Brian Roberts, chairman and CEO of Comcast, had a compensation package worth $35.47 million in 2023, as he saw his pay rise 11% from the year prior.
Roberts, who oversees the cable giant and NBCUniversal, last year had a salary of $2.5 million, stock awards worth $15 million, stock options worth $9.2 million and a $8.55 million cash incentive bonus. In 2022, his compensation totaled about $32.1 million.
Comcast’s stock price rose 26% in 2023. Shares are down 12% year to date in 2024. The company reported $121.6 billion in revenue for 2023 (up 0.1%) and net income of $15.1 billion (versus $4.9 billion in 2022).
“Mr. Roberts provided invaluable long-term vision and stability as he continued to lead the execution of our company’s strategy worldwide, especially in light of the headwinds of an uncertain macroeconomic environment and regulatory and competitive challenges,” Comcast said in its proxy statement filed Friday with the SEC. “Mr. Roberts sets the tone for our businesses to execute at the highest level...

Stephen King is, as his name suggests, the king of horror fiction (while occasionally delving into other genres). The combination of his vivid writing style, characters with unique personalities and special abilities, and epic stories that unfurl with riveting suspense make his work rife for cinematic interpretation. Within these spine-chilling stories, King infuses keen observations on the human condition, and how evil — both supernatural and real — manifests in our society. Stephen King's literary works have produced some of the greatest films of all time including Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining," Brian De Palma's "Carrie," and Rob Reiner's "Stand By Me." Over 70 of his novels and short stories have been adapted into films or television shows, but since he is such a prolific writer — often churning out several books each year — there are countless that have yet to be adapted. This list ranks seven of Stephen King's engrossing page-turners...

The CEO of NBCUniversal parent Comcast said it’s “more likely than not” the company will end up selling its third of Hulu to Disney, after his Mouse counterpart indicated clearly last week that this would be Disney’s preferred outcome. There’s been some grandstanding over the past year as the deadline approaches, but both of Hulu’s parents appear to be on or near the same page now.
“The fact is that Bob Iger, on his earnings call last week, said that they’re now interested in general entertainment, which is no surprise,” Brian Roberts told investors at the MoffettNathanson Tmt conference. Earlier this year, Iger was a bit more skeptical on “undifferentiated” general entertainment streaming, versus Disney+ targeted brands.
Comcast can put its stake to Disney, or Disney can call it in, early next year. The Disney chief said that the two sides have had “cordial” and “constructive” conversations about Hulu.

Comcast CEO Brian Roberts kicked off the company’s first-quarter earnings call by delivering brief comments about the abrupt dismissal of NBCUniversal chief Jeff Shell last Sunday.
“Let me just acknowledge the news that you all saw earlier this week — obviously a tough moment,” he said of the exec’s ouster amid sexual harassment and discrimination claims. “But we are so fortunate to have the fabulous and tenured leadership team at NBCUniversal. If you go down the list, you’ll see many of them have been leading their divisions within the company for at least 10 years and are truly the best in the business.”
Mike Cavanagh, president of Comcast, has assumed Shell’s duties on an interim basis. Roberts said the company is “lucky” to have Cavanagh in that role. He was promoted to president just last fall, becoming the only exec to hold the title apart from Roberts and his father,...

As Comcast manages through the shocking and abrupt exit of NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell, the company has put senior exec Mike Cavanagh at the controls on an interim basis.
Cavanagh, who was promoted last October to president of Comcast, will play a central role in guiding the executive changeover and trying to keep NBCU on course. Although well-known and respected in corporate and financial circles, the Philadelphia-based exec has a much lower profile in Hollywood.
The unexpected new duties are landing on Cavanagh’s plate just months after he earned an important vote of confidence from CEO Brian Roberts and the company’s board of directors. His promotion from CFO to president made him the first person to hold the title outside of the Roberts family, and along with the new title came a contract extension through 2027.

Marilyn Monroe was one of the most glamorous and sought-after stars of her time. John F. Kennedy was, well, the president of the United States. After Marilyn performed a steamy rendition of "Happy Birthday" at the commander-in-chief's 45th birthday party in May 1962, rumors of an affair were propelled - and those rumors have persisted throughout history, even though details of an ongoing relationship between the two are actually pretty scarce.

It’s on. Comcast this morning confirmed its plan to make a rich counter-offer for the 21st Century Fox assets that Disney has proposed to acquire.
The move sets in motion what could be one of the all-time merger battles in media. Comcast chief Brian Roberts is set to clash with Disney’s Bob Iger for control of the film and TV empire that Rupert Murdoch and sons James and Lachlan spent years building. While Disney and Fox have agreed to a $52.4 billion deal, Comcast’s counter is believed to be in the $60 billion range.
As many in the media business and on Wall Street had been predicting since word surfaced of Comcast meeting with bankers to line up financing, the NBCUniversal owner and No. 1 U.S. cable distributor said a rival bid is in the “advanced stages.” The trigger for this morning’s announcement, Comcast said, was the filing...

As the 50th anniversary of Marilyn Monroe's death approaches, Lois Banner argues in this extract from her new book that the star – complex and powerful – had many qualities associated with the women's movement
In one of the most famous photos of the 20th century, Marilyn Monroe stands on a subway grate, trying to hold her skirt down as a gust of wind blows it up, exposing her underpants. The photo was taken in New York on 15 September, 1954, in a photoshoot during the filming of The Seven Year Itch.
Marilyn is a vision in white, suggesting innocence and purity. Yet she exudes sexuality and transcends it; poses for the male gaze and confronts it. The photoshoot was a publicity stunt, one of the greatest in the history of film. Its time and location were published in New York newspapers; it attracted a crowd of 100 male photographers and 1,500 male spectators, even...
