Manchester, May 26 (Ians) Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has admitted it looks like Antony sustained a serious injury during the first half of the 4-1 win over Chelsea, here on Thursday.
United successfully booked a place in next season’s Champions League with a comprehensive victory, but it seems to have come at a cost.
The Brazilian winger was taken off on a stretcher in the 29th minute of the game with an apparent ankle injury following a fair tackle by Trevoh Chalobah and Marcus Rashford came on for Antony.
Not only was Antony in agony after being hurt in a challenge against Chalobah but Luke Shaw was also withdrawn at half-time with an injury, as Tyrell Malacia took his place.
“Everyone has seen him came off. I can tell you it is serious but we have to wait a minimum of 24 hours, then we know probably more about the status of the injury,...

London, April 26 (Ians) The Premier League sees three vital matches on Thursday night which will have a huge influence on both Europe and the battle to avoid relegation.
Ryan Mason returns to the Tottenham dugout in a caretaker role for his side’s key home game against Manchester United.
Mason was named as Spurs coach until the end of the season after the previous caretaker Cristian Stellini was sacked in the wake of Sunday’s 6-1 debacle away to Newcastle United.
That result dropped Tottenham six points behind fourth-placed Manchester United with Aston Villa’s win on Tuesday seeing them slip to sixth. With Brighton and Liverpool threatening, they run the very real risk of not playing in Europe next season, a Xinhua report said.
Manchester United still has a long injury list and Luke Shaw could have to cover in central defense, as he did in their Fa Cup semi-final on Sunday.

Madrid, April 21 (Ians) Six-time UEFA Europa League winners Sevilla roared into the semifinals of the tournament with a 3-0 win at home to Manchester United.
Moroccan international striker Youssef En-Nesyri scored twice on Thursday night as Sevilla sealed a 5-2 aggregate win, which is all the more remarkable due to the fact that they fell 2-0 down in the first half at Old Trafford last week.
The high press favoured by recently arriving Sevilla coach Jose Luis Mendilibar was evident in their opening goal, which came after just eight minutes, reports Xinhua.
David de Gea played a dreadful pass out of his penalty area to Harry Maguire as three Sevilla players swarmed around the defender. Erik Lamela won the ball and fed it to En-Nesyri, who scored from 10 metres out.

London, April 7 (Ians) There is another vital round of Premier League matches this weekend, with everything still to be decided at both the top and the bottom of the table, where everyone below 12th place Crystal Palace is in danger of the drop.
League leaders Arsenal travel to Liverpool on Sunday for what is arguably the most attractive game of the weekend. The weekend kicks off with Arsenal eight points clear of Manchester City after playing an extra game, but that lead could have been reduced to five points by the time they kick off at Anfield, reports Xinhua.
Seven consecutive league wins to make a good case for Arsenal to be favourites for this season’s title, while Liverpool’s recent performances, including a grim 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, also imply that Mikel Arteta’s side can end a wait of over 10 years for a...

London, April 4 (Ians) Manchester United’s 27-year-old England international left back Luke Shaw has signed a new contract with the club.
The new deal will keep Shaw at Old Trafford until the end of June 2027 and comes as a reward for a season where he has made 36 appearances for Erik ten Hag’s side, becoming a fixture in the starting 11, reports Xinhua.
Shaw joined Manchester United as a teenager from Southampton in 2014, becoming the most expensive left back in the world at the time, but he struggled to adapt and was publicly criticised by Jose Mourinho during the Portuguese manager’s time at Old Trafford.
He has since gone on to make 249 appearances for his club and 29 for England.
“Nine years ago, I signed for this amazing club, and I’m thrilled to be extending my stay,” said Shaw on the club website.

London, March 17 (Ians) England coach Gareth Southgate has made several changes to his squad for their Euro 2024 qualifying matches against Italy and Ukraine later this month.
Brentford striker Ivan Toney is rewarded for an excellent season that has seen him score 17 goals, while Chelsea full backs Ben Chilwell and Reece James are also included after having missed out on last year’s FIFA World Cup due to injury.
However, there is no place for Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Coady, Ben White or Callum Wilson, who were all present at the World Cup, while Raheem Sterling misses out through injury, a Xinhua report said.
Toney’s inclusion comes despite facing charges of breaching rules on betting, which could lead to him receiving a lengthy ban, but Southgate backed the powerful striker.

Doha (Qatar), Dec 11 (Ians) Another England World Cup dream dies in the quarterfinals meaning they carry on the ‘tradition’ of never making it past the last-eight outside of Europe.
England have now fallen in the quarterfinals seven times (more than any other country) with Qatar 2022 joining Germany 2006, South Korea and Japan 2002, Mexico 1986, Spain 1982 (which had a different competition format), Mexico 1970 and Chile 1962.
What makes this year’s exit tough to take for England fans is that it came in what was arguably the best match of the tournament to date. A match between two top sides, after a performance that probably deserved better and after seeing captain and striker, Harry Kane fire a penalty, that would have leveled the score at 2-2, high into the night sky of the Al Bayt Stadium.
Such an uncharacteristic miss for the player who 30 minutes earlier had equaled Wayne Rooney’s record of 53 goals in an England shirt.

Doha, Nov 22 (Ians) England coach Gareth Southgate admitted he was a happy man after his side kicked off their World Cup campaign with a 6-2 win against Iran on Monday, but he also insisted they would have to improve if they want to go all of the way in the competition.
England produced an impressive display, full of pace and movement and were rewarded by two goals from Bukayo Saka, along with efforts from Jude Bellingham, Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish.
“To win by that margin, to play as we did for the majority of the game, we’ve got to be really happy. We looked ready,” said Southgate after the game, reports Xinhua.

London, Nov 10 (Ians) Coach Gareth Southgate on Thursday announced a 26-man England squad for the 2022 football World Cup, including Leicester midfielder James Maddison along with Newcastle striker Callum Wilson.
Both the players have not played for England since 2019, but recent club form has seen them earn a call-up for the FIFA World Cup which begins on November 20 in Qatar.
On including Maddison in the team, Southgate said, “He is playing really well. We think he can give us something slightly different to the attacking players that we’ve got. He’s playing as good as any of the attacking players in this country. He is a little bit different from the others. I think we need that.”
Maddison last played for England in November 2019 while 2020 Wilson’s last international cap came a month before in October 2019.

Aston (Birmingham), Nov 7 (Ians) Unai Emery’s Aston Villa came up with a superb performance to shock Manchester United 3-1 at Villa Park, handing the coach victory in his first match in charge of the club.
The head coach masterminded the club’s first win in a Premier League home game versus the Red Devils since 1995 on the back of a flying start.
Leon Bailey drove home the opener in the 7th minute before Lucas Digne netted a delightful free-kick to double the lead shortly after.
Luke Shaw’s deflected strike just before half-time failed to deter the hosts, who wrapped up all three points when Jacob Ramsey slammed home a pass from the influential Ollie Watkins minutes after the restart.
Though United held sway with 61 possession while Villa had 38, the hosts had six shots in all of which four were on target. United took eight shots but only three of them were on target.

London, Oct 28 (Ians) Manchester United qualified for the knockout stage of the Europa League as Cristiano Ronaldo marked his return to the side by scoring in a 3-0 win over Sheriff Tiraspol at Old Trafford here on Thursaday.
In a match dominated by the Manchester United, headed goals from Diogo Dalot and Marcus Rashford in each half were added to by a late Cristiano Ronaldo strike to settle the victory. London, Oct 25 (Ians) Manchester United’s defender Casemiro said that his job is to defend and provide balance to the team. In a conversation with teammate Antony, the 30-year-old Brazilian professional footballer revealed that a goal here or there is nice but defending the team is the primary concern for him.
Five-time Champions League winner Casemiro joined the club from Real Madrid and scored his maiden goal for the Red Devils at Chelsea. The dramatic late equaliser came after a number of near-misses for the 30-year-old, despite telling the club’s official website that his primary concern is protecting the defence.

Paris, Sep 27 (Ians) England’s three-goal fightback from two goals down didn’t earn them a home victory against Germany on Monday, as Kai Havertz’s late goal, also his second in the game, saw the rollercoaster clash end in a 3-3 draw.
Thus, England finished their Nations League group matches with a six-game winless run, sitting at the bottom of the group, which also featured Italy and Hungary.
European champions Italy, who have failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, regained some pride as they won 2-0 in the battle for top spot in Budapest against Hungary, securing a place in the semifinals of the tournament, reports Xinhua. Giacomo Raspadori and Federico Dimarco scored for the Azzurri.

London, Sep 15 (Ians) England coach Gareth Southgate has called Brentford striker Ivan Toney into his squad for the forthcoming UEFA Nations League games against Italy and Germany.
However, there is no place for Manchester United duo of Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho just two months away from the start of the World Cup.
Southgate’s final squad before naming players who will go to Qatar is always going to be looked at with extra interest. Although Rashford is suffering from a slight injury, Sancho’s place on the plane must now be in serious doubt, reports Xinhua.
26-year-old Toney gets his chance after scoring 17 Premier League goals and giving six assists in just over a season with Brentford. He is an effective penalty taker and also a threat in the air and set-pieces.

London, Aug 14 (Ians) Manchester United suffered one of their worst defeats in Premier League history as Erik ten Hag’s side barely laid a glove on Brentford in a 4-0 defeat on Saturday.
Ten Hag was looking for a response to last weekend’s 2-1 home loss to Brighton and Hove Albion and was able to hand Cristiano Ronaldo a start, but all United got was a humiliation, reports Dpa.
David de Gea was at fault twice as Josh Dasilva and Mathias Jensen put Brentford two up inside 18 minutes, before Ben Mee and Bryan Mbeumo ensured Brentford became only the third side to put four past United in the first half of a Premier League game.
While the Bees could not inflict further misery on Ten Hag and United, it mattered little as the damage was already done.

London, Aug 14 (Ians) Coach Erik ten Hag blamed the players and not the plan after Manchester United’s calamitous 4-0 defeat at Brentford.
“You can have a good plan, but then you put the plan in the bin. I think it’s nothing to do with tactics,” Erik ten Hag said after the defeat against Brebtford.
“The first two goals are about dealing with the ball and decisions. I think they follow my instructions but they make bad decisions. This is football, it’s a game of mistakes and we got punished,” he added.

The England soccer team’s wives and girlfriends could be heading to Netflix. It’s understood the streamer is in early stage discussions with All3Media-owned Optomen TV over a reality series that will shoot during the World Cup in Qatar later this year.
According to The Sun, which first reported the news, Optomen has approached several of England soccer stars’ partner — who are often referred to as ‘Wags’ (Wives and Girlfriends) in the British press — about appearing in the show.
The series will follow the women during England’s stay in Qatar for the FIFA World Cup 2022 in November and December, filming their everyday lives.
Those reportedly approached include Love Island winner Dani Dyer, who dates attacker Jarrod Bowen, Manchester City winger Jack Grealish’s girlfriend Sasha Attwood and Anoushka Santos, wife of defender Luke Shaw. The Sun claims “very substantial fees” have been offered.

England’s hopes of capturing its first major soccer championship since the 1966 World Cup were crushed on Sunday as Italy defeated them in the UEFA Euro 2020 finals, which went to a penalty shootout for only the second time in the history of the tournament.
The match opened with the sold-out Wembley Stadium roaring as English midfielder Luke Shaw scored just two minutes into the match, the earliest goal ever scored in the finals of the Euros. But in the second half, Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci scored for Italy off of a corner kick to level the score at 1-1.
The score would stay there through extra time, leading to a penalty shootout that ended 3-2 in favor of Italy. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma secured the victory for Italy by deflecting the final penalty shot from England’s substitute midfielder Bukayo Saka.

They battled through regular time, stoppage, then went to penalty kicks to determine the Euro 2020 soccer championship.
Finally, Italy won, 3-2, as Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma turned back the final shootout attempt by England teenager Buyako Saka, setting off a wild celebration by the Italians. The win is Italy’s second Euro title and first since 1968.
After regulation ended at 1-1, neither team scored in extra time. That sent things to a penalty kicks shootout for the first time since 1976 in a Euro final. England manager Gareth Southgate sent out Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho to take penalty kicks, and both missed. Rashford hit the left post and Sancho’s effort was saved. That left it up to Saka, who was also stopped.
Italy’s second-half goal forced extra time. Defender Leonardo Bonucci scored to put the Italians in position, following up a loose ball inside the box with 23 minutes left.

London, May 25 (Ians) Ben White, Ben Godfrey and Aaron Ramsdale received their first England call-ups as Gareth Southgate selected Trent Alexander-Arnold among four right-backs in his provisional European Championship squad.
With the Three Lions dealing with issues such as injuries and European (Champions League) final absentees, the Football Association confirmed a larger provisional squad would be announced on Tuesday rather than the definitive group, Dpa reports.
Southgate has named a 33-man party that will be trimmed down to 26 players on June 1, allowing him to include injury doubts such as Harry Maguire, Jordan Henderson and Kalvin Phillips.

Kane, restored to the starting line-up after being rested against San Marino, opened the scoring on 38 minutes, finishing off Luke Shaw's cross.
And Mount secured the victory just after the hour mark to put England on six points out of six at the top of Group I.
"I thought it was a really good performance," Kane said. "Maybe a bit slow at the start but we changed our formation and I think that helped.

London, March 22 (Ians) Kelechi Iheanacho's double fired Leicester City to a 3-1 win over Manchester United and a first Fa Cup semi-final in 39 years. The in-form striker now has nine goals in his last nine games and booked a last four showdown with Southampton at Wembley next month.
Youri Tielemans also netted on Sunday to put the Foxes - four-time runners-up - a game away from their first Fa Cup final since 1969, Dpa news reports. Mason Greenwood did haul United level in the first half - after Fred's mistake presented Iheanacho with the opener.
It was just Leicester's second win over United in 23 years but a deserved one as they outplayed and outfought the visitors.
"It feels great, the whole team are happy," Iheanacho told the BBC. "We worked really well in training to get ready for this game, tactically worked really well in training I think we were...

Milan, March 19 (Ians) Substitute Paul Pogba struck just minutes after his half-time introduction to give Manchester United a 1-0 win at AC Milan to progress 2-1 on aggregate to the last eight of the Europa League.
Midfielder Pogba, on his return from injury, fired in high at the near post in the 49th minute on Thursday to give United the honours in the battle between former European champions, Dpa reported.
United led the first leg at Old Trafford until being denied victory by an injury-time equalizer but made no mistake in the return despite a lethargic first half.
"Obviously, we're very happy we're through," United full back Luke Shaw told BT Sport. "I'll be honest, and the lads and staff would agree, we weren't good at all especially first half we were awful.
"Second half it always helps to have a world class player like Paul (Pogba) to make a difference and he did that.

London, March 8 (Ians) Manchester United ended Manchester City's record breaking 21-game winning run on Sunday when they won 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium.
A second-minute penalty from Bruno Fernandez and a 50th minute goal from left-back Luke Shaw on Sunday gave United a win that still leaves them 11 points behind their neighbors, but will give them local bragging rights and confidence for the rest of the season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side defended magnificently and were lethal on the break, with Anthony Martial in excellent form in their win, and the only negative for Solskjaer was an ankle injury that forced Marcus Rashford off midway through the second half, Xinhua news agency reports.
Daniel Amartey's header two minutes from time had momentarily lifted Leicester City into second place ahead of United after a 2-1 win away to Brighton on Saturday night.

If you’re going to unseat Avengers: Infinity War at the global box office, you have to aim for the stars. Or Manchester United, in this particular case.
Yes, it can only be the latest promo for Deadpool 2, Fox and David Leitch’s superhero sequel that is now only a few days out. Such a tight deadline means the studio’s marketing machine has been firing on all cylinders for weeks – albeit with the Merc’s own signature touch of meta humor.
The result? A zany, irreverent promotional push that practically screams ‘Deadpool’, and a football-themed TV spot has arrived today in order to drive home the point that Wade Wilson will stop at nothing until Infinity War has been cut down to size. At the domestic box office, at least.

Manchester United have abandoned their pursuit of left-back Leighton Baines and will instead make a £25 million bid for Southampton’s Luke Shaw, according to the Daily Star.
United manager David Moyes had two bids rejected for Baines, one of £12 million and another of £28 million that was also to include team-mate Marouane Fellaini.
And though the latter joined on transfer deadline day, the former remained at Everton, and Moyes has now conceded defeat in landing the England international.
The champions also failed with a last-ditch bid for Real Madrid’s Fabio Coentrao as the window slammed shut on September 2, and Moyes will now turn his attentions to Shaw.
He may have to fork out £25 million however, after his club Southampton slapped a huge price-tag on the teenager’s head.
But that is unlikely to deter the United chief, who is determined to fend off interest from Chelsea and Tottenham,...

Manchester United manager David Moyes has enquired into the availability of Southampton left-back Luke Shaw as a possible alternative to Leighton Baines, according to the Express.
The highly-rated 18-year-old is considered one of England’s best prospects and is on Moyes’s radar following the Scot’s frustrations in landing Everton defender Baines.
United have now had two bids knocked back for the Toffees star, after a bid of £28 million for the 28-year-old and his colleague Marouane Fellaini was dismissed earlier this week as “derisory and insulting” by the Goodison Park outfit.
The champions are expected to improve on their offer and come back with £35 million but with Everton showing no signs that they are willing to sell Baines this summer, Moyes has alternatives.
Everton’s reluctance to sell to United is partly due to the Red Devils effectively appointing Moyes as the successor to Sir Alex Ferguson...

Saturday will witness the first game of the 22nd season of the greatest league in the world, the English Premier League. It would be fair to suggest that the final weekend of last year didn’t bring the same drama and significance as in previous years, with Manchester United running away with the title and Wigan, Reading and Qpr falling through the trapdoor of relegation prior the final day. With the Red Devils as dominant throughout the season as they were, hopefully this upcoming year will provide the unpredictability that the Fa and Capital One Cups brought to the fans.
Furthermore, it is hopeful that the players will provide their very best for their clubs and fans. Last year, superstars like Gareth Bale, Robin Van Persie and Luis Suarez lit up the league with the goals, whilst the likes of Christian Benteke and Romelu Lukaku displayed their immense potential as stars for the future.

Southampton kicked things off at a sunny White Hart Lane in what was a crucial game in Spurs’ hunt for Champions League football, as a 1-0 victory put them above Arsenal – albeit potentially temporarily – who kicked off later.
A tentative start from both teams saw a series of long balls being played back and forth to no immediate avail, culminating in Adam Lallana sending an early free kick floating disappointingly over Hugo Lloris’ bar in the third minute.
On the five minute mark, a good run in to the box from Jermain Defoe ended with the England man shooting viciously in to Artur Boruc’s side netting from eight yards.
For the next few minutes, Spurs really dominated possession – particularly in the midfield area – without really threatening, but it was Southampton who almost took the lead in the eleventh minute. Rickie Lambert took advantage of Tottenham’s high defensive line,...

Former Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge has finally completed his much-mooted move to Liverpool on a “long-term contract”. The 23-year-old’s move – at a reported cost of £12m – paves the way for Demba Ba to join Chelsea, after the Blues triggered his release clause earlier today.
Today’s early business sees striker Angelo Henriquez move from Manchester United to Wigan on loan until the end of the season. The 18-year-old Chilean international has so far been unable to break into Fergie’s first team since joining from Apertura in the summer.
Also leaving Manchester United is young striker Joshua King, who is off to Blackburn Rovers after a successful loan spell. He made two competitive appearances for United, including coming on as a substitute against Galatasary in the Champions League. The 20-year-old is contracted to 2015, with the option of an extra year.

According to the Mirror Manchester United winger Nani is Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger’s top transfer target in January, as the Frenchman looks to bolster his side in the New Year with further signings.
Wenger is hoping that having sold Robin van Persie to United last summer, Sir Alex Ferguson will return the favour and allow Portuguese Nani to move to the Emirates.
Nani is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury and hasn’t played for the Red Devil’s since November 3rd, when they beat Arsenal 2-1 at Old Trafford.
And with Theo Walcott still undecided on his Arsenal future, the signing of Nani could be a direct replacement for the Englishman. According to the Mirror, Wenger has been told he has money to spend and could afford Nani’s transfer fee of around £12m as well as Nani’s revised wage demands, with Arsenal able to go to £90,000-a-week.

Chelsea are lining up a shock move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto in the New Year, according to a report in The Mirror.
The Blues are in the market for a new left back, with veteran Ashley Cole’s contract running out in the summer and no renewal in sight. Youngster Ryan Bertrand was tipped to fill his position, however the club’s hierarchy believe the 23 year old could benefit from the competition the Cameroon defender would create.
Assou-Ekotto has barely played under Andre Villas-Boas’ Tottenham this season because of a knee injury that has kept him out of action since September 1st, managing only four appearances before that.
Spurs have coped without him however, despite the fact he was one of their best players last season. The emergence of Jan Vertonghen means that there may no longer be room for him in Villas-Boas plans in the New Year.

According to reports from the Daily Mirror Arsene Wenger is set to return to Southampton to sign their latest star prodigy having already recruited both Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The latest Saints name to be linked to Arsenal is 17-year-old left-back Luke Shaw, whose form and potential have seen him likened to Gareth Bale.
The youngster is an attacking full back in the same style as Bale started out with similarly blistering pace, and an eye for both goals and assists, thanks to his good set piece delivery. He scored three times from left back in Southampton’s Under-18 team, and has been promoted to the Saints first team squad in time for their return to the top flight this coming season.

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo is said to be ready to make a £4m bid for Southampton’s teenage full-back Luke Shaw, according to The Daily Mail. The England under-17 defender, who made his first team debut in the Fa Cup game against Millwall in the Fa Cup last year, has been christened the new Gareth Bale and understandably Southampton will resist any attempt to take him away from St Mary’s.
Shaw is highly-rated at Southampton, having been branded a big part of the club’s future by manager Nigel Adkins back in January but the opportunity to join the Champions League and Fa Cup winners might be too big for the player to resist, and £4m is a lot of money for a 16-year-old who might not feature in the first-team this season as Southampton return to the Premier League.
