show.
Having said that, we’re thrilled to see that its sequel, Batman vs. Two-Face, looks like it may be even better. In addition to the return of the aforementioned actors, expect William Shatner to lend his pipes to the dichotomous Harvey Dent, a character who never actually appeared on the TV show itself during its original run.

The CW’s small-screen take on DC Comics superhero Black Lightning has cast British actress Christine Adams in the final lead role of the series, Lynn Stewart. She’ll be joining Cress Williams as the former titular crime-fighter, as well as Nafessa Williams and China Anne McLain as his daughters, Anissa and Jennifer – who will most likely suit up as Thunder and Lightning at some point as the show progresses.
In the comics, Lynn is Jefferson’s ex-wife, though the two maintain a good relationship. It’s not clear if that’ll carry over to the series or not, but we do know this version of the character is described as a woman “who exudes confidence and intelligence. Although she’s got a mischievous side, she’s not one to be trifled with when it comes to family.”

Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton, and Charlie Day have never been afraid to get a little meta with “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” From “The Gang Recycles Their Trash” (in which plot points from previous episodes were repurposed) to “The Gang Misses the Boat” (a Season 10 episode where the people of Paddy’s Pub decide they’ve drifted too far from their roots), episodes crop up where the “It’s Always Sunny” gang is doing more than comment on society: They’re talking about themselves.
What could come across as unappealingly egocentric is instead charmingly apt considering “Sunny” is all about selfish assholes, and the topic of this week’s episode channels such narcissistic villainy toward a new purpose: highlighting the difference between half-hour comedies and manipulative sitcoms. Similar to the brilliant deconstruction of classic sitcom structuring in “The Gang Tries Desperately to Win an Award” (the lighting! the romantic pairings!

Believe it or not, we’re about to receive our fourth animated movie headlined by a certain masked hero this year when Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders arrives this fall. With the help of a well-known Hollywood actor, parents may start understanding a little better, the clever Funny or Die video of the moment is 'Parent News With Fred Willard', where Willard and his co-anchor (played by Lynne Marie Stewart) report on the fads that are consuming the young people of today. Topics teased in the videos include "How to do a Netflix" and "What does Mdma stand for? It's not what I thought it was!" However, the majority of the episode consists of a report on the "Bank of Americard", which our seniors think is the only alternative to writing checks. It's a mix of clueless parents, senile old people, and, at least in my mind, the behind-the-times attitude for which the New York Times is often attitude. With all these elements, Parent News With Fred Willard, which is directed by a Funny or Die contributor who just...

Did this week’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia bring us the series’ most horrific twist yet? That’s a heavy charge for a show full of characters whose plots routinely ruin lives or go outside the boundaries of good taste, but Frank’s (Danny Devito) endgame in Thursday’s episode wreaks havoc even on the inflappable Dennis (Glenn Howerton). Story: ‘It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' Cast Previews 'Darker' Season 8 The latest episode begins with the revelation that Charlie’s mom (Lynne Marie Stewart) has lung cancer. She’s turned to a healer named Dr. Jinx (played by Sean Combs in a guest role) for

Unless you live in New York or Los Angeles, chances are you weren't able to see Pee-wee Herman return to the theater. No, not That theater. "The theater" as in Broadway. Paul Reubens brought back his famous Pee-wee character in 2010 for The Pee-Wee Herman Show on Broadway, which premiered last January in Los Angeles and will conclude its New York Broadway run on January 2. HBO announced Tuesday that, immediately following the end of the run, they'll shoot the production to air sometime in 2011. So if you weren't able to go out and see Pee-wee, Miss Yvonne, Cowboy Curtis, Chairy, Jambi and the rest, you'll soon get your chance. Check out a montage from the show, read the press release and more after the break. Here's what Nancy Geller, senior vice president of HBO Original Programming, said in a press release. The hipster audience files into the Stephen Sondheim Theatre and doesn't get antsy when the curtain rises nearly a half hour late because of technical difficulties.
This is an audience raised on "Pee-wee's Playhouse" on TV, then on the DVDs. And there are a few, like my friend and I, who had watched his shows and movies as moms, and found him one of the only entertainers, ostensibly for children, who invariably cracked us up.
That sensibility remains, and for those who loved Chairry, Cowboy Curtis and Jambi, this show is a silly, yet outrageously fun reunion. Paul Reubens, as Pee-wee, miraculously looks no different from when his sweet and wacky show was on TV and racked up 15 Emmy Awards during its five-year run. Now that sweet and wacky show is on Broadway as "The Pee-wee Herman Show" until Jan. 2.

I know you’re excited, but what am I? The producers of The Pee-wee Herman Show have released the official poster for the limited-run production, which begins performances at Broadway’s Stephen Sondheim Theatre on Oct. 26 in advance of an official Nov. 11 opening. EW’s Adam B. Vary was somewhat mixed in his review of the version of the show that played in L.A. earlier this year. He gushed about “that initial rush of childlike joy” on seeing Pee-wee performing again but ultimately worried that “day-glo nostalgia is all that he has left to offer.”

Howdy Interweb. I’m Matt Cohen, and I am a theater snob.
Okay, to be honest, I’m far from it. In my twenty-five years on this planet, most of my time has been spent deep in the world of comics, comedy and movies - with an emphasis on movies. Since before I can remember, my life revolved around all things cinematic, and this has not changed with time. I was never a musical theatre fan, and the only times I’ve gone have been mandatory, either by family or school. As far as “straight” plays, I think I’ve seen less than five performed in my life. And sure, I love comedy (specifically long form Improv, if ya please), but other then the occasional jaunt to the Upright Citizens Brigade, I don’t get out to the “Theater” much. It comes down to a general lack of interest in what’s being performed.

In each episode of the Emmy-winning Saturday morning CBS series "Pee-wee's Playhouse" (1986–91), there was a "secret word of the day." When someone uttered it, everyone else would scream. If there's a secret word for the show's star, Paul Reubens, right now, it would be "comeback."The actor has spent the past year prepping his brand-new stage show, "The Pee-wee Herman Show," running through Feb. 7 at Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles. The ambitious production features 11 actors and 20 puppets—a first for Reubens, who on his series relied on the magic of editing to bring puppets like Pterri, Chairry, Conky, Globey, and Magic Screen to life. Reubens says the tension and anxiety of creating the live show are palpable, and he has one question on his mind: Are the puppets going to perform?"This show is in many ways like the series, except we never did that live," says Reubens. "A...

Pee-wee Herman creator Paul Reubens wants ‘Playhouse’ movie, reintroduce character to new generation
Peace, love, jobs, forget all that stuff. What the world needs now, is Pee-wee, sweet Pee-wee.
In a recent interview with the AP, Paul Reubens, better known as Pee-wee Herman, talked about his plans to reintroduce his iconic character back into society. His first step? His live stage show The Pee-Wee Herman Show. His second step? A feature-length film:
“Well, you know, I really want to make a movie version of The Playhouse, my Saturday morning kid show. [The live show] seemed like a great way to do it: Reintroduce it, get back out there, introduce Pee-wee to the new generation that didn’t know about it,” he said.
His Saturday morning TV show, Pee-wee’s Playhouse, was canned in 1991 when Reubens was arrested for indecent exposure.
The Pee-wee Herman Show will run at the Club Nokia theater in Los Angeles from January 12th to February 7th. It will feature 20 puppets, along with many original cast members,...

Actor Paul Reubens is bringing his trademark character, Pee-wee Herman, and his playhouse full of friends back to their roots. Unfortunately, unless you live in Southern California, you may not be able to see them.
The Pee-wee Herman Show was a Los Angeles stage show in the early 1980s. It resembled the Saturday morning kids show that followed but the original concept was more of an adult parody of classic children's programming. Following appearances on late-night TV, Reubens' Pee-wee character became so popular that he was given his own family-friendly feature film, Pee-wee's Big Adventure.
The success of the movie paved the way for the Pee-wee's Playhouse TV series. Budgeted at $325,000 an episode, the show garnered 22 Emmy Awards during its five year run. Aside from Reubens, the series features Phil Hartman, Laurence Fishburne, S. Epatha Merkerson, Shirley Stoler, George McGrath, Alison Mork, John Paragon, William Marshall, Suzanne Kent, Lynne Marie Stewart,...
