In April 2001, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) named
Salgado, an internationally renowned Brazilian photographer, as its
'special representative'. The nomination came at the opening of
Salgado's photo exhibition titled "Migrations", the result of a
seven-year project depicting the global displacement of people,
especially of children.
