My So-Called High School Rank
HBO Original documentary film My So-called High School Rank, produced and directed by Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg (HBO’s “Marathon: The Patriots Day Bombing”), debuts Tuesday, November 29 (9:00-10:45 p.m. Et/Pt) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.
My So-called High School Rank chronicles the creation of a musical theater production at Granite Bay High School in Sacramento, CA, inspired by students’ stories of the constant pressures to achieve a top-rank in every part of their lives to get ahead in today’s fierce college admissions process.
In an uncanny case of art anticipating real life, Granite Bay’s musical “Ranked” was in the works weeks before Rick Singer and the “Varsity Blues” scandal made headlines in 2019. The play’s apt timing and subject matter speak to a culture where many students feel driven to succeed at any cost.

Don’t expect any drive-in screenings, virtual screenings, mask mandates or reduced capacity theaters at the 30th annual Hamptons Intl. Film Festival. This year’s edition will look and feel as it did way back in 2019.
The Long Island-based fest, which runs Oct. 7-16, will screen 69 feature films and 51 shorts that are 54 female-directed and represent 34 countries from around the world.
Also back at Hiff are a bevy of fancy cocktail hours and the fest’s Rowdy Talks series, which will include a conversation with director, screenwriter and producer Chris Columbus.
New this year? The festival will run over 10 days.
“Last year, we were seven days instead of our typical five,” says Hiff artistic director David Nugent. “We did that to see if people would be interested in coming to see films midweek and they were, so we decided to expand.”

Ketanji Brown Jackson’s June 30 swearing-in as the first Black woman on the Supreme Court was historic and inspiring. While her ascendance just six days after the court’s overturn of Roe v. In 2018, I produced a documentary called Reversing Roe that explored the perilous state of reproductive rights in America. Exclusive: Filmmakers Ricki Stern and Anne Lundberg have seen this day coming. For a long time.
Their 2108 Netflix documentary Reversing Roe examined how right-wing activists, politicians and jurists were steadily chipping away at abortion rights across the country, with the goal of eventually overturning Roe v. Wade. Today it happened, in a 6-3 Supreme Court decision that tossed out Roe, permitting states to ban or severely restrict abortion.
“I think there was no surprise,” Stern said in an interview with Deadline after the ruling was announced. She said she felt “just absolute sadness and just despair, truly, because it’s the beginning of many, many kinds of Supreme Court decisions that, personally, I think are going to set us back. And as the film illustrates, this is a very politically charged issue, abortion rights. This is really about power and [ignores] the lives of many women who are going to be hurt by this decision.

Documentary filmmaker Dawn Porter considers Title IX, anti-gender discrimination legislation passed by Congress in 1972, as “one of the most misunderstood civil rights laws” and is setting out to change that with “Fifty/50,” a four-part ESPN docuseries that she is executive producing and co-directing.
On Oct. 19, she is slated to unveil a first look at “Fifty/50” during a conversation with fellow executive producer Allison Glock and Hannah Storm at the espnW: Women + Sports Summit in La Jolla, Calif.
“Fifty/50,” which she is co-directing with Nicole Newnham (“Crip Camp), celebrates the 50th anniversary of Title IX while also exploring the current struggle to maintain and evolve the 1972 law that forbids discrimination based on gender.
Prior to 1972, gender discrimination was commonplace in education and athletics. Physical activity for girls and women was cast as unfeminine, and while schools poured money and other resources into programs for male students, budding female athletes were left to fend for themselves.

In the sixth episode of Jehane Noujaim and Karim Amer’s docuseries “The Vow,” Sarah Edmondson, a whistleblower who was once in the inner-circle of Nxivm and also a part of its master-slave subgroup Dos, is asked outright if she is a victim. Although she answers quickly in the affirmative, she also makes it clear that she made choices during her time working with the organization. Some of these choices simply kept her involved, while others were direct recruitment of other young women. To some, this may paint her in the colors of someone more culpable than coerced.
But the truth is much more complicated. And what Noujaim and Amer endeavor to do with their nine-part HBO docuseries is peel back the layers of the psychology of not only the women who found themselves in this organization that purported to be one of self-improvement, but also of its founder and high-ranking officials,...

On Aug. 9 and Aug. 10, Lifetime will air its new docuseries Surviving Jeffrey Epstein. Those airdates are significant, as Epstein, the disgraced financier and accused sex offender, was found dead in his jail cell on Aug. 10, 2019. And this story, like the network's hit Surviving R. Kelly before it, focuses on those who survived the sexual assaults perpetrated by Epstein and those in his inner circle. The most prominent figure in his inner circle? Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein's former girlfriend accused of grooming women, who was arrested on July 2.
Bob Friedman, one of the series's executive producers, told journalists covering this summer's all-virtual Television Critics Association press tour that it was important to air this two-night, four-hour event on the anniversary of Epstein's demise - especially because "the story that we've told has been pretty much in the survivors' own words."

Lifetime has released a preview of its forthcoming documentary series “Surviving Jeffrey Epstein,” a lengthy deep dive into deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The show will premiere its first episode on the eve of the anniversary of the former billionaire’s death in his jail cell, where he was awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges, and the series arrives on the heels of the recent arrest of Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s former business partner and alleged accomplice. The FBI arrested Maxwell on July 2 on charges of enticement of minors, sex trafficking of children, and perjury. According to the show’s directors and producers, who spoke during a Lifetime TCA panel Monday, the team continued filming throughout the last few weeks and delivered the final cut on Sunday.

Ghislaine Maxwell nearly survived the production window for “Surviving Jeffrey Epstein” without being arrested for allegedly assisting the disgraced and deceased financier in his sex trafficking ring.
Maxwell was arrested on July 2, one month to the day before the Lifetime docuseries had to shut down production in order to make its premiere date. The arrest completely changed the fourth and final episode of “Surviving Jeffrey Epstein.”
“It built out a fourth episode, in a way, that we had intended to be very different,” Ricki Stern, who co-directed the docuseries with Annie Sundberg, said during the show’s virtual presentation at the Summer Ctam tour Monday. “[Maxwell’s arrest] really becomes the fourth episode.”

Lifetime was always keen for its Surviving Jeffrey Epstein docu-series, which looks at the case of the convicted felon through the eyes of the victims, to air around the one year anniversary of his death.
What the network and the filmmakers, Anne Sundberg and Ricki Stern, didn’t expect was that his alleged co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell would be arrested a month before its premiere.
This forced the team, which included producers Bungalow Media + Entertainment, to refocus the fourth hour of the series, which will air across two nights on August 9 and 10, to include the latest developments.
“It was crazy timing as we were coming to the finish line as the arrest happened. We had a different form of conclusion,” said Sundberg. “This story is not over.”

Lifetime released the first trailer for the next iteration of its “Surviving” docuseries, “Surviving Jeffrey Epstein,” promising to expose new secrets from some of the women who say they were abused by him.
The four-hour doc investigates the billionaire New York financier who was accused of using his connections to the rich and famous to shield his predatory and abusive behavior with young girls. Featuring women who describe how Epstein lured underaged girls, the doc delves into the reality the survivors must now face in the wake of Epstein’s suicide behind bars.
The one-minute trailer gives a brief look at the experiences some women say they had at the hands of Epstein. One describes being “a human baton, passed from one person to another,” while another woman talks of being “groomed” to be a “personal sex slave.” A third survivor added: “The more I kept trying to resist, the more fun he was having.

Every year, documentaries that examine crimes are made. Some, such as Ezra Edelman’s “O.J.: Made in America,” Joshua Rofe’s “Lorena” and most recently Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg’s “The Preppy Murder: Death in Central Park,” study a single crime decades after the fact in hopes of establishing a greater clarity and understanding of traumatic events.
But some crimes against humanity deserve immediate dissection and magnification, including mass shootings, sexual abuse and data-mining manipulation. Each is an offense that has directly and indirectly affected millions of Americans in recent years and each is an offense that continues to play out in our society. In these cases, documentarians take on crimes that need immediate absorption and contemplation.
Just four days after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb. 14, 2018, Emily Taguchi and Jake Lefferman traveled to Parkland, Fla., on assignment for ABC’s “Nightline.” Initially the duo...

Lifetime is making a followup documentary to “Surviving R. Kelly,” as well a new docuseries on Jeffrey Epstein called “Surviving Jeffrey Epstein.”
“Surviving Jeffrey Epstein” will center on the billionaire New York financier, who was arrested earlier this month. He was charged with sex trafficking by federal prosecutors, who said that Epstein sexually abused dozens of underage girls and paid many of them to recruit others. He was denied bail last week.
Since Epstein’s arrest, Labor Secretary Alex Acosta resigned after defending the plea deal he struck with Epstein as a federal prosecutor. Over a decade ago, Epstein pleaded guilty in Florida to soliciting a minor for prostitution. He served 13 months of an 18-month sentence and was released in 2009.

Two of the season’s most reliable groups when it comes to forecasting the eventual Academy Awards nominees for Documentary Feature have now announced the shortlists for their own programs. The International Documentary Association (Ida) and Doc NYC, one of the largest documentary film festivals in the country, both boast great track records with either nominating, awarding and/or screening major contenders for the Oscars in recent years.
Doc NYC, who announced a short list of 15 titles for their 2018 festival which runs from November 8th to 15th, has overlapped their own short list with the academy’s short list with 9 to 10 titles in each of the last five years. In addition, they’ve included 4 to 5 titles that went on to be Oscar-nominated and in the last seven years they’ve screened the documentary that won the Academy Award.

Doc NYC, America’s largest documentary festival, has revealed its seventh annual 15-film Short List of likely awards contenders along with its opening-night selection, Telluride and Toronto favorite “The Biggest Little Farm”, cinematographer John Chester’s poignant environmental portrait of life on a new California farm. The festival runs November 8 – 15.
Thom Powers, Doc NYC’s artistic director as well as documentary programmer for the Toronto International Film festival, oversees curation of the Short List of films that may be in the running for the Academy Award for Best Documentary feature. This year contains a spectrum of funders and distributors, including three from Netflix, three from his own Tiff selection and two from HBO.
Historically, most Doc NYC picks do land on the Academy’s official 15-film Oscar Short List. For the past five years, the Short List has had nine to 10 titles overlap, and four to five titles that were Oscar nominated.

The title “Reversing Roe” may be unsettling (if not a bit alarmist), but the possibility of a Roe V. Wade reversal unfortunately became very real once Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement from the United States Supreme Court in June. Just in time, the Oscar-nominated director/producer team Annie Sundberg and Ricki Stern (“The Devil Came on Horseback”) have teamed up once again for a look back at the landmark Supreme Court decision, and the factors that led to the current political climate — and its threat to reproductive rights.
Taking a somewhat neutral approach to its controversial subject matter, “Reversing Roe” aims to help audiences understand what’s at stake if Roe V. Wade were to be overturned, and uncover the motivations of both sides. In his B-grade review of the film, IndieWire’s David Ehrlich wrote that the film “sharply dissects the process by which abortion soured from a...

The long, contentious fight over abortion rights is the focus of the upcoming Netflix documentary, Reversing Roe.
The trailer notably arrives the same day that confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh begin. The clip touches on the vacancy left by Justice Anthony Kennedy, a longtime swing vote, who many believed was the last blockade to a succesful challenge to overturn Roe vs. Wade.
Reversing Roe will chronicle the history of abortion in America and explore the ideological arguments and political efforts to both keep and reverse the landmark 1973 case.

Reversing Roe, a timely documentary about the history of the abortion debate, explores the politicization of the issue.
The first trailer, debuting exclusively here at The Hollywood Reporter, explores the lasting effects and debate surrounding the 1973 decision Roe v. Wade, in which unduly restrictive state regulation of abortion was ruled unconstitutional.
The film, which premiered at Telluride, is helmed by Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg, and has the backing of notable names including Sen. Wendy Davis and exec producer Eva Longoria, who attended the festival premiere.

Like any abortion documentary worth the time to watch, Ricki Stern and Anne Sundberg’s “Reversing Roe” doesn’t explicitly argue for or against a woman’s right to choose. And while there’s little doubt that Stern and Sundberg could make a persuasive case for reproductive rights, as several interview subjects do, it’s only so valuable to preach to the choir — especially when a film is released into the apolitical cyberspace of Netflix rather than a handful of arthouse theaters in America’s largest and most liberal cities.
Ultimately, “Reversing Roe” is a productive contribution to its ever-growing genre because it sharply dissects the process by which abortion soured from a private medical issue to a public political one. If witnessing the cynical opportunism with which Jerry Falwell stirred evangelical Christians into a Republican movement, or watching the Operation Truth videos in which fundamentalist zealots try to impose their religious beliefs,...

While most fall film festivals are fairly evenly spaced out as to not step on each other’s toes, that’s not the case when it comes to Telluride Film Festival, which takes place during the first weekend of Venice Film Festival. As is the case every year, they’ve unveiled their lineup just before the festival kicks off, and it includes a number of major world premieres, including Destroyer, Boy Erased, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, The Front Runner, The Old Man & the Gun, as well as a handful of Venice premieres, including Roma, The Favourite, First Man, Non-Fiction, Peterloo, and, most-anticipated of all, Orson Welles’ The Other Side of the Wind.
Also in the lineup is a surprise film, Sebastián Silva’s Fistful of Dirt, which he discussed way back in 2009. “I won a big cash prize in Poland with The Maid. The money is to make...

This year’s star-studded Telluride Film Festival is mere hours from kicking off in the mountains of Colorado, and as is the annual event’s tradition, it has just now revealed its enviable lineup. As usual, this year’s fest features a range of buzzy fall season movies, including many films also premiering in Venice and Toronto as well as others resurfacing from earlier in the year, just in time for awards season. The festival will also honor Cuarón, Emma Stone, and Rithy Panh as part of their long-running tributes section.

Across the world’s major cities, marathons hold a special resonance with people as local communities unite – be they runners participating in the event or bystanders yelling on their support – to overcome the physical, mental and emotional toil that comes with hand-in-hand with pounding the pavements for 26.2 miles.
Three years ago, in what was supposed to be a communal day to remember, a terrorist attacked rocked the city of Boston killing six and leaving hundreds of people – both runners and those supporters lining the sidewalks – badly injured. And though the tragic events that transpired in April of 2013 will serve as the basis for two Hollywood feature films in the form of Boston Strong and this year’s Patriots Day, the latter of which is led by Deepwater Horizon star Mark Wahlberg, HBO’s upcoming documentary Marathon: The Patriots Day Bombing is designed to chronicle the journey of those greatly affected...

It was 2013 and they stood near the finish line on a crisp April afternoon: Mothers and children, newlyweds, brothers, all cheering on friends and family who were running in the Boston Marathon. Then the unthinkable happened: Two bombs exploded, killing three people and wounding more than 250 others at the marathon in what the nation and the world would soon learn was a terrorist attack - on U.S. soil. On Nov. 21, HBO will debut Marathon: The Patriots Day Bombing, a documentary that details the emotional and physical challenges survivors have faced ever since. October is stacked with some of the year’s best films, both in wide release and limited, many slowly expanding through November, and we have a record-setting 20 recommendations for the month. The conclusion of Tiff and Venice also brought a batch of worthwhile premieres, some of which one will be able to see this month.
To note, after limited September debuts, the recommended Sicario and The Walk will both be opening wide on October 2nd and 9th, respectively. There’s also a few notable releases we weren’t fans of, including Love (10/30) and Truth (10/16). Then there’s some on our radar that would make for worthwhile matinees: Sherpa (10/2), (T)error (10/7), The Final Girls (10/9), Meadowland (10/16) and Rock the Kasbah (10/23). We should also make a note that Paul Thomas Anderson‘s new short film Junun will start streaming at midnight on October 9th at Mubi.
