Over five seasons, iZombie morphed from buddy cop comedy to zombie drama. Mark salutes the CW’s quirky police procedural series…
Warning: This feature contains spoilers for all five seasons of iZombie, up to and including the series finale.
With Game of Thrones ending its White Walker plotline a little too early for some viewers and The Walking Dead apparently set to trudge on indefinitely, leave it to iZombie to bring its zombie serial to a timely end. Created by Veronica Mars' Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright, the CW show started in 2015 and recently wrapped up its fifth and final season.
Starring Rose McIver in the lead role, iZombie is a very loose adaptation of the comic series of the same name. Published by DC’s recently shuttered Vertigo imprint, the comics have Liv Moore as a gravedigger who takes on the memories and personality traits of...

After a stumbling second outing, the third episode of iZombie took the series back to basics. We have a murder of the week scenario and all the zombie hijinks that go with it along with sprinklings of further plot development.
In this episode, two dancers have been murdered and Liv eats the brains of the female (Nancy) which exposes their co-dependant relationship at first and then eats the brains of the male (Gulliver). Nancy is annoyingly needy and Gulliver is an enabler of it. It’s quite an interesting case to watch unfold and has its fair share of twists and turns from beginning to end. It has a rather anticlimactic end but the scenes we get before it are entertaining enough to accept that.

Season 5 got off to a great start last week but iZombie falters with its second episode where it feels like they’re trying to do too much, too soon. There is a lot of plot to cover in the second outing and not all of it is done very well.
During ‘Dead Lift’, we have a few character deaths (Jordan and Baron), Liv and Clive find out that the video about zombies murdering a human was fake, Peyton wanting to drum positive PR for zombies, Major pretending to kill some of his own soldiers but ices them instead, the foster kids from the premiere make it across the border to New Seattle after Baron is killed off, Liv and Major have a dinner together, Liv eats the brains of a fitness guru. iZombie has had an interesting evolution over the past four years. When it started, it was a typical murder of the week show with a self-aware zombie twist. As we head into the final season, it shows how this series has become more relevant in mirroring the darker things that are happening in the world now.
Season five begins six months after the events of the season four finale. Major oversees Fillmore Graves and it is in better hands with him leading things (such as no guillotine executions) but it’s still martial law even if it isn’t as brutal. However, tensions between humans and zombies rise when a human woman is mauled and seemingly killed by zombies in a viral video.
As is common with minority groups, zombies are more vulnerable in this situation.

Whether in Neptune, New York, or somewhere else entirely, it looks like “Veronica Mars” is on its way back again. This time, Hulu is the intended destination for a miniseries that will continue the character’s story, with star Kristen Bell and writer/creator Rob Thomas returning in their respective roles.
Fans of “The Good Place” need not fear, though: According to reports, the plan is for Bell to be able to star in both projects as the production plans are being straightened out.
Rumblings of a new chapter in the “Veronica Mars” saga have never fully died down, even after the 2014 movie that picked up where the series left off. Last fall, cub reporter Ryan Hansen broke the news in an IndieWire Facebook Live conversation that a miniseries was in the works.

I think it would be fair to say that iZombie season 4 has been problematic at parts but the finale for season 4 wraps up this season of highs and lows very well and goes above and beyond the call of duty.
The gist of the finale is that it’s a race against time to save Liv and Levon before they are executed and Major, Ravi, Clive and the returning Peyton pull out all the stops to achieve this. First, they use Levon’s documentary about the underground railroad to get the public on the side of Renegade and turn the people against Fillmore Graves. Knowing there would be a riot, Chase chooses to make the execution private and changes the time but the damage has been done as even Fillmore Grave soldiers are questioning him.

To cut straight to the chase, the penultimate episode of iZombie Season 4 is incredibly well done. Last week started to pick up the pace on storylines and this episode continues that trend so it looks like Monday’s finale is set to be a dramatic and action-filled one.
If there’s a theme of the episode, it’s the lengths that people go to for the people they love. Major is the first example of this as he kidnaps Liv and takes her out of New Seattle so she doesn’t turn herself in to Fillmore Graves to save a human smuggler (Curtis). The little twist to this is that they both eat the brains of an old married couple who absolutely adored each other and there are many lines and moments that...

So far, my reviews of iZombie haven’t been completely positive but with this latest episode, the show starts to address a few of the complaints that I’ve mentioned previously.
In 4×11, Liv eats the brain of a germophobe which is played for pretty effective laughs and my favourite moment has to be when someone sneezes loudly in the interrogation room and Liv practically throws herself across the room in response. It’s one of the better used brains in recent weeks and if next week’s trailer is anything to go by, it might be the last of the season but we’ll have to wait and see.
The first subplot to mention is Peyton. Peyton doesn’t get much attention this week but Peyton has to go to Washington to represent...

I said that last week’s episode of iZombie was a bit of a structural mess but it was entertaining regardless. This week, however, I can’t say the same as this feels like a filler episode. It seems to drag to the point where it’s uncertain how the show is going to have so many plot threats pay off by the finale which is three weeks away.
In this episode, Liv eats the brain of a renegade cop which means get ready for a few Die Hard puns which is typical iZombie humour. The good thing about the show’s humour is that it is incredibly self-aware and meta but this episode is more style than substance so it makes the bad parts of this episode more apparent.

The latest episode of iZombie was a very plot driven one and somewhat different from the usual formula. However, this is nothing new for the series as this seems to happen once per season. Luckily, this episode doesn’t fail to be entertaining.
The latest murder to happen involves a white rapper and seeing Liv on white rapper brain is funny but not overplayed. Rose McIver isn’t a terrible rapper by any means but it’s played enough for laughs without crossing into face-palm territory. The murder of this rapper is solved pretty quickly instead of taking up a majority of the episode like it usually does so getting a break from the usual routine is rather interesting.

It’s that time of year at the broadcast networks, as executives screen new pilots and start plotting their fall schedules. That means shows “on the bubble” – the ones that still haven’t been handed their fate – will also find out soon whether they’ll be back for another season.
We’re not taking any chances. Before the networks unleash their new lineups (set to be announced the week of May 15), IndieWire’s TV team has picked the six series on the chopping block that we’d most advocate trying to save. From comedy to drama, our message is clear: Save These Shows.

Two episodes were provided prior to broadcast.
One thing that’s become apparent to me over the past two years is how criminally underrated iZombie is. Sure, the landscape for comic book based TV shows is larger than ever and, while most of them are very impressive, they tend to lean toward the superhero genre. Perhaps that’s why Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright’s loose adaptation has been somewhat overshadowed.
I use the term “loose” because they took a markedly different Vertigo comic and turned it into what’s essentially a police procedural – another genre that isn’t overexposed by any stretch of the imagination – and infused it with elements of horror, drama, comedy and romance. Okay, the procedural aspect is but one cog in the machine, but if we’re to categorize, that’s where it falls, more or less.

At some point, all good zombie shows must die. If the series is fortunate and not canceled prematurely, it can decide exactly how to end its story. But when it comes to the conflict between humans and the undead, what are the best possible story outcomes?
As The CW’s “iZombie” enters its third season, IndieWire asked co-creators Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright about the most viable end games for zombie shows.
Of course, not all zombie shows are created equal. Most of them feature zombies that are mindless and hungry, like “The Walking Dead,” “Z Nation” and “Ash vs. Evil Dead.” But with “iZombie” and Netflix’s “Santa Clarita Diet,” zombies are people too. They’re pretty much the same as they were before, except for that pesky appetite for human flesh and brainssss!

“iZombie” isn’t returning until midseason, but at least Comic-Con gave us some scoop of what to expect.
Executive producers Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright, along with cast members Rose McIver (Liv), David Anders (Blaine), Rahul Kohli (Ravi), Malcolm Goodwin (Clive) and Aly Michalka (Peyton) appeared on stage in San Diego to tease the upcoming third season. Check out what we learned below. Warning: Minor spoilers below.
“Ficus” is her safe word. This season, Liv will eat a dominatrix’s brain, McIver revealed. “I’m going to have to clear my browser history repeatedly,” she added, talking about researching the role. When asked about her safe word, the EPs joked (or perhaps were serious) that it was “ficus.”
A “Major” reconnection? “I would love Liv and Major to work out, but I feel right now that there’s bigger fish to fry,” McIver said about the on-again, off-again couple, and then added,...

Given that it was the first to wrap its season, it makes perfect sense that Warner Home Entertainment would unleash the complete second season of the CW’s iZombie on disc ahead of the superheroes coming in August. The 4-disc DVD set is coming on Tuesday while Warner Archive will be simultaneously releasing iZombie the Complete First Season and iZombie the Complete Second Season on Blu-ray.
The series is loosely based on the Chris Roberson and Michael Allred Vertigo series and is a quiet success, garnering solid ratings and reviews but without the sturm and drang of its fellow DC properties. In the hands of executive producers Rob Thomas (Veronica Mars) and Diane Ruggiero-Wright (The Ex List), they keep the mood light, the characters quirky, and the plots engaging.

I haven't checked in on iZombie in a while, so let's talk about last night's episode — and season 2 as a whole as we wait for next week's finale — coming up just as soon as I clear cases like Frank Drebin but get treated like Nordberg... "Reflections of the Way Liv Used to Be" was the first iZombie episode I can recall to not use the full (and excellent) opening credits sequence, which is a move shows make when an hour is particularly busy. Given all the stories the show has been spinning this year about Max Rager, Major's side career turning zombies into popsicles, the war for Seattle drug supremacy, Ravi working on a cure, etc., not to mention how much time the Brain of the Week mystery eats up, it's a wonder the show doesn't have to shave down those credits every week to fit everything in. If I'm being honest,...

The way CW president Mark Pedowitz is talking at the TCA winter press tour, it sounds like both the Supernatural and iZombie TV series are more likely to be renewed than cancelled. Currently in its 11th season, Supernatural has performed well for the network, despite changing broadcast nights five times, during its long run.
While creator Eric Kripke left the show after its fifth season, Supernatural stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki (and that gorgeous black '67 Impala, Baby) have continued to re-up their contracts. Throughout the second season of iZombie, Major has been maintaining a very delicate balance in trying to hide all his secrets from Liv, Vaughn, Ravi, and Gilda, and the effect has clearly taken a toll on him, as evidenced by the Utopium addiction. His relationship with Liv, however, has worked towards stabilising him somewhat, but that relationship crumbles and falls once again in a fun pair of episodes leading into the midseason break.
Learning more about Clive is a long overdue aspect of the show, and it’s good to see the focus turn to knowing more about him. While it comes during a case, it’s still fun to find out more about Babineaux’s personal life,...

iZombie, Season 2, Episode 9: “Cape Town”
Written by Diane Ruggiero-Wright
Directed by Mairzee Almas
