Nelly
Director: Anne Emond
Writer: Anne Emond
Quebecois director Anne Emond, whose impressive debut was 2011’s was Nuit #1, just unveiled her sophomore effort Our Loved Ones at the 2015 Locarno Film Festival. But as her family drama awaits Us distribution, she’s already filmed her third feature, Nelly, a film inspired by the life of famed prostitute turned novelist Nelly Arcan, who committed suicide in 2009. Emond states the film is not a biopic, and will feature five characters based on facets of Arcan’s personality.
Cast: Mylene Mackay
Production Co./Producer: Nicole Robert
U.S. Distributor: Rights available Tbd (domestic/international)
Release Date: We’re looking forward to Emond’s latest, which sounds like a thrillingly unconventional portrait of a provocative artist. Both of her features played at Tiff, so this may be a prime candidate for their new Platform program.

Xavier Dolan tied contemporaries Philippe Falardeau and Denis Villeneuve by winning his second Best Feature award at the 17th annual Jutra Awards. Quebec’s answer to the Oscars was a rather suspense-less affair as Mommy claimed nine (plus the top box office award honor) awards winning in all major categories with the exclusion of Best Supporting Actor category win, which would only end up going to Dolan’s other nominated film, Tom at the Farm. Pierre-Yves Cardinal was sublime in his predatory type role and as was the case for several nominees, was hard at work on another project and therefore not on hand for trophyware. Ricardo Trogi’s throwback to awkward teen years tale 1987 did win a trio of awards, but if there were any surprises in the Dolan camp it was the acceptance speeches: Dolan delivered a keynote speech type quality for the last win of the night...

Canadian director Daniel Roby (Funkytown) will write and direct the upcoming film Hell.com. The latter is based on a best-selling novel by Patrick Senécal.
In an exclusive article, the newspaper La Presse also added that the film will be produced by Nicole Robert. This producer has adapted into films other novels by Patrick Senécal.
She turned into films Sur le seuil and Les sept jours du talion.
Obviously, a third novel of Patrick Senécal has also been made into a film, which means 5150, rue des Ormes.
Once the first draft of Hell.com's script is over, it will be sent to Téléfilm Canada and the Sodec, which are respectively a cinematographic funding agency from Canada and Quebec.

Toronto – Canadian government coin for local indie production continues to flow.
Telefilm Canada, Ottawa's film financier, on Friday said it will hand out more than $25 million in funding to French-language movies over the current year through the Canada Feature Film Fund.
And the Ontario Media Development Corp., which hands out film tax credits to Canadian and Hollywood producers shooting locally, on Friday named Pinewood Toronto Studios chairman Paul Bronfman and four other industry players to its board of directors.
The latest round of financing from Telefilm Canada has seen $7 million going into six Quebec films, including "Bashir Lazhar," the latest feature from Writer-director Philippe Falardeau ("Congorama").
Based on the stage play by Evelyne de la Cheneliere, "Bashir Lazhar" portrays an Algerian refugee to Quebec who replaces a school-teacher who hanged herself, only to be faced at school by a group of traumatized pupils and Canadian immigration hurdles.
