Steve Pepoon, Writer on ‘The Simpsons,’ ‘The Wild Thornberrys’ and ‘Alf,’ Dies at 68
Image
Steve Pepoon, who received an Emmy for writing an episode of The Simpsons as a freelancer, worked on other TV comedies like It’s Garry Shandling’s Show, Alf and Roseanne and co-created The Wild Thornberrys, has died. He was 68.

Pepoon has been in treatment for a heart condition called cardiac amyloidosis for the past two years and died unexpectedly May 3 outside his home in Paola, Kansas, his wife, Mary Stephenson, told The Hollywood Reporter.

After moving from his native Kansas to Los Angeles in 1979, Pepoon in late 1985 finally sold his first script, which became an episode of Silver Spoons that aired in January 1986. Fifteen months later, he was hired as a staff writer on Alf, another NBC comedy, and wrote for its final three seasons through 1990.

He kept writing on spec, and one script he did for Fox’s The Simpsons, “Homer vs. Lisa and the 8th Commandment,” won him his Emmy,...

Before Friends, Jennifer Aniston Was In A Television Flop Based On An '80s Classic
Image
Jennifer Aniston would become one of NBC's biggest stars as Rachel Green on "Friends," but the path to fame isn't always smooth. One of her bumps along the way (besides starring in the ridiculous horror comedy "Leprechaun"), was her role in a television adaptation of John Hughes' '80s classic "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." Aniston was perfect for the role of Jeannie, Ferris' sister, taking over from Jennifer Grey, who played that character in the film. Aniston's low, deadpan voice, pouty mouth, and sighs of exasperation perfectly captured Jeannie's sourpuss attitude and frustration with Ferris' antics — namely his uncanny ability to charm everyone he comes across and his nimble ways of wriggling out of trouble. She's a great fit for the role, but the television show itself? Well, it's not so great. It's bizarre, even.

"Ferris Bueller's Day Off," the best John Hughes film ever made, focuses on the...

Review: Captain Planet: The Complete Franchise
Image
Conceived by Barbara Pyle and media mogul Ted Turner, Captain Planet was an ecological hero way ahead of his time. The animated series ran for years with some nifty design work by Neal Adams and his Continuity Associates. Each episode featured an adventure and a lesson (of course). It endeared itself to a generation of viewers and remained an enduring figure from the 1990s.

Now, Warner Home Entertainment has released Captain Planet the Complete Franchise, with 41 hours and 31 minutes of environmental goodness. For silly legal reasons, the show has two titles evenly split among its six seasons: Captain Planet and the Planeteers (animated by Dic) and The New Adventures of Captain Planet (animated by Hanna-Barbera) for the final three seasons.

Gaia, the spirit of Earth, was voiced by Whoopi Goldberg, who set the tone and standard for the entire series. She was accompanied by a voice cast that included Margot Kidder...

“As much as she hates to admit it”: Jennifer Aniston is Lonely Despite Her $300 Million Net Worth and Romance With a Mystery Old Friend
Image
Jennifer Aniston is still considered a heartthrob by many fans of the Friends sitcom that everybody loves dearly. Despite having successful runs on Friends (1994-2004), Ferris Bueller (1990-1991), and Herman’s Head (1991-1994), Aniston found great success in shooting films as well.

However, her most iconic role was Rachel Green on Marta Kauffman and David Crane’s hit 90s sitcom, Friends. Much like Rachel, the 55-year-old also found it very hard to maintain relationships before finding “the one”.

Jennifer Aniston as Rachel Green in Friends | Credits: Warner Bros.

In the television show, Rachel dated multiple guys while trying to figure out her head regarding the dashing Ross Geller (portrayed by David Schwimmer). The story realizes a happy ending, Ross and Rachel fall in love with each other and probably live happily ever after. As much as Aniston’s fans wanted the same for her in real life, it’s been quite the opposite.

The Awful ‘Ferris Bueller’ TV Show Opened With the New Ferris Chainsawing Matthew Broderick’s Likeness in Half
Image
Life moves pretty fast. It moves a lot slower when you’re watching the painfully terrible intro of the equally terrible Ferris Bueller sitcom.

On paper, you can see why Paramount was eager to turn their 1986 hit teen comedy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off into an at least watchable sitcom centered around the title character. After all, Matthew Broderick’s performance as the devilishly charming delinquent who spends a sick day enjoying all the most iconic sights and sounds of Chicago perfectly captured a cultural moment during director John Hughes’ legendary run of classic teen movies set and shot in and around the Windy City.

However, the turd that Paramount Television squeezed out in 1990 was neither watchable nor iconic — in fact, the ABC show Ferris Bueller was so bad and so unpopular that the network ended up canceling the abomination in the middle of its first season.

Expectations for the TV...

Ferris Bueller Spinoff Movie Moving Forward at Paramount, Taps It Producer to Direct
Image
Paramount is moving ahead with its Ferris Bueller spinoff film, Sam and Victor's Day Off.

First reported by the newsletter The InSneider and confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has set David Katzenberg to direct Sam and Victor's Day Off. Like Ferris Bueller, the upcoming spinoff will take place over a single day, following the two titular valets who borrow the Ferrari belonging to Cameron Frye's (Alan Ruck) father in John Hughes' original 1986 film. Katzenberg is best known for serving as a director and executive producer on the '80s-set television series, The Goldbergs, and producing Warner Bros.' Stephen King adaptation, It (2017).

Surprising Ferris Bueller Spinoff Movie Scores A Director In New Update
Image
Sam and Victor's Day Off, a spinoff of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, lands director David Katzenberg for a unique take on the iconic film. The Ferris Bueller sequel or reboot was deemed less effective by Broderick, leading to a spinoff honoring the original movie's events. Katzenberg's spinoff may offer fresh storytelling perspectives and nods to iconic moments, with potential promise for success.

Sam and Victor’s Day Off, the surprising spinoff movie based on Ferris Bueller's Day Off, has landed a director. First announced in 2022, the spinoff will return to the same day Matthew Broderick and his friends famously took a day off school, but will instead focus on the two parking attendants who absconded with the 1961 Ferrari 250 Gt belonging to Cameron’s (Alan Ruck) father. Set to be produced by Paul Young (Key & Peele) and Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, the script is also...

Fox Executives Ruthlessly Recast Futurama At The Very Last Minute
Image
When Matt Groening and David X. Cohen's animated sci-fi comedy "Futurama" began to be developed in the late 1990s, it was not treated with the respect one might expect for a follow-up to "The Simpsons." Where Groening's previous cartoon dealt in the classic sitcom setup of a dysfunctional family, "Futurama" was a harder sell, set in the year 3000 but in a world that largely looked like the late '90s. Only with aliens and spaceships.

Fox, the channel on which the show premiered, should have been a good home. After all, "The Simpsons" was an incredible success, at that point entering its 10th year on the network. Mike Judge and Greg Daniels had produced the excellent "King of the Hill" for Fox, giving the channel another animated sitcom hit. Seth McFarlane's "Family Guy" was in development around the same time. All of these shows would become part of Fox's...

Futurama Secretly Recast 2 Of Its Most Important Characters
Image
Futurama's original intention was to cast Charles Schlatter and Nicole Sullivan as Fry and Leela, but Billy West and Katey Sagal ended up being the perfect fit. Despite confusion surrounding the change in casting, West and Sagal delivered committed and hilariously dedicated performances throughout Futurama's 11 seasons. While it's unclear why the recasting occurred, the decision ultimately paid off, as evidenced by Futurama's enduring success and the return of the show for season 11.

At the start of Futurama's complicated but critically acclaimed run, two of the series' most important characters were quietly recast. Amid a history of cancelations, revivals, and syndication, Futurama has persisted as a favorite among adult animation shows and was awarded with many prominent award nominations. Futurama is attributed to the mind of The Simpsons' star creator Matt Groening, but all of Futurama's working parts can assume responsibility for the series' iconic status and undeniable success.

From a killer bear to a man-eating demon, here are five hidden horror gems and deep cuts that you can check out in February 2023.

Trapped (1973)

Directed by Frank De Felitta.

In this offering from ABC Movie of the Week, James Brolin plays a divorced father looking for a certain gift for his daughter. Had he not tried to thwart a mugging, though, his character might have been able to deliver the gift on time. Instead, the protagonist is rendered unconscious until he wakes up alone in the mall. Well, not completely alone because the grounds are...

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off spinoff in development from Cobra Kai creators
Image
Deadline reports that Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald are developing a spinoff of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off for Paramount Pictures.

The Ferris Bueller’s Day Off spinoff is titled Sam and Victor’s Day Off and will follow the “same-day adventures of the titular valets who took the Ferrari on a joy ride” in the 1986 John Hughes movie. The original roles were played by Richard Edson and Larry “Flash” Jenkins, but the characters weren’t given names at the time. Bill Posley (Bitch Ass) is slated to pen the script for the spinoff.

Although there had been talks of a Ferris Bueller sequel back in the day, the first project to emerge was a TV series that portrayed the “real” Ferris Bueller upon which the movie was based.

Ferris Bueller saws into Matthew Broderick cut-out in '90s sitcom
Matthew Broderick in Una pazza giornata di vacanza (1986)
Some movies make for great TV shows: Friday Night Lights, Parenthood, and Fargo are just a few examples of recent, successful series that were born out of big-screen versions. Other movies do not—including Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Say Anything is latest subjected to the movie-to-tv transition, although it didn't last too long—after NBC announced plans for a half-hour comedy based on the 1989 movie, Say Anything director Cameron Crowe made his objections known and within 24 hours, the show was done. And, from the looks of a clip from the TV version of Ferris Bueller that a Reddit user dug up,...

The Strange Time ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ Became a Terrible TV Show
We’re still a few years away from being able to hop a quick flight into space (after our self-driving car parks itself in the terminal), but if you want to feel like you’re standing on another planet, you should watch the Ferris Bueller TV show. Created for NBC’s lineup in 1990, it’s an odd pop cultural artifact that plays like a window into an alternative universe that somehow exists in our own without melting all physical laws into shoe-ruining mud. In it, Charlie Schlatter is Ferris Bueller, Jennifer Aniston is his pissy sister Jeannie, and Richard Riehle (before he became rich inventing the Jump To Conclusions Mat) is the stuffy Principal Ed Rooney. The natural response is that these are impostors, that you’re somehow being tricked, and that instinctive mindset colors everything that the show does. It would probably be even stranger if the characters felt right while not looking right, but...

Jennifer Aniston Briefly Dated Charlie Schlatter in the 90s
During her stint on the 1990 TV adaption of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” Jennifer Aniston had a brief love affair with a co-star and GQ Editor-in-Chief Jim Nelson is spilling the details.

Jim was a comedy writer’s assistant on the project and during his piece in the May 2014 issue of the men’s fashion magazine, he reveals that the “Friends” gal had a “brief, torrid” relationship with Charlie Schlatter during the show’s 13-episode run.

"To Aniston worshipers, I can offer little dirt," Nelson writes about the actress, who is now engaged to Justin Theroux. "She was lovely, kept to herself on the set, smoldering a bit like her outraged character, 17-year-old Jeannie Bueller. She was a brunette then, with none of Rachel Green's bob or self-possession.”

“GQ can exclusively report that everyone on set thought she was hot, including Schlatter, with whom she had a brief, torrid romance—while playing,...

Another Jennifer Aniston Ex Unearthed: GQ Editor Spills on Her "Torrid Romance" With a Former Costar
Jennifer Aniston
Jennifer Aniston was obviously irresistible long before she was one of Hollywood's best Friends. In what basically amounts to an aside in a new essay about his days as a writer's assistant on the TV-sitcom circuit, GQ editor-in-chief Jim Nelson reveals that Aniston had a fling with Charlie Schlatter, who played the titular truant in the short-lived small-screen version of Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The show lasted for one season between 1990 and 1991, and it sounds as if that hookup--when Aniston was barely 21—didn't last for nearly as long. "She was lovely, kept to herself on the set, smoldering a bit like her outraged character, 17-year-old Jeannie...

Justin Theroux in IMDb First Credit (2016)
Bueller? Bueller? Long before Justin Theroux or even Brad Pitt swept Jennifer Aniston off her feet, another man romanced the then-future A-list superstar: Charlie Schlatter, her costar in the short-lived 1990 TV adaptation of the classic John Hughes film Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Called simply Ferris Bueller, the NBC sitcom starred Schlatter in the title role (played memorably in the movie by Matthew Broderick), and a pre-Friends Aniston in the role of his sister, Jeannie (Jennifer Grey in the film). Stars (the voices of): Clancy Brown, Troy Baker, Travis Willingham, Christopher Corey Smith, Charlie Schlatter | Written by Jon Burton, David A. Goodman | Directed by Jon Burton

Starting as it means to go on with side-splitting spoof of the opening to Tim Burton’s classic 1989 Batman flick, complete with the dramatic Danny Elfman score, Lego Batman: The Movie – DC Superheroes Unite re-purposes the cut scenes from the recent Lego Batman 2 videogame into a movie which sees billionaire Lex Luthor (voice by Clancy Brown) become jealous of Bruce Wayne (Troy Baker) when he receives the man of the year award instead of Lex.

Deciding to run for President, Lex teams up with Gotham’s supervillain community to create the atmosphere for his type of fear-based politics, recruiting the Joker (Christopher Corey Smith) to perfect a Black Lego Destructor Ray to wreak havoc on Gotham. As Lex destroys Batman’s tech, Batman...
