A classic film that not only endures but continues to inspire half a century later is a true marvel. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, The Wicker Man helped popularize the folk horror genre that continues to flourish with the likes of Midsommar, The Witch, and The Ritual. Its impact extends beyond cinema, from inspiring Radiohead (“Burn the Witch”) and Iron Maiden (“The Wicker Man”) songs to being included in the 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremony.
In the film, Sergeant Neil Howie travels from the mainland to the Scottish island of Summerisle to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. The devout Christian is appalled to learn that the islanders practice a form of paganism characterized by blasphemous beliefs, degeneracy, doublespeak, and peculiar customs. Like The Bride of Frankenstein, the namesake doesn’t show up until the final moments of the film, but it leaves an indelible impression long after the credits roll.

Exclusive: Leslie Mann is set to star as Elvira in Blithe Spirit, the adaptation of the 1941 Noel Coward play that already had Dan Stevens, Isla Fisher and Judi Dench set to star, and Ed Hall to direct the script by Nick Moorcroft, Meg Leonard and Piers Ashworth.
The new film re-imagines the Coward play, as a writer of bestselling crime novels invites an eccentric mystic to his home in hopes of curing a terrible case of writer’s block he encounters as he tries to finish his first screenplay. That block isn’t helped much when the mystic contacts the spirit of his first wife. David Lean directed the first film adaptation of the play in 1945.
Producers are Fisherman’s Friends trio James Spring, Leonard, and Moorcroft, alongside Hilary Bevan Jones, Peter Snell and Tuni Pinnolis. The project is a Fred Films and Powder Keg Pictures production in association with British Lion Films.

Robin Hardy, director of one of the all time great horror films, The Wicker Man has passed on at the age of 86. Born in Surrey, England, Hardy started his career with the National Film Board of Canada, before going on to direct many TV commercials in the UK. At the request of Peter Snell's British Lion Productions, he came on board to direct the 1973 film which starred Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee. Notably, before his own recent passing, Lee described The Wicker Man (known in much of Europe as The Wickerman) as the best film he was ever involved in - this from a man with nearly 300 film and TV credits including many entries in the Hammer Films oeuvre, The Lord of...

Director Robin Hardy and musical director Gary Carpenter remember a descent into paganism that started in a Manhattan hotel room and ended up with the film company rubbishing their own work
Robin Hardy, director
I was making commercials in the Us and doing very well. Then a film company sent the writer Anthony Shaffer out to lure me back to the UK. When I opened my door in Manhattan, he said: "I am with the FBI and we are investigating you to see if you have communist sympathies." It was the first of many jokes.
We spent a weekend devising the plot, about a policeman called Howie who is lured to a Scottish island to investigate a missing girl; he is ultimately sacrificed by the pagan locals to save their apple crop. Paganism gave us lots of ideas, like the little girl being given a frog to put in her throat to stop it hurting.

With its Final Cut out in cinemas this week, we talk to The Wicker Man's director Robin Hardy about the film's continued relevance...
A key moment in British horror filmmaking, The Wicker Man needs little introduction. The disturbing, darkly funny story of a virginal, self-righteous policeman, Sgt Howie (Edward Woodward) and his search for a missing girl on a remote, pagan island, it's an intelligent, measured film to stir the blood. Yet despite the brilliance of its casting - with horror alumni Ingrid Pitt and Christopher Lee in supporting roles - and the precision of its filmmaking, The Wicker Man was subjected to brutal treatment before release, with some 20 minutes hacked from its duration by an unsympathetic studio.
Although much of that footage has been lost forever - popular legend suggests that the negatives now lie buried beneath the M4 motorway - efforts...

The Wicker Tree is due to hit shelves April 24th on DVD and Blu-ray. This movie is a follow-up of sorts to the 1973 cult classic The Wicker Man and Anchor Bay is distributing.
Christopher Lee reprises his role as the mysterious Lord Summerisle in a cameo to bridge the two films, and original director/writer Robin Hardy could not be any happier. This visionary also reunites with producer Peter Snell to create a new tale for audiences to enjoy.
Based on Hardy’s acclaimed 2006 novel “Cowboys for Christ,” The Wicker Tree tells the story of Texas-based singer Beth Boothby (newcomer Brittania Nicol) and her friend Steve Thomson (Henry Garrett, “The Bill,” “Skins”), two born-again Christians who come to Scotland to spread their gospel. When their initial efforts are met with disdain and disinterest, they find comfort in an invitation to sing in Tressock, the border fiefdom owned by Sir Lachlan Morrison (Graham McTavish,...

Opening in theaters January 27th, watch two clips from The Wicker Tree – “Prayer” (featuring Graham McTavish) and “May Queens” (featuring Brittania Nicol). This sequel is written and directed by Robin Hardy as a companion piece to his 1973 classic cult thriller The Wicker Man. A highly entertaining film too I might add, but do yourself a favor and bypass the inferior Nic Cage version from 2006.
Check out the film’s trailer below.

That’s right, my friends. You read that correctly. Anchor Bay recently snagged distribution rights to director Robin Hardy’s “The Wicker Tree”, an official follow-up to his 1973 classic “The Wicker Man”. The idea of a sequel is interesting, though I’m not entirely sure why anyone would want such a thing in the first place. If nothing else, at least it’s not a follow-up to the remake, a film that, despite its inherent awfulness, currently resides in my DVD collection. If you want to know why, take a look at the video embedded below. It’s a hoot. Beware: The clip contains spoilers. Here’s what you can expect from the sequel: “Wicker Tree,” produced by Peter Watson-Wood and Peter Snell’s U.K.-based company British Lion, is based on Hardy’s novel “Cowboys and Christ.” Pic follows two evangelists from Texas, played by Brittania Nicol and Henry Garrett,...

"It was a classic show business ploy for tax purposes, and my gut instinct was to distribute the film in the United States. So I contacted Roger Corman, who was enthusiastic, but he wasn't offering the $300,000 that [the consortium] could get as a tax shelter if they just dumped it. Soon after, Cinefantastique came out with 37 pages of photos, calling it the 'Citizen Kane of horror films.' A group at Tulane University in New Orleans decided to adopt The Wicker...
