In our Q&a /feature series Tell Me Más, we ask some of our favorite Latinx artists to answer the questions only their BFFs know about them, revealing everything from their most recent read to the songs that get them hyped. This month, singer-songwriter Elena Rose takes the test, and we are all ears.
Before manifestation - or the laws of attraction - went mainstream, Venezuelan singer-songwriter Elena Rose, born Andrea Elena Mangiamarchi Hernández, was learning about the wisdom behind how to live intentionally from her "super-spiritual mom."
Ever since she was a little girl, Rose, now 27 years old, knew she wanted to be a singer. While she always trusted that she could manifest that dream into existence, she knew the first step was leaving Venezuela. So, at 19, Rose and her 16-year-old sister migrated to the States to start a whole new life.

Entrepreneur Tony Robbins, a bestselling author, philanthropist and the world’s #1 life and business strategist, together with Feeding America, the largest domestic hunger-relief organization in the United States, today announced that they are closer than ever to their multi-year goal of helping provide 1 billion meals to people experiencing food insecurity.
Eight years into the 10-year campaign, Robbins and Feeding America, through their 1 Billion Meals Challenge, are well ahead of schedule having already helped provide 914 million meals to people facing hunger across the United States.
Despite this amazing achievement, so much more is required to combat hunger and support the food banks and relief organizations filling the basic, life sustaining need of providing meals for families.
In the United States alone, nearly 34 million people, including more than 9 million children, are food insecure. Access to regular, nutritious meals is growing increasingly difficult with food prices near-record highs and higher fuel and commodity costs continuing to rise,...

Back from either the dead or a seven-year sabbatical when he last appeared in the now-misleading Saw 3D: The Final Chapter in 2010, the latest reincarnation of Jigsaw is largely more of the same, with a little less gore. Jigsaw’s “healing” games — a cross between Tony Robbins making his audience walk on hot stones and Dr. Phil yelling at “patients” — is just as cutthroat as The Food Network’s Guy’s Grocery Games, and then some.
What might make for a fun movie is a straight-forward drama from the point of view of John Kramer (Tobin Bell) about what the Jigsaw killer does to fabricate these devices and what he does with the rest of his time carrying out the kinds of things Matthew Barney can only dream about. We’ve gotten bits and pieces of that over the years, but never the kind of artist biopic that Jigsaw truly deserves,...

Forget what you know about Wolfeinstein II: The New Colossus. It’s better than that. Yes, it’s coarse and crass and bombastic, just as pre-release footage promised. Yes Nazi heads go flying. But really, it’s a glorious crime caper in the mold of Ocean’s Eleven, sprinkled with the wit of an Inglorious Basterds; a tale told with swagger and spliced with humanity, capable of catching you with a well-timed fork out of the blue.
Its predecessor, The New Order, was a dish of good ideas that wound up feeling a little undercooked. It was daring to be different but also trying to pay lip service to the Wolfenstein legacy. This time around, the wildly talented bunch at Stockholm’s MachineGames have turned up the heat. That doesn’t mean bigger explosions and bigger baddies, mind you. It means a sense of place and a real sense of confidence.

Over the years, there have been dozens of sports movies pitting the lovable underdogs against the seemingly unbeatable elites — it’s a classic American story. But none were perhaps as big of a surprise hit as 2004’s Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story. Kourtney Kardashian has some things she needs to change in her life.
On Sunday’s episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Kourtney is the queen of indecisiveness.
The episode began with Kim asking if she was going to be attending New York Fashion Week. After going back and forth, Kourtney decided to go, so Kim booked a private jet for them to fly to NYC. While Khloe's decision-making exercises were hilarious to watch, Kourtney was finally able to get to the root of her problem with the help of a Tony Robbins documentary. “Most Beautiful Island”
A short, stressful, and utterly spellbinding debut that transforms the immigrant experience into the stuff of an early Polanski psychodrama, “Most Beautiful Island” was a worthy winner of the SXSW Grand Jury Prize for best narrative feature, and might prove to be a breakthrough moment for a major new talent: Spanish actress Ana Asensio not only wrote, directed, and produced this fraught metropolitan thriller, she also appears in just about every frame.
It would be criminal to reveal too much about what happens to her character, a Manhattan immigrant who’s struggling to make a life for herself in the big city and in for the longest night of her life, but it’s thrilling to watch the anxiety of neo-realism as it slowly bleeds into something that resembles the suspense of the orgy sequence from “Eyes Wide Shut.” Creating a lucid sense of reality only so...

Imagine a Tony Robbins session with a bunch of testosterone-fueled convicts and you’ll start to get an idea of “The Work,” an emotionally riveting documentary that may very well be the most powerful group therapy ever caught on camera. Co-directors Jairus McLeary and Gethin Aldous gained access to a tense four-day session at Folsom State Prison, where inmates engage with civilians in intimate conversations about their repressed frustrations. Scene by scene, their masculine armor falls away, and the tears erupt with volcanic intensity. The minimalist scenario, almost exclusively set within the confines of a nondescript room, foregrounds the visceral process of confronting anger and regret through a fascinating collaborative approach, with results that are alternately terrifying and cathartic.

Some movies are so powerful that they can change people’s lives. At the outdoor screening of “Tony Robbins: I Am Not Your Guru” in Brooklyn on Monday, Rooftop Films saved the life-changing experience for the Q&A.
What started as a typical post-screening discussion with director Joe Berlinger about the backstory to his Netflix documentary turned into something much more profound. A handful of audience members asked Robbins for advice related to their personal lives, while one woman addressed the apparent lack of diversity at Robbins’ six-day event “Date with Destiny” that is the focus of Berlinger’s documentary. After Robbins explained that the attendees depicted in the film came from 71 countries and had translators relaying everything said in six different languages, he asked the audience of 850 people to stand up and take part in a therapeutic exercise straight out of one of his motivational seminars.

Has it come to this? Is legendary documentary filmmaker Joe Berlinger now making branded content for the undeniably charismatic self-help guru Tony Robbins? 2,500 people make their way to Boca Raton, Florida for the six-day seminar every year, but director Joe Berlinger and his crew were the first allowed behind-the-scenes access to it. He’s as energetic offstage as he is in front of his assembled fans, who, at least in “I Am Not Your Guru,” are out of their minds with excitement to even be in the same room with Robbins.

Glenn here and welcome back to Doc Corner. Each Tuesday we're bringing reviews and features on documentaries from theatres, festivals, and on demand. This week we’re looking at films that screened at the just-ended SXSW about musical icon Gary Numan, self-helper Tony Robbins, and mature-age trans women.
Gary Numan: Android in La La Land
You know I hate to ask
But are 'friends' electric?
Only mine's broke down
And now I've no-one to love
Like many artists of Numan’s vintage who were experimenting with electronic music, there was a queerness to him, an otherness that the made him a symbol to hordes of young audiences who had never seen or heard anything like him before. He was a musician whose dark and complex lyrics were perfectly paired with the aloof roboticism of his performance – an android dreaming of the electric beeps and boops of a Moog synthesizer. But...

Happy Leap Day - and Leap Year, too, of course. And if you're one of the few who happen to be born on this day, happy birthday - finally! Leap Day is literally the rarest of dates on which anything can happen, but it's not without its merits and its not without its share of historical happenings. It's just that it gets a lot fewer of them, as a result of a cruel quirk of the Gregorian calendar. In case you've written this day off as just an extra 24 hours tacked randomly onto the shortest month, well here's a list...

From his days as a bit player to his later emergence as a force of nature in front of the camera and behind the scenes (you have his production company Red...

Hollywood may be in the thick of what many refer to as its annual purple patch, with some of the year’s finest releases coming to the fore just in time for awards season, though we’ll soon be switching gears once again to focus on the film festivals and, by effect, highlighting the more low-key and experimental releases headed our way in 2016.
One of the more prominent dates on the calendar is occupied by South by Southwest, the film festival that takes place in Austin, Texas during mid-March. It’s primed to return this year, kicking off nine days of screenings on Friday, March 11 through March 16 with a string of intriguing releases. We’re a little less than a month out from SXSW 2016, and organizers have rolled out the initial lineup of films to be screened for critics, with Jeff Nichols’ Midnight Special, the comic book adaptation of Preacher...

Adam McKay’s The Big Short — the subject of this week’s Vulture cover story — stars Ryan Gosling as a version of Greg Lippmann, a slick Deutsche Bank trader (he also gives some interstitial, direct-to-camera informative narration). We spoke with him about how to play a guy who bets against the American economy, how to order drinks like a “Tony Robbins on His Day Off,” and the importance of his hairpiece. Were you an Adam McKay fan before this? I am a huge fan. His movies aren’t even like movies, they’re more like friends of mine. Like it feels like you have to check in with Step Brothers every once in a while, just to see how it’s doing. Adam sent along the script, and I was just really impressed by it. I knew that he was freakishly smart. But the fact that he was tackling this subject matter,...

He’s been a Hollywood star since his teens, when he starred in Class, Sixteen Candles and The Sure Thing, but thankfully John Cusack was never like the characters in David Cronenberg’s Maps To The Stars. A brutal satire about the players, wannabes and has-beens of Hollywood, Cusack plays Stafford Weiss, a self-help guru who peddles his therapies to the weak-minded. Father to the foul Benjie (Evan Bird), a rehab-hopping teen star of the ‘Bad Babysitter’ franchise, Stafford is just one of the soulless ghouls that haunts the Hollywood Hills in what is the Canadian Cronenberg’s first real foray into Tinseltown terrain.
For Cusack, it represents yet another impressive notch in a career that’s seen him work with Stephen Frears (The Grifters, High Fidelity), Woody Allen (Shadows and Fog, Bullets Over Broadway), Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich), Terence Malick (The Thin Red Line) and Clint Eastwood (Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil...

Ty Herndon has been telling people he's gay for decades, but this week, he finally told People. "I'm an out, proud and happy gay man," the country star tells the magazine. Herndon says he's been out to friends and family for a long time but was inspired by a Tony Robbins seminar to come out publicly. He hopes that his announcement "could help someone's son or daughter or grandchild's life not be as difficult as mine has been." It's inaccurate to call Herndon the first gay country star — Chely Wright has him beat there — but Herndon is the most successful male artist in Nashville to come out. Herndon had three country No. 1s in the '90s, but a 1995 arrest for allegedly exposing himself to an undercover cop hindered his career.

Country star Ty Herndon has come out as gay - the 52-year-old singer revealed the news in a sit-down interview with People this week, saying, "I'm an out, proud and happy gay man." He explained that he was first compelled to come out during a Tony Robbins seminar five years ago; "I realized I had an incredible story that could possibly help someone's son or daughter or grandchild's life not be as difficult as mine has been," he said, adding, "Maybe they wouldn't have to go through as much pain and suffering." After many ups and downs throughout his music career - he was arrested on an indecent-exposure charge for allegedly exposing himself to a police officer in 1995 (the charge was later dropped in a plea bargain) and spent time in rehab for drug addiction - Ty is looking to return to the industry and plans on releasing a solo album next year.

There’s nothing worse than a feel-good crowd pleaser that doesn’t quite come together. A movie like Reach Me only aims to entertain by shooting directly for the heart, carried by a sweet message meant to leave audiences in an enlightened state. Negatively bashing such a blunder is like hating on a puppy or a kitten, something so sweet and innocent it can’t possibly be bad, right? Wrong. Reach Me is a mess of a film that wants to be the Pulp Fiction of life-altering comedies, but its colorful nature only provides momentary distractions from its lifeless, empty soul. Terrible performances, a haphazardly cobbled story, soap opera scripting – the only people Reach Me might save are future filmmakers, teaching them how Not to execute a complex story about multiple character arcs.
