- In the early fifties, whilst serving abroad in the army, composer John Barry noticed an advertisement in Downbeat magazine placed by Russo, offering a correspondence course in 'Composition and Orchestration for the Jazz Orchestra'. Barry jumped at the chance and even found a way of paying for the course in American dollars, by acquainting himself with an Armenian shopkeeper willing to deal in the currency.
