Mastodon gave a devastating performance of "Show Yourself" on Jimmy Kimmel Live Monday. Drummer Brann Dailor and bassist Troy Sanders delivered a thunderous dual vocal performance over Brent Hinds' searing guitar solo.
"Show Yourself" appears on Mastodon's new LP, Emperor of Sand, a concept record that explores life, death, time, illness and doom through the story of a man who is handed a death sentence from a desert ruler and then wanders an arid wasteland.
However, "Show Yourself" has served as a respite of sorts from the album's heavy and personal subject matter.

Mastodon rocker Bill Kelliher fell asleep while filming his cameo for 'Game of Thrones'. The guitarist has revealed he was so exhausted that he dozed off after being told to ''play dead'' when he and his bandmates Brent Hinds, Troy Sanders, Brann Dailor and Eric Saner filmed their guest slot for the HBO medieval fantasy drama. He said: ''There was a lot of playing dead which contrary to popular belief is not that easy to do. I actually fell asleep, laying down on the ground with my battle axe by the water because I was so jet-lagged.'' Bill spoke about how he and...

Don't say we didn't warn you. Looks like Mastodon is up for a little collaboration magic with Feist, and are planning to release a split 7" record with the Canadian singer-songwriter for Record Store Day next year. MTV Canada caught up with bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders, who said they were going to try and knock out recording one of her songs -- throw a little "hair and dirt on it" -- in the month of December in time for the indie record retailer holiday. In our interview last month, Leslie Feist had told me she and Mastodon had created a little mutual appreciation...

Start as you mean to go on; or in the case of the good ship Mastodon’s formative releases through Relapse Records with Lifesblood and Remission (way back in 2001 and 2002 respectively), start where you mean to sail away from (though keep yourself anchored to the start by an extra long chain allowing free sailing further away but maintaining a solid grounding at the start – or some other extravagant metaphor to describe how Mastodon have strayed away from the sound they harnessed at the beginning, but always remained completely themselves).
Mastodon have come a long way from their aggressive yet sludgy beginnings on the underground a decade or so ago, showing a growth both musically and in stature within the metal community and even the mainstream. A development from the abrasive yet tar thick sludge metal band that started out at Relapse, by way of epic, concept albums based on classic...

Rockers Mastodon are hitting Hollywood - the band has signed on to write the score for new comic book movie "Jonah Hex". Josh Brolin and Megan Fox are already lined up to star in the movie adaptation of the DC comic, which is due for release in June 2010.
And it will be accompanied by the heavy rockers' trademark sound. Bassist Troy Sanders reveals, "Director Jimmy Hayward played scenes for us and gave us all day long to create music that matched the emotion of the scene. It was flattering to be given 100 per cent creative control in this movie. It was very pure, it was real (sic) creative and totally spur of the moment."
Sanders also has an answer for critics who accuse the band of selling out: "(The budget) covered our studio fees, but it was a break even deal. (John Malkovich) Malkovich, (Josh) Brolin and Megan Fox all...

Mastodon's rumored role as composers for the "Jonah Hex" score has since been confirmed, and the band has now opened up with some details about what their tracks will sound like behind Josh Brolin, Megan Fox and John Malkovich. When "Jonah Hex" hits theaters in 2010, it will have an original sound playing behind it that channels both Pink Floyd and Neil Young.
"Some of it was heavy, some of it was very moody," Mastodon bassist Troy Sanders told Paste. "A lot of it was spacey, Melvins B-sides, Pink Floyd-like, surreal outer space, like Neil Young’s 'Dead Man.' Swirling, nausea music."
Made up of instrumentals and variations on themes for each of the main characters, Sanders spoke highly of the synergy he developed with director Jimmy Hayward, who originally called the band as a fan to request their involvement, which they agreed to without a paycheck. Though their recording costs,...

Months ago I ran into Brent Hinds, guitarist for Mastodon, who mentioned that he'd just shot a cameo for the new John Malkovich movie, and that the band would be doing some music for it. That had to be Jonah Hex, but I wasn't able to get any more details. Soon enough AICN got wind of Mastodon's score for the film, but no further info. Now some other enterprising Atlanta boys have talked to the band and got the scoop on what we can expect to hear in the film. And I'm more excited than I expected to be, as the band says that in part, the music resembles Neil Young's score for Dead Man! Paste talked to Troy Sanders, bass player for Mastodon, and he gave up a bunch of details about what the band has done for the movie. Director Jimmy Hayward actually approached the band, saying...

Soundtracks for Western films aren't typically characterized by their extreme guitar-wailing and double-bass drum pounding, but "Jonah Hex" is aiming to make an exception.
According to Ain't It Cool News, heavy metal rockers Mastodon will allegedly provide the musical score for "Jonah Hex," the Josh Brolin-starring film based on the DC Comics character. The report describes Mastodon's sound contribution as, "[needless] to say, pretty heavy!"
The Mastodon-provided soundtrack wouldn't be out of place if "Crank" filmmakers Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor remained attached as directors for the Warner bros.-produced film, as was the original plan—but even after their departure, the pair's script remained in place for the Jimmy Hayward-directed "Hex." Perhaps the screenplay called for some serious guitar thrashing.
Mastodon was formed in 1999 and consists of bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders, guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds, guitarist Bill Kelliher and drummer Brann Dailor. Despite their short 10-year existence, Mastodon's...
