He received the fervent support of Swedish director
Ingmar Bergman
during the beginning of his career, who regarded Vilgot Sjöman as his protegé.
Novelist, critic and essayist. Studied film in California, before becoming assistant to Ingmar Bergman.
Many of his films dealt with sexual themes and ran into censorship problems.
He received the Ingmar Bergman Award in 2003 for his contribution to Swedish cinema.
His films
I Am Curious (Yellow) (1967)
and
I Am Curious (Blue) (1968)
are regarded as two major Swedish classics.
In the early 1960's Vilgot Sjöman had a relationship with singer Monica Zetterlund.
He had 1 daughter and 2 sons with his wife, Lotta Sjöman.
