Cher famously recorded a version of “Walking in Memphis” for her 1995 album, It’s a Man’s World,...

10 Bob Dylan Movies To Watch Before A Complete Unknown
Image
Timothée Chalamet has been gaining widespread acclaim for his performance as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, which will surely lead to many people discovering the enigmatic folk singer for the very first time. While Dylan has always been an inscrutable enigma wrapped up in a mystery, plenty of feature films, documentaries, and unusual releases give insight into his life as an artist and pop culture icon. Some Dylan films lay the groundwork to understand his status as the voice of his generation during the 1960s, while others will provide context for the challenges of his later career.

As a filmmaker in his own right, Dylan has been involved in many films that play with or recontextualize his legacy as an elder statesman of rock ‘n’ roll. Dylan has been the subject of incredible music biopics that experiment with the genre itself as well as mockumentaries where he outright lies...

Groundbreaking Generative Documentary About Musician Brian Eno Is Also Generating Oscar Buzz
Image
Eno is the world’s first generative feature film.

“I tell people, ‘The film is different every time,’” explains director Gary Hustwit. “And they always say, ‘What do you mean? I don’t understand!’ So the best way to explain it is that each iteration of the film is 100 percent unique, because there are things being created for that iteration that will never occur again.”

Hustwit admits the idea for a generative documentary was the result of boredom — at repeated screenings of his own films.

“You go on a 50-city tour, and every time you hit ‘play,’ you then go to a bar or something because you can’t watch the film anymore. I’ve seen it too many times. I just want to be surprised by the movie, like the audience. We’re making digital files now. There’s no film. There’s no celluloid. We’re...

David Letterman Thinks Bob Dylan Bombed on His Show Out of Spite
Image
Bob Dylan is on a lot of people’s minds these days thanks to the upcoming biopic A Complete Unknown, which chronicles Dylan’s early rise in the folk music scene, up until he decided to “go electric” in 1965 (sadly it ends before we see him “go Christmas album” in 2009).

In light of all the recent Dylan chatter, retired talk show host/occasional jury candidate David Letterman took to YouTube to share his thoughts about the legendary musician. Specifically, Letterman talked about the time that Dylan tanked a performance on his show, possibly on purpose.

In 1992, just a year before he hopped over to CBS, Letterman celebrated 10 years of NBC’s Late Night program with a lavish anniversary special held at Radio City Musical Hall. In addition to various clips and an appearance from Bill Murray, the event featured “special musical guest” Bob Dylan and an “all-star band.”

The “supergroup...

‘Save the Children,’ Long-Lost ’70s Concert Film With the Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye, Staple Singers and Other Black Superstars, Gets a Netflix Rebirth
Image
“Save the Children,” an early ’70s concert film featuring many of that era’s biggest names in Black music, was in need of some saving itself. Although the documentary featured iconic stars like the Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield and Bill Withers, the movie disappeared completely off the radar after being briefly released to theaters in 1973 by Paramount Pictures, never getting an authorized home-video release, let alone revival screenings. But salvation has come, with Netflix having picked up the doc to make it available to be seen for the first time in a half-century.

The two-hour film documents a concert that was put on in Chicago in 1972 to support Rev. Jesse Jackson’s Operation Push, with an all-star cast of performers that also included the Staple Singers, Roberta Flack, Isaac Hayes, Gladys Knight, the Tempations, Ramsey Lewis, Wilson Pickett, Sammy Davis Jr., Cannonball Adderley and Jerry Butler. Bonnie Raitt on What She Thinks of That Charli Xcx Sample
Image
One of the year’s least expected samples on a record started with an email. A few months ago, Bonnie Raitt received a note from Bon Iver auteur Justin Vernon. Raitt was already familiar with Vernon, especially after he covered her 1991 standard “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” with a bit of “Nick of Time” tacked on, a dozen years back. This time, Vernon was circling back to the latter song, but in a very different way.

As Raitt recalls, “Justin said, ‘I’m working with this artist you may or may not know,...

Another Last Waltz: Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, and More Remember Robbie Robertson at L.A. Concert

Let’s start at the end.

“We love you, Robbie!” Mavis Staples exclaimed. “We love you!”

Late Thursday night in Los Angeles, a few minutes shy of midnight, the soul-stirring vocalist had the crowd at the Forum on their feet. Staples had just performed “The Weight” onstage with Bob Weir, Phish frontman Trey Anastasio, and an all-star band for Life Is a Carnival: A Musical Celebration of Robbie Robertson, a tribute show — produced by moment-makers Blackbird Presents — that honored the Band’s guitarist, collaborator of Bob Dylan, and songwriter who...

Martin Scorsese to direct Robbie Robertson tribute concert film
Image
It’s one last waltz for Robbie and Marty.

Variety reports that Martin Scorsese is directing the filming of a tribute concert dedicated to his late friend and collaborator Robbie Robertson for a concert film. The Blackbird Presents (Outlaw Music Festival)-produced concert, called “Life Is a Carnival: A Musical Celebration of Robbie Robertson,” will take place Thursday at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. Plans for the release of the future film have not been set.

Robertson, the legendary musician and songwriter best known for his work with the legendary roots rock outfit The Band, died in 2023 at age 80. His relationship with Scorsese went back to the 1970s, when Scorsese directed “The Last Waltz,” the 1978 star-studded concert film commemorating The Band’s final performance. Robertson then worked as a composer, music supervisor, or consultant on many of Scorsese’s films, including “Raging Bull,” “The Color of Money,” “Casino,” and “The Irishman.

Martin Scorsese to Direct Film of Robbie Robertson Tribute Concert
Image
Martin Scorsese will direct the filming of a Robbie Robertson tribute concert in L.A. Thursday night for a future release, it was announced Tuesday morning.

The filming of “Life Is A Carnival: A Musical Celebration Of Robbie Robertson,” a Blackbird Presents production, may provide a kind of bookend to the the first movie Scorsese did with Robertson, when he directed the concert film “The Last Waltz,” which commemorated the last concert the singer-songwriter-guitarist did with his group the Band in 1976.

Prior to the announcement that he would spend the evening overseeing the filming, Scorsese was already serving as one of the executive producers of the concert, along with Jared Levine, Keith Wortman and Scooter Weintraub.

The lineup of artists performing at the show at the Kia Forum Thursday includes Trey Anastasio, Eric Church, Eric Clapton, Warren Haynes, Bruce Hornsby, Jim James, Daniel Lanois, Taj Mahal, Van Morrison, Margo Price,...

It’s not Beyonce, but Jeff Tweedy and Mavis Staples closed out a week of The Late Show’s DNC coverage with a performance of the Staple Singers’ civil rights-era anthem “Freedom Highway.”

The two Chicago legends and frequent collaborators took the stage at the Auditorium Theatre, where Stephen Colbert’s show has been headquartered this week to deliver their updated rendition of the track that was penned to mark the march from Selma to Montgomery in 1965.

As Colbert noted in the introduction, the song was recorded in Chicago nearly 60 years ago,...

Mavis Staples and Jeff Tweedy Perform “Freedom Highway” on Colbert: Watch
Image
The Late Show brought an end to its taping in Chicago, in conjunction with the 2024 Democratic National Convention, in true Windy City fashion by inviting two of beloved Chicagoians to perform: Mavis Staples and Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy.

Delivering a spirited rendition of The Staple Singers’ song, “Freedom Highway” — which was originally recorded in Chicago nearly 60 years ago — Staples and Tweedy brought passion to The Late Night stage, as their backing band provided a tremolo-washed, ‘60s-inspired arrangement. Moving to the groove, Staples particularly shined, singing the lines “March for freedom’s highway/ March each and every day/ Made up my mind and I won’t turn around” with a sense of hard-earned experience.

Watch Staples’ and Tweedy’s performance of “Freedom Highway” below.

Staples is now 85, but going strong. This summer, she released her latest single, “Worthy,” a soulful track with an inventive, funky sound.

How Colbert’s ‘Late Show’ Kept Its Studio Audience Entertained as Biden’s Speech and a Lengthy DNC Night Delayed Airtime
Image
Chicago — Things were pretty quiet around the Auditorium Theatre in downtown Chicago on Tuesday morning — probably no surprise, given how late things went the night before. “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” kicked off a four-night run of live shows from the venue — part of the Roosevelt University campus — with an episode that didn’t get off the air until a little after 1 a.m. Central Time.

That’s perhaps why the Auditorium still seemed a bit dead around lunchtime — save one lone man sitting outside the theater and carrying two big backpacks. Either he was ready to wait for days until he could snag a ticket to the show, or he was a Roosevelt student who had picked that specific spot to sit and scroll his phone for hours.

Beyond that, pedestrians and Roosevelt students strolled past the Auditorium without giving much thought to the major late night talk...

Robbie Robertson Tribute Concert at L.A.’s Forum to Feature Noah Kahan, Eric Clapton, Elvis Costello, Eric Church, Van Morrison and More
Image
Some of the most illustrious names in rock — and other genres — will pay tribute to Robbie Robertson in a celebratory concert at the L.A.-area Kia Forum on Oct. 17, with the musician’s longtime friend and collaborator Martin Scorsese among the executive producers.

The lineup for “Life Is a Carnival: A Musical Celebration of Robbie Robertson” includes some contemporaries who came up with the Band’s late songwriter-guitarist in the ’60s. These include Bobby Weir, Taj Mahal and three artists who appeared with Robertson in the Scorsese-directed 1986 concert documentary “The Last Waltz”: Eric Clapton, Van Morrison and Mavis Staples.

It also includes some musical figures whose stars have risen in the last 15 years or so, like Eric Church, Allison Russell, Nathaniel Rateliff, Margo Price and — a current mainstay of the Billboard album chart’s top 10 — Noah Kahan.

Mostly, though, the roster is full of veteran stars who...

Jack White Joins Conan O’Brien to Play “We’re Going to Be Friends” at Newport Folk Fest: Watch
Image
Jack White made a surprise appearance at Newport Folk Fest on Sunday, joining his friend Conan O’Brien to perform “We’re Going to Be Friends.”

The performance came as part of O’Brien’s collaborative set, billed as “Conan O’Brien & Real Musicians,” which also featured appearances from Nick Lowe, Dawes, Brittany Howard, Nathaniel Rateliff, and Mavis Staples.

White, whose friendship with O’Brien dates back more than two decades, was the final guest of the evening. “We’re Going to Be Friends” was an appropriate song selection, as The White Stripes played the track during O’Brien’s final Late Night talk show episode in 2009 (it also proved to be the final live performance of The White Stripes’ career). The song is also used by O’Brien as the soundtrack for his podcast, Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend.

After their duet of “We’re Going to Be Friends,...

Watch Conan, Jack White Play ‘We’re Going to Be Friends’ at Newport Folk Festival
Image
The final guest during Conan O’Brien’s star-studded Sunday evening set at Newport Folk Festival was his podcast companion and friend Jack White. The pair first delivered a duet of the White Stripes classic “We’re Going to Be Friends,” with White and O’Brien trading verses. White played electric guitar alongside O’Brien on acoustic for the “song about friendship,” per White’s introduction of the track.

The song has a long history with the comedian: It was the last song ever performed on O’Brien’s NBC late-night show,...

Joan Baez Performs ‘America the Beautiful’ to Get Out the Vote
Image
Joan Baez took to Instagram on Sunday to share a video of her performing “America the Beautiful” and encourage folks to get out and vote in the 2024 presidential election.

Sitting in a kitchen, she launched the clip with a sweet laugh before singing the patriotic song while playing an acoustic guitar. In her heartfelt rendition, she changed the original lyrics of “Crown thy good with brotherhood” to “Crown thy good with sisterhood” in support of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris.

“Times are a-changin’ — Let’s crown thy good with sisterhood,...

Watch Hozier Sing ‘The Weight’ With Mavis Staples and Joan Baez at Newport Folk Festival
Image
It wouldn’t be a Newport Folk Festival without Mavis Staples leading an ensemble sing-along of “The Weight.” Staples was not on the bill at this year’s festival, so the crowd roared even louder when she appeared as a special surprise guest during the end of Hozier’s Friday evening headlining set at the festival.

Joined onstage by a slew of singers including Joan Baez (who is only officially at the festival to give a poetry reading), Nathaniel Rateliff, Madison Cunningham, Allison Russell, and more, Staples led the crowd...

“It’s a pick-me-up song — it’s a celebration, and you can’t help but move,” Staples shared in a statement. “Certain songs just cover you, and this...
