Indescribable shapes both alive and otherwise were mixed in disgusting disarray, and close to every known thing were whole worlds of alien, unknown entities. It likewise seemed that all the known things entered into the composition of other unknown things, and vice versa. Foremost among the living objects were great inky, jellyfish monstrosities which flabbily quivered in harmony with the vibrations from the machine.
-H.P. Lovecraft, “From Beyond”
The original 1934 H.P. Lovecraft short story “From Beyond” details the twisted trans-dimensional experiments of one Dr. Crawford Tillinghast, who creates a machine that allows gratuitously excessive pineal gland enhancement. This in itself yields a sensory awakening, wherein Tillinghast and his unnamed best friend (our narrator) find themselves suddenly able to see the aforementioned terrifying translucent creatures from beyond the realms of traditional human perception. Tillinghast tries to set the monstrosities upon his friend, that friend destroys the machine, and Tillinghast...

Stuart Gordons 1986 offering From Beyond was a fantastic film. Its the kind of picture that while dated still holds up for an entertaining viewing today nearly 30 years after release. The script was handled with care Jeffrey Combs juggles reason and random maniacal behavior wonderfully Ken Foree turns in one of his warmest and most appealing performances and Ted Sorel is flat out disconcerting as the vile Dr. Edward Pretorius.

H.P Lovecraft's From Beyond marks the second entry in Director Stuart Gordon's slate of films based on the writer's works. Shout! Factory delivers another cult classic on Blu-ray for the first time packed with extra features and consisting of an Unrated Director's Cut. It's just the sort of royal treatment this piece of 1980's horror history deserves.
Two scientists use a device called the Resonator in an attempt to stimulate the pineal gland. After lead doctor Edward Pretorius (Ted Sorel) experiments on himself, he discovers a side effect is seeing creatures from another dimension. They pull the scientist into their invisible world.
His assistant, Dr. Crawford Tillinghast (Jeffrey Combs), Psychiatric Dr. Katherine McMichaels (Barbara Crampton), and Detective Bubba Brownlee (Ken Foree) return to the house where Pretorius performed his experiment to investigate his disappearance. Stuart Gordon‘s 1985 film, Re-Animator, remains one of the absolute best horror/comedies of the last three decades thanks to its spectacular mix of over the top, extremely bloody shenanigans and blackly comic sense of humor. The creative forces on that film (including Gordon, writer Dennis Paoli, producer Brian Yuzna, stars Barbara Crampton and Jeffrey Combs, and many members of the sfx team) joined together on another film a year later that once again adapted the work of H.P. Lovecraft into an eyeful of a movie. From Beyond never achieved the same levels of popularity or infamy as its predecessor, but it remains a fun, sexy and practical effects-filled romp into the unknown. Scream Factory continues their bid to become the Criterion Collection for genre fans by bringing the uncut From Beyond to Blu-ray for the very first time complete with a beautifully restored picture and loads of special features. Keep...

In 1985, Stuart Gordon co-wrote and directed the delightfully original Re-Animator, based on a serialized story written by H.P. Lovecraft. Released amongst a deluge of derivative slasher films, audiences and critics responded positively, making the film a surprise sleeper hit. The next year, Gordon heard the call of another H.P. Lovecraft story, From Beyond, reuniting him with Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton.
Combs plays Crawford Tillinghast, a scientist who experiments with his partner, Dr. Edward Pretorius (Ted Sorel), on the potential of the human pineal gland. One evening, after a breakthrough in their research, things go horribly awry, landing Tillingham in a local mental hospital where he becomes a patient of Dr. Catherine McMichaels (Barbara Crampton). McMichaels becomes interested in Crawford’s case and takes him back to the house where he was doing his research to help him deal with the trauma he has suffered. Stars: Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton, Ted Sorel, Ken Foree | Written by Stuart Gordon, Brian Yuzna, Dennis Paoli | Directed by Stuart Gordon
It’s fair to say that H.P. Lovecraft was one strange guy, but whether you like his fiction or not he’s shaped most of the horror we see today, especially the tentacled kind. I’m sure we’ve all heard of Cthulhu, he who waits beneath the waves is deep into pop culture now and he’s going nowhere. When it comes to films, especially in the eighties it’s safe to say most people will know of the work of Stuart Gordon in films such as The Re-Animator and From Beyond, just two of the films that brought the Lovecraftian style up to date, or up to date in terms of the eighties at least.

Re-Animator director Stuart Gordon returned a year later with another Hp Lovecraft adaptation, From Beyond. Rob looks back at a great, goo-filled 80s horror…
There's been some discussion that some of weird fiction writer Hp Lovecraft’s more grand ideas would not translate that well onto film or television. That the bizarre horrors that lurk in the dark corners of his universe are better implied or hinted at rather than slapped onto the screen with CGI.
While I, along with other fans, still wonder what Guillermo del Toro’s take on At The Mountains Of Madness might have been like, these ideas need a budget of millions – the grandeur of Cthulhu rising from the ancient city of R'lyeh, which fans have held in their imaginations since the 1930s, would be expensive to replicate. But there are still many Lovecraft myths that would be much cheaper to adapt.
And this is where Stuart Gordon comes in.
