“La Femme Nikita” was almost certainly not the first film about a young woman rescued from life on the streets to become a cold-blooded assassin, but the success of Luc Besson’s 1990 thriller set a template that no one seems able to shake, even 31 years later. The new film “The Protégé” follows in the footsteps of “Nikita” and far too many of its successors, with just about half as much awareness as it needs to get out of their shadow.
Director Martin Campbell (“Casino Royale”) has become a reliable provider of sturdy, polished action, but he’s seldom been able to bring to the screen what wasn’t already on the page. And after scripting “The Mechanic,” “The Equalizer” and its sequel, screenwriter Richard Wenk appears to have nothing new to contribute to the decreasingly rarified subgenre. That said, Maggie Q — who previously played Nikita in a TV series inspired...

Medical heroes are some of the best people to hold society together during times of crisis. That’s certainly true with the title character of the British drama series, ‘Doctor Finlay,’ which takes place in the 1940s after he returns from war service. The successful BBC series, which was set and filmed in Scotland, stars David […]

A review of tonight's Game of Thrones coming up just as soon as soon as you accept it would just be farting, belching and slapping without me.... "It's not an easy thing admitting to yourself what you really are." -Margaery After a run of episodes packed with tragic deaths, important resurrections, tearful reunions, and unexpected love connections, "Blood of My Blood" takes its foot off the gas a bit to reassess several major power dynamics and check in on some characters and locales that haven't gotten much attention of late, like Sam's visit to his father's castle or our first glimpse of Walder Frey since season 3. (As a result, it left many of the show's major groups on the sidelines for the week, including the gangs from Castle Black, Meereen, Winterfell, and the Iron Islands.) It's a necessary kind of episode, both from a plot standpoint and a tonal one...

Which direction might the Game Of Thrones prequel spinoffs take? We ponder below...
With news arriving that HBO is developing a clutch of Game Of Thrones spinoff series, we ponder which directions the monster hit's follow-ups might take.
See related Star Trek: Generations - looking back at Star Trek 7
The big question is, once the battle for the Iron Throne is done and we’ve seen whether Daenerys ever makes it to Westeros, whether the Starks will have their vengeance and whether Tyrion ever runs out of eunuch gags, where do we go next?
Luckily for us all, the A Song Of Ice And Fire novels, as well as their extended universe which was fleshed out so intricately by The World Of Ice And Fire 'Untold History' book, has provided plenty of source material to work with. Here are just a few possible directions for prequel spin-offs.

Brian Blessed and Sir Doris the hamster make this remastered 1999 series by the creators of Peppa Pig and Ben & Holly this week’s best kid-friendly option
With decent family films fairly thin on the ground this half term, this BFI-supported tour of seven remastered episodes of the 1999 BBC animated series is almost certainly the best kid-friendly cinema option of the week. Directed by Neville Astley and Mark Baker, who went on to create Peppa Pig and Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom, The Big Knights is the rambunctuously funny tale of two oversized brothers, Sir Boris (David Rintoul) and Sir Morris (Brian Blessed).
Blundering and blusterous, but endearingly well-meaning, the Knights crash though a world of yore, accompanied by their armour-clad pets, Sir Horace the dog and Sir Doris the hamster. It’s a slyly parent-friendly world, constantly threatened by ‘unexpected cataclysmic events’, populated by vampires, witches, brilliant but dangerously insane...

1976 saw the publication of John Brosnan’s excellent book The Horror People. Written during the summer of 1975, it makes interesting reading 40 years down the line. Those who feature prominently in the book – Peter Cushing, Vincent Price, Jack Arnold, Michael Carreras, Sam Arkoff, Roy Ward Baker, Freddie Francis, Robert Bloch, Richard Matheson and Milton Subotsky – were still alive, as were Ralph Bates, Mario Bava, Jimmy Carreras, John Carradine, Dan Curtis, John Gilling, Robert Fuest, Michael Gough, Val Guest, Ray Milland, Robert Quarry and Michael Ripper, all of whom were given a mention. Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney Junior, Michael Reeves and James H Nicholson were not long dead. Hammer, Amicus and American International Pictures were still in existence. George A Romero had yet to achieve his prominence and Stephen King wasn’t even heard of!
Brosnan devoted a chapter to a new British company called Tyburn Films. Founded by the charismatic and ambitious Kevin Francis,...

Writer-director Jonathan English got surprisingly lucky with the first Ironclad (2011) film, as it offered a thrilling/shocking blood thirst of video-gaming proportions, as well as an impressive cast, including Paul Giamatti, Brian Cox, Derek Jacobi, Charles Dance and the dashing James Purefoy. Still set in the harsh surroundings of 13th Century Britain, post the Great Siege of Rochester Castle, the second film, Ironclad 2: Battle For Blood, seems to have switched target audience, with a more youthful cast of mainly TV actors.
After the De Vesci castle home comes under attack from a band of marauding Celts, resulting in a critical body wound for the master of the house, Gilbert De Vesci (David Rintoul), his son Hubert (Tom Rhys Harries) is tasked with fetching his battle-scarred cousin, Guy (Tom Austen) to defend their ancestral home. UKTV's new Drama TV channel has recreated the iconic Mr Darcy lake moment from the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice to mark its launch today (July 8).
The famous scene, which featured Colin Firth as the Jane Austen romantic hero, was recently voted the UK's most memorable drama moment of all time.
Today's re-creation of the famous TV scene caused quite a stir at Hyde Park's Serpentine this morning, generating a huge amount of interest from passers-by.
The model has been built by a team of three sculptors over two months and is the height of a double decker bus.
Lead sculptor Toby Crowther said: "We took Colin Firth's famous lake scene as a starting point for creating Mr Darcy but we also read the book and looked at performances of the brooding hero by Matthew Macfadyen, David Rintoul and even Laurence Olivier.

Each Christmas and Easter season, History and other cablenets air a number of documentaries on various aspects of the Bible, usually featuring talking-head experts and iffy-looking dramatic re-creations.
Often these productions take a skeptical look at the historicity or accuracy or veracity of biblical accounts, as if the last thing in the world a documentary would want to be seen doing is taking anything in the Bible at face value.
But skepticism was the last thing on the minds of reality TV mogul Mark Burnett ("The Apprentice," "Survivor") and his wife, actress Roma Downey ("Touched by an Angel"), when they set out as executive producers of "The Bible," airing Sundays from March 3 to March 31, which is Easter Sunday this year.
Joined by their faith and a love for the sacred writings of Judaism and Christianity, they have spearheaded a 10-hour, five-part dramatic series that spans the Old and New Testaments,...

Quentin Falk writes: Although he was always polite to the point of being obsequious with his stars, Michael Winner could be a bully when it came to minor actors and humble craftsmen on his film sets. While researching my biography of Anthony Hopkins, I witnessed at first-hand, during the filming of A Chorus of Disapproval (1989) in Scarborough, Winner's verbal assault on a young actor who was required to knee Hopkins in the groin and who was understandably nervous about about how he should weigh the blow.
"You're not a bloody ballet dancer," Winner screamed at him after a few duff takes. Hopkins, who relished racing to the rescue of fellow thesps threatened by despotic directors, bellowed back: "Don't get after him, Michael. He's doing the best he can." Winner giggled nervously and drew back. On the next take, the young actor went for it with a vengeance, leaving his saviour Hopkins in some distress,...

So, on the face of it today could appear a slight respite following an almost absurdly dramatic fortnight. A majority of English daily papers – five against four – lead on other stories, including the unfolding crisis in the eurozone.
But rest assured there will be more to come. Nick Clegg is scheduled to give an end-of-term press conference imminently. Perhaps someone could ask why he looked so detached – disinterested, even – during David Cameron's phone hacking statement. There is also surely...
