“A Million Little Things” actor Lizzy Greene is set to star in and executive produce 5X Media’s “High Tide,” a survival thriller that follows a group of friends stranded on an island in the Pacific.
“High Tide” is the first feature film by management-production firm 5X Media.
The film’s official logline reads, “Greene plays Hannah who, mourning the death of her sister, takes off around the world. Her journey leads her to Fiji and on a tour of an isolated atoll—a volcanic island that disappears with each high tide. But when the group are stranded, the rapidly rising ocean begins to reveal its terrifying inhabitants.”
Directed by David Straiton (“Narcos” and “The Originals”), and written by Erik Patterson and Jessica Scott (“Abandoned”), the film will begin production this fall in South East Asia. Scott Einbinder (“Killer Joe”) and Matt Bierman (“Deep Blue Sea”) will produce.

We’re finally into September after a wild and diverse August filled with professional women, queer Chosen Families, owl-headed slashers, horny lighthouse keepers, and highly controversial homoerotic underground monsters (which begs the reminder: listen to the podcast instead of just commenting on the post).
Trace and I, along with special guest Jessica Scott, are kicking off the new month with Agnieszka Smoczynska’s ‘The Lure’, a feminist parable about two mermaids – Silver (Marta Mazurek) and Golden (Michalina Olszańska) – who become cabaret sensations in Warsaw in the 1980s.
As their power and popularity grow, the sisters are betrayed by their chosen family, night club singer Krysia (Kinga Preis) and her shitty son Mietek (Jakub Gierszał), for whom Silver undergoes a dramatic physical transformation (cue the trans reading of this already very queer film).

A former preschool teacher from “the city,” Sara Davis (Emma Roberts) had been told by so many parents of the euphoric sense of love they cultivated the moment their child was born. She hoped it would wash over her upon giving birth to her and husband Alex’s (John Gallagher Jr.) son Liam. But it simply never presented itself. It eluded her to the point of seeing a psychiatrist about postpartum depression and he agreed there was a problem. She subsequently rejected the idea of medication due to breast feeding being the only time a connection seemed possible. So the Davises decide moving to the country might jog her out of her “funk” instead. Perhaps purchasing the site of a murder-suicide wasn’t the best throw-in value, though.

A listless thriller that can’t find its footing, “Abandoned” does occasionally rouse itself enough to suggest a better movie that never comes to pass.
Emma Roberts and John Gallagher Jr. are the new parents thinking about a move to the country, if only their real estate agent Cindy can talk them into it. Veterinarian Alex (Gallagher) is fully on board, especially when they see an old farmhouse that deserves its own feature in The New York Times’ Real Estate section.
A worried and solemn Sara (Roberts), though, seems more hesitant. She notices that this gorgeous house and its beautiful property (the movie was shot in North Carolina) have been on the market at a very low price for a while. You’d think she’d back out pretty fast when Cindy confesses the reason: 40 years ago, it was the site of a double homicide, and a lot more besides.

"We're going to pull together and find a way to get out of here! First, we're gonna seal off this pool." When Fox revealed this week who exactly would be writing the next season of “The X-Files,” the reaction was relatively polarized: excitement over the return of fan favorites versus dismay that creator Chris Carter had passed up the opportunity to bring new voices into the mix. The creator brought in three former assistants to join returning Season 10 writers Glen Morgan, Darin Morgan and James Wong.

For anyone who believes a variety of diverse voices can do a lot to improve the quality of a show’s writing, this move came as a real blow. Producer Chad A. Verdi had already assembled a memorable cast for his current project, Army of the Damned, but the man behind Woodhaven Productions refuses to rest on his laurels.
Verdi has now added former WWE Diva Maria Kanellis and the infamous Jasmine St. Claire to the project.
Everyone has a favorite wrestling diva, but it is this writer's opinion that there has never been a more drop-dead gorgeous creature to enter the squared circle than Maria Kanellis. She is absolutely stunning, and as you can see by the still shot from Army of the Damned below, she's got no trouble getting into the action of a bloody horror film.

Bjarne Melgaard: A New Novel by Bjarne Melgaard Luxembourg & Dayan Through December 22, 2012 I open one eye. Sunlight pours in through my Zaha Hadid-designed venetian blinds, casting horizontal shadows on the walls, turning the room into a recumbent prison cell. I was supposed to meet James Franco (who is still a little sore at me for beating him out for the part of Cocktimus Prime in Sue de Beer's hardcore version of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) in Central Park an hour ago, but my Philippe Starck alarm clock (which I fully believe is haunted) failed to wake me. I open both eyes, decide that it is probably safe, and dress quickly: black crinolined Brioni smoking jacket, Hello Kitty T-shirt, baby seal-skin pants, and boots hand-carved in Brazilian rosewood (by some guy in Tokyo, whose name is comprised entirely of consonants and who has a nine-year waiting list) which resemble small cats,...

The Writers Guild of America honored The Hurt Locker and Up in the Air at their ceremony on Saturday night, firmly establishing the films as front-runners in their respective Oscar categories.
Mark Boal certainly deserves the accolades after embedding himself with an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team in Baghdad in 2004 and turning his journalist findings into a dramatic original screenplay. In his speech Boal thanked director Kathryn Bigelow for supporting “an unpopular story about an unpopular war that has now lasted twice as long as WWII with no end in sight.”
Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner picked up the prize for their adaptation of Walter Kirn’s novel, and Mark Monroe won for the moving documentary The Cove.
The WGA Awards are a somewhat reliable indicator of the Academy Awards. ”Original Screenplay” has matched 10 out of the last 15 years, and “Adapted” has lined up 11 of 15, including Milk and Slumdog Millionaire last year.

The Hurt Locker and Up in the Air were the night's big winners on the film side while Mad Men, 30 Rock and Modern Family took home the winged trophy for achievements on the small screen at the annual Writers Guild Awards, held Saturday in Los Angeles. While accepting one of two awards for Modern Family, creator/executive producer Steve Levitan told the crowd that because TV was "so screwed up and mismanaged," many of his writing peers have been rooting for the single-camera comedy's success on ABC. "Thanks for that, Jeff Zucker," Levitan said -- a reference to the NBC Universal...

As hard as it may be to believe sometimes, someone (or someones) actually sits down and writes a movie or TV show before you end up seeing it at your local multiplex or on your favorite TV network. The people who do the sitting and the writing are, surprisingly, called writers and, like the Directors, the Golden Globes and the Oscars, they have their own awards show.
This week, the Writers Guild of America, which is the trade group and advocate for writers, announced its nominations for outstanding achievement in feature film and television, radio, news, promotional writing, and graphic animation during the 2009 season to be honored at the upcoming 2010 Writers Guild Awards on February 20, 2010, in Los Angeles and New York.
We realize that these nominations may not be as glamorous as the Golden Globes or the Oscars, but we kinda like writers around here and think they do a pretty important job.

Awards heavyweights "Mad Men," "30 Rock" and "The Office" and buzzed-about newcomer "Modern Family" led the TV field for the 2010 Writers Guild Awards with three nominations each.
AMC's "Mad Men" and NBC's "30 Rock" and "The Office" are in the running for best drama/comedy series, and each received two nominations for episodic writing. "Family" made the cut for best comedy series, best new series and best episodic writing for a comedy series.
ABC's "Family" was one of two new shows to break into the best series categories along with Fox's quirky high-school dramedy "Glee," which faces "Family" in the best comedy series and best new series fields.
While the WGA Awards are still in its nomination phase, Fox's "The Simpsons" can already uncork the champagne. The veteran series is assured to win the animation category after landing all five nomination slots.
