As MSNBC continues to clear the decks on its dayside afternoon programming on weekdays, the only question remaining is who will permanently fill the void. Gone (some as program hosts, some altogether from the network) include Ronan Farrow, Joy Reid, The Cycle, Alex Wagner, Ed Schultz, and most recently yesterday, Al Sharpton...who will move his struggling 6:00 Pm Et weekday program to Sunday mornings.

In the fall of 2011, MSNBC was riding high. Occupy Wall Street had ignited a sleeping giant, bringing disenchanted Americans of all ages to Zucotti Park and cities across the country to rail against corporate greed and capitalism gone wild. The movement, mixed with the buildup to a pivotal presidential election, led to record ratings for MSNBC, which had firmly become the media megaphone for progressiveness. Yesterday I had a thought – which I do have on occasion.
I have always considered myself a “socially conscious” comics writer. This means that, if you look over my body of work, you will notice that I have told stories that, in one way or another, reflect “real world” events and the consequences of those events on my characters. Notably, of course, in my 1986 Lois Lane mini-series about child abduction and abuse, “When It Rains, God is Crying” (coincidentally edited by ComicMix’s Robert Greenberger when we were both working for DC, he an editor and me a freelancer), but also as far back as “Moon River,” my first story in New Talent Showcase, an admittedly tyro effort to portray the outcome of a closed, dictatorial society on an individual. And of course there was “Chalk Drawings,” which I co-wrote with George Pérez for Wonder Woman, which was a story about suicide.

That may sound odd, but given that I often have the same reaction to reality shows — which this scripted series is designed to emulate — it’s not entirely surprising. What’s working is the way the show manages to so perfectly recreate all the clichés we’ve come to expect from reality shows. From the cutaway interviews in which the contestants give their take on the unfolding events to the occasionally-jittery camerawork, cheesetastic host, and Survivor-like opening credits, the show captures the genre perfectly. The problem with the series is pacing. During the age of Obama, MSNBC has evolved more than any of its cable competitors. First came the 8 pm merry-go-round starting with the exit of one time ratings behemoth Keith Olbermann, followed by short stints for Lawrence O’Donnell and Ed Schultz, to the recent decision to go All In with the wonkish warrior that is Chris Hayes. At the same time, Phil Griffin has boldly bet on smart and insightful over screaming and sensational for weekend mornings while sprinkling in more progressive opinion during the day via Alex Wagner and The Cycle.

MSNBC‘s revamped weekend lineup that now includes Ed Schultz is starting to take shape. Political analyst Karen Finney has been named host for a new weekend show that will air from 4-5 Pm, the cable news network said today. The former Democratic National Committee spokesperson has been a contributor and guest host on MSNBC since 2009, and she also was deputy press secretary to then-First Lady Hillary Clinton and deputy director of presidential scheduling for President Clinton. Finney’s new show, which doesn’t have a name yet, will serve as a lead-in to Schultz’s new weekend show that will air from 5-7 Pm. “Karen’s rich background in both education policy and politics will add a unique point of view to our expanding live weekend programming,” MSNBC president Phil Griffin said today. Previously, Steve Kornacki, co-host of the weekday afternoon show The Cycle, was tapped to step into...

Last night, Chris Hayes made his primetime debut on MSNBC, officially stepping in as Ed Schultz's replacement in the 8 p.m. slot. Perhaps this led some of you to wonder how the end other of that transition — Schultz's weekend show on the network — is doing. Fending on any conspiracy theorists, Schultz addressed issue on his radio show yesterday, informing that there may be no show yet... but that doesn't mean he's going anywhere.

Right now it's looking like we've got a series of programming dominoes at MSNBC. First, Ed Schultz announced he was starting a weekend show, then Chris Hayes was announced as the host of a new show airing in Schutlz's time slot, leaving Hayes' show Up needing a host. Yesterday, MSNBC announced that Steve Kornacki will be the new Up host. Now, there's an unfilled host's chair at The Cycle. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Johnathan Capehart who was an great guest-host on The Cycle when Kornacki wasn't there.
In today's "Oh, damn it!" news, HBO went and cancelled Enlightened. Dammit.
Jane Espenson has joined the team working on that Once Upon a Time spin-off. She'll be a consulting producer, the same role she has at Once.

Ed Schultz has never been particularly shy about responding to media stories about him and his relationship with MSNBC, and following Schultz's shift from the coveted 8 P.M. slot to a weekend program, many in the media have speculated about what this means for Schultz's future at the network. Politico's Dylan Byers wrote in his report following Schultz's announcement that MSNBC insiders do not consider the move to be as amicable as Schultz suggested. Schultz expressed his outrage at the report last week when he called Politico "freaking whores."...

In an ABC News interview, Bill Gates was asked about what he learned in scouting, and the answers made me wonder why anyone would want to be a scout. Dick Morris surprised everyone at Cpac by slamming Rep. Paul Ryan's budget, saying the entitlement cuts would cost the Republicans ten years of elections. He also said the Republican party needed to pass immigration reform and soften their stance on abortion, though nothing about gay rights.

MSNBC's Ed Schultz used the final moments of his final weekday primetime show to address his move to weekend afternoons and welcome his replacement Chris Hayes with open arms. Schultz's farewell message was mostly positive, though he did work in an ornery dig at Politico writer Dylan Byers, who wrote that Schultz's new time slot was "a relative no-man's land for cable news programming."...
