Over the past few months, Netflix has been busy treating its audience to new big-budget projects, from the live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender and Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen to the much-hyped 3 Body Problem and Ripley with Andrew Scott. But as high-profile as Netflix's premieres are, they seem to pale in comparison to what competing streaming services are offering.
According to numerous data and statistics, a large number of American households have recently preferred platforms such as Hulu and Max, thanks to the regular addition of acclaimed full-length new releases, or Prime Video, especially thanks to the recent hit Fallout.

Deadpool & Wolverine Theory ft Ryan Reynolds & Teyonah Paris (Picture Credit: IMDb)
Deadpool & Wolverine is one of the much-awaited movies of 2024. With the film, the mutants officially become a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The Shawn Levy directorial stars Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson/Deadpool, Hugh Jackman as James “Logan” Howlett/Wolverine, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Rob Delaney as Peter, Leslie Uggams as Blind AI, Karan Soni as Dopinder and Matthew Macfadyen as Paradox. Emma Corrin plays the villain in the film.
No one knows the exact plot of the movie Deadpool 3. However, the teaser-trailer hinted at the multiversal adventure. There’s a reason why Wade Wilson caught the Time Variance Authority’s (Tva) attention. After all, if you meddle with timelines, you have to pay the price and we’ve seen that in Tom Hiddleston’s Loki. While it would be interesting to see how Ryan...

It’s often said that before even considering building a new franchise, one should prioritize the individual success of the first film. That was the case with the Kingsman saga, which only took off after confirming its commercial and financial triumph. Its creator, Matthew Vaughn, now decides to expand it into a cinematic universe – with the intention of eventual crossovers – by assembling a new trilogy, starting precisely with Argylle. Walking into the theater, expectations weren’t particularly high – online debates about Henry Cavill‘s (Mission: Impossible – Fallout) ridiculous haircut didn’t form a very positive environment – but there was a reasonable hope for a pleasant cinephilic morning.
Beyond the star-studded cast, I was aware of the intriguing narrative premise. Argylle tells the story of Elly Conway – portrayed by Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World Dominion) – an author of a highly successful spy book series. However, when her fictional plots begin to...

After the BTS ‘leak’ of Deadpool 3, the director Shawn Levy admitted that he would want to minimize green screens and shoot this MCU film in real locations. Does it sound familiar? Because it seems that shooting mega-budget films in real locations is the new trend. Maybe it’s time to minimize the usage of green screens. Then movies will start to look like movies, and not like cartoons.

While virtual production has become a mainstay of “Fantastic Beasts,” the introduction of VR to the planning and designing of digital set builds was crucial to the series’ latest chapter — particularly when shooting was postponed by Covid-19 lockdown. This was due to the new pre-production services toolkit of London-based VFX studio Framestore, which handled “The Secrets of Dumbledore” and the two “Harry Potter” spin-offs that preceded.
Launched early in 2020, Framestore Pre-production Services (Fps) delivered 90 minutes of postvis for David Yates’ director’s cut, as well as using virtual production tools to help plan and visualize some of the film’s key set pieces, including the chaotic Berlin political rally, and the final battle in Bhutan between Dumbledore (Jude Law) and dark wizard Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen).

I think it is fair to say that the Fantastic Beasts series is no Harry Potter, and this latest instalment is the greyest, dullest and most missable and confused entry in The Wizarding World to date. Off the back of the polarising The Crimes of Grindelwald and amidst numerous cast and crew controversies, this franchise needed a huge spell with The Secrets of Dumbledore, instead what we have is a film that signifies a saga limping to the end, as it forgets all it was and has no idea what it wants to be next.
The film catches up with Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) as he is now very much part of the fight against the oncoming threat posed by the dastardly and powerful Grindelwald. However, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) is still bound by a past promise, but as Grindelwald’s message and reach grows, he must help form a...

Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” is the newest adventure in the Wizarding World created by J.K. Rowling. The third installment opens in theaters internationally beginning 7, April 2022 and in North America on April 15, 2022. Here’s a look at the brand new trailer.
Professor Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) knows the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) is moving to seize control of the wizarding world. Unable to stop him alone, he entrusts Magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) to lead an intrepid team of wizards, witches and one brave Muggle baker on a dangerous mission, where they encounter old and new beasts and clash with Grindelwald’s growing legion of followers. But with the stakes so high, how long can Dumbledore remain on the sidelines?

It has been long loading time for Shawn Levy’s Free Guy thanks to the end boss known as the pandemic but finally it’s here, and what a sleeper hit it has been in a very difficult year for cinema, as the medium tries to finds its feet again. In fact many are saying that Free Guy is perhaps the best video game film ever made, which is kind of ironic because the film itself is not a video game adaptation, but a brand new story inspired by a plethora of video game (and movie) influences.
Ryan Reynolds is Guy, a non playable character in a widely successful and popular open world video game called Free City, but Guy aspires to more than being an observer to life and starts to act against his programming. This act of individuality, not only allows Guy to see the wider realities of...

This biopic of the legend Elton John is very different. It is unconventionally and expertly mounted, giving an insight into the life of the performer.
Like Elton's life, the narrative begins on a dramatic note. An outrageously dressed Elton barges into a psychotherapy session where he admits to his addiction and is prodded to tell his story, so that he may get relief from his maladies after the cathartic experience.
The narrative, in a typical trajectory of rise-fall-rise is told via dreamlike, fantasy flashbacks where Elton's songs are used to comment on the action of the moment. It is thus a sort of a jukebox musical, told entirely in an ultra-flamboyant style, from John's perspective. It aims to be seen as what amounts to a brave self-portrait.
His memories take him back to his childhood, when as a child, born Reginald Dwight (played by Matthew Illesley), he felt like an awkward,...

Elton John is a legend. No one will argue that. Nor will anyone take issue with his colorful life being given the biopic treatment. The way Rocketman opts to tell this tale, however, that’s a whole other story. Opening this week, the John biopic does not soar like its title would suggest. Worse yet, it misuses and/or wastes much of the musician’s most famous songs. This is easily the most disappointing movie of the year so far. Oscar voters may ultimately be fooled later on in 2019 by a strong central turn and a fondness for the figure being portrayed, but I’m not. This is quite the misfire. The film is, as mentioned above, a biopic of Elton John (Taron Egerton as an adult), the chart topping musician, known as one of the biggest artists ever to grace the medium. Born Reginald Dwight, he was an awkward child,...

Another rock biography with an Oscar-caliber performance so soon after Bohemian Rhapsody? Critics have been more welcoming to Rocketman, starring an electrifying Taron Egerton as the young, addicted, conflicted, gay and gifted Elton John, than they were to the story of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, which had to settle for becoming the highest-grossing music biopic of all time ($900 million). The PG-13 Rhapsody took heat for sanitizing Mercury’s sex, drugs and rock & roll lifestyle and for being, in the words of Bill Maher, “not gay enough.” Rest assured that there’s plenty of sex,...

It was fitting that Paramount chose West Hollywood’s historic Troubadour as the site of Monday night’s sneak peek of “Rocketman,” the eagerly awaited Elton John biopic, opening May 31st. That’s where John made his U.S. debut and skyrocketed to superstardom in the summer of 1970. The reception featured Taron Egerton as Reg Dwight-turned Elton John, Bryce Dallas Howard as mother Sheila, Jamie Bell as long-time lyricist Bernie Taupin, and producer David Furnish (John’s husband). (Director Dexter Fletcher was in post-production and unavailable for the event.)
The 20-minute presentation, starring an eerily spot-on Egerton (who does his own singing), covered all of the ups and downs of the rock star’s rollercoaster ride throughout the ’70s and ’80s, but in a much more audacious and unconventional way than the popular Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” (on which Fletcher replaced Bryan Singer as uncredited director).

As we finish of this awards season on Sunday night, the next wave of potential Oscar contenders are already beginning to tease themselves. One of the possible players even has a director who factored heavily into one of the current Best Picture nominees. It’s Rocketman, the hotly anticipated Elton John biopic. Dexter Fletcher is at the helm of this one, due in no small part for how he stepped in to help guide Bohemian Rhapsody to the finish line. This is a different looking film though, so it will probably have more of his mark on it. A brand new Trailer was dropped yesterday for the flick, which you’ll be able to see at the bottom of the post. Before that, as always, let us discuss the movie a bit, shall we? The film is, as mentioned above, a biopic of the legendary musician Elton John. The plot synopsis,...

Kingsman: the Secret Service is the fifth directorial effort from director Matthew Vaughan and yet another film that I thoroughly enjoyed. I should mention that I have been a fan of Mark Vaughan’s work since Layer Cake, one of my favorite British gangster movies and Vaughan’s first feature. So I admit I’m a little biased, I loved Kick Ass, I really loved X-Men: First Class, and I was so excited when I heard about this film. Yes, I know I left out Stardust, yes, it’s because I really didn’t like it.
Based on yet another comic by Mark Millar, Kingsman is a breathtaking re-imagination of the whole British spy genre…and then some. Interestingly enough this is not the first Mark Millar project Vaughan has helmed, the first being Kick –Ass 1 (the better one). Vaughan is also credited as “co-plotter” on The Secret Service, the...

★★★☆☆ Inspired by the discography of The Proclaimers and based on Stephen Greenhorn's stage hit, Dexter Fletcher's Sunshine on Leith (2013) is a convivial and well-shot musical that forms a narrative and articulates the variable emotions of its characters through upbeat, crowd-pleasing pop songs to varying degrees of success. Fresh from a tour in Afghanistan, Davy (George MacKay) and Ally (Kevin Guthrie) return home to Edinburgh. At first, everything seems fine: Ally dives head-first back into his relationship with Davy's sister Liz (Freya Mavor), and Davy strikes up a romance with Liz's best friend Yvonne (Antonia Thomas).
However, as time passes and they settle further back into normality, their dreams of happiness are thrown into chaos, much like Davy's parents' relationship, which is rocked by a startling revelation during their silver wedding anniversary celebrations. It all sounds terribly pedestrian yet Fletcher, who received wide acclaim for his feature debut Wild Bill...

Director: Nick Murphy; Screenwriter Bill Gallagher; Starring: Paul Bettany, Mark Strong, Stephen Graham, Brian Cox, Zoë Tapper; Running time: 92 mins; Certificate: 15
You don't need to have seen Bill Gallagher's 2004 BBC series Conviction to recognise the small-screen roots of Blood, which begins in a relatively standard Sunday evening telly vein. After a 12-year-old girl is murdered, hardened and emotionally distant copper Joe Fairburn (Paul Bettany) becomes obsessed with tracking down her killer, with the case reminding him of an unsolved one from his past.
The police arrest Jason (an unsettling Ben Crompton), a smug and unrepentant creep with a history of child abuse. Joe and his more sensitive brother Chrissie (Stephen Graham) are convinced of his guilt, but he's released due to lack of evidence. This does not sit well with the increasingly unpredictable Joe, and an impulsive act of vigilante justice sends both brothers spiralling into moral decline.

The release of a inmate from prison and their subsequent reintegration into ‘regular’ society is an area that is filled with potential for interesting drama.
Ulu Grosbard’s under-seen and underrated 1978 film Straight Time (based on the equally excellent book No Beast So Fierce by Edward Bunker) uses this premise to explore the way in which the released inmate’s, played by Dustin Hoffman, life is defined by the way in which they have been labelled by society.
In his debut film, Wild Bill, Dexter Fletcher treads similar territory with his lead character struggling to adjust to life outside of prison but in addition he introduces an intense family drama to the mix.
The titular Bill (Charlie Creed-Miles) returns home from prison after many years inside and in the interim period his two sons, Jimmy (Sammy Williams) and Dean (Will Poulter), have been abandoned by their mother and left to fend for themselves.
