Andor Season 2 Lets Us See What TV Is Like In The Star Wars Universe, And It's Amazing
Image
The "Star Wars" franchise has one of the biggest and most detailed fictional universes out there, with the first movie introducing a world that was both recognizable and entirely alien. Sure, we had a princess, a cowboy, a wizard, an empire, and a rebellion, but it was firmly an alien world that felt unlike ours in most ways. And yet, in time, the franchise started looking more and more familiar. The way the Ewoks fought the Empire in "Return of the Jedi" was unequivocally inspired by the Viet Cong, and the prequels took this to a new level, featuring an American diner in space, an opera house, a NASCAR race, and more.

This is not a bad thing, necessarily. The prequels were more specific in their commentary and used familiar imagery to tell a story of a very fictional world that nevertheless can suffer the same political issues ours does.

The Platino Awards, Ibero-America’s annual film awards ceremony, has got Madrid buzzing, with industry icon Eva Longoria set to pick up the show’s honorary prize on Sunday night.

The biggest filmmakers from central and southern America, Spain and Portugal have flocked to the Spanish capital for the 12th edition of the event, with nominees including the Academy Award-nominated Fernanda Torres for her performance in Walter Salles’ I’m Still Here and Úrsula Corberó in Luis Ortega’s Kill the Jockey.

Among other nominees are Brazilian actor Gabriel Leone for Netflix’s F1 series Senna and Spanish legend Pedro Almodóvar for his English-language debut The Room Next Door, which premiered in Venice last year.

The Hollywood Reporter caught up with Ortega on Saturday to talk politics and his next film.

Who Killed Amy Winehouse? Asif Kapadia on the Case of the Dead Singer, and the ‘Really Heavy’ Version of ‘Amy’ His Wife Preferred
Image
British filmmaker Asif Kapadia approached Oscar-winning documentary “Amy,” which was released 10 years ago, as if he were a detective investigating a crime, he told an audience of documentary professionals this week at Visions du Réel, a film festival in Nyon, Switzerland. So, who killed Amy Winehouse?

As he was making the film, Kapadia was conscious that it was “really dark.” “A friend said to me, ‘If you tell the truth, this film’s never going to come out.’ I thought: ‘What’s the truth? I don’t know what the story is.’ And then once I learned the story, I thought, ‘My God, this thing will never come out. It’s really heavy.’ There’s a version of this film that is 15 minutes longer, which is like really heavy, and my wife is still annoyed that we didn’t release that one, but it’s just a bit too much.

4 Common Mistakes Brad Pitt’s F1 Movie Must Avoid That Ruin Every Racing Film
Image
Car racing movies have a habit of cranking everything up to unrealistic levels. The speeds are exaggerated, crashes look like they belong in a superhero movie, and somehow, drivers have full-blown conversations while pulling G-forces that would knock a normal person out.

Hollywood loves to make racing look flashier, louder, and more dramatic, but in reality, Formula One is a sport of precision, split-second decisions, and intense strategy. It’s not just about flooring the gas pedal; it’s about tire management, pit stop timing, and battling for position without sending carbon fiber flying in every direction. Yet, time and time again, racing movies get it wrong, and for true motorsport fans, it’s painful to watch.

How To Watch the 2025 ‘Formula 1’ Season: Start Date, Race Schedule, and More
Image
The history of Formula 1 is certainly lucrative, with the highest class of international racing now in its 75th year since its 1950 inception. Since then, many names have been immortalized among the annals of the sport, with the likes of Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna, and Lewis Hamilton becoming household names the world over. In recent years, it's been the turn of Max Verstappen and his Red Bull team to take charge, although the battle with Lando Norris across the 2024 season has proven F1 is never a foregone conclusion.

“They diminished how worse the conditions were”: ‘Drive to Survive’ Season 7 Ignored Max Verstappen’s Greatest Race, but I’m Not Surprised Anymore
Image
History was made on 3 November 2024 at the Interlagos Circuit in Brazil. As rain poured down on the race track and cars slipped every which way under the strenuous wet conditions, the São Paulo Grand Prix was one of the most entertaining races of the 2024 season. And yet, Drive to Survive failed to capitalize on the hilarious weekend that was nothing short of circus comedy.

Drive to Survive Season 7 [Credit: Netflix]

It is not surprising, however, to see the Netflix series intentionally shooting itself in the foot. After all, this wasn’t the first time that Drive to Survive left out a significant race in favor of a more generic storyline (re: Daniel Ricciardo’s iconic Shanghai Grand Prix win in 2018).

What I do find surprising is the fact that after all the hoops that the series jumps through to carve out dramatic episodes for the fans, Brazil delivers the most entertaining...

Showrunner Vicente Amorim on Senna's Legacy
Image
The sports world has seen few legends loom as large in their country and their field as Brazilian Formula 1 great Ayrton Senna. One of the most iconic racing drivers in history, a symbol for speed, dedication, and grit, Senna thrilled fans the world over with his prowess in motorsports as he rose through the ranks in the 80s and 90s. Whether during his early days go-karting or as a three-time Formula 1 world champion, he never failed to set records, winning over ardent supporters along the way — including Vicente Amorim.

The Brazilian director grew up glued to his TV on Sundays, watching his compatriot Senna take the world, and the top of the podiums, by storm. “It was something that brought my family together, my friends together,” says Amorim. “It was something that I had only felt every four years during the World Cup when Brazil would play.

F1 Broadcaster Will Buxton Reflects on Senna
Image
On May 5, 1994, the Brazilian city of São Paulo, a metropolitan area of over ten million people, ground to a halt. In the midst of three days of national mourning, the city simply stopped moving as over half of its population lined its streets to bid farewell to a racing driver on his final journey. Draped in the national flag, his casket was carried live around a community in mourning. Over 30 years later his name still resonates, eliciting the deepest and most heartfelt of emotions. Because Ayrton Senna wasn’t simply a racing driver; he never was.

By the time he arrived in Formula 1 in 1984, Senna was already a phenomenon, having set a new record for race wins in a season in the preparatory British Formula 3 championship. His yearlong duel and rivalry with Martin Brundle, who himself made it to F1 and is today one of...

Gabriel Leone Transforms into Senna
Image
Showrunner Vicente Amorim, who grew up watching Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna rise to become a legend in the 80s and 90s and represent Amorim’s home country of Brazil, took little time to recall his favorite moment on the set of his biographical limited series, Senna. It was the first time he saw his lead actor, Gabriel Leone, don the iconic McLaren red racing overalls and hop into the MP4/4, the car that Senna drove to his first of three World Championships. “It’s like, O.K., this is really happening, and Gabriel is Senna.”

For Leone to be Senna, he had to portray all that the cultural luminary possessed: grit, passion, perfectionism, charisma. Amorim knew even before Leone zipped up the racing overalls that the qualities that made Ayrton Senna da Silva the Senna were qualities Leone would find natural to inhabit. “I made a movie with Gabriel...

5 Reasons Why Senna on Netflix Was a Complete Disaster
Image
Netflix has released a highly anticipated biographical drama miniseries on the legendary Brazilian Formula One racer Ayrton Senna. A high-stakes project since its inception in 2020, the show was met with sheer disappointment. The reviews from critics and fans ring a similar tone of dissatisfaction. The legacy of the Brazilian hero was not easy to do justice to. But the Netflix series barely managed to scrape the surface of his life.

A still from Senna miniseries | Credits: Netflix

While the series had great potential of winning hearts with Senna’s larger-than-life story, Netflix seems to have fallen short in its attempt to present a dramatized version of Senna’s life fully. There are many things wrong with this miniseries. However, five significant flaws in the show convince viewers that the show is an absolute disaster.

The Incredible Numbers Behind Netflix’s ‘Senna,’ Its Most Ambitious Brazilian Production to Date
Image
What a difference a decade makes. It’s been nearly 10 years since Brazil produced the dystopian “3%,” its first series for Netflix. Since then, the country has launched an average of two shows a month on the platform, said Elisabetta Zenatti, VP of content for Netflix in Brazil, who announced last year that the streaming giant was investing $165 million (1 billion Reales) in Brazilian productions thru 2023 and 2024.

On Nov. 29, Netflix’s most ambitious and expensive Brazilian series, “Senna,” launched worldwide. According to the Associated Press, the streamer spent over $170 million on production. Currently ranking number two in Brazil and number six globally in its first week, it’s likely to sit high in Netflix’s Top Ten charts in Brazil and other territories, given the fervent interest in motorsports around the world.

The Controversial Chicane Penalty That Caused Senna His Victory In 1989
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Senna.

Netflix's miniseries Senna shows the life and challenges of legendary Formula One icon Ayrton Senna, one of which was his controversial disqualification from a 1989 race. One of the most pivotal moments in Senna's career is shown in the fourth episode of the series, which features his infamous race against his Formula One rival Alain Prost in the 1989 Japanese Grand Prix.

Senna didn't just get into a crash with Prost during this climactic race. The latter was declared the champion despite Senna finishing in first place. This divisive decision was due to an alleged penalty in which Senna "cut" the chicane following the crash. As depicted in Senna, this loss at the Japanese Grand Prix was one of many obstacles in Senna's illustrious career, and the controversy continues to be discussed today.

‘Senna’ Netflix Review: A Tepid And Shallow Portrayal Of The Legendary Brazilian Racing Driver
Image
Patrick Willems has ruined biographical movies and shows for me. Well, to be honest, he was talking about musical biopics in his video, and I am using the word “ruined” jokingly because that video helped me view biopics in a totally new light. The crux of Patrick’s thesis was that the reverence with which the subject of a biopic is usually treated is tepid, formulaic, and hence, boring. Now, if you don’t know a lot about the person in question, you don’t care about the filmmaking and storytelling of a biopic, because you’re too busy gathering information. However, due to the evolution of the internet, knowledge is at your fingertips. So, when you’re not watching a biopic for the info, the shortcomings in the filmmaking and storytelling become obvious. Ever since I learned this, biographical dramas have become the least interesting thing in the world of entertainment for me.

‘Senna’ Netflix Ending Explained, Finale Recap & Real Reason Behind Ayrton’s Death
Image
The Netflix miniseries on the legendary racing driver, Senna, covered his whole life story over the course of six very long episodes, with the show’s ending focusing on the lead-up to the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, where he unfortunately perished. Ever since he took up go-kart racing, Ayrton Senna was a stickler for fair play and scoffed at rules that were made to favor the racer that organizers loved. Things reached a boiling point in his professional career when the Fia (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile) disqualified Ayrton’s win at the Formula One Suzuka Grand Prix because of a technicality, thereby prompting him to speak against the organization at a press conference. According to the show, the stress of dealing with the politics of racing while also partaking in death-defying competitions got to him and led to a bad muscle spasm after the 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix. Three years later,...

How ‘Senna’ Helped Kaya Scodelario Connect With Her Brazilian Heritage: “This Fed My Soul More Than Anything I’ve Ever Done”

Senna came at the perfect time for Kaya Scodelario.

She had been in search of the right project, a production shot in Brazil and crafted by its people — something that would tug at the strings of her half-Brazilian heart and challenge her. “It was like Christmas morning,” the star says of finding there was a role going in Netflix series Senna. Her mother moved to England from Brazil shortly before Scodelario was born, but the Skins and The Gentlemen star often spent summers there growing up and has always felt deeply attached to that side of her identity.

“Senna was a huge part of my childhood,” she says of the former racing driver. “To every Brazilian, he is a hero and an icon, and culturally so significant.” She’s right: Ayrton Senna da Silva was the face of Formula One for a long time and his legacy has endured through decades.

But then the series goes on to make such a series of mistakes that one wonders why this story needed to be re-told.

Image
Brad Pitt will go all out to promote the June 2025 release of F1, producer Jerry Bruckheimer said Thursday.

“Brad is really invested in this movie,” Buckheimer said during an appearance at Liberty Media’s investor day in New York. “He doesn’t like to do press, but I think we’ll take him on a world tour where he’ll be glad to show his efforts in driving and acting in this movie.”

Formula One was acquired in 2016 by Liberty. The company, controlled by media billionaire John Malone, invited Bruckheimer to its investor meeting to drum up enthusiasm for the film project, which was made with its co-operation. It is the latest screen promotion for the auto racing circuit, following the multi-season success of Drive to Survive on Netflix. The streamer is also getting set to release limited series Senna, a scripted take on the late F1 driver Ayrton Senna.

The Unfortunate Reason Why Michael Schumacher Did Not Attend Ayrton Senna’s Funeral
Image
In the world of Formula 1, the sport often demands much more than just speed and skill. It demands sacrifice, resilience, and sometimes the ability to navigate through grief. When Ayrton Senna tragically passed away during the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, the impact on his fellow drivers was profound, especially on Michael Schumacher, who was just beginning to rise as one of the sport’s most formidable talents.

True, Senna was the leader of his generation—driven, competitive, and intensely passionate. Schumacher, a young upstart, was beginning to challenge Senna’s dominance on the track, but the latter’s loss left him questioning the very purpose of racing.

Ferrari arrived in a blaze of glory before fizzling out with the whispers of time. Neither Adam Driver nor Penelope Cruz could do anything to save the film while Michael Mann’s 8-year-long hiatus did nothing to improve upon his spiraling reputation as a director since the 2004 masterpiece, Collateral.

It was the unlikely Brazilian telenovela star Gabriel Leone who stole the spotlight instead. As Alfonso de Portago, Leone gained international recognition and acclaim. Now, as Senna in Netflix’s upcoming eponymous miniseries, Gabriel Leone will rise to the occasion and become the new god of Interlagos.

2073 Review: Kapadia’s Urgent Warning for the Modern World
Image
Asif Kapadia is known for his critically acclaimed documentary films profiling famous figures like athletes Ayrton Senna and Diego Maradona. In 2073, Kapadia takes a bold step into speculative fiction with his vision of what might lie in store for our warming planet if current crises continue unabated.

The film flits between a gloomy portrayal of life on Earth in the year 2073 and sobering glimpses at our present-day world, linking real-life challenges to the director’s imagined societal collapse.

In the future sequences, we find Samantha Morton’s character eking out an uneasy existence in the ruins of San Francisco. Now known as New San Francisco, the city is an arid, heavily-policed wasteland where the privileged elite float above it all in sky-high towers.

Morton’s Ghost is haunted by past trauma and the deteriorating state of a world battered by climate change, shrinking freedoms, and unbridled corporate control. Through her eyes and voiceovers,...
