Oscar Contender ‘It Ain’t Over’ Documents Underappreciated Greatness Of Yogi Berra — “Criminally Overlooked His Whole Life”
Image
“You can observe a lot by watching.”

Although attributed to the late Major League Baseball Hall of Famer/wit/pitchman Lawrence Peter “Yogi” Berra, one could imagine Albert Maysles, Frederick Wiseman or other legends of the observational/vérité strand of documentary positing this as a driving theme of a keynote address. Such is the understated prowess of this often misunderstood cultural icon, whose considerable achievements both on and off the field warrant a worthy documentary profile.

Enter filmmaker Sean Mullin, whose canon has consisted primarily of fiction features. Back in 2018, his producer, Peter Soboloff, was impressed with Rbg, about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, about television icon Fred Rogers, and he suggested that Mullin consider Yogi Berra as a protagonist. Soboloff then introduced Mullin to the Berra family.

Yogi Berra

“I’d done my research by the time I met with them,” says Mullin,...

Lelia Goldoni at an event for Histeria: La historia del deseo (2011)
Lelia Goldoni, who sparkled as the lead in John Cassavettes’ Shadows and played a friend of Ellen Burstyn’s character in Martin Scorsese’s Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, has died. She was 86.

Goldoni died Saturday at The Actors Fund Home in Englewood, New Jersey, her friend Jd Sobol announced.

Goldoni also appeared in the original The Italian Job (1969), in John Schlesinger’s The Day of the Locust (1975), in Philip Kaufman’s remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) and in Robert Mulligan’s Bloodbrothers (1978).

A second cousin of famed New York Yankees shortstop Phil Rizzuto, Lelia Vita Goldoni was born in New York on Oct. 1, 1936. She was raised in Los Angeles, where she was one of the Lester Horton Dancers alongside Alvin Ailey and Carmen de Lavallade.

Goldoni studied acting with Jeff Corey and at age 19 moved back to New York, where she became a student at a drama...

Meat Loaf’s Greatest Songs: A Dozen of His Best-Remembered or Most Unfairly Overlooked Tracks
Image
When powerhouse vocalist-actor Meat Loaf eulogized composer-producer Jim Steinman last April in Rolling Stone, the singer – who died Thursday at age 74 – said of his “Bat Out of Hell” partner, “We belonged heart and soul to each other. We didn’t know each other. We were each other.”

Meat Loaf (born Marvin Lee Aday) could not have stated the obvious better, as each man’s operatic, oversized talents were only matched by their level of grand theatricality, with thundering melodicism and melodramatic lyricism at the top of the list of their skill sets.

The best Meat Loaf songs – even those without Steinman’s tower-toppling compositions – come on in an epic, adrenalized rush. Even when singing a power ballad, Meat Loaf was loud and brazenly and heartbrokenly emotive. Here are some of the most dramatic and impactful of Meal Loaf’s musical moments:

Stoney & Meatloaf, “What You See is What You Get...

Image
Meat Loaf, the hardworking singer and actor whose theatrical Bat Out of Hell is one of the best-selling albums ever and who played Eddie in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, has died. He was 74.

The Grammy winner born Marvin Lee Aday died Thursday night surrounded by his wife Deborah, daughters Pearl and Amanda and close friends, Meat Loaf’s longtime agent Michael Greene told Deadline on behalf of the family. A cause of death is not being released. According to TMZ, the singer died of Covid-related complications.

“We know how much he meant to so many of you and we truly appreciate all of the love and support as we move through this time of grief in losing such an inspiring artist and beautiful man,” Meat Loaf’s family said in a statement. “From his heart to your souls…don’t ever stop rocking!”

Janet Jackson, Nas, Kermit the Frog Added to National Recording Registry
Image
The Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry announced 25 new additions to its catalog, including recordings by Janet Jackson, Nas, and Kermit the Frog.

Jackson’s 1989 album, Rhythm Nation 1814, was added to the registry, with the Library of Congress recognizing how Jackson brushed aside record executive wishes to repeat the success of Control and instead made an album that grappled with racism and social injustice. Jimmy Jam, one of the album’s producers, told the LoC, “We wanted Rhythm Nation to really communicate empowerment. It was making an observation, but it...

Yogi Berra
How Yogi Berra Helped to Create the First Sports Agent
Yogi Berra
When Yogi Berra was the Yankees’ star catcher in the late 1950s and early 1960s, he spent his off-seasons working — as a headwaiter in a restaurant, in a shoe factory, driving a Coca-Cola delivery truck and, with his teammate and close pal Phil Rizzuto, selling suits at a retail-clothing store and running a bowling alley in New Jersey. Berra was hardly the only sports hero making ends meet with winter jobs back in the days before Major League players were earning massive salaries — now as high as $30 million a year. Ted Williams ran a

What We Talk About When We Talk About Pizza

If you hit adolescence when I did—or if you listen to classic-rock stations—you’ll know a catchy 1977 song called “Paradise by the Dashboard Light,” performed as a duet by Meat Loaf and Ellen Foley. It’s a clever take on the teenage make-out session.

The boy’s refrain in the song is “We’re gonna go all the way tonight.” The girl resists and...

Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Invites Neil Diamond, Snubs LL Cool J
With any hall of fame, there are always going to be arguments about who belongs in and who doesn't, and there will typically be outrage about people who have been overlooked. Every hall of fame has its mysterious choices (baseball has Phil Rizzuto and Jim Rice, basketball has Adrian Dantley, football has Rickey Jackson), but this year's batch of inductees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is pretty confusing. The new class includes Alice Cooper, Tom Waits, Neil Diamond, Dr. John and Darlene Love.

Taken in a vacuum, that's not a horrible group of musicians (Waits' inclusion is especially inspiring, considering he has been consistently turning out great work for decades without a lot of mainstream recognition). But when you look at the nominees that got denied (especially LL Cool J, Beastie Boys and Bon Jovi) and the groups who continue to get overlooked (Kiss, Rush), it seems...

James Toback Gets in the Ring with Tyson
The director of this new documentary on the controversial boxer talks about the film, the fighter and future projects

James Toback has distinguished himself as a filmmaker by working on his own terms. Toback, who received an Oscar nomination for his amazing screenplay for Bugsy, has now put his unique imprint on the world of documentaries with Tyson, which will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on August 18. I had the chance to speak with this wonderful filmmaker over the phone about his wonderful documentary about the former undisputed heavyweight champion and here's what he had to say.

I watched the DVD and it's quite a wonderful film, I must say.

James Toback: Thank you, thank you.

I noticed on the special features that you said you had known Mike Tyson for about 20 years, so I was wondering how you first met him and how your relationship has grown over the years?...

Yankee legend, broadcaster Phil Rizzuto dies
NEW YORK -- Phil Rizzuto, the Hall of Fame Yankees shortstop during the 1940s and '50s who had a long second career as a broadcaster, died in his sleep Tuesday of pneumonia at a nursing home in West Orange, N.J. He was 89.

Rizzuto was a fixture on New York television from 1957, the year after he was cut from the team, until 1995, when he quit after broadcasting a Yankees-Red Sox game instead of attending the funeral of teammate Mickey Mantle. He was known for several expressions -- most notably "Holy cow!" -- and often wished viewers birthday or other greetings on the air.

His stream-of-consciousness broadcasting style endeared him to many fans and infuriated a few others, as he often turned from what was going on in the field to talk about golf or Italian food or how he was planning to beat the game traffic over the George Washington Bridge on his way home to New Jersey. Former Yankees player and broadcaster Bobby Murcer said he remembered all the food -- cannoli, salami and cheese -- that was in the broadcast booth thanks to Rizzuto.
