- A practical joker. He once set a trigger that released 500 ping-pong balls on the head of Jerry Juhl when he sat down at his desk.
- Jim Henson said he was responsible for much of the Muppet style that people think of. Don would call the sketches Jim Henson drew "the essence". He also invented "The Magic Triangle" which refers to the area between the focal point of the eyes in relation to the nose and mouth. He felt the position of the eyes finalized the character of the muppet more than anything else.
- The first puppet he made for Jim Henson was Rowlf the Dog in 1962 for a Purina Dog Food commercial.
- An expert Muppet maker, he built many of the characters for the first season of The Muppet Show (1976).
