Saar Rogiers as Lena in Sea Sparkle. Domien Huyghe: 'She really understood what her character was going through and you see it' Photo: Aaron La Peirre Sea Sparkle is a Belgian family film that sees the world of teenager Lena (Saar Rogiers) rocked by the death of her fisherman father and his crew while they are out at sea. While trying to come to terms with the loss, she becomes convinced that there is a monster in the water near her town and is increasingly determined to convince everyone else. The film, directed by Domien Huyghe and co-written with Jean-Claude Van Rijckeghem and Hyghe’s sister Wendy embeds the story of grief within an adventure as Lena enlists the help of new friend Vincent (Sverre Rous) to try to find out the truth. The subject of childhood grief ripples through this debut film from Domien Huyghe, which was co-written with his sister Wendy Huyghe and Jean-Claude van Rijckeghem and is partially based on the Huyghes' own experience of grief as children.
Lena (Saar Rogiers) is a daddy's girl, sharing Antoine's (Valentijn Dhaenens) love of the sea where he makes his living. When tragedy strikes Antoine's crew, the whole community is left reeling as both she and her best friend Kaz (Dunia Elaweed) find themselves both dealing with the loss of their fathers. With whispers around the town that Antoine's gung-ho attitude in bad weather may have been the cause of the tragedy, Lena is also looking for answers.
Small wonder, then, when the boat they are carrying the ashes out to sea on is rocked and she sees a shadow beneath the waves, that she becomes convinced that there is a strange creature that caused her.

Sweden’s Plattform Produktion is teaming up with Dutch production group Lemming Film on director Ena Sendijarević’s colonial drama “Sweet Dreams.”
The film, which is set to shoot on location in Southeast Asia next year, follows tumultuous events triggered by the death of a Dutch sugar plantation owner who ends up leaving his Indian Ocean island estate to his young illegitimate son – the child of his Indonesian housemaid – upending not only his Dutch family’s plans but also established hierarchies in a single stroke.
Plattform, whose credits include “The Square” and “Force Majeure,” joins fellow co-producers A Private View from Belgium and Dutch pubcaster Vpro.
For Sendijarević, the film represents her contribution to the movement that is critically examining the past and the relationship between the West and the rest of the world and its continuing impact.

The Shoot the Book adaption market — a staple at the Marché du Film since 2014 and a rising player on the global film scene — continues to evolve.
As the program — a joint initiative between publishing trade group Scelf (Société Civile des Editeurs de Langue Française) and the publicly funded Institut Français — continues to host curated pitch sessions at markets in Cannes, Shanghai and Los Angeles, it will also look to expand its B2B rendezvous component that was introduced last year.
“Our ambition is very simple,” says Scelf director Nathalie Piaskowski. “We want to entrench and entwine the two events. We want to make the rendezvous a fixture — and export it to other markets and festivals.”
And so on June 25, Shoot the Book will kick off this year’s edition with a morning pitch session — spotlighting 10 literary properties selected by an industry jury — and return in the afternoon for a three-hour...

New Europe Film Sales is representing the Bel-Swe-Nor-nl co-production.
Cloudboy has won the Works In Progress award - which comes with an $11,000 (€10,000) prize - at Flanders Image’s inaugural NeXT event. The story is about a Belgian boy who connects to his Swedish mother’s Sami roots during a summer trip to Lapland.
An international industry jury said, “We really want to see the special world that director Meikeminne Clinckspoor has created. We thought producer Katleen Goossens was very well prepared with her presentation, and both she and Meikeminne also told us about the heart of the story not just the plot. The story is both original and universal and we think it will appeal to wide audiences.”
Flanders Image had invited invited 13 projects in post-production – all backed by the Flanders Audiovisual fund — to pitch to the international industry in attendance.
