The new album from indie-pop band Sports Team opens with a blast of pure euphoria. “Oh yeah, that’s the game,” sings frontman Alex Rice over a rush of student disco guitars. “Life’s hard but I can’t complain.”
Picked apart, the lyrics – from the group’s forthcoming second LP, Gulp! – are revealed to be rather bleak. “The Game”, the outwardly joyous first track, is a laundry of woes confronting Gen Z-ers and millennials in this age of unaffordable housing and gig economy-type zombie jobs. Yet the feeling it communicates is one of exultation and living in the moment.
It isn’t alone in that respect. As the music industry recalibrates after the pandemic, the floodgates have opened on records that revel in catharsis. Chief among them is Beyoncé’s dancefloor epic Renaissance. There is also Rina Sawayama’s Hold The Girl, out this week and featuring shiny-eyed Corrs...

As anyone who failed to get within hearing distance of Wolf Alice at Reading 2022 will tell you, alternative rock is having a moment (again). Key to the acclaim and success in this new wave, which should really be called all-wave, is to encompass a wide variety of indie and pop styles past and present, thereby befuddling the almighty algorithm into recommending you to everyone.
Which makes London’s Sports Team the natural successors to Wolf Alice. A fiercely ambitious bunch – they booked an early gig at the Scala back when their entire social media following combined wouldn’t have filled the place, but still sold it out – their shows are colourful affairs, often involving costume box outfits, hand-painted cardboard cats and coach trips to Margate. Their music is just as unpredictable. Debut album Deep Down Happy hit No 2 in 2020 on the strength of a smorgasbord of quirky, quickfire songs running...

At just fifteen minutes, short movie Where the Witch Lives manages to pack a lot into what seems like just the start of a story. A mother and her two young daughters move into old, worn-down and isolated house next to a river. The twelve-year-old and eldest daughter believes that a witch that lives there is starting to torment them.
It’s a perfect short story, in that it fills the run time perfectly and runs well as a short but leaves you wanting more. And it’s easy to see how this could be made into a full-length feature either by continuing the story that is told here or by stretching out the story told here.
You’re quickly thrown into the short and everything is explained right away. It’s a dark story,...

Creative Artists Agency has upped almost 30 staffers to agent or executive titles across divisions and locations, the talent shop announced on Wednesday.
The promotions come as the Hollywood representation landscape continues to fragment, as the past weeks have seen legacy agents from CAA and their biggest competitors form management firms.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled about the next generation of agents and executives, bringing new voices, perspective, and expertise to our teams and clients, and continuing to drive the company forward,” said CAA board member Sonya Rosenfeld. “These promotions help continue our mission to bring ever more energy and passion to our work for our clients.”

Sports Team are a great six-piece English rock band who formed when they were students at Cambridge. The crisp, jagged tunes on their debut LP, Deep Down Happy, recall Franz Ferdinand or the early Arctic Monkeys; their weird-angled guitars can evoke Pavement or Silkworm; their clever critiques of British life recall Pulp and the Kinks; and singer Alex Rice’s ranting style has shades of Art Brut’s Eddie Argos and Mark E. Smith of the Fall. It’s all conjured with a buoyant sense of good-natured humor, so they...

At 13, Mo'ne Davis boasts two assets any baseball player would covet: a killer arm and fierce confidence. "Throwing 70 miles an hour - that's throwing like a girl," the star of the Philadelphia Taney Dragons told CBS News of her famed fastballs. On Friday, the South Philly native became the first girl to throw a shutout in Little League World Series history, allowing only two hits, striking out eight batters and walking none against Tennessee. "It's the Mo show out there," Philadelphia manager Alex Rice told The New York Times. Here's what you need to know about the breakout player, whose...

Aww, Charlie! Who else melted by seeing Papa Swan swing his little granddaughter up in the air? I love it! I’m not sure if any of you are watching Revolution with Billy Burke, but Charlie Swan is pretty far away from his new character Miles.

Today, I'll begin rolling out my premiere coverage (in partnership with Twilight Facebook) from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1, starting with two actresses from the La Push persuasion, Tinsel Korey ("Emily Young") and Alex Rice ("Sue Clearwater"). These two portray characters who've suffered losses resulting from their significant others mythological make-up, but Korey and Rice seem to find that their on-screen personas represent hope and strength . . . Korey also talked about her strong relationship with Twilight fans, via Twitter and convention appearances, and Rice talked about working with Billy Burke ("Charlie Swan") in this installment of the Saga. ....

This might be one of the cutest pictures we’ve ever seen – Rob holding a baby! Does it get much more adorable than that??
It’s hard to imagine that Robert Pattinson could be any more irresistible then he already is, but this picture proves it’s possible! An image of Rob cradling a tiny baby was posted online today, and this is something that Rob fans everywhere need to see!
Rob is shown with his costar from Breaking Dawn, Alex Rice, and her daughter, who’s name, coincidentally is Bella! We can’t help but be totally jealous of this baby, who is getting to do what every girl dreams of – being held in Rob’s arms! And she doesn’t even realize how lucky she is!

It looks like the cast of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1″ is cozying up, down on the Louisiana set.
In this just-released photo posted on Shockya, Robert Pattinson, aka the sexiest vampire on the silver screen, mugs for the camera while holding Alex Rice’s (real-life) baby girl.
(We know, we know. We too were hoping this was a first look at little Renesmee.) Still, the baby is pretty cute, and Rob does look pretty fatherly.
Rice plays Sue Clearwater—the mother of two werewolves who becomes what some would call “involved” with Bella’s father, Charlie, near the end of “Breaking Dawn.”
To make things just a bit more creepy interesting, Rice’s baby is named… Bella.

Robert Pattinson holding baby on Twilight set. The fourth installment in Summit Entertainment's willdy popular vampire series entitled "Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" is currently shooting in Baton Rouge, Lousiana. The first part of "Breaking Dawn" hits theaters next November while the second part won't see the bigscreen until Summer 2012. Actor Robert Pattinson was recently spotted on the set of the film holding a baby. Is it his? Of course not! The baby actually belongs to his co-star Alex Rice. Rice plays Sue Clearwater in the "Twilight" series. You can read on to check out the photo. I'm actually quite surprised. Robert Pattinson doesn't strike me as somebody who likes children, particularly of that age. Nevertheless, he's got a pretty big smile on his face while holding that baby in his arms. Check out the photo inside and let us know what you think.

During her years on the space saga "Battlestar Galactica," as Cylon Number Six (a line of androids with many copies), Tricia Helfer played, among other things, a seductive "angel," a fierce warrior and a mother-to-be.
Her taste for strong roles continued when she returned to Earth (and to Los Angeles from Vancouver, Canada), to take up her first job as a series regular since "Battlestar."
On TNT's sophomore undercover-police drama "Dark Blue," airing Wednesdays, Helfer plays FBI Agent Alex Rice, who thought she was just working one case in a joint task force with the Lapd -- and also thought she was just having a one-night stand with team leader Carter Shaw (Dylan McDermott) -- but instead the task force is continuing, and she's stayed on to run it.
"She's smart enough to know that she can't just come in and take over," Helfer tells Zap2it. "But her say is the final say.

Tricia Helfer may have played it all, but she sure hasn’t told it all — until now!
Canadian actress and former model, Tricia Helfer, already has an impressive resume — including her role as Number Six on Battlestar Galactica, her role as Carla on the popular USA show Burn Notice, and being host to season one of Canada’s Next Top Model. What’s next for this beautiful blonde? She’ll be playing FBI Special Agent Alex Rice on TNT’s drama series Dark Blue, which premiere’s Tonight, August 4 at 10pm/9pm Ct! The series, which was new to TNT last season, is based in L.A. and centers on an undercover unit solving crime.
Check out these six things you never knew about Tricia Helfer! I know how to weld. Not good, mind you, but I know how. I have 4 artificial discs in my back. I have never skied or snowboarded.

Chicago – TNT’s hit-and-miss cop drama “Dark Blue” returns tomorrow night, August 4th, 2010 with a great pair of episodes featuring the addition of the always-excellent Tricia Helfer of “Battlestar Galactica,” but the improvements aren’t merely in the supporting cast, as the first two hours of season two hint at the opposite of a sophomore slump. “Dark Blue” is still a deeply flawed program but the technical elements of the show have improved, the cast seems much more comfortable, and the writing is more tightly-paced. It may never be a great show, but it’s developing into a pretty damn good one.
Television Rating: 4.0/5.0
The set-up is simple enough for this Jerry Bruckheimer-produced program. Lieutenant Carter Shaw (Dylan McDermott) heads a group of undercover cops into a different case each week. It’s basically just a cable variation on the success that Bruckheimer has found on the networks with...

I have to admit to not being sure how much I like TNT’s Dark Blue. The series about an undercover unit operating in Los Angeles debuted last summer and for ten weeks my wife and I kept watching and wondering if it would get better. Slowly, and slyly, we found ourselves getting interested in some of the characters and kept watching.
The series opened with 3.5 million people watching the pilot episode but by the tenth episode, it shed just over half the viewers. Still, TNT had enough faith in the premise and Jerry Bruckheimer’s production savvy to bring it back for a second season starting August 4. Of note to ComicMix readers is the addition of Tricia Helfer to the cast as Special Agent Alex Rice.
Warner Home Video is showing a tad less faith by making the first season available tomorrow as an exclusive only at the WBShop.

Set to hit theaters around the globe at the stroke of midnight, "Twilight" mania has taken over the movie world.
With the third installment of the hit vampire series opening in a record number of theaters - 4,416 screens - there's definitely the expectation of Huge earnings for the Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner led film.
Stirring up a little relationship talk prior to the release, producer Wyck Godfrey recently spoke with Time magazine of the Kristen/Robert off-screen chatter.
Of the real-life romance, Godfrey tells, "I honestly don’t think of it in terms of business. It doesn’t affect our core business at all. The thing I do think about is, Oh my God, I hope they stay together. Because it could be awkward on set in the next movie if they have a huge falling out. It’s like, Wow, they have to portray this love story through two more movies.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon is far from old news, and, yet, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is just around the corner as well. Eclipse, directed by David Slade, releases on June 30, 2010 – much to the delight of Twilight fans. The film has been a bit of a mystery thus far, as the marketing focus has, appropriately, been upon New Moon. Yet, the waft of Eclipse is ... lla Swan (as originally told by Stephenie Meyer in the third Twilight series novel), and it’ll certainly expound upon the emotional triangle that exists between the leading … um … man (vampire) of the series, Edward Cullen (as portrayed by Robert Pattinson), the protagonist (portrayed by Kristen Stewart), and Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner). The Twilight Saga: Eclipse Summit Entertainment There are a host of new castmembers in the film, too, including Boo Boo Stewart (Seth Clearwater), Julia Jones (Leah Clearwater), Kirsten Prout (Lucy), Xavier Samuel (Riley...

There must have been a "New Moon"-related tweet mandate out today, because the faces of "Twilight" clogged my Twitter feed today. David Slade posted an "Eclipse" update, Peter Facinelli TwitPic'd from his makeup chair and BooBoo Stewart posted a photo op moment with Latoya Jackson. Even Gil Birmingham contributed an off-screen group shot.
Candid pics showed up from non-"Twilight"-ers as well, though. Ken Jeong, Sarah Silverman and Eli Roth are all prominently features in today's tweet mix, in addition to Rainn Wilson on Bill Cosby and Mark Webber's on-set shot from his new movie "The Lie." It's a photo-heavy day full of links in the Twitter-Wood report for October 20, 2009.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse star Gil Birmingham posted a couple of new pictures to his facebook page recently of himself with his La Push castmates. Birmingham had tweeted about filming various sequences throughout the Eclipse filming process - particularly the Quileute legends storytelling scene - and his castmates were probably all in that scene with him. In the first picture was Bronson Pelletier, Birmingham, Tyson Houseman, Kiowa Gordon, Chaske Spencer, and Alex Meraz. Aside from Birmingham, each of the castmembers plays a part in the gang of boys who turn into wolves at will (also known as the wolfpack). Photo: Gil Birmingham In the second photograph, Birmingham is pictured with Alex Rice, Julia Jones, and Tinsel Korey. Rice, the newest addition to the Eclipse cast, will portray Sue Clearwater. If all goes well with greenlighting Breaking Dawn (fingers crossed) in the future, Rice and...

Lowdy mercy, all of these updates from the set of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse may have your head spinning today! First of all, there were spottings, spottings everywhere - the wolfpack edition. Cast members like Alex Meraz and Kiowa Gordon were spotted around town yesterday, but the latest sightings include the most recently announced additions to the Eclipse crew Boo Boo Stewart and Julia Jones. As you know, Stewart is set to play Seth Clearwater, and Jones will play Leah Clearwater. Another Clearwater for the mix? Apparently so. Radar Online pointed to the arrival of Alex Rice as being pertinent to Eclipse cast arrivals, and one source claims that this Rice is slated to portray Sue Clearwater. Other sightings included that of Gil Birmingham, who tweeted: "Long hours, but very rewarding. Great 2 be back with cast and to meet the new cast members...looking forward to the telling of the legend.

Nathaniel Geary's independent film is a sign that not all independent films can be excellent despite the originality. This means that On the Corner always give you the feeling that it could have been better than what we see in the end-result. Hopefully, the film feels quite realistic since it was shot on location in the neighbourhood of Downtown Eastside (a place with serious problems of poverty and drugs) in Vancouver.
Patricia "Angel" Henry (Alex Rice), an Aboriginal who hails from Prince Rupert, lives in Vancouver. In order to survive she turns to prostitution along with her friend Stacey (Katherine Isabelle), a white girl. On one day, Angel encounters Randy (Simon Baker), her brother, and he tells her that he has nowhere to live. Of course, Randy will find a dead-end job, but he'll start selling drugs - by making sure Angel doesn't know it - in the street...

The first of many events commemorating the upcoming 200th anniversary of the Lewis & Clark expedition of 1804-06, this National Geographic-produced Imax film will be traveling leisurely around the country. Since April 20, distributor Destination Cinema's "Lewis & Clark: Great Journey West" has opened in big-format venues in Nebraska, Texas, Missouri, Utah and Michigan, with the rest of the big country beckoning. Next up May 18 is Jersey City, N.J.'s, Dome Theater at the Liberty Science Center.
A reteaming of director Bruce Neibaur and producer Lisa Truitt, who collaborated on National Geographic's Imax hit "Mysteries of Egypt", "Lewis & Clark" is a fine introduction to the subject matter by way of a documentary-like re-creation that condenses the epic 8,000-mile journey into 42 minutes while filming in locations as close as possible to the ones described in historical journals.
One of our prouder moments as an emerging nation, the Thomas Jefferson-inspired exploration by river of America's vast Northwestern interior is of historical significance for not always good reasons. Uncharted by non-natives but hardly unoccupied, the land is teeming with new species and new people. Indeed, a young woman named Sacagawea (Alex Rice) becomes a crucial member of the expedition, while the Native American world they travel through will soon suffer a calamitous decline.
Led by Jefferson's private secretary Meriwether Lewis (Kelly Boulware) and soldier-explorer William Clark (Sonny Surowiec), the ambitious expedition to map the Missouri River, cross the Continental Divide and find passage to the Pacific Ocean (on the Columbia River) left St. Louis on May 14, 1804, and returned Sept. 23, 1806. With little conventional dialogue, but with the performers convincingly re-enacting selected portions of the journey, "Lewis & Clark" is ultimately all about the scenery.
To this end, special effects are needed to show such past wonders as a massive herd of buffalo and Montana's Great Falls. Overall, the film proudly celebrates Lewis & Clark's achievement and makes good use of the Imax format. Along with the narration read by Jeff Bridges, the film's reverential attitude toward the pre-industrial wilderness and its fauna both human and animal is a noble sentiment in the current climate of increased consumption of fossil fuels -- not to mention the management of rivers and problems of pollution.
