Five full weeks after the Oscars, the Writers Guild of America finally got around to giving out its awards. Oscar winner Cord Jefferson (“American Fiction”) won the original screenplay prize while David Hemingson (“The Holdovers”) picked up the adapted screenplay trophy; he had lost at the Oscars to “Anatomy of a Fall,” which was ineligible here.
Three other scripts deemed ineligible by the WGA went on to win Oscars in the past decade: “Birdman” (2015; original), “The Father” (2021; adapted), and “Belfast” (2022; original). During that time, 68 of the WGA Awards nominees numbered among the 100 screenplays that reaped Oscar bids.
Two other Oscar contenders — “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest” — were ruled out of the running by the guild before nominations were announced way back on Feb. 21. The WGA included “Barbie” in the original lineup while the academy had it over in adapted. That was the third time in a decade that...

David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.
This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.
The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.
The best documentary screenplay award went to Errol Morris for The Pigeon Tunnel.

With the 2024 Oscars and the 2023 Emmys firmly in the rearview mirror, the film and TV awards calendar is all but ready to return to normalcy after last years Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes disrupted the first half of award season. The last major event to be impacted by the altered schedule is today’s WGA Awards, which took place in an unusual post-Oscars slot after the strikes forced the guild to delay its voting process. As most of Hollywood looks ahead to the 2024 film and TV slate, today’s concurrent ceremonies in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium and New York City’s Edison Ballroom gave award watchers one last chance to celebrate the best screenwriting of 2023.

As was the case last year, only six of the current 10 Oscar nominees for screenplay achieved similar recognition from the Writers Guild of America. Three of the four films that were excluded from the WGA rosters revealed on February 21 – “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest” – had been deemed ineligible in January, while “Maestro” simply failed to garner enough support from the guild.
Although it’s competing for the adapted screenplay Oscar, “Barbie” is included in the WGA’s original lineup. This marks the third such instance in 10 years, following the cases of “Whiplash” (2015) and “Moonlight” (2017), the latter of which won the favor of both organizations. The remaining original WGA contenders are “Air” and Oscar hopefuls “The Holdovers,” “May December,” and “Past Lives.”

The strike-delayed nominations for the 2024 Writers Guild Awards are out. Check out the list below.
In a flipping of the script this season, the WGA Awards will be held on April 14 – more than a month after the Academy Awards.
As always, the Writers Guild of America has different eligibility requirements than the Movie Academy, so some awards-season favorite scripts are missing from today’s nominations.

The nominees for the 2024 Writers Guild of America Awards are finally here.
The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and Writers Guild of America East (Wgae) have announced nominations for outstanding achievement in screenwriting, television, new media, news, radio/audio, and promotional writing for 2023.
Oscar-nominated screenplays for “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “May December,” “Past Lives,” “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and “Oppenheimer” were expected WGA nominations. However, surprise nods for “Air,” “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” and “Nyad” prove the WGA Awards still have a few tricks up their sleeve. If you’re wondering, “Poor Things” was not eligible because it wasn’t produced under a WGA contract, per a source close to the project.
Despite now taking place one month after the Academy Awards, the WGA nominations still carry weight this season — and could be a deciding factor for final Oscar voting. As IndieWire’s Anne Thompson predicted,...

As a teenager in the Sixties, he’d travel from his apolitical family’s home on Long Island to Greenwich Village, where he’d watch radical folkies like Tom Paxton, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, and Dave Van Ronk play. He grew especially close with Van Ronk, who taught Katz guitar — and took him to socialist party meetings.
So it was frustrating and difficult when, in 1970, the U.S. State Department announced that Blood, Sweat & Tears – the band Katz had co-founded in 1967 — would...

"We're just musicians, man, we just went to play some music for people." Abramorama has unveiled a trailer for a rock doc about a band from the past called What the Hell Happened to Blood, Sweat & Tears?, directed by doc filmmaker veteran John Scheinfeld. That is one catchy title, definitely makes you want to watch and find out what the hell happened to them! And it's a hell of a story. The truth-is-stranger-than fiction film blends political intrigue, social commentary, and a mystery about one of the biggest rock bands of the late 60s and early 70s. A political thriller with a classic rock band at the heart of the action, What the Hell Happened to Blood, Sweat & Tears? is a feature-length documentary that unravels the details of the band's controversial Iron Curtain Tour, featuring present-day interviews with band members and historians, the unsealing of government records, along with documentary...

Blood, Sweat & Tears venture behind the Iron Curtain in the wild new trailer for the upcoming documentary, What the Hell Happened to Blood, Sweat & Tears?
As the clip establishes early on, Blood, Sweat, & Tears were briefly the biggest band in America — Grammy winners with massive hits like “Spinning Wheel.” But in 1970, at the height of their powers and the Vietnam War, the U.S. State Department enlisted the group for a tour of three Soviet-linked countries: Poland, Romania, and the former Yugoslavia. Looking like U.S. government pawns didn’t exactly endear Blood,...

Abramorama, a New York-based film distribution and marketing company, has acquired worldwide rights to “What the Hell Happened to Blood, Sweat & Tears?” Described as a stranger-than-fiction political thriller, the documentary takes a deep dive into the disappearance of one of the great counterculture bands of the late 60s and early 70s.
“What the Hell Happened to Blood, Sweat & Tears” chronicles the never-before-told story about a rock group who was unknowingly embroiled in a political rat’s nest, one that involved the U.S. State Department, the Nixon White House and a controversial concert tour of Yugoslavia, Romania and Poland (countries that were behind what was then known as the Iron Curtain). As a result, they found themselves in the crossfire of a polarized America.

Exclusive: Oliver Trevena (Plane) will exec produce and star in the dramatic thriller Social Capital, from writer-director Emilio Mauro.
The upcoming film follows an ensemble of distinct characters making their way through a seemingly normal office workday that begins to unwind as they are pushed closer and closer to the brink under mounting pressure. Trevena plays Scott, who’s constantly in mental distress — toeing the line between angry and manic. Deep down, however, he’s a man trying to find his strength and purpose, while keeping it all together after his relationships, both personal and professional, start to unwind.
Mauro is producing Social Capital, with Trevena being joined as an exec producer by David Womark and Alecia Jean Lebeda. The actor — who can currently be seen starring alongside Gerard Butler, Mike Colter and more in the Lionsgate action-thriller Plane — is this month filming a role alongside Harvey Keitel and Olga Kurylenko...

Another guild award is in the books, ladies and gentlemen. The Writers Guild Awards are in the rearview mirror now, with some definite Oscar implications. For one thing, it does really now seem like Emerald Fennell is headed towards an Academy Award for her Promising Young Woman screenplay. She’s almost undoubtedly taken a strong lead over Aaron Sorkin and his script for The Trial of the Chicago 7. On the flip-side, Kemp Powers’ hopes to upset Chloe Zhao’s Nomadland in Best Adapted Screenplay took a hit when One Night in Miami… lost at WGA to Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. Could they be in line for another upset? We shall see… Here are all of the winners from the Writers Guild Awards: Film Original Screenplay “Judas and the Black Messiah” (Warner Bros) – Screenplay by Will Berson & Shaka King, Story by Will Berson & Shaka King and Kenny Lucas & Keith Lucas “Palm Springs...

Promising Young Woman writer-director Fennell took the original screenplay award at the virtual 73rd Writers Guild Awards on Sunday (March 21), less than a week after the Focus Features release earned five Oscar nominations including recognition in writing and directing categories.
Baron Cohen led the writing team on Amazon Studios’ Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, whose WGA adapted screenplay win follows Oscar nods for that category and supporting actress.

“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and “Promising Young Woman” were named the best adapted original screenplays of 2021 at the Writers Guild Awards, which took place in a virtual ceremony on Sunday.
While “Promising Young Woman” went into the show with a slight edge over “The Trial of the Chicago 7’ for the original-screenplay award,”Borat” was a decided dark horse in the adapted-screenplay category, whose nominees also included “One Night in Miami,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “News of the World’ and “The White Tiger.”
Writers Guild winners in the screenplay categories go on to win Oscars almost two-thirds of the time, although the two awards sometimes differ because the WGA is an award strictly for screenplays for movies that were made under the terms of the guild’s Minimum Basic Agreement, or similar agreements from a number of international guilds.

Before the Indie Spirits, before the Oscars, there are the guilds, and as Hollywood inches its way through a protracted awards season, it’s up to each voting body to dole out their own accolades. On Sunday night, it was time for the writers to shine, as the Writers Guild of America presented their awards for film, television, news, and more, all voted on by fellow writers. For writers, by writers!
As IndieWire’s own Anne Thompson has noted, the WGA’s film nominees are less predictive than an indication of what’s losing and gaining heat, from the missing early 2020 releases “I’m Thinking of Ending Things,” “The King of Staten Island,” and “Da 5 Bloods,” to such surging movies as “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Sound of Metal,” and “Promising Young Woman,” all of which recently earned Best Picture nods from the Academy.

A few minutes ago, the 2021 Writers Guild Award nominations were announced. Coming to us, of course, from the Writers Guild of America, this Guild is one that can clue us in a bit to how Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Screenplay could go at the Oscars. This Guild do disqualify several titles ahead of time, so it’s not likely to resemble the Academy Award lineup in full, and even excludes a potential frontrunner, but by and large, these are ten of the maybe fifteen major contenders for a win come Oscar time. Read on to see who and what were cited by the WGA today… Here now are the nominees: Original Screenplay Judas and the Black Messiah, Screenplay by Will Berson & Shaka King, Story by Will Berson & Shaka King and Kenny Lucas & Keith Lucas; Warner Bros. Palm Springs, Screenplay by Andy Siara, Story by Andy Siara & Max Barbakow; Hulu Promising Young Woman,...

Every year, the Writers Guild of America leaves out several Oscar-contending screenplays in its award nominations. But this year’s ineligible list is massive, from “Mank” to “Nomadland.” The WGA maintains jurisdiction over whether scripts are produced under a Writer’s Guild contract, and who finally gets credit on a screenplay. The guild insists on withholding non-signatories from being part of the WGA Awards.
That’s why, unlike the other guilds, every year a long list of WGA ineligible indie, British, and animated movies are excluded. A WGA nomination isn’t essential for Oscar nomination; plenty of exceptions include American indie “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” Iranian Oscar-winner “A Separation,” Oscar-winning British films “Les Miserables,” and “The Favourite,” and all Pixar animated contenders, from “Up” to “Incredibles 2.” “The Artist” and “The King’s Speech” both won Best Picture without the benefit of a WGA nomination.

Entitled “Defying Gravity: From Godspell to Wicked, A Musical Journey,” the film will commence production in 2021 and will track the highs and lows of Schwartz’s remarkable career. Scheinfeld is no stranger to music industry tales, having previously directed “Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary” and “The U.S. vs. John Lennon.”
Schwartz, as a composer and lyricist, has penned some of the most recognizable numbers in stage and film history — a list of hits that includes “Corner of the Sky,” “Colors of the Wind,” and “Day by Day.” His credits include stage shows such as “Godspell” and films such as “Pocahontas” and “Prince of Egypt.” He’s also had some failures, notably the musical bomb “The Baker’s Wife.” Schwartz is an Oscar, Tony, and Grammy winner.

“You see your whole life flash in front of you in an hour and some minutes, and then it’s like, wow, did all that really happen? Because I always felt I’m in somewhat of a dream to begin with,” says Herb Alpert, subject of a new documentary about his life from director John Scheinfeld. It’s a dream that now has a release date: “Herb Alpert Is…” is hitting theaters and VOD on Oct. 1.
The doc will be the rare movie with a three-cd soundtrack, of sorts. It’s being announced today that Oct. 2 will see the release of a box set commemorating Alpert’s career, also titled “Herb Alpert Is…” The collection is not officially a soundtrack, as only a portion of its 63 tracks appear in the movie, but it fills a larger need as the first large-scale set celebrating the entirety of the legendary trumpeter’s nearly six-decade catalog.
