Back in 2016, director Scott Derrickson and co-writer C. Robert Cargill's "Doctor Strange" walked so the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe could run. The underrated origin film might not have indulged in the same kind of cameo trend and crossover hype tactics as some of the bigger titles that followed in its footsteps, not to mention reaching the same heights at the box office, but the movie still established quite a few benchmarks the franchise would continue to rely upon. For one thing, Derrickson and his creative team clearly defined the visuals of the cosmic side of the MCU -- something we've seen even in the latest "Deadpool & Wolverine" trailer. For another, taking the time to flesh out Stephen Strange's unique backstory allowed subsequent projects to hit the ground running (such as "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" or the Disney+ "What If?" series) and further...

Get ready to meet the ultimate life form, because we now know who will be voicing Shadow the Hedgehog in the upcoming "Sonic the Hedgehog 3," and it's none other than Keanu Reeves.
The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop, with multiple sources confirming that Reeves will return to voice acting after playing Batman in "DC League of Super-Pets." The news comes after Paramount Picture's big presentation at CinemaCon last week where they debuted footage from the upcoming "Sonic 3." Our own Ryan Scott was on-site to witness the footage, which included the reveal Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik is now depressed and out of shape, looking just like his nickname — Eggman. Then he gets a surprise alert that "they found it," referring to Shadow the Hedgehog.
Shadow first appeared in 2001's "Sonic Adventure 2," and has since become one of the most popular characters in the franchise — an edgy antihero and the coolest hedgehog around.

Jon Musker and Ron Clements' 2016 animated Disney film "Moana" was a massive hit, making over $687 million worldwide. The titular character is a princess from the Polynesian island of Motunui. Her people are content on their island and hate venturing out into open waters, a mandate that Moana (Auliʻi Cravalho) decides to break when a blight strikes her village. The bulk of "Moana" follows the princess after she sets sail and befriends Maui (Dwayne Johnson), an impish demigod with a connection to the blight. "Moana" was nominated for two Oscars, including Best Animated Feature and Best Song.
A "Moana" TV series was in the works at Disney, although those plans were surprisingly altered in February 2024 when CEO Bob Iger announced that the series was being reworked into a movie sequel instead. The release date was given as November, only nine months from the announcement. In terms of Disney marketing, that was pretty short notice.

Few movies embody the pre-pandemic moviegoing days quite like "The Lion King," an expensive, fully CGI remake of a hand-drawn animation classic, which made over $1.5 billion in 2019 yet rarely seems to come up in pop culture conversations since its release. Whether you loved, hated, or forgot about the box office behemoth, we think its sequel, "Mufasa: The Lion King," is still worth considering. That's because the follow-up film is directed by Barry Jenkins, the wildly talented filmmaker behind Best Picture winner "Moonlight" and the recent Criterion Collection addition "The Underground Railroad," among other masterpieces.
/Film's own Ryan Scott caught an exclusive glimpse of "Mufasa: The Lion King" today in Las Vegas at CinemaCon, where Hollywood goes each year to show off the latest and greatest movies it has to offer. Director Fede Álvarez (2013's "Evil Dead") is looking to revitalize the "Alien" franchise with his new film: "Alien: Romulus." No, "Romulus" isn't hinting at a "Star Trek" crossover, but it does feature rising stars like Cailee Spaeney ("Priscilla") and Isabella Merced (2025's "Superman").
After the mood-setting first trailer for "Alien: Romulus" and some positive buzz (including recruiting the effects team from "Aliens" who built the Xenomorph Queen), /Film's Ryan Scott caught another glimpse of "Romulus" at CinemaCon during the presentation by 20th Century Studios' parent company, Disney.
Set between the events of 1979's "Alien" and 1986's "Aliens," the film features its young stars dodging aliens — from facehuggers to Xenomorphs — on an otherwise empty space station (I wouldn't guess it's "abandoned" since there could be other reasons why there are no humans on board). How will "Romulus" stand out next to the previous film in the franchise, 2017's "Alien: Covenant," or indeed the original film?...

Deadpool & Wolverine Footage Reaction: Wade Wilson Brings R-Rated Raunch To The MCU [CinemaCon 2024]
Deadpool, the foul-mouthed pansexual super-anti-hero played by perpetual smart-aleck Ryan Reynolds, is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). That alone feels like pretty mind-blowing stuff, but he's also bringing back Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, who appeared to have hung up his adamantium claws after "Logan" in 2017. In the upcoming "Deadpool & Wolverine," hitting theaters on July 26, 2024, the Merc with the Mouth will join the MCU courtesy of some timeline-bending shenanigans ala the Disney+ series "Loki," and the first teaser trailer hints at just how that all happens. Unfortunately, we don't get to see much of Morena Baccarin's Vanessa or Brianna Hildebrand's Negasonic Teenage Warhead, and we have no idea how Jennifer Garner's Elektra Natchios from 2003's "Daredevil" factors into things, but thankfully now we've got a bit more information on the McU's first R-rated movie.

Marvel Studios has been quiet for a little while, but Kevin Feige and company made a splash at CinemaCon 2024 by showing off several minutes of footage from one of their next big movies.
One of the most astonishing things about the 15-year-long cultural phenomenon of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that they managed to get a mass audience to care about limp characters like Thor and Captain America. As a comics reader in the 1990s, I recall that those who read Thor and Captain America books were snickered at; the X-Men, Batman, Spider-Man, and the then-rising Image Comics characters were considered way cooler. Thanks to the MCU, however, Captain America (previously played by Chris Evans) was now hip, and his movie "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" is often vaunted -- rather debatably -- as one of the best films in the long-running series.

Humanity has a lot of making up to do after ushering in the fall of civilization and our replacement at the top of the food chain by intelligent simians, so 20th Century Studios is doing all that it can to make things right by bringing the next installment of the popular sci-fi franchise to the annual convention aimed towards theater owners. Luckily, /Film's very own Ryan Scott is in attendance at the event, covering all the major happenings as major studios descend upon the bright lights of Las Vegas. It's been 24 years since Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" brought the glory and gore of ancient Rome to gorgeous life, and now the prolific director has returned to the tale with "Gladiator 2." Set 20-30 years after the events of the first film, "Gladiator 2" will star Paul Mescal as Lucius, the son of Roman Empress Lucilla. Though Maximus (Russell Crowe) died along with Lucius's vicious uncle Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) at the end of "Gladiator," both Lucilla and Lucius survived.
The movie will also star Denzel Washington as an arms dealer who has a stable of gladiators and Joseph Quinn as Emperor Caracalla, along with Pedro Pascal, May Calamawy, Peter Mensah, Matt Lucas, Fred Hechinger, and Derek Jacobi. That's quite a packed cast, although with a reportedly massive budget of more than $300 million, "Gladiator 2" could prove to be a disaster financially while paying off well for movie-goers who want to see some high-end historical fiction.

Filmmaker Parker Finn has experienced a career start that most can only dream of. After his 11-minute horror short "Laura Hasn't Slept" screened at SXSW 2020, Finn signed a deal with Paramount Pictures to adapt it into a feature-length film, "Smile," which stars Sosie Bacon as a psychotherapist who becomes targeted by a sadistic demon. After witnessing a patient's suicide, she's plagued by hallucinations of people she knows staring at her with very creepy smiles, and finds herself unable to trust anything she sees or hears.
"Smile" grossed more than $217 million at the box office, a massive success given its $17 million budget, and a sequel was soon greenlit, with Finn returning as writer and director. Kyle Gallner, whose character survived the last movie and was implied to be the demon's next target, has returned for "Smile 2," and is joined by new cast members Naomi Scott, Lukas Gage, Rosemarie DeWitt, Dylan Gelula,...

Since 2007, the "Transformers" movies have been A) Primarily set on Earth (excepting prologues in "Dark of the Moon" and "Bumblebee" showing the war for planet Cybertron) and B) Live-action, using CGI to integrate the Autobots and Decepticons into real settings. Director Josh Cooley ("Toy Story 4") is about to change that with "Transformers One." /Film's Ryan Scott, who attended the Paramount Pictures panel at CinemaCon 2024, got an early look at the upcoming animated movie.
"Transformers One" is a prequel set before the war when the Autobots and Decepticons were still one people. Since the movie is set entirely on Cybertron with only robot characters, it makes sense to tell the story through animation. "Transformers" is no stranger to prequels -- check out the comic series "The War Within," High Moon Studios' video game duology "War for Cybertron" and "Fall of Cybertron," and more. Still, this is new territory for the films.

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Footage Reaction: Shadow The Hedgehog Makes His Grand Entrance [CinemaCon 2024]
The "Sonic the Hedgehog" franchise is one of the best arguments in favor of the whole "IP is king" theory. The video games weren't exactly a pinnacle of narrative craftsmanship, relying more on the charm of the characters and the appeal of the gameplay to become as popular as they did. But the first and second movies, released in 2020 and 2022 respectively, were big hits for Paramount, suggesting the characters and brand recognition were enough to keep audiences engaged. Naturally, then, we'll be getting "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" this year, and we just got our first look at it.

Sound might be instant death in the world of "A Quiet Place," but that's not stopping Paramount Pictures from making some noise with the newest installment of this unexpectedly successful franchise. First kicked off by director and star John Krasinski in 2018, the high-concept genre movie instantly stood out as an original, well-crafted, and thoroughly engrossing experience at the theater. And since anything done well these days is apparently always worth doing twice, if not more, that effort led to a sequel just two years later. Now, we're on the cusp of a prequel movie that aims to turn back the clock all the way to ground zero of the alien invasion with "A Quiet Place: Day One."

What a time for "Avatar: The Last Airbender" fans to be alive. The Aang Gang was first immortalized in Nickelodeon's original animated series, one that practically altered the brain chemistry of countless kids of my generation and introduced us to the sheer potential of storytelling. Netflix most recently took advantage of the nostalgia and goodwill the show still enjoys, translating the tale of Aang's destiny as the Avatar and his war against the Fire Nation into a live-action retelling that quickly justified a second and third season. All that took place as a backdrop to the news first reported two years ago, of course, which indicated that Avatar Studios (headed by the creators of the original show, Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dimartino) was going all in on a trio of new animated movies set in the world of "Avatar."

Captain's Log: Stardate 2024. It's been eight years since the USS Enterprise's last voyage on the big screen, with the franchise having since returned to its roots on television. During that period, the property has proliferated thanks to an influx of streaming series that's included everything from a "Next Generation" reunion to a raunchy cartoon and a wonderfully silly musical episode. But through it all, the question has lingered: when will Trekkies get to undertake another mission painted on the largest canvas available?

Based on the book by Gregory Maguire, the hit Broadway stage musical "Wicked" opened on October 30, 2003, at the Gershwin Theatre, and has been running there ever since. It recently surpassed "Cats" to become the fourth longest-running show in Broadway history, although it has a long way to go to supplant "The Lion King" as the third-longest. The musical is a prequel to "The Wizard of Oz," depicting the Wicked Witch of the West as a young green-skinned woman named Elphaba whose reputation has been wildly misunderstood. CinemaCon 2024 is well underway and the latest film to be given the sneak peek treatment is Robert Eggers' "Nosferatu." The upcoming horror remake from the "Northman" director will star Bill Skarsgård as the titular vamp, alongside Lily Rose-Depp, Nicholas Hoult, and Willem Dafoe. One of the most upsetting horror films of recent years is getting the Hollywood treatment, and the trailer is finally here. Christian Tafdrup's "Speak No Evil" debuted in 2022, with the Danish filmmaker zeroing in on our shared desire to avoid conflict and remain polite in social situations, revealing some discomfiting truths about our capacity for self-destruction in the process. The "Speak No Evil" remake from Blumhouse, then, will attempt to translate what was already a startling effective film for English audiences, with "Eden Lake" director James Watkins at the helm.
Just how the James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis-starring remake will manage to match the original is perhaps the biggest question here, mainly because the 2022 movie was already brilliant, but also because Tafdrup has spoken numerous times about how he was inspired by his own culture and thought "suppressing feelings and being dictated by social behavior was a very Scandinavian problem.

Hollywood has been obsessed with biopics for what seems like forever, but it's hard not to admit that our current film landscape is reaching critical mass with movies about famous people. I guess when they've run out of recognizable IP, they've gotta center stories about recognizable faces instead. Last year alone we saw "Maestro," "The Iron Claw," "Napoleon," "Ferrari," "Nyad," "Priscilla," and "Big George Forman," not to mention brand movies like "Blackberry," "Tetris," "Air," and "Barbie." And then, of course, there's "Oppenheimer," which not only took home seven Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, but also became the highest-grossing biopic of all time. No shade to our boy Oppy, but it seems like a new film from Antoine Fuqua is coming for that title and the fact it's a movie about the most famous musical performer to ever live certainly gives the project a leg up on the father of the atomic bomb.

Chad Stahelski's 2019 actioner "John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum" featured a character named Rooney, a ballerina who was studying to be an assassin. Good Fortune Footage Reaction: Keanu Reeves Is Aziz Ansari's Literal Guardian Angel [CinemaCon 2024]
Aziz Ansari was a big name in comedy in the 2010s, not just from memorable roles in shows like "Parks and Recreation," but also his stellar turn as creator of the acclaimed Netflix comedy "Master of None." Ansari was set to make his directorial debut back in 2022 with "Being Mortal," but that film was shut down following sexual harassment allegations against Bill Murray, the star of the film. He became a Goth household name in 1994 thanks to the popularity of Alex Proyas' ultra-stylized, uber-Noir film adaptation starring Brandon Lee, who was infamously killed on the set of "The Crow" thanks to a misfiring prop gun. The teens of 1994 venerated the film, and "The Crow" was deeply beloved by many. The film warranted several sequels, including "The Crow: City of Angels" in 1994, "The Crow: Salvation" in 2000, and "The Crow: Wicked Prayer" in 2005. O'Barr's characters were also featured in the 1998 TV series "The Crow: Stairway to Heaven."
Although O'Barr's Goth sensibilities were a product of their time, filmmakers and producers have been trying to get a "Crow" remake off the ground for a long while, and the project has changed hands almost a dozen times in the last 20 years. After a lot of juggling,...

Director Bryan Bertino crafted a classic of the home invasion genre when "The Strangers" hit theaters in 2010. Now, Lionsgate has teamed up with director Renny Harlin ("Deep Blue Sea") to revamp the franchise with not just one movie, but an entire trilogy that will not just remake the first film, but further explore these mysterious killers across three full movies. The studio is deeply committed, as all three movies are already in the can. Hence, they brought some new footage from "The Strangers: Chapter 1" to this year's CinemaCon, and I was on hand to see what they had to show us. Buckle up, horror fans.
Harlin explained in an interview with /Film that he hopes to "answer some of those questions that I think all of us who enjoyed the original were left wondering" such as "Why? Who were the Strangers? Why did they do this? Is this completely really random,...

It's Margot Robbie's world and we're just living in it, folks. The actor-turned-producer is flying high after her work both in front of the camera and behind the scenes of "Barbie," teaming up with director Greta Gerwig to turn what many assumed would be some soulless corporate product into a bona fide sensation. Between that and her star-making performances in recent years, she's pretty much had her pick of the litter in Hollywood. And now, she's using her well-earned clout to take on another major production that most have remained skeptical of: a movie based on the popular board game Monopoly.
/Film's Ryan Scott is currently on the ground at this year's CinemaCon event and was in attendance of the Lionsgate panel, where they announced that "Monopoly" will, indeed, pass Go as the studio is joining forces with Robbie's LuckyChap production company to make this far-fetched concept into a reality.

The ghost with the most is back, baby, ready to wreak havoc on the Deetz family more than three decades after he first haunted their home. In Tim Burton's "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," Michael Keaton's Beetlejuice returns to the big screen along with Catherine O'Hara's Delia Deetz and Winona Ryder's Lydia Deetz. They will be joined by "Wednesday" star Jenna Ortega as Astrid Deetz, Lydia's daughter, bringing three generations of gorgeous goth Deetz women to do battle against the supernatural huckster Beetlejuice. We've already seen a short teaser trailer for the film, which briefly shows the Deetz women at a funeral (possibly for the family patriarch, Charles, played by Jeffrey Jones, who fell out the limelight after a shocking arrest). There doesn't seem to be any sign of the Maitlands, the ghosts who haunted the attic in the original "Beetlejuice," but we'll just have to wait and see what...

When your last film won Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Film, what in the heck could you possibly do for an encore? When you're Bong Joon-ho, a one-of-a-kind cinematic visionary who's yet to make a less-than-great movie, you go to Warner Bros and you go epic.
Bong's follow-up to his 2019 triumph "Parasite" is "Mickey 17," an adaptation of Edward Ashton's critically acclaimed science fiction novel about an expendable space explorer (Robert Pattinson) sent on a perilous mission to colonize the ice planet Niflheim. When the first Mickey dies, a human print is generated with most of the deceased's memories intact. In Ashton's book, the human printing process is set to continue indefinitely after the newest iteration of Mickey dies. But when one Mickey survives after being presumed dead, there are now two Mickeys on Niflheim – which would result in both being eliminated.

There is not a more divisive filmmaker working today than M. Night Shyamalan. Everyone can basically agree that his 1999 breakthrough "The Sixth Sense" is a supernatural classic, but after that? Slip on the brass knuckles and get ready to rumble. Shyamalan's early 2000s hits "Unbreakable" and "Signs," along with his 2017 comeback "Split," generate the least amount of friction, but aside from those three, it's so very on. You'll hear reasonable defenses for just about all of his films (save for the singularly atrocious "The Last Airbender"). While it's hard to sway folks on a movie as wackadoodle as "The Happening," it is only a good thing to have a major filmmaker knocking out provocative original movies for major studios.
Shyamalan's latest provocation, "Trap," will be his first project under his first-look deal with Warner Bros., and as is typically the case with a new Shyamalan movie, we know next to nothing about it.

A group of people stuck in an isolated location being terrorized by enigmatic and very possibly supernatural forces residing just outside the barriers of their refuge, all of which feels more like a waking dream than events taking place in the real world? "The Watchers" is a Shyamalan joint alright, just not the Shyamalan who gave us thrillers like "Signs," "The Village," and "Knock at the Cabin." This intriguing big-screen take on A. M. Shine's novel of the same name instead comes from writer and director Ishana Night Shyamalan, daughter of M. Night and a first-time feature filmmaker looking to mark a splash after helming multiple episodes of the acclaimed Apple TV+ series "Servant" (which M. Night also worked on as a producer and director) and doing second unit work on some of her pop's pictures since his return to low-budget thrillers around a decade ago, starting with "The Visit.

Since the "Furiosa" trailer first released in November 2023, one of the top questions on most fans' minds was exactly what the deal was with Chris Hemsworth's character, Dementus. From the trailers, he sure seemed like an antagonist, but he also felt a little too cool and fun to be a straightforward villain. Chris Hemsworth is always likable, after all, especially when he gets to use his native Aussie accent. At Warner Bros.' CinemaCon 2024 presentation in Las Vegas, attended by /Film's own Ryan Scott, director George Miller shed some light on creating the new villain Dementus for the upcoming prequel film, as well as his thought process on hiring Hemsworth for the role.
"There needed to be an element of charisma" to this character, Miller said. "There had to be a spontaneity and a darkness to it," so Hemsworth took inspiration from dictators throughout history. Of course, Marvel fans...

Time to put on your spurs and don that 10-gallon hat that's been gathering dust in your closet. With his "Yellowstone" days potentially behind him, Kevin Costner is taking moviegoers back to the Old West with his multi-part directorial effort "Horizon: An American Saga," and he's bringing all his friends with him. That's not even a joke. The "Dances With Wolves" filmmaker appears to be competing with "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" when it comes to assembling a massive cast filled with big names and respected character actors. Having gone more than 20 years since his last sojourn in the saddle with the 2003 Western "Open Range," Costner is clearly embracing a "go big or go home" philosophy here. Personally, I just hope the Academy allows John Mulaney to summarize the plot for this particular Costner concoction when next year's Oscars ceremony rolls around.

/Film has the CinemaCon scoop here for you directly from the reporting of our own Ryan Scott, served up shiny and chrome. First, "Furiosa" director George Miller took the stage alongside main stars Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor-Joy, where he revealed that work on "Furiosa" was completed just last week. Whereas the original 2015 "Mad Max: Fury Road" took place over the course of three total days, Miller emphasized that the prequel film covers the period of 16 to 18 years.
Of course, Miller had nothing but high praise for his leading lady, stepping in for Charlize Theron in this prequel film. Hilariously enough, he described his casting of Taylor-Joy as motivated by the fact that she's exactly the type of person he'd enjoy hanging with during an actual apocalypse. We only think he was joking. He went even further, however, describing the necessity of casting someone who could stand up to the...

"Dune: Part Two" has officially become a commercial success, passing huge box office milestones and creeping towards the $600 million mark worldwide. Director Denis Villeneuve has thus proven wrong those who said Frank Herbert's celebrated "Dune" novel was "unfilmable," especially when you consider the critical response in conjunction with those box office numbers. "Dune: Part Two" might be a bleak blockbuster, but it's so far managed a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a similarly impressive 95% audience score.
It's safe to say, then, that Villeneuve's epic sci-fi sequel is not only a critical and commercial success but perhaps even a box office savior. Back in February, prior to the film's March debut, /Film's Ryan Scott noted that movie ticket sales were down 15% compared to the same point in 2023, and there's not a movie fan out there who isn't aware of the industry's post-pandemic struggles. Alex Garland's latest film, "Civil War" has a fascinating and quite eerie premise. At some point in the not-very-distant future, the United States has been torn apart by a civil war between three factions: the remnants of the U.S. government; a so-called Florida Alliance; and a Texas-California collision called the Western Forces. The seemingly random choice of factions, plus the idea of A24 making a war movie its first blockbuster, was intriguing even before the film's SXSW premiere inspired rave reviews (including one from /Film).
What's unusual about the film is that the titular civil war goes rather unexplained. Vagueness is the key to "Civil War," with Garland leaving enough blanks for the audience to fill in themselves.
Speaking after the premiere at SXSW, at a Q&a attended by /Film's Ryan Scott, Garland explained how the idea for the film came to him after getting Covid during the early days of the pandemic,...

If superhero movie enthusiasts are feeling a little bummed out about the genre's recent downturn in popularity, they can comfort in knowing that, as a wise woman once wrote, "Today is where your book begins; the rest is still unwritten." We loved "Everything Everywhere All at Once" around these parts (you can read our review right here), but it seems like some folks have soured on the flick ever since it took home an Oscar for Best Picture. So it goes. The feature helmed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, aka The Daniels, is wild, unpredictable, funny, and emotional. Perhaps the emotional angle is what turns people off these days — it seems like anyone or anything who dares to express any type of half-positive emotion is labeled as "cringe." And that's a shame. None of this is to say you're not allowed to dislike the movie. To each their own.
But if you still have a place for "Everything Everywhere All at Once" in your heart, you might be curious about how the wild and crazy film came together. Or more specifically, where all of the over-the-top insanity originally sprung from.

Dev Patel's directorial debut, "Monkey Man," is an ambitious endeavor that centers on no-holds-barred action amidst a complex political backdrop set in present-day India. Judging from the trailer that was released for the film, Patel plays a nameless man referred to as "Kid," who is inspired by Hanuman, the half-human, half-ape deity in the Hindu epic, "Ramayana," which eventually leads him to take up the moniker of "monkey man." Driven by retribution and the need to balance the scales of justice after experiencing trauma for years — including being a victim of social and political ills that are closely connected to status, class, and caste — Kid walks down a brutally uncompromising path with no point of return.

Marvel Studios' "Thunderbolts" has suffered another setback. Actress Ayo Edebiri has exited the project, citing scheduling conflicts. The exit comes almost exactly a year after Edebiri's casting was announced. However, "Thunderbolts" has already found its replacement: Geraldine Viswanathan.
Reporting suggests that Edebiri's scheduling conflicts stem from production delays on "Thunderbolts." Filming was previously pushed back to accommodate the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike and Edebiri's commitments evidently no longer align with the revised "Thunderbolts" schedule. Steven Yeun, who was set to appear in "Thunderbolts" as Robert Reynolds/The Sentry, has exited the project for similar reasons (the part has since been recast with Lewis Pullman).

Don't let anyone tell you differently: 2023 was one helluva year for the movies.
Even as the industry struggles to recover in the wake of pandemic that nearly torpedoed everything, and even as reliable franchises started to sputter a bit, the past 12 months proved that movies have, if you'll allow us to break out the old cliche, never been better. Two of the biggest studio releases of the year were as thrilling as anything we've ever seen in a multiplex. More than a few animated movies pushed their mediums forward in dramatic ways. Though director Yorgos Lanthimos has built up his own mini-fandom of cinephiles who love bizarre, darkly comic films, he didn't really hit it big at the box office until 2018's "The Favourite." Strong overseas performance coupled with Oscars buzz made "The Favourite" a commercial hit as well as a critical darling.
That success story that scored Lanthimos a bigger budget for his new movie, "Poor Things." The period science fiction story stars Emma Stone as Bella, the reanimated corpse of a pregnant woman who was brought back to life with the brain of the baby she was pregnant with, creating an infant mind in an adult's body. It's certainly a bizarre premise, courtesy of the novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray, but "Poor Things" is off to quite an astonishing start at the box office. Like "The Favourite," it debuted in just a handful of theaters and is gradually expanding to more locations.

It looks like Apple Original Films has another potential hit on its hands. "Napoleon," Ridley Scott's historical epic led by Joaquin Phoenix, has grabbed a significant piece of the holiday weekend pie according to Variety. "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" isn't just a perfect movie, it's a delicate one. Director Steven Spielberg was coming off a rip-snorter of an adventure film in "Raiders of the Lost Ark," which, following the (unjustified) critical drubbing he received for "1941," reestablished him as Hollywood's preeminent orchestrator of escapist entertainments. Given his box office bona fides, he had clout to burn, and could've easily mounted a David Lean-sized epic (which had to be tempting considering that "Lawrence of Arabia" is one of his favorite movies). But he saw a piece of his melancholy childhood in Melissa Mathison's tale of a boy and his alien buddy, and let his heart be his guide instead of his ego.
Released on June 11, 1982, "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" hung out in the box-office Top 10 well into 1983. It was the highest-grossing movie of all time globally until Spielberg one-upped himself commercially 10 years later with "Jurassic Park." But...
