Disparate documentaries reveal turbulent decade from opposite ends of the spectrum Writer-Director Cevin Soling’s new documentary, The Gilligan Manifesto, is garnering interest from distributors because of its unique spin on a classic television series as a commentary on the 1960’s and the Red scare. Currently, he is in post-production on his highly-anticipated film, The Summer of Hate, a documentary that focuses on the summer of 1966, where the Beatles Us tour took an unexpected turn for the worse, and became an integral part of the volatile political landscape in response to comments on religion and as “payback” for their forcing the Gator Bowl in Florida to desegregate two years prior. In 1963, just one year after the Cuban Missile Crisis, radio and television writer Sherwood...

Writer-director Cevin Soling's highly anticipated documentary, The Gilligan Manifesto, is among Showcase Entertainment's newest documentaries on the roster at this year's Afm. Just one year after the Cuban Missile Crisis, radio and television writer Sherwood Schwartz began filming his comedy classic Gilligan's Island, which depicts seven Americans shipwrecked on a deserted island. Soling’s film reveals that this seemingly innocuous sitcom was actually an analogue for a post-apocalyptic world where survivors had to rebuild civilization as this was a major concern during the Cold War where many families had fallout shelters in their homes. What is even more shocking is that the society the castaways create is founded on Marxist Communism. Soling’s revelation was published in the prestigious academic journal, Americana: The Journal of American Popular Culture....

Below is the trailer for the new documenatry Ikland directed by the filmmaking team of Cevin Soling and David Hilbert, which is soon to be released on DVD (both standard and Blu-ray) and which, in effect, puts right a lie that had been perpetrated years ago. In 1972 anthropologist Colin Turnbull investigated the isolated Ugandan tribe the Ik, whom he later wrote about and described as "the worst people in the world." He also stated they were "wholly evil without compassion even for their own children." Some 27 years later, Soling (who read Turnbull's book in the 7th grade) and Hilbert traveled to Uganda to find out the truth, and instead...

A remarkable work of indie craftsmanship. The forgotten people who point the way to the forgotten side of the Western world. Welcome to Ikland, the world of the Ik. The Ik of Northern Uganda were studied twice; the first time by prestigious British anthropologist ColinTurnbull and the second time was by film makers David Hilbert, Cevin D. Soling and the rest of their merry crew. Hilbert is the director and editor .Ikland., which documents Cevin Soling.s trip to northern Uganda to rediscover the lost tribe. Actually, they were not so much lost, as ignored. In the seventh grade, Soling.s junior high school class was given a reading assignment on the Iks. The assignment was based on Turnbull.s accounts that described...
