In a carriage battle about pay TV’s future, one of the original cable channels became an unexpected flashpoint.
Freeform, the Disney-owned cable channel that caters to younger women, was dropped from Spectrum channel lineups as part of Disney’s landmark deal with Charter Communications. It was no small decision, with Freeform in some 74 million homes at the end of last year, and with Charter’s nearly 15 million cable TV households no longer having access.
“When we looked across the portfolio to try to identify where the greatest value in this deal was to us, we definitely made some trade-offs,” Disney Entertainment co-chairman Dana Walden told The Hollywood Reporter after the Spectrum deal was announced. She noted that channels like Freeform already served as a pipeline of programming for streaming services like Hulu.

"I don't think he's looking for destruction, I think he's looking for relief." Wow this is a must watch trailer. Vertical Ent. has revealed an official trailer for To Catch a Killer, another crime thriller to continue with the trend of murder films / series being released by the dozen these days. This will be opening nationwide in theaters in April. It borrows the very same title ("To Catch a Killer") from a popular two-part TV movie from 1992, also about a murder investigation, starring Brian Dennehy and Michael Riley. In this new film, set in Baltimore, a talented but troubled police officer (played by Shailene Woodley) is recruited by the FBI's chief investigator to help profile and track down an elusive mass murderer. In addition to Woodley, the film also stars Ben Mendelsohn, Jovan Adepo, Ralph Ineson, Rosemary Dunsmore, Jason Cavalier, and Mark Camacho. Being Erica
Created by Jane Sinyor
Aired on CBC from 2009-2011
Have you ever wished you could turn back time? Of course you have- who among us could honestly answer otherwise? We all have moments we regret in our lives, those tiny little mistakes that gnaw at us from their fabled place in the past. What if you could eliminate them, though, erasing them and replacing them with decisions that your hindsight assures you would have been the better course of action? Would you? And if you would, how do you imagine these events would change your situation in the present day? These are the myriad of questions proposed by Being Erica, a Canadian series that centers around a troubled 30-something who enters into a sort of metaphysical therapy after being approached by a mysterious therapist.

ABC Family‘s new president is Tom Ascheim. Ascheim, who has served as Evp and General Manager of Nickelodeon Television and CEO of Newsweek, will start immediately. He succeeds Michael Riley, who announced his departure in September to relocate to the UK. The hire of Ascheim comes after an exhaustive search led by Anne Sweeney, co-chair, Disney Media Networks and president, Disney/ABC Television Group, that included vetting a number of internal Disney candidates (Riley also came from within the company) as well as outside ones. Those considered included Riley’s No. 2, Evp Original Programming and Development and Chief Creative Officer Kate Juergens, though, like she did when Riley’s predecessor Paul Lee left, she is expected to remain focused on the network’s programming as Sweeney reportedly searched for an executive with a strong business background. Update 1 Pm: The search for Michael Riley‘s replacement is still in the nascent stages, but his No. 2, Evp Original Programming and Development and Chief Creative Officer Kate Juergens, is being talked about as a logical choice. The main question is whether, following her recent promotion to a Chief Creative Officer, Juergens would want the top job. The situation is reminiscent of that at sibling Disney Channel, where the top creative executive, Gary Marsh, did not go for the president job when Rich Ross left to run Disney Studios. After the job became vacant again two years later when Carolina Lightcap left, Marsh took over. Juergens similarly had been ABC Family’s top development executive but did not make a play for the president position when Paul Lee left in 2010. Will she do it now? You know I’m a fan of ABC Family, and there’s no denying the popularity of Pretty Little Liars. Well, now there’s more to explore in the Pll world, as a spin-off is coming your way in October. Ravenswood will be stepping out into the light in October, and Pretty Little Liars will get a fifth season.
I find this one pretty interesting actually, because this could go several directions, and because the social media phenomenon that is Pll is of interest all by itself. Will this one take off and become its own social media craze? I want to know actually.
While Pretty Little Liars is a decent show (you know, given the appropriate caveats about age and so on), the explosion of popularity, and even the massive integration, when it comes to social media is the sort of thing that all shows on all networks should be studying.

ABC Family is ready to get into the reality-show game. On Wednesday (Feb. 13), network president Michael Riley announced the pick-up of two new reality series, "Dancing Fools" and "The Vineyard." Both series will go into production this spring and will air during the summer of 2013.
"Dancing Fools," hosted by Melissa Peterman ("Baby Daddy," "Bet on Your Baby"), is a half-hour, unscripted comedy. ABC Family didn't announce any other details, but we can guess that this probably involves a dance competition of some sort.
Phil Gurin ("The Singing Bee," "Oh Sit") created and will executive-produce the show.
"The Vineyard" is described as a "dramatic coming-of-age docu-soap." The program will follow a group of 20-somethings working on Martha's Vineyard for the summer. Mischief and romance are expected when the group shares a house and the youths work and play together. It might be something like "Jersey Shore" in this way, only colder and less orange.

ABC Family is jumping into pilot season with orders for two drama pilots. Both shows -- "The Fosters" and "Twisted" -- will begin production in the spring and will air in the summer of 2013.
"The Fosters" tells the story of a multi-ethnic family made up of a mix of foster and biological children. All of the kids are being raised by two moms.
The show will be executive-produced by Jennifer Lopez, Bradley Bredeweg and Peter Paige. The cast includes Teri Polo, Sherri Saum, Jake T. Austin, Hayden Byerly, David Lambert, Maia Mitchell, Danny Nucci and Cierra Ramirez.

ABC Family has picked up to series two of its three drama pilots — The Fosters, executive produced by Jennifer Lopez, and Socio, which has been renamed Twisted. Filming on both, which are produced in-house, will begin in the spring for a summer debut. “These new shows will bring the same depth, heart, close relationships and authenticity that our viewers have come to expect and will pair nicely with our already established pop culture hits,” ABC Family president Michael Riley said. I hear the network’s third drama pilot, Terminales, is still very much in contention and appears likely to get a series order contingent on some deal-making. As for ABC Family’s two comedy pilots, Miseducation aka Phys Ed and Continuing Fred, I hear neither is going forward. That could be in part a result of the strength of ABC Family’s drama pilots. The network had originally planned to...

It's the end of the competition for Make It or Break It. ABC Family has cancelled the TV show after three seasons on the air.
Make It or Break It revolves around top young gymnasts who are training for the Olympics. The series debuted in mid-June 2009 to a 0.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 2.5 million total viewers. The ratings fell as low as a 0.6 in the demo with 1.9 million but that was still enough for the cable channel to renew it for a second season of 20 episodes.
The ratings got worse in season two but ABC Family still renewed Make It or Break It for a third season. This time however, they only ordered eight episodes. According to network president Michael Riley, it was "in time to ignite Olympic fever."

The current eight-episode third season of the ABC Family series Make It Or Break It will be its last. The writing has pretty much been on the wall for the gymnastics drama, which first faced cancellation last summer following its second 20-episode season, which was down from the 20-epsiode Season 1. But last September, the network renewed the series for eight episodes “in time to ignite Olympic fever,” as ABC Family president Michael Riley put it. The timing does make sense as the premise of the series was following several elite female teen gymnasts dreaming of competing at the upcoming summer 2012 Olympics in London. The current abbreviated third season chronicles the final leg of the race to the Olympics, with the May 14 finale revealing who of the three girls will make the U.S. team for the games. ABC Family this week began promoting the May 14 closer as the series finale,...
