The title is a tease. Sex and Broadcasting, Tim K. Smith’s long-overdue documentary on Wfmu -- America’s most celebrated freeform radio station -- isn’t at all sexy. (In fact, the film loudly flaunts the bodacious unsexiness of the Jersey City station’s variously overweight and grizzled DJs.) But Smith's film, which premiered at Doc NYC on Saturday and plays once more this Thursday night, is a funny, woozy, infectiously cheery look at a still-persevering (though struggling) national treasure.

In a time when music subscriptions keep popping up, where programming is streamed through corporate-owned services, and it seems like it's impossible to get a unique, distinct, independent voice, Wmfu has you covered. The New Jersey-based station takes central focus in the upcoming documentary "Sex And Broadcasting," and today we have an exclusive clip from the film. Directed by Tim K. Smith, the documentary profiles the commercial-free, listener-supported Wmfu and the personalities that bring the shows to life and keep the station, which has been running since the 1950s, going. But when a budget crisis arises, station manager Ken Freedman will have to do everything he can to save Wmfu and keep it financially viable. If you didn't even know this station existed, the scene below gives a pretty great idea of exactly the kind of audience Wmfu has cultivated over the years. "Sex And Broadcasting" is now screening at Doc NYC.
