Charles Sheeler was born on 16 July 1883 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. He was a director and cinematographer. He died on 7 May 1965 in New York City, New York, USA.
Upon seeing a painting by Pablo Picasso in 1908, Sheeler--who had studied art
in Philadelphia--was inspired to combine cubism and realism. He applied
this style to the straight lines of American urban and industrial
scenes. He is considered one of the founders of American
modernism.
