I noticed something curious. Director Siddharth Anand of the film ‘Fighter’ says that his film flopped because 90% of Indian moviegoers have never sat in an airplane! I was amazed, amused, but, most of all, I was worried. Worried, because this is how the maker of a Rs 400-crore film thinks!
My mind instantly went back to Shakti Samanta’s ‘An Evening In Paris’ (1967), where a bikini-clad Sharmila Tagore is sea skiing as Shammi Kapoor courts her hanging from a helicopter. After learning what Malhotra had said to explain why his film had failed, I wondered how many people hang from a helicopter to court a woman! I don’t know anybody who has done such a thing and still, ‘An Evening In Paris’ was a major hit! I can cite hundreds of such examples.
Of course, the audience must first identify with the subject of a film. The other factor...

Music composer Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma, of Laxmikant-Pyarelal fame, has been honoured with the prestigious Padma Bhushan, not only as a celebration of his musical prowess, but also in acknowledgment of his role in defining the golden era of Hindi film music.
The octogenarian learnt the basics of music from his father, the renowned trumpeteer of his time, Ramprasad ‘Babaji’ Sharma. He then aced the violin under the guidance of the Goan musician Anthony Gonsalves, whom he went on to immortalise in the song ‘My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves’, which was picturised on Amitabh Bachchan (who also contributed to the vocals) in the 1977 film ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’.
Pyarelal teamed up with Laxmikant Kudalkar and they worked in more than 750 Hindi films between 1963 to 1998. They collaborated with the biggest names of the industry, including Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Shakti Samanta, Manmohan Desai and Yash Chopra.

Merry Christmas
Starring Katrina Kaif, Vijay Sethupathi
Directed by Sriram Raghavan
Yadhoom is the home-made whiskey that Albert’s uncle, played by Tinu Anand , recommends as the spirit of the season: create your own yadhoom and have a good time in life.
This is what Sriram Raghavan does. His yadhoom may not match with yours. But heck, life is what you make of it. Merry Christmas is not a merry film. Come to think of it, it is not even Christmassy. Albert (Vijay Sethupathi) and Maria (Katrina Kaif) are two wistful souls who collide on Christmas eve in neon-lit Bombay (this is when Mumbai was Bombay) in the 1970s when , Rajesh Khanna, Shakti Samanta’s Aradhana and Kati Patang and R D Burman ruled the charts.

New Delhi, Dec 30 (Ians) Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has appreciated the beauty of the legendary actress Sharmila Tagore, and recalled how during the shoot of the romantic thriller ‘An Evening in Paris’, the latter stopped the traffic in France.
Sharmila is regarded as one of the Indian cinema’s most accomplished actresses. She is the recipient of the National Film Award, and Padma Bhushan. Her famous works include ‘Kashmir Ki Kali’, ‘Waqt’, ‘Anupama’, ‘An Evening in Paris’, ‘Aamne Saamne’, ‘Satyakam’, ‘Aradhana’, ‘Amar Prem’, ‘Daag’, ‘Chupke Chupke’, ‘Mausam’, among numerous others.
She married Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, the titular Nawab of Pataudi and Bhopal and former captain of the Indian cricket team in 1968. They had three children: actor Saif Ali Khan; Saba and Soha Ali Khan.

By celebrating her 90th birthday with a live performance in Dubai on September 8, Asha Bhosle will be proving yet again that she not only has a tremendous zest for life, but also an ebullience that has enabled her to rule Hindi film music across many genres, from classical to cabaret numbers, sing for generations of composers and audiences, and bring home every award that counts, barring the Bharat Ratna, which she rightfully deserves.
I first met Asha Bhosle after the release of ‘Hare Krishna Hare Ram’ (1971), where I was assisting Dev Anand, and met her last as recently as in 2019 at a music festival in Jaipur, where she was surrounded by friends and admirers, and yet she mentioned to all those present how long our association has been.
I have had the good fortune of writing the lyrics of two of her ageless hit numbers — ‘Jab Chhaye Mera Jadoo’ (‘Lootmaar’; 1980) and ‘Suniye,...

The industry churned out as many as 180 to 200 films a year not long ago and all of them for theatrical releases. There were no video, Ott or telefilms in those days. Even two top-draw stars did not mind their films releasing simultaneously and, usually, both did very well.
An undeclared understanding would be arrived at when two major films avoided clashing. Yet, there was rarely an occasion when a film enjoyed a solo release. The norm was one major film and anywhere between one to three or more other films per week. If the big film drew full houses, the other films benefited with what was called the overflow of that big film.
All films got equal playtime and, as a result, a small film stood as much a chance to score big as the major film of the week. The biggest example is that of ‘Sholay’ and ‘Jai Santoshi...

Holi has a special place among all Indian festivals given that it blurs differences and brings out the vibrant side of people. The festival is about colours clubbed with fun and masti, there’s no denying that good music is an integral part of the celebration.
Bollywood has many of them to offer to make your Holi celebrations more vibrant, colourful and unforgettable.
As the nation gets drenched in the colours of Holi, here are some of the songs that need to be on your Holi playlist to kick the Fomo:
1. ‘Rang Barse’: “Ah, I see you’re a man (or a woman) of culture as well,” is the reaction you will draw from your fellow Holi mates if you boost the speakers with this track. A classic, rather a timeless one that can instantly set the mood of the festival, ‘Rang Barse’, from the film ‘Silsila’ and sung...

The year was 1986. Rajesh Khanna was no more the phenomenon but the aura that he had created for himself through the songs that he had crooned on the silver screen was manifest on a screen made out of sacks on which were sewed tattered white sheets. The location- Chakia, a hinterland about 80 kms from Varanasi as the crow flies. The film shown was Raaz in a village godown. His songs were rewinded umpteen number of times, the spool could not withstand the pressure, and the film did not reach its logical end. However, nobody complained, as the fans were enthralled in Rajesh Khanna’s magic.
Were he to be alive today he would have been 82 years of age; his physical self may not be there, but his magic continues to swoon the audiences.

A yet-to-be-released film comes up with a display ad offering a 25 per cent discount on admission rates. Has that ever happened before? Now, in the multiplex era, or in the single screen era? It has not. Ajay Devgn’s ‘Drishyam 2’ opens on November 18, but the advance booking has already commenced and for those who booked opening-day tickets on October 24 and 25 were offered a discount of 25 per cent!
Does it make business sense to lure viewers to book tickets for a film due three weeks later on the day when they have two new releases in the cinemas – ‘Ram Setu’ and ‘Thank God’, both fresh Diwali offerings. If cinemas are not drawing footfalls for new films, can one expect viewers for a forthcoming film?
What is strange is that no such offer was made for another Ajay Devgn film, ‘Thank God’, released on October 25. It is all happening now. Cinema viewing...

From a family of prominent lawyers, he was expected to follow in their footsteps, but instead chose a career in the fledgling Hindi film industry – and uncharacteristically, not as a hero. Virtually dragooned by his legendary boss taking over a lead role, despite the director’s opposition, he, in his first-ever take, muffed up a simple scene with the heroine, and then, left the villain with a fractured leg.
That, in 1936, was the rather farcical start of the career of Ashok Kumar, who was born on this day in 1911.
Undaunted, he went on to establish himself not only as Hindi cinema’s first superstar as the 1940s began, but also one who was known for his air of naturalness and his willingness to reinvent himself and experiment with playing morally ambiguous or anti-hero roles.
At the appropriate time, he moved on to playing more mature roles in line with his age,...

Bollywood actress Sara Ali Khan is often seen talking about her grandmother and veteran actress Sharmila Tagore and recently, she spoke about playing her on-screen if a biopic is made on Sharmila.
The ‘Atrangi Re’ actress, while answering a question asked by her fan on portraying her grandmother in her biopic, said that it is not easy to match her grace while portraying her in a biopic.
“She’s so graceful. I don’t know if I’m graceful,” replied Sara.
Tagore is known for her remarkable performances in movies such as Shakti Samanta’s 1964 hit ‘Kashmir Ki Kali’, her chemistry with Rajesh Khanna was also liked by the audience in the films like ‘Aradhana’, ‘Safar’, ‘Amar Prem’ and others.

Hum Do Hamare Do(Disney-Hotstar)
Starring Ratna Pathak Shah, Paresh Rawail, Rajkummar Rao, Kriti Sanon
Not even the wonderful Ratna Pathak Shah and Paresh Rawal could rescue this dreary rom-com from sinking so low into the abyss that it’s hard to find one single moment of joy from the mirthless mess.
On the premise level it sounds promising. Rajkummar Rao is Dhruv ,an orphan craving for a, awww, family. Ever-bubbly Kriti Sanon , the new-age Preity Zinta, craves for a Bunty with a large heart and a larger family. So what does Dhruv do? He hires two long-in-love estranged people Purushottam(Rawal) and Deepti(Pathak) to play his parents.
There is an unintentional tribute to Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Golmaal here. In that film Amol Palekar(who was to middle-of-the-road cinema in the 1970s what Rajkummar Rao is now to the romcom industry) had hired Ratna Pathak Shah’s mother...

The Ott platforms operating in India over the last four years have come a full circle. Having so far sanctioned episodic streaming content, and bought ready-to-beam films, these platform-operating companies will now produce films. This ventures will be undertaken, albeit, in collaboration with established production houses, preferably with one run and owned by an actor or a regular production house with a good standing. Makes things easier that way.
Amazon Prime is the first to make an announcement to actively get involved in filmmaking. The company's first venture will be Ram Setu.
Disney+ Hotstar is expected to enter production as well, and an announcement can be expected by September this year.

The silver screen was the term that described the cinema experience in the dark of a cinema hall. The two people who conceived and executed this magic were the writer and the director. A writer dream't up a story and its background, as in where it all happened, and the director executed those dreams of the writer. But, the one who really made it possible for the two was the art director.
The art director created a location, and the ambience the writer imagined, in a studio set measuring just a few hundred square meters. However huge it may be, the art director made you believe that what you were watching on screen was taking place in Shimla or on the Hooghly River in Bengal or a palatial bungalow of a rich man, or even a cruise liner or a warship! The breed called art directors could get into the writer's mind.

Darbaan (Zee5)
Starring Sharib Hashmi, Sharad Kelkar, Rasika Dugal, Flora Saini and Harsh Chhaya
Directed by Bipin Nadkarni
There is something about Rabindranath Tagore’s stories that lends itself to great cinema. Darbaan is not a great film. But it’s a very good piece of cinema. Artistically imagined and gently executed, it has the very accomplished Sharib Hashmi playing a simple caregiver in a feudal family (the story is translocated from the end of zamindari to the takeover of the coalmines in Dhanbad in the early 1970s) whose life is a litany of subservience.
Hashmi immerses himself in the role with a furious passion that reminded me of Ashok Kumar in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Aashirwaad. Sharib Hashmi is a great actor destined to secrete his greateness in small meaningful films while actors with not even a grain of his talent are strutting around as stars in Bollywood.

One of the finest poets of 20th century Urdu literature, Majrooh Sultanpuri was born on this day 101 years ago. His contribution to the Hindi film industry as a lyricist is also phenomenal, so much so that any writing or research work on the Bollywood music scene would be incomplete without his mention.
Born Asrar ul Hassan Khan on October 1, 1919 in Sultanpur, currently in Uttar Pradesh. Sultanpuri has penned countless memorable songs in his career spanning six decades, and has collaborated with talented musicians spanning generations, from Sachin Dev Burman to Rahul Dev Burman to Jatin-Lalit. He has been honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award among numerous other recognitions.
It is impossible to sum up such a genius' oeuvre in a list of a few songs. Ians takes a look into some of Majrooh's popular songs that you may want to hum while you think of the great creative artiste.

Singer Lata Mangeshkar, dubbed Nightingale of India, turns 90 on Sept. 28 and in honor of the woman who made the Guinness Book of World Records for 25,000 songs recorded we at Variety chose 25 of our favorite tunes from Bollywood. There were many more we could choose, including duets with Hemant Kumar or Mohammed Rafi but we didn’t want the list to become too unwieldy. Mangeshkar started singing professionally at age 14 and Bollywood actresses from the 1940s to 2000s have lip synced to her on screen. Acting legend Dilip Kumar once said of her: “The way the fragrance of a flower has no color, a flowing spring or cool breezes belong to no country, the smile of an innocent child has no religion, similarly Lata Mangekshar’s voice is a miracle of nature’s creativity.”

In Shakti Samanta’s 1971 romantic classic Amar Prem, the lead pair Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore never get a chance to get intimate in the way men and women get in real and reel life….no songs, no exchange of affection, no sex….And yet Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore in Shakti Samanta’s Amar Prem were the epitome of romanticism.
I see the same same sublimity in Varun Dhawan’s eyes in October, director Shoojit Sircar and writer Juhi Chuturvedi’s most romantic association to date. Varun Dhawan plays a housekeeper at a post hotel in love with the idea of love. The girl whom he follows into the ICU of a hospital barely acknowledges him at their workplace.

Interviewing Sharmila Tagore is always a dream come true. A favourite, she ruled my heart with her glamour and talent in the films of Satyajit Ray specially Apur Sansar, then Shakti Samanta’s Aradhana and Amar Prem and Basu Bhattacharya’s Aavishkar and Grihapravesh. No actress combines the best of the East and the West so fluentlyRead More

The Bollywood Fantasy. Mumbai the mecca of the make-believe lures hundreds every year to their near-inevitable doom. When was the last time we saw a film about the lure of Bollywood that draws aspirants like moths to flame?
Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Guddi? Meraj’s under-rated Palkon Ki Chaon Mein? Count director K D Satyam’s Bollywood Diaries, a film that comes to us without hype or hope, among the rare films that tell us what the Bollywood obsession can do its followers. The well-written 3-episode film features three Bollywood-fixated junkies so consumed and obsessed by the thought of seeing themselves on screen that they forget to live normal lives anymore.
The three protagonists are played with sturdily sensitively and splendidly by Ashish Vidyarthi, a government servant in Bhilai, who at age 52 decides to fulfil his long-cherished Bollywood dream of becoming an actor, Raima Sen, a sex worker from Kolkata who...

Film: "Rajjo"; Cast: Kangana Ranaut, Paras Arora, Prakash Raj and Mahesh Manjrekar; Director: Vishwas Patil; Rating: *1/2 - falls flat.
Films about prostitutes, with or without a heart of gold, have fascinated filmmakers and viewers from the time Nargis and Meena Kumari did "Adalat" and "Pakeezah", respectively.
Then there was Sharmila Tagore carrying the concept of the pristine prostitute to the peaks of sublimity in Shakti Samanta's "Amar Prem".
With time, the concept of the prostitute with a halo has lost its sheen. Virginity and sexual sacrifices are no longer the sacrosanct commodities they once.

From its opening montage of a young rustic girl watching her callous husband bring home another wife, to the dying moments when the woman, now in her twilight years, is taken away to the relative comfort of her foster-son’s home as the festivities of Durga Puja break out on the streets of Kolkata… Amar Prem is a glorious homage to that favourite Bollywood archetype: the golden-hearted prostitute.
That Sharmila Tagore plays the woman whom men of all ages gravitate to in pursuit of some heavy duty nurturing is a very happy situation for the screenplay. In the film a 7-year old boy and a 30-plus man both desire the same kind of emotional attention from her. This prostitute is not about sex. She is about soul. Sharmila Tagore has been honoured with a Doctorate of Arts from Edinburgh Napier University, UK for her contributions towards Indian cinema. The 67 year old veteran actress has the distinction of being a household name both in Hindi and Bengali cinema, a rare achievement which not many have managed to secure. Ms Tagore was awarded with her doctorate on 25 October 2012 in the presence of around 1000 students during the university’s autumn graduation ceremonies. She expressed her gratitude to the university for being presented with this prestigious award in a public statement. “It is indeed a privilege to be conferred an Honorary Degree by Edinburgh Napier University. It recognizes the significant influence of Indian Cinema on the global cultural arena and the small role that I have played in its history. As we celebrate a hundred years of Indian Cinema, this is both a happy and humbling moment.”

It is being reported that Aditya Samanta; the grandson of legendary filmmaker Shakti Samanta, wants to remake his grandfather’s 1969 classic hit Aradhana. It starred Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore in the leading roles and is famous for being the film which rocketed Khanna to superstardom. The film did overwhelmingly well during its initial release and went onto win a number of Filmfare Awards, including Best Film, Best Actress (Sharmila Tagore) and Best Male Playback Singer for Kishore Kumar. Aradhana is also noted for its enthralling soundtrack composed by S.D. Burman and which has become an institutional classic.
Despite the film being perfect as it is, nevertheless, Aditya is ardent to re-create it and reiterate its narrative to a new generation of audiences. In a recent interview to a leading Indian newspaper, Aditya stated the following: “Aradhana is the most commercial mainstream film I have seen till date and I...
