Next year will be 40 years since the premiere of Barry Levinson’s and Chris Columbus’ Young Sherlock Holmes, in which Nicholas Rowe (now 57) portrayed a young version of the famous detective. The screenplay was just based on Doyle’s original characters and was supposed to present the famous detective to a younger audience. And while we were promised a sequel, it never happened and the movie became a part of history, and still a much-beloved children’s film. But, it has been confirmed that we are going to go back to a younger Sherlock Holmes, although in a somewhat different format.
Namely, Amazon Prime has confirmed that an eight-episode series titled Young Sherlock has been ordered, with a tentative release date set for sometime in 2025, although details on the series are still scarce, we do – as you will soon see – have some important updates for you.

Plot: Based on the New York Times best-selling book written by Ben Macintyre, this six-episode limited series dramatizes the true story of two British spies and lifelong friends, Nicholas Elliott and Kim Philby. The latter became the most notorious British defector and Soviet double agent in history. Philby’s deeply personal betrayal, uncovered at the height of the Cold War, resulted in the gutting of British and American intelligence.
Review: The story of Kim Philby, one of the most notorious spies discovered during the Cold War, has been told many times over in both books and documentaries. While speculative stories and alternate histories abound, Philby’s tale has inspired John Le Carre’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and the Matt Damon film The Good Shepherd. While these stories and adaptations have been interesting, the true story is fascinating in its own right. The new limited series A Spy Among Friends...

"He has lied to you, and he has used you, when are you going to accept that?" MGM+ has debuted the full official trailer for the British spy series titled A Spy Among Friends, arriving for streaming in March. The service formerly known as Epix has re-branded as MGM+, with a big line-up set to launch this spring. "The epic true story of Kim Philby, the Cold War's most infamous spy, from the 'master storyteller' and author of Prisoners of the Castle." It's an adaptation of the book of the same name. The UK mini-series stars the very talented actors Guy Pearce and Damian Lewis as Nicholas Elliott and Kim Philby, real-life 1960s British spies who, despite their opposing allegiances, developed a life-long friendship. It reminds me of the other British spy film The Courier (aka Ironbark) from a few years ago - also about two spies who were friends.

NBA legend and activist Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is teaming up with History on a documentary on the African American experience during the Revolutionary War.
Titled “Black Patriots,” the doc tells the story of some of the most significant Black figures from the time period including Crispus Attucks, Peter Salem, Phillis Wheatley and James Armistead Lafayette. “Since retiring from the NBA, I’ve been writing books and articles to bring awareness to the public of the many overlooked African-Americans in history who have contributed so much to American society. ‘Black Patriots’ chronicles the surprising, crucial, and often ignored role the black people played in the creation of our country,” said Abdul-Jabbar. “Here’s something we never learned in school: George Washington said that African-Americans were pivotal to winning the Revolutionary War.

1985 was the year of Back To The Future, Rocky IV and Rambo II. But what about these 20 movies, that also deserve a fair share of love?
Thirty years ago, Marty McFly was riding high with the smash hit Back To The Future, while Sylvester Stallone enjoyed his most successful year yet with the one-two punch of Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rocky IV. It was an era of family sci-fi and teen comedies and bullet-spraying action, where The Breakfast Club and Teen Wolf rubbed shoulders with Death Wish 3 and Commando. Then there were low-key dramas like Out Of Africa and The Color Purple, which were both awards magnets at the Oscars.
Away from all those big hits, 1985 saw the release of a wealth of less successful movies, some of which found a second life on the then-huge home video circuit. Here's our pick of 20 underappreciated films from the year of Rambo,...

Despite suffering from a bout of hay fever (your author was suffering too, dear reader), Bill was warm and friendly, and we bonded over our mutual love for the Disney animated film Beauty And The Beast (which he is currently directing a live action remake of).
How did Mr Holmes come about? Was this a project that you were keen to do?
Actually, Anne Carey, the producer, came to me with the script, based on...

Ian McKellen plays a retired Sherlock Holmes, in Bill Condon’s sensitive film about ageing, death, fact and fiction…
Seventeen years after Gods And Monsters, an embellished account of the last days of director James Whale, Bill Condon, Ian McKellen and composer Carter Burwell reunite to tell another sensitive story about a retired great contemplating his past. This time, the retiree is Conan Doyle’s fictional creation Sherlock Holmes (McKellen), as imagined through Mitch Cullin’s celebrated 2005 novel A Slight Trick Of The Mind.
Layers of fiction and history stack on top of each other to build Mr Holmes, a film that flits between the 1940s and 1910s as our hero struggles to remember the details of his last, traumatising case, one that prompted his exile to the Sussex countryside.
The film presents Sherlock Holmes as a real person frustrated by the “worthless” fiction and “vulgar” fame that surrounds him.

One film that was beloved by some children of the 1970s and 1980s was "Young Sherlock Holmes," Barry Levinson's 1985 feature starring 19-year-old Scottish actor Nicholas Rowe as the Baker Street Detective. In that film, the character first meets John Watson at a boarding school and together they solve a mystery.
Almost three decades later, filmmaker Bill Condon is at work on "Mr. Holmes" - a film adaptation of Mitch Cullin's novel "A Slight Trick Of The Mind". This take explores the other side of Holmes' life - as a long retired 93-year-old beekeeper growing frustrated as his mental faculties have begun to fade.
The legendary Sir Ian McKellen is playing the elderly Holmes, but today Empire reports that the now 47-year-old Rowe is also onboard to cameo as Sherlock Holmes. Even more surprising, he won't be appearing as a younger version of McKellen's Holmes in flashback either.

When die-hard Sherlockians - or Holmesians, depending on your taste - hear the name Nicholas Rowe, they're bound to think of the Scottish actor's turn as the young Sherlock Holmes in Young Sherlock Holmes, the 1985 movie directed by Barry Levinson and written by Christopher Columbus. Most thought his days as Holmes ended then when he was 19, but thanks to an ingenious cameo in next year's Mr Holmes, he will return as the great consulting detective at the age of 47... in a rather wonderful fashion. The story of Mr Holmes, which director Bill Condon adapted with Jeffrey Hatcher from Mitch Cullin's novel A Slight Trick Of The Mind, takes place in 1947 when Holmes is 93, long retired to his Sussex beekeeping and frustrated by his diminishing power of recollection. Within this world, Holmes is as famous as you'd expect, and has had movies made of his life. It's in one of these films,...

We take a look back at the geek movies that have hinted at sequels that were never made, and we'd really like to see...
Nb: The following contains inevitable spoilers. If you haven't seen a film in a particular entry, feel free to skip to the next one.
In some cases, it comes as a relief when a threatened sequel fails to materialise. The end of the infamous Mac And Me, for example, sees its family of cretinous aliens drive off in a pink Cadillac, a speech bubble chillingly telling us, "We'll be back!" Thankfully, Mac And Me 2 has yet to materialise, despite the original film's near-legendary status.
Every so often, though, we'll come across a movie that strongly hints at more adventures to come, but for a variety of reasons - usually financial ones - the sequel never got made. To illustrate this,...

Cameron sings the praises of 25 classic and modern Doctor Who adventures that went underappreciated. See what made the cut below...
Doctor Who fans can be an odd bunch at times (and by that I mean all the time), what's gold to one is dross to another. And when you think everyone is agreed on a genuine stinker (Timelash, for example), you'll find it has admirers in abundance. But what's here are some of the stories that, for whatever reason, get overlooked, underseen and, perhaps, undervalued - in no particular order.
The Awakening
Two-parters often get forgotten about (in classic Doctor Who at any rate) and this Peter Davison story, whilst perhaps best known to Who fans for a famous blooper featuring a horse, has some tremendous imagery and beautiful location shooting. Best of all is the villain of the piece, The Malus, who put the willies...

In 2009 the ex Mr Madonna (otherwise known as Guy Ritchie) called upon the unlikely pairing of Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law to bring back to the screen two of crime fiction’s greatest heroes – Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson.
The pair are up there amongst the most filmed literary characters, Holmes has been sticking his nose into other people’s business since the earliest days of the cinema with one of the first versions being a Danish short from 1908 pitting him against his arch nemesis Moriarty and Raffles, the Victorian gentleman thief – now that really would have been a showdown worth seeing.
So, as Ritchie prepares to throw Downey and Law together again, we decided to do some sleuthing ourselves and find six of the pipe smoking detective’s best screen adventures. The results have proved anything but elementary!

Roland Emmerich's Anonymous, screening at the Toronto film festival, is set to re-ignite Shakespearean conspiracy theories
Shakespearians often groan when the Shakespeare authorship conspiracy theory raises its head. But it often does, especially for those of us connected with Shakespeare's birthplace. Or perhaps you've chatted about the issue in taxis, on trains, or during long flights? Sometimes I hear "it doesn't matter, we still have the plays." The fact is it matters utterly, otherwise there would be no conspiracy theories in first place. And there would be no new film called Anonymous (from Roland Emmerich, the director of Godzilla and Independence Day) trying to insinuate itself into the popular imagination. Suddenly, those questions are going to be cropping up more often.
Anonymous will put over the view that the plays and poems should be attributed to the Earl of Oxford, a nominee first suggested by Thomas Looney (pronounced "Loney") in 1920. Let's get this straight.

Super 8 finally arrives in UK cinemas this week, shepherded by Steven Spielberg. Here are nine more movies he produced, that seem to have unfairly fallen off the radar…
Steven Spielberg has a well-known and extensive set of credits as a director. And as producer and executive producer, he's also put his name to movies such as The Goonies, Transformers, Men In Black and Gremlins.
But what of the Spielberg-produced films that fly a little futher under the radar? We're going to salute a collection of them right now...
Young Sherlock Holmes (1985)
We've spent a lot of time on this site championing Back To The Future, The Goonies and Gremlins, and it's a policy we fully intend to keep adhering to. However, there was a movie made around the same time, that Spielberg also produced, which deserves praise. And that'd be Barry Levinson's Young Sherlock Holmes.
It's a surprise...

With ‘Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows’ set for release this December you have plenty of time to brush up on the great detective and his trusty partner Dr Watson. Only problem is that in his 124 year history, Holmes is one of, if not ‘the’, most portrayed fictional character of all time – so where to start?
Luckily you readers I have compiled a list of the 10 must see Sherlock Holmes Interpretations.
10. Young Sherlock Holmes (1985)
I’ll start with this underrated and often overlooked entry from executive producer Steven Spielberg and writer Chris Columbus (who went on to direct ‘Home Alone’ and the first two ‘Harry Potter’ pictures). This original adventure which re-imagines Holmes and Watson as teenagers who meet at boarding school and team up to solve a mystery involving a spate of murders around London.
Intended to kick off a franchise, this movie, while not based on any of Doyle’s stories,...

We know how it is: You’d like to go to the movies this weekend, but... prezzies! toys! candy canes! snowball fights! big holiday dinner! But you can have a multiplex-like experience at home with a collection of the right DVDs. And when someone asks you on Monday, “Hey, did you see Sherlock Holmes this weekend?” you can reply, “No, I took a couple other trips to Victorian London instead.” Instead Of: Sherlock Holmes, Guy Ritchie’s take on the world’s first consulting detective, featuring Robert Downey Jr. as a more physical Holmes than we’re used to (though not one unfaithful to the source material) and Jude Law as his sidekick, Dr. Watson... Watch: 1985’s Young Sherlock Holmes, in which teenaged Holmes (Nicholas Rowe) and Watson (Alan Cox) battle a seemingly supernatural foe, just like the grownup criminal investigators do in Ritchie’s film. For more Victorian crimefighting,...
