In 1979 he covered music for Melody Maker.
In 1980 he founded pop culture magazine The Face.
Attended the boarding school Rugby (setting of the Victorian novel Tom Brown's Schooldays).
In 1977 he began working as a journalist for Sounds where he interviewed punk, new wave and electronic music artists.
Studied the classics at Cambridge University's Magdalene College graduating in 1975.
Freelanced for the American West Coast fanzines Search & Destroy, Bomp! and Slash.
Became a music journalist at the dawn of British punk, publishing a fanzine called London's Outrage in 1976.
